Ineffable | Eight

Iwaizumi Hajime had always been a loner since he was young. He trusted only Kenma and Keiji, his best friends who helped him in his darkest times, who never care about what he or his family did, who helped him get through all his difficulties.

It's not like he hated people. It's just that he couldn't tolerate much of people's stupidity. His harsh childhood taught him that if you want to survive, you can't rely on anyone else. Only the strong one would be able to live, he weak dies. That's just how the world works.

Well, that was before he met Oikawa.

An overconfident, self-centered brat. A rich kid with so many fangirls following him around. And what's worse, Oikawa Tooru dated them just for fun.

Hajime almost beat the life out of the brat. He didn't really care, but he found the act disgusting even for a trash like Oikawa.

And ever since then, Oikawa continued to follow him around, calling him with that annoying nickname 'Iwa-chan'.

At first he was annoyed. But he couldn't get Oikawa to stop it, and finally he gave in. He finally accepted it, and their friendship grew.

And gradually, his life turned easier, brighter, better. He had good grades, he graduated without problem, he enjoyed his time in college, he found an apartment and live with his best friend. Not to mention, he got accepted into a job he loved. As a fireman, he was able to help people and save lives, and he found it... as something he could be proud of. He loves his life, and he wouldn't have it any other way. But he knew happy endings aren't real, he never saw one.

Hajime knew good things would always come to an end.

He knew it as soon as he stepped into their apartment to meet Oikawa awake. It was confirmed as soon as Oikawa asked about the jacket, about the cat.

It was over when he received the call from Kenma.

'Hajime.'

"Did you get away?"

'Yeah. I'll spare the details for later. We were in a hurry last night. Did Oikawa...'

"...He did. Sorry."

'He's asleep?'

"Yes. Do I really have to leave?"

'You only have about five hours, Hajime. Call your workplace. Leave the apartment after Oikawa left for work. Stay in that old building we used three years ago. The Bungalow, remember?'

"Kenma, can't you make any exception?"

'... No. It's concerning our members' safety. You know that I can't risk it. Forgive me, Hajime.'

Hajime gritted his teeth, and stared at the cat in front of him. It was funny how the feline could help them in all their escape. The Golden Cat's mascot.

The gang is his family. But Oikawa? He's more.

However, Hajime doesn't have any choice, and he knew that.

"I understand."

Kuroo clicked his tongue in annoyance, as he glanced at his watch.

Not even 10 in the morning, and he already have so many reason to murder someone.

He knew well not to trust that Neko so easily. But what if his words are true?

Kuroo already left the station, leaving Tanaka, Kageyama and Azumane to do the documentation and gather more info from the security cameras and some people in the neighborhood. While he himself decided to check on the other group.

Kuroo couldn't be more relieved when he spotted his 'bro' in the middle of the crowd.

"Bokuto!"

The owl-like man stopped, and turned around, "Oh, Kuroo! I thought you were-..."

"It's complicated. How's your progress?"

"Sawamura and Yaku stayed behind in the apartment to gather evidence and did a bit more investigation. Oikawa's a wreck."

"I'm fine," the said man snapped, pulling out a small piece of paper and handed it to the leader, "He left this on his desk."

Kuroo took the paper and furrowed his eyebrows. Such a simple message, 'Sorry, Tooru.' and with a neat handwriting, too.

"So he indeed is a member."

"Yeah. We're going to his workplace."

"Tell me more about him."

Oikawa sighed, "Iwa-chan-... I mean, Iwaizumi is a fireman. He doesn't have a schedule of when or where does he work, since his superior called him whenever there's an emergency. I knew him since high school, he's not a that social but he's actually a caring person," Oikawa paused, "It's just hard to believe that someone like him is a part of a gang. And he was cruel enough to leave for it."

"Probably he had been a member for long. Rumors said the gang had been around for more than 10 years, and they began to take drastic measures just recently," Bokuto informed, "Anything about his past?"

"It's a bit private, but..."

"Just tell us already," Kuroo muttered.

"... He had faked some documents to get into high school."

"And now we know, he got connections, too."

Oikawa nodded, as he entered the fire department, followed by Bokuto.

"I'll be waiting outside," Kuroo simply said, as he stood outside the building, leaning on the wall. The two other males agreed, and so Kuroo waited, watching the crowd in the mean time.

His eyes widened when he saw someone in a black hoodie with golden cat ears. Kuroo was about to chase him, but the vibration of his phone stopped him.

A text from Yachi. 'They stole Yamaguchi-san's phone. It's locked, but there's many important data in it. We're trying to block them all.'

Kuroo scowled. He was ready to throw his phone away, when Bokuto ran out of the building.

"He left his job already. They gave us his old address. Should we...?"

"Yeah. Let's get going."
