Better: Max stepped into the house, taking a quick look around. "Nice place," he smiled.

Better: Max reared up, aiming for Bobs' throat. With a ground-shaking yowl, he lunged.

That gives me a chance to decide whether or not I want Bob (in other words my character) to die.
