Indiana Wolves

1980 Indiana, home and root, to about as many superstitions as civilians. It was the night before All Hallows Eve, and an unusually warm night too. You could feel the presence of the ancestral spirits coming through the veil.

The blood moon was full and watching over their gathered decedents gathered around the bonfire. Soon enough ghost stories spread like the wind.

Jessica, Spenser, and Logan had heard all of them before, since there was not much to do, they sunk out taking advantage of the auspicious situation. No one would notice, they were gone, everyone was preparing to send a message to one or another passed relative. It was the tradition of the village, and the only night in the year the vail was down and communication between living and spirits came without a price to pay in blood.

"Jessica, I challenge you to go down the lonely path in the gloomy forest and ask the moon and ancestors for powers to control the winds!" Spencer giggled."' We brought bread as an offering and you – You can be our virgin sacrifice." The boys cackled as all of them wandered off deeper into the gloomy forest. In a few steps, the shadows started dancing in an irrational way, drawing their attention, like an invisible force leading them to the cave.

One more step and the ground gaped beneath them. Logan fell on a pile of skulls and bones, or so it felt. He gave out a helpless cry.

"Logan, Logan where are you at?"

"Down here! I think I stumbled in the hunters' graveyard or some sacrifice to the ancestors! You have to see this cave!"

Not to appear sheepish, Jessica and Spencer followed. In their little redneck country town, all the men loved to hunt. They were known as Moon hunters, but every year at least one set off for a haunt, only to never return again. These men loved to hunt so much that a hunting competition was held once a year. The men were given three hours to shoot and kill as many deer as they possibly could; the man who brought back the most deer was given enough Pabst Blue Ribbon to last him until the next competition. It was a mystery how the forest replenished so many deer every year, or where the bodies of the vanished hunters were. The cave was filled with human and wolf remains, but the light was so scarce, all any of the three could make out, were a collection of herbs and bones everywhere. Someone or something was clearly taking apart the bodies in a very persistent matter, but the reason eluded all three.

"This place is chilling, we better start a fire, grab a torch each and take a look around. "Spenser suggested." We have to find out where we are and how to get back to the Blood Moon gathering.

"Boys... I feel lousy, and it is not supper we had earlier I recon. Do you feel something strange in the... air... '' She was stuttering between her words, and stumbled in her steps...? Meanwhile, there was a sensation of overwhelming power in their veins. Seconds before she lost consciousness. Logan spied, what looked like an abomination cross between wolf and man, leaning down to kiss Jessica, gently tucking away locks of her long sandalwood-colored hair.

"You called upon the spirits of the wolves before you, my Alpha mate, offered yourself to the goddess of the Moon, mother Hecate and you shed off your human skin, on the holiest of nights, claiming your true nature! The figure leaned in closer, locking his lips on her. "When you wake up, you are to discover, all you are reborn to be!". The voice came from the distance, almost as if it was not the creature who spoke, rather than a gust of wind, appearing out of nowhere and disappearing just as fast.

When they woke up, it was clear not hours but days had gone by. They were bitten. Severely.

Neither Jessica nor Logan or Spencer had any recollection of the lost time, apart from the memory of the wolf-like creature and the cave-cemetery. Yet something was different. Logan and Spenser could clearly hear the steps of deer on the other end of the spooky forest and a simple attempt of Jessica to find balance led her to discover, she possessed night-vision and the strength to crumble anything with just a simple gesture.

"Ah, good! You are awake!" A slender, yet masculine figure emerged from the darkness. "I have to do, chosen ones, but first let me introduce myself- I am Mathew, your Alfa and each of you cubs has inherited one of the wolf-gifts: Hearing, Speed, Strength, and Sight. Long ago, your village had an understanding with my kind to, give away five of its own every All Hallows Eve Blood Moon, and in exchange, they live safely and no harm comes their way.''

They all looked baffled but bowed down obediently to him nonetheless.

"Is there a way, for us to pay off our debt to the ancestors and you,and be free of the lycanthropy? "Logan spoke up.

"You either need to save a life or take a life and perform the blood right in front of the entire village and survive. I'd stay clear of silver bullets and the priest's holy water while at it if I were you!" Mathew gave them a devious smirk. If you manage to do so, and survive before the next full moon, and survive, you are free to go!"

Two days later a couple with a had gone out in the woods to collect mushrooms when their son five-year-old Simon got his leg into a bear-trap tossing and turning helplessly. That is when Logan in his wolf-form followed by the other two wolves, approached him in great leaps. The boy closed his eyes, preparing to die, but nothing much happened. above the wolves whined for impatience to try hot blood. Instead, however, they exchanged curious stares amongst each other and surrounded the bear-trap biting, a chunk of the bear-trap, leaving the boy unharmed. The leader was first to get out of the ravine, and sniffing at the boy, signaled it was safe for him to climb on. He made his way through the woods towards the village under the scrutiny of the leader, followed by the other two wolfs and back to his parents, who witnessed the scene in utter disbelieve. Yet what came next, was beyond their wildest imagination: Within a single gust of wind, the three wolves transformed into none other but Jessica, Logan, and Spencer who'd gone missing during the bonfire. They quickly explained every detail of what, they'd endured leaving the witnesses, lost for words but grateful beyond belief.

A group of men followed them to the underground tunnel and cave, alongside the village witch and priest, but nobody could argue the heroism of the young wolf-pack.

From that on, the debt of the village was paid off and the three wolves were looked upon as not cured souls, that need to be stripped from their demons. On the contrary – They became guardians, having solved the mystery of the huntsmen, pleased the sports, and saved a life. The lycanthropy gift passed on to generations. Thus began the story of Indiana Wolves- Children of the Moon.
