*Chapter Forty*
*Ok, so I don't know if anybody caught this but when I first introduced the idea that Claire has a different father than Caroline, I named him Noah South. Every chapter that he's mentioned in after that, I named him Noah Smith. Because I'm a dumbass that completely forgot. I want to clear this up just so I feel better and everyone is on the same page. Claire's father is names Noah South! Hanna's surname is South along with Archie, Asher and Penelope. I just wanted to say that because I caught my mistake and I didn't know if anybody else noticed. I fixed it! So if you have no idea what I'm talking about then just ignore all of this and enjoy the chapter! Love you all!*
"Are you nervous?" Caroline asked sitting on Claire's bed as her younger sister got ready for the day.
"Wouldn't you be?" Claire asked turning to her sister. "How do I look?" She asked flattening her outfit.
"Beautiful" Elijah answers appearing at the door. Claire and Caroline both look over at him. Claire instantly smiles.
"You're going to be fine, it's going to be fun, make sure to tell me all about it when you get back." Caroline said. She gave her sister a quick hug before leaving the room.
"You should relax, Elskan." Elijah said walking closer to her. "Today is going to go just fine." Elijah said rubbing her arms soothingly. "Are you sure you don't want me to join you?"
"I want to do this on my own." Claire told him. Elijah smiles and nods. He kisses her forehead gently. "Are you sure you're alright with taking care of Madelyn?"
"It's my pleasure" He tells her. "I feel like we've been bonding quite a lot this past month."
"And I'm glad" Claire said, her hands running over his suit. "I love you" She whispers. Elijah grins leaning his head down to kiss her. She instantly responds pulling him closer to her.
"I love you more, Elskan" He mutters against her lips. She grins. "If you need me, you know how to get me." She nods hugging him. His arms wrap around her tightly, his lips pressing against the top of her head.
"I need to get going" She mutters against his chest. Elijah's arms tighten around her, not wanting to let her go. When he feels her try to get out, he releases her. "I'll see you tonight, have fun with Madelyn." Elijah smiles watching her leave.
Claire walks to her car, Elijah having bought her one as an attempt to try and cheer her up after Klaus's departure. Claire was ecstatic. Not only had he bought her a car but a very beautiful one at that, a brand new mustang.
She doesn't even make it out of the drive way before her phone rings. She pulls it out, smiling instantly when she sees who's calling her. She pulls out of the drive way and speeds down the street as she answers the call.
"I was wondering when you'd call" She says instantly. A deep chuckle sounds through the phone.
"I apologize for keeping you waiting, love" Klaus says. "Where are you going?" He wonders hearing the hum of the mustang engine driving down the road.
"Remember me telling you about Hanna and my half siblings?" Claire said turning down another road. Klaus hums in confirmation. "Well, today I'm meeting them.. My siblings" She said. Klaus could hear the nervousness in her voice.
"It'll be alright, love." Klaus reassures her. "Is Elijah with you?" He wonders.
"No, I wanted to do this on my own." Claire said. "Though now I wish he did come, I feel like I'm about to burst with anxiety" She tells him with a small laugh.
"You're going to be fine" Klaus tells her. "They'll love you. Witches and werewolves are similar when it comes to packs and covens. I know for a fact that they want to meet you because you're the missing piece to their coven. You'll be the leader eventually, the alpha sorta speak" Claire rolls her eyes hearing the smugness in his voice. Being Alpha meant a lot to Klaus, Claire figured this out very quickly.
"Could you handle it?" Claire asked grinning.
"Handle what, love?" Klaus questions.
"Submitting to another Alpha" Claire tells him. Klaus laughs.
"We'll see who's submitting to who when I return." Klaus tells her. Claire hums.
"When are you coming back?" Claire questions quietly.
"Miss me, sweetheart?" Klaus grin wider than he has in days.
"Just answer the question" Claire laughs.
"Not for a little while longer I'm afraid." Klaus sighs. Claire pouts slightly. "Stefan and I are still searching for that wolf pack, they're very hard to find."
"Well maybe you shouldn't have started a war with them a couple centuries ago." Claire points out.
"Didn't really have a choice then, love. Couldn't have them roaming around killing my vampires" He tells her. Claire shrugs.
"Well then don't complain about not being able to find any then" She tells him. "I have to go, I'm pulling into the diner now." She says.
"Tell me how it goes, sweetheart." Claire grins.
"I will" She says. They stay on the line with each other for a few more moments. Even if they weren't talking to each other, just the knowledge that the other was just a breath away brought them comfort. The distance is torture for the both of them.
Klaus seriously underestimated the bond he felt with Claire. He thought he'd be able to leave Mystic Falls, leave her behind without feeling much of anything. He was wrong. Without her by his side he felt more moodier and more prone to just kill whoever was around him. Stefan couldn't remember how many times Klaus snapped his neck in a fit of rage.
Talking to Claire over the phone helped but it wasn't enough. He needed her with him but knew he couldn't take her from Mystic Falls. It didn't help that Elijah had her all to himself. He had never been more jealous of his brother before.
Every day was a struggle to stay on task. All he wanted to do was abandon his hunt for the packs and return to Claire but he didn't. He wanted to make his hybrids, he wanted his army. Once he had it, he would use them to protect Claire and Madelyn. Not that he doubted his and Elijah's ability to protect her but the more the merrier.
"I'll talk to you tonight" Claire mutters through the silence.
"Until then, sweetheart" Klaus mutters in return. The two of them hesitate to hang up but do so anyways. Claire sighs as she lowers her phone.
It's been about a month since Klaus broke his curse, since he left her. They've talked daily, most of the times more than once. Elijah helped distracted her from the loneliness she felt without Klaus by her side but it never lasted. Eventually she wanted to be with Klaus and no one else. She desired his touch, yearned for it, needed it.
Claire hoped Klaus would find his wolf pack and come back to her. She hated the distance but wouldn't dream of forcing Klaus to abandon his hunt. He's wanted to do this for centuries, she knew it would be selfish to ask him to stop just to come back to her. She didn't feel like she was special enough to have him stop just for her.
Putting her phone in her purse, she climbs out of the car and walks towards the diner. She enters it and looks for Hanna. Soon she sees the dark haired Australian and smiles. Hanna waves her over.
"Hey, I'm glad you made it" Hanna said once Claire arrived. "Let me introduce you to these guys. This is Archie, that's Asher and-"
"And I'm Penelope but you can call me Penny" Penny introduced before hugging Claire tightly. "Thank God there's another girl" She whispers. Claire laughs hugging her sister back. Claire notices the twin brothers rolling their eyes having heard Penny.
Her little sister was the spitting image of Hanna. She had practically pitch black hair but instead of Hanna's green eyes she had a vibrant blue. Claire couldn't remember meeting anybody shorter than her but Penny is, though Claire figured the girl would still be growing.
"Mom says your a Siphoner too" Archie speaks up as Claire sits at the head of the table. To her left sat the twins and to her right sat Penny and Hanna. Claire looks at her little brother.
Both of the twin had a light brunette colored hair. Archie had green eyes just like Hanna but Asher had blue eyes. Asher's eyes were darker than Penny's. Another difference that Claire could see was that while Archie had a sense of child like wonder in his eyes, Asher's eyes held skepticism and caution.
"That's right" Claire nods. "I just found out a little less than a year ago." Claire tells him. Archie grins happy he wasn't the only different one in the family. While his family accepted him he still felt like an outcast.
"Why didn't you bring Madelyn?" Hanna questioned curiously. "What about Elijah?"
"Elijah's at home with Madelyn. I didn't know whether or not I should bring her." Claire told her.
"I wanted to meet her" Penny said slightly disappointed.
"I can text Elijah to bring her" Claire suggests. Penny grins and nods. "Would that be alright?" She asked mainly looking at her brothers.
"Mom says Elijah's your soulmate so I guess he's family now too" Archie said shrugging. Asher rolls his eyes but doesn't say anything. "Can't have a family lunch if the families not all here."
"I'll text him then" Claire said pulling out her phone. She knew she could have tried to enter his mind and speak to him through their connection but she didn't know how they would react to that, so she settled on texting. "He's on his way."
"That was quick" Penny said. "I usually have to pull my friends teeth out to text me back." She jokes.
"Well if it makes you feel better, Elijah is absolutely terrible at texting" Claire said rolling her eyes. "He's very straight forward and to the point. Oh! And heaven forbid he actually texts first."
"Oh my God! I know!" Penny exasperates. "My friends are the same!" Claire smiles happy that she's bonding with her.
"Mom says you have more than one mate" Asher commented. Claire frowns her eyebrows not understanding his tone. Hanna kicks him from under the table.
"That's right" Claire nods. "I have five of them"
"Five?" Penny whispers in shock. Claire nods smiling.
"There's Finn, Elijah, Klaus, Kol and Henrik." Claire lists. Asher scoffs. "Is something wrong?" Claire snipped looking at him.
"Don't mind him, he just has a hard trouble believing in the existence of soulmates" Hanna explains. Claire nods slowly.
"So you don't blink an eye at the existence of vampires, werewolves and witches but soulmates" Claire nods. "That's where you draw the line?" Penny grins. "Really?" She deadpans.
"He's just pissy that he doesn't have one" Penny snarks. Asher glares at her.
"That's not it." Asher snipped. "I just don't believe that people are destined to be together. Your mates were born a thousand years ago and you're only alive now. It just doesn't make sense" Asher shrugs.
"Love rarely makes sense" Claire tells him. "But that doesn't make it any less real." Asher simply rolls his eyes again.
"Don't try and convince him, I've done enough of that" Hanna sighs. Claire shrugs slightly before turning her head to the door feeling Elijah's presence. A moment later he walks through the door holding Madelyn's carrier. A grin instantly appears on her face.
"That's Elijah?" Penny asked.
"You should have seen him before I made him get a haircut" Claire teases. Claire always loved Elijah's hair. She loved the feel of it but the look needed work. Elijah rolls his eyes at her comment but the smile on his face doesn't falter.
"Hello, Elskan" Elijah greets. Claire stands up once he's close enough. She reaches up and kisses his cheek the same time he kisses hers. "Hanna" He greets.
"Hey, Elijah" Hanna stands up and makes Penny move over a seat so that Elijah could sit beside Claire.
"Elijah this is Archie, Asher and Penelope" Penny smiles at Elijah. Claire could instantly tell she had a crush on him but instead of getting jealous she found it adorable. She knew Elijah's hers and that he couldn't leave her for anybody, so there was no need to get jealous. "And this is my daughter, Madelyn."
"She's precious" Penny said.
"Looks just like you" Archie said and Asher couldn't help but to nod as well.
"Thank you for bringing her" Claire muttered.
"Anything for you" Elijah muttered back grabbing her hand, placing a soft kiss on it. Claire grins while Penny releases an 'awe'.
"So you're her mate?" Asher asked raising his eyebrows at Elijah as he sat across from him.
"Indeed I am" Elijah nods, his eyes going from Asher back to Claire.
"Asher here doesn't believe in soulmates" Claire explains.
"Ah" Elijah nods understandingly. "It's not an easy thing to comprehend" Elijah agrees. "It is so rare, that many do question it's existence but I can assure you that it is a very real phenomenon." He tells Asher.
"How rare?" Penny asked.
"Every supernatural creature is destined to have a soulmate" Elijah explains. "However, it is hard to stay alive in the supernatural world so it is rare for one to live long enough to meet their mate. Take me for example, it has taken me about a thousand years to find Claire. There are less than a handful of vampires that are anywhere near my age."
"How do you know if you have a soulmate?" Penny asked her chin resting on her hand, watching Elijah eagerly. She hung onto every word he said. Claire couldn't help but to smile and shake her head at Penny.
"Well, I have heard various things over my years. Sometimes they have dreams about their soulmate like Claire has. But dreams do not occur for every pair." Elijah explains. His hand reaches for Claire and she grabs it. Their hands rest on the table. "I met a pair of soulmates and they told me that neither of them had dreams but they felt this connection even before they met. Like magnets. They would both get this desire to go to a certain location and said location is where the was. Another story I heard is that fate just happened to make them cross paths and the moment you look at them..." Elijah turns his head towards Claire. She smiles at him. "You just know."
"And you expect us to believe that?" Asher asked laughing while Penny seemed to fall more in love with Elijah's words. "You should work for John Greene or L.J. Smith." Asher scoffs.
"Asher, be nice" Hanna scolds. Asher holds his hands up in mock surrender. Claire presses her lips together, slightly upset that Asher didn't believe in the soulmate bond. Elijah lifts Claire's hand to his mouth, kissing it gently. She looks at him and he gives her a small wink. She smiles instantly calming down.
"Oh! Mom, have you told her yet?" Penny asked suddenly. Claire looks at her curiously while Hanna shakes her head smiling. "We're moving to Mystic Falls." Claire's eyes widened slightly.
"Oh really?" She asked tilting her head.
"We thought it would be best" Archie said gaining Claire's attention. "Our grandparents live there so we'll be closer to them and to you."
"Isn't that exciting?" Penny asked grinning. "I can finally have some girl time with someone other than mom."
"Ouch" Hanna teases.
"Of course it's exciting." Claire forces a smile. "I can't wait for you to meet Caroline, we'll have a girls night once you're settled. When are you moving?"
"This weekend" Asher said keeping his eye on Claire. He could sense her discomfort and it brought out his curiosity. He wondered why Claire seemed to not want them to move to Mystic Falls, he found it curious.
"Oh... Really?" Claire muttered. Elijah runs his thumb over her knuckles, calming her down again. She sends him a reassuring smile.
"That is ok?" Asher asks tilting his head. "We have your permission, right?" Asher asked in a less than friendly tone. Elijah gives him a warning look not liking his attitude towards Claire.
"Asher, that's enough" Hanna said.
"I'm just asking a question mom" Asher laughs shaking his head. "I mean, I just want to make sure we have her blessing since the whole world revolves around her now" He snapped standing up abruptly.
"Asher" Hanna scolds. Claire clenches Elijah's hand, shaking her head at him when he obviously wanted to intervene. Asher just leaves the table and walks out the diner. "I'm sorry about him."
"Don't be... I'm gonna go talk to him."
"Elskan" Elijah says but Claire smiles at him.
"I'll be fine" She reassures him. "You'll be able to watch me right through the window" She points to where Asher was standing. "He's not going to hurt me, I just want to talk to him." She tells him. Elijah sighs heavily but nods. Claire smiles kissing his forehead before walking out the diner. "Hey" She says walking up to him.
"What?" Asher snipped.
"I feel like I'm missing something here." Claire admitted. "I literally just met you, it usually takes a little longer for people to figure out the world revolves around me" Claire teases. Asher gives her an unamused look. "Bad joke, I get it" Claire nods. "But what's going on? Up until recently, I was considered a very easy person to get along with. A lot of people liked me."
"What's up with the pasted tense?" Asher asked him. Claire sighs.
"I believed in one thing, my friends believed in another. It divided us. I doubt we'll recover" She said looking away from him. Asher watches her seeing how fresh her pain is. Asher prided himself at being able to read people easily, just like Claire.
"I was close to dad before he died." Asher said gaining Claire's attention. "And when he did die, I took it the hardest. I was angry all the time. I wanted to put my anger somewhere so I blamed you for his death because you were what drew his old coven to him. He died killing them to protect you. So when my mom comes and tells me that she met you and that she's doing these favors for you and that you're going to be leading the coven some day and now we're moving to Mystic Falls because of you... I just.. I got angry again." Asher explains.
"Understandable" Claire nods. "But I promise, I'm a good person or I try to be. I'm not trying to take over your life, I'm really not. All I want is a relationship with my siblings. I want to know my family because family means a lot to me." Asher doesn't say anything. "I'm sorry about dad" Claire told him. "I would have loved to meet him."
"He talked about you all the time" Asher told her. Claire smiles. "And I guess I hated that. You always had his attention, his love and I felt like I always had to one up you, be better."
"Look, I can't change what happened in the past. I can't bring dad back and I can't stop you from being angry with me. But we're siblings whether you like it or not. I want to be close, I've always wanted other siblings, not that Caroline's not absolutely amazing but I'm a big family type of person." Claire shrugs. "I want to be friends."
"I'll consider being nicer if you tell me why you don't want us coming to Mystic Falls." Asher bargains. Claire smirks recognizing his talent on being able to read people.
"It's not safe" Claire told him. Asher frowns his eyebrows. "The vampires there, the witches, the werewolves, they're very dangerous. And I just happen to piss off the majority of them. The only ones that like me anymore are Elijah and my sister. The others, they don't trust me, they don't like me and I have a feeling they're going to be coming after me, my sister and Elijah sooner or later. I just don't want you guys getting mixed up in my mess."
"Why?" Asher pressed. "What happened?" Claire sighs.
"Why don't I explain everything inside?" Claire suggests. "So everyone can hear what happened." Asher hesitates but nods, following Claire back into the diner.
Once they were inside, Claire explained why it was dangerous to go to Mystic Falls. She started from the beginning so they could truly understand everything that's happened. She told them straight out how she got pregnant with Tyler, how he treated her. She told them about how he ended up as a werewolf and abandoned her. She told them about her friends, Bonnie and Elena. How close they used to be and how that all changed with the Salvatore's came and when Elijah came. She explained how they wanted Klaus dead and she couldn't let that happened because of the soulmate bond. She told them how she let Elena die but did everything she could to protect Bonnie. She told them how she used her sister to get information on their plans to kill Klaus so she could prevent it.
Claire didn't leave anything out. She told them everything. They asked more questions and answered those with extreme detail. By the end, they felt as if they had lived through everything with Claire. As if they had experienced it themselves.
Then Claire waited. She waited to see their reactions. She knew it could go either way. They would either believe she did the right thing and be on her side or they would think she was bat shit crazy.
"That's..." Penny broke the silence hesitantly. "Very brave" Claire smiled at her. "And badass" Penny nodded. Claire laughs slightly, feeling more relief than anything.
"This whole soulmate thing... it's serious stuff isn't it?" Archie muttered still shocked by what Claire had explained.
"Extremely" Claire nods.
"Remind me to never get between you and them" Archie muttered. Claire smiles before looking at Asher. He's the one who didn't believe in soulmates and because he didn't believe in them she didn't see how he could see her other than batshit crazy.
"I can show you" Elijah offers. Asher looks at him. "I can give you a piece of what a soulmate bond feels like" He said.
"How do I know it's real?" Asher questions skeptically.
"I'm not the witch here, I just know a few tricks" Elijah assures him. "I cannot give you illusions, just the truth through my memories."
"Fine, amuse me" Asher shrugs.
Elijah lets go of Claire and moves around to Asher. Elijah grabs his shoulder and goes into Asher's mind. He pushes the memories of the first time he saw Claire. He gave Asher the feelings he felt, the fear, the panic, the soulmate bond. He then showed him the happiness he felt finding her afterwards. It was more than enough to convince Asher of soulmates and it was more than enough to justify Claire's actions.
*Was that good? I feel like this chapter could have been better but I hope it was entertaining! But hey! You got to meet the other siblings! They will all be playing very important roles throughout the book! So you don't have to worry about this book being one of those where the siblings are mentioned but never really show up, cause I have plans for these guys and y'all are gonna love and hate me for it.*
