*Chapter Fifteen* {Founder's Day/The Return}

It's safe to say that Claire hates hospitals. After what happened the last time she was in one... losing one of her babies... she never wanted to go back. She knew it was probably unrealistic but she wanted to avoid it. She never thought she would be back in one so soon and this time, it wasn't for her.

Caroline has gone to the Founders celebration while Claire decided to stay home with Madelyn. It was nice to just relax with Madelyn. At some point she had fallen asleep but her mother woke her up with a phone call saying Caroline had gotten into a car accident.

Claire didn't even hesitate. She packed a bag for Madelyn and drove to the hospital. It took her a few moments to actually walk in but she did it. Once she walked in she was bombarded with memories, memories she desperately tried to push away.

"Hey" Liz said walking up to her. Claire gave her a forced smile. "Are you ok?" Liz asked concerned.

"How's Caroline?" Claire asked not answering her others question.

"I don't know, they're trying to help her but no ones telling me anything" Liz explained. Claire closed her eyes feeling more worried than before. "Matt and Tyler are just down the hall, I have to take this call." Liz said walking away. Claire tensed at his name. Madelyn fidgeted as if sensing her mothers discomfort.

"Sh, it's alright" Claire whispered. "Go back to sleep, everything fine" She comforted even though Madelyn didn't truly understand her words. However, the calmness in her voice lured Madelyn back to sleep.

"Hey" Matt said standing up when he saw Claire. Tyler looked up as well, tensing when he looked at her.

"How did it happen?" Claire asked desperately trying to keep her voice strong. Her mind was automatically going to the worst and the thought of losing her twin was... unbearable.

"Tyler was driving and suddenly... I don't even know but the car ended up crashing into a wall." Matt explained. Claire glared at Tyler who quickly averted his gaze.

"What happened?" Claire growled her sorrow mixing in with rage, at this point it was getting hard to tell the difference between the two.

"I-I don't... I don't know" Tyler admitted.

"What do you mean you don't know?" Claire snapped. "You could have killed her! She can still die!" Claire shouted.

"I know" Tyler replied in a calm, guilty tone. He looked back at her. "I don't know what happened. I was driving when I got this... bad pain in my head."

Claire tensed. She would have shouted at Tyler for crashing the car over a headache but Claire knew. She knew it was much more than a headache. She had seen on the news about people collapsing in pain all at the same time. The same time Madelyn gave that heartbreaking scream.

"What?" Tyler asked standing up noticing the look on Claire's face.

"Madelyn felt it too" Claire admitted. Tyler frowned his eyebrows while Matt awkwardly walked away. "Whatever happened to you, it happened to her too." She said. Tyler holds Claire's gaze for a moment before looking down at Madelyn.

He didn't know how he knew but he just did. Call it instinct, some kind of primal knowledge but he knew. The second he laid eyes on the baby, he knew. Then came the guilt, the overwhelming guilt.

"She looks just like you" Tyler admitted softly taking a small step closer. Claire curled Madelyn closer and took a step back. Tyler looked at her with a pained expression.

"You don't get to do that" She whispered. "You don't get to touch her. You don't get to hold her. You lost that right months ago." Although her tone was quiet, it dripped with venom and anger.

"I'm sorry" Tyler whispered in a heartbroken tone, his expression looking like a puppy that had just been kicked.

"That's not enough. I cannot stress how much that's not enough." Claire laughed with tears in her eyes. "I can't even look at you" Claire shook her head and walked away. Tyler clenched his jaw and watched her leave as Liz walked up to him.

"It's Tyler's isn't it?" Matt asked coming up to Claire as she got comfortable in the waiting room. Claire looked up at him, tears still in her eyes. "He's the father." Matt stated feeling sure of himself but wanting Claire's confirmation.

"Yeah" Claire whispered unable to deny it. Matt clenched his jaw and sat down beside her. "Looks like he finally believes me now" She whispered looking at Madelyn's sleeping face.

"Are you gonna forgive him?" Matt asked.

"Not anytime soon so I wouldn't hold your breath. He's not getting anywhere near Madelyn until he can prove to me that he's changed. That he's not the asshole jock he's been and is in high school. That he's not the player that played me. That he can be a father to her, a dependable father. If he can't convince me of that, he can kiss any relationship with her goodbye." Claire told him.

Claire wanted to hate Tyler. She tried but a part of her still loved him despite all he had done. Despite him shattering her heart. Despite him cheating on her. She didn't trust him and she didn't like him.

However, Claire wasn't a cruel person. If he could prove he could be a dependable and good father, she wouldn't deny him a relationship with Madelyn. She couldn't do that to her baby girl. Madelyn deserved a father, she wished it was someone other than Tyler but that's not how the world works.

"It wasn't his fault about the car crash... he seemed like he was actually in a lot of pain." Claire glanced at Matt and smiled slightly.

"The one thing in the whole world I don't blame him for." She said and Matt smiled laughing a bit. "But Matt, you have to understand, Madelyn is the most important thing to me right now. I will protect her from anything and anybody and if that includes Tyler as well, then so be it." Matt nodded not able to understand how she was feeling completely but still, understood to some degree. "I can't lose her, Matt" Claire whimpered.

He looks at her and notices just how close she is to losing it. He instantly wraps his arm around her shoulder and pulls her to him. She lays her head on his shoulder, keeping Madelyn close. She tries not to cry but a few tears still fall. She sniffles and he tightens his grip on her.

"She's going to be fine" Matt muttered to her. "She's Caroline, she's the most stubborn person I know... One of the most" Claire smiled slightly.

"I hate hospitals" Claire muttered. Matt sighed shifting to get more comfortable. "Are you and Tyler good now?" Claire asked lifting her head off his shoulders, wiping her eyes.

"We're getting there" Matt said. Caroline had told Claire about how Tyler had either tried to hook up with Matt's mom or had actually hooked up with her, Claire couldn't remember which.

The two of them settle into a comfortable silence. Matt still had his arm around Claire's shoulders offering her much needed comfort. Claire laid her had back on his bicep, feeling exhausted but trying to stay awake. She had put Madelyn in her carrier so that the two of them could get more comfortable knowing they would be a while.

Eventually the two of them fell asleep on the chairs, Liz having called Sarah to help keep an eye on Madelyn. Sarah sat a few seats away from the two teenagers making sure Madelyn was fine but not taking her away from Claire.

Matt woke up early the next morning, all feeling in his arm gone. He looked at Claire and sighed. Even in her sleep, she looked troubled. He could see how sleep deprived she was and despite the uncomfortable feeling in his arm, he let her sleep.

He then thought about his relationship with Caroline. He really cared about her, he really liked her. Though he couldn't help but to think about what would happen if he dated Claire. He knew their personalities went together more than him and Caroline but no matter what he did, he couldn't grow any romantic feelings for the new mother. Whenever he was around her all he felt was that she was a friend, a sister at most.

Claire felt the same. She knew Matt was such a great guy. She wished she had fallen in love with him instead of Tyler but when she got with Tyler, Matt was with Elena and head over heals for her. She knew it was never meant to happen between the two of them so she just settled for the friendship they had.

They had one night together after she broke up with Tyler and Elena broke up with him. It was a great night but it was nothing amazing. It was just a distraction. It was more two friends trying to help each other forget than two people trying to fall in love.

"Hey" Matt said waking Claire up when he saw Bonnie walking over to them. "Claire" She hummed and slowly opened her eyes.

"Oh, I'm sorry" She said realizing she had fallen asleep on him.

"No problem" Matt said giving her a small smile. Claire returned the small smile, both of them having forced it. They were both scared for Caroline.

"Hey" Bonnie said sitting on the other side of Matt. Claire gave her the same smile before rubbing her face tiredly. "How is Caroline?"

"She's not good, Bon" Matt told her his voice threatening to crack.

"What happened?" Bonnie asked softly. Claire looked down at Madelyn before over at Sarah who had moved closer during the night. Claire couldn't help but to smile at the nanny. Sarah had been a great help the last few days, especially last night and Claire couldn't help but to feel grateful.

"We were driving and Tyler heard this noise and he got-" Matt tried to explained.

"A noise?" Bonnie asked in a tone that made Claire look at her curiously.

"He got this migraine or something and he lost control of the car and .. I thought that Caroline was fine and then.. and then she wasn't so.." Matt said obviously more worried than Claire had thought. Claire reached over and rubbed his back letting him know she was here for him as much as he is here for her. Matt turned to her and smiled.

"I'm going to grab some coffee, want some?" She asked softly. Matt shook his head. She looked at Bonnie giving her a pointed look. Bonnie nodded and stood up. "Mind keeping an eye on Madelyn, I won't be long"

"Oh, Uh... Yeah, sure" Matt said shifting slightly. Claire smiled.

"She's sleeping, relax. If she wakes up and starts crying just get Sarah" She said and Matt nodded relaxing a little bit. "Wanna tell me what the hell happened last night?" Claire asked looking at her.

"The Gilbert Device." Bonnie said. Claire raised her eyebrows. "It sends this signal to all the vampires, a painful one. They set it off last night to collect and get rid of them."

"Why would Tyler hear it? He's not a vampire?" Claire asked confused.

"I don't know" Bonnie shrugged looking guilty.

"What else?" Claire pressed. She shrugged but Claire continued to press her until Bonnie gave in.

"Elena wanted me to despell the device so it wouldn't work... I didn't do it." Bonnie said guiltily. "Damon almost died."

"You know Madelyn heard it too" Claire snapped. Bonnie looked at her quickly. "I don't know why but Vampires weren't the only ones affected by it. So next time something like that comes up, despell the damn thing" Claire snapped. "I don't ever want to hear my baby girl in that much pain again." She growled.

"I'm sorry" Bonnie said quickly. "I didn't know, if I knew it would have hurt Madelyn I would have despelled it" She told her. Claire sighed rubbing her face.

"I know" She said more relaxed. "I'm sorry for snapping, I know you didn't know" Claire released a long sigh. "I just.. I'm worried about Caroline."

"She's going to be fine" Bonnie reassured.

"You don't know that" Claire whispers. "She's in surgery. People who are in good health can die in surgery and nobody is telling us anything about her condition or anything." Claire slowly becomes more frantic, her heart escalating and tears coming back to her eyes.

"It's ok" Bonnie whispered hugging her tightly. "She's going to be ok... She has to be" Bonnie whispered for the both of them.

"I lost Aaron here... I can't loose her too" Claire sobbed completely breaking down. Bonnie's heart shattered as she heard Claire say his name for the first time since she named him.

"Claire, Claire, you have to calm down." Bonnie quickly leads Claire to a seat. "Deep breaths, Claire. Deep breaths." She tries to calm her down. "You are not losing Caroline" Bonnie said sternly making Claire look at her. "She is going to make it out of this and she is going to be fine."

"She's going to be fine" Claire repeats softly. Bonnie smiles and nods.

"She's going to be fine." Bonnie takes dramatic big breaths trying to get Claire to do the same. Slowly, she does and takes big breaths with Bonnie calming down. "How about some coffee now?" Bonnie asked. Claire gives her a grateful smile and nods.

The two of them grabbed some coffee before returning to Matt, Madelyn and Sarah. Claire held two coffees, one for herself and one for Sarah. When they arrived, the nanny was awake and talking to Matt quietly.

"Here" Claire said hanging on to Sarah. The nanny looked up and smiled at Claire. The new mother sat beside the nanny. "Thank you for coming last night."

"It's no problem." Sarah said. "Thank you for the coffee" Claire nodded.

"I'm sorry for how I acted yesterday. I shouldn't have threatened or talked to you like that."

"Don't be sorry. You're a protective mother and that's a good thing. You don't know me, it's completely understandable." Sarah reassured.

"I want to change that" Claire said shifting more towards her. "Who knows how long we're going to be here. I want to get to know you" Sarah smiled and nodded.

"Well, I'm 35 years old. I met your mother in high school. She was a junior and I was a freshmen. She helped me around. I was kind of a loner and couldn't make friends easily. I didn't have the best situation at home and your mother helped me a lot." Claire smiles at her. "We've been best friends ever since. I practically lived with her sometimes, if you ever want to hear embarrassing stories just let me know" Claire smiles and laughs a bit.

"I'll be sure to take you up on that." Claire said and Sarah smiled nodding. "Do you have experience with kids?" Claire asked.

"I practically raised my little brother. My dad spent most of his time in other women's beds and when he wasn't with the women he was in the bars." Claire smiled sympathetically. "Mom did her best but the stress got too much a lot and she tended to take it out on me and Brandon, my brother."

"I'm sorry to hear that" Claire said and Sarah smiled.

"I've come to terms with it. I look at it as a way not to live life. To not turn to drinking to coop" Claire winces and looks down at her lap as she remembers she did that exact thing. "To not get so stressed that you take it out on other people. To look on the bright things in life and to be happy."

"Sounds like you have it figured out" Claire muttered looking at her coffee cup. Sarah sighed remembering Liz telling her about the little period Claire had after losing her boy.

"Trust me, it took me a long time to figure that out." Sarah said. "I was going down the same path as my parents, luckily Brandon snapped me out before it was too late. I'm 10 years sober and living my life to the fullest." Claire smiled at her as she began to respect her more and more.

"By nanny-ing a teenagers daughter" Claire said smiling a bit.

"Life isn't always about the big moments, Claire. It's about the little ones. Like going to a football game with you friends. Seeing your baby grow by the day." Sarah told her. Claire smiled as she thought about Madelyn growing up. "I'm more than happy to help you with Madelyn while you go to school, while you study or just help in general. I cannot stress how much your mother helped me, I'd love to help you in similar ways."

"What happened to your brother?" Claire asked curiously.

"He has a traveling job. He goes around and does nursing" Sarah said proudly. Claire went to continue the conversation when Madelyn started crying. Claire instantly looks towards her and tends to her needs.

"Bonnie" Elena said walking over to the witch. Bonnie walks over to her as well. "How's Caroline?"

"She's weak. They don't know if she's going to make it" Bonnie said. Elena looked at her not knowing how to react. Bonnie pulls her into a hug.

"What?" She whispers. "Is there something you can do?" She asked pulling away from the hug. "Like a spell or something?"

"She doesn't know how, do you?" Damon asked walking up to them still feeling pissed about Bonnie not despelling the device.

"No, I don't." She admitted and Elena ran her hand through her hair.

"No, you don't because it took Emily years to learn a spell like that." Damon snipped.

"Well, I can take down a vampire, that spell as easy to learn." Bonnie shot back. Damon gives her a look before looking at Elena.

"I can give Caroline some blood." Damon offered.

"No, no way" Elena instantly shakes her head.

"No, just enough to heal her" Damon reassures. "She will be safe in the hospital and it will be out of her system in a day, she will be better Elena."

"It's too risky, I can't agree to that." Elena shook her head.

"Do it" Bonnie said making both of them look at her. "This is Caroline. We can't let her die. Do it" Bonnie urged.

"Bon-" Elena went to say but Bonnie shook her head.

"Look at Claire" Bonnie told her. Both Damon and Elena look down the hallway. Claire sits beside Sarah with Madelyn in her arms. There's a smile on her face but it's forced and they could see the distress she's feeling. "She is hanging on by a thread, Elena. If Caroline dies, we're not only losing one best friend." Elena looks at her pained. "She just about had a panic attack. She just lost Aaron, she can't lose Caroline or she's going to lose her mind. We can't let that happen not when we can save Caroline."

"If I do this, you and me, call a truce?" Damon asked looking at the witch. Bonnie smirks.

"No" Damon loses his smug look. "But you'll do it anyway, for Elena" Damon narrows her eyes slightly. Bonnie looks at Elena relaxing when she noticed her finally agreeing to let Damon help Caroline.
