PRESENT
STORYBROOKE
WALKING ALONGSIDE HENRY, ANNA James furrowed her eyebrows together slightly upon feeling the cool morning breeze blow against her eyes, causing them to water instantly. It was a random morning in the middle of the week, meaning that Anna had to do her usual job of dropping Henry Mills off at the bus stop. Though Emma and Regina believed that he was old enough to go on his own, Anna wanted to keep a special eye on him.
See, there was a new visitor in town. For any other place in the world, this would have been normal. However, Storybrooke didn't get a lot of visitors. Actually, they didn't get any visitors. Emma was the first Anna had seen in a rather long time. Before then, she could barely remember anyone visiting Storybrooke. The last visitors the town had welcomed were a father and son, but that was years ago.
Anna stuck her hands into the pockets of her forest green jacket as Henry asked her a random question out of the blue. "Hey, Anna, how did you get that scar?" Henry wondered. She looked down at him in confusion. "You know... the one by your left eye."
The girl had almost forgotten that she had a scar there. It was so small that she hardly noticed it. However, whenever she met someone new, they always seemed to point it out. Anna shrugged. "I'm not sure, actually," she admitted. "I guess it's always been there. Why do you—hey, where are you going?"
As she spoke, Henry had run off, for he had spotted the town's newest visitors. The man was crouched beside a black motorbike as Henry Mills approached him. Once Anna had joined his side, she started to scold him but refrained because she didn't want to make a bad first impression on the town's stranger.
"Sorry, he's a curious one," Anna apologized after hearing Henry try to ask the stranger what he was doing in Storybrooke. "Um, I'm Anna."
He nodded at her as Henry asked, "What's that?" He motioned to the box sitting on the top of the motorbike. "What's inside it?"
"Just something I need to do what I came here for," he answered, confusing Anna slightly.
"I thought you were just visiting," Anna wondered.
"Doesn't mean I don't have something to do," he responded while getting on his bike and fastening the helmet to his head. The engine revved as he continued to speak. "You two kids better get to school. Looks like a storm's coming."
Though the man had disappeared after that, more and more questions only began to appear in Anna's head. Just who was he and what were his intentions in Storybrooke?
After dropping Henry off, Anna made her way toward Granny's to talk to Ruby about the stranger. He was all the people could talk about. However, his presence wasn't what Anna was bothered by. She was bothered because he was up to something and Anna wanted to find out just what that was.
As Anna turned to walk down the short path that led into the Diner, she suddenly ran into someone. "Whoa! I'm so sorry!" Anna exclaimed before realizing she had bumped into Mary Margaret, who was frantically jumping around in attempt to get inside. "Hey, is everything okay?"
"I, uh, yeah! I was... planning on getting coffee before I... get to the... the school to help out with the science fair," Mary Margaret lied. Anna stared at her suspiciously. "You know how those kids are with their, um, planets."
With that, Mary Margaret scurried inside. The confused brunette slowly followed behind, just in time to see her fixing her hair by using the back of a spoon. Anna hopped onto one of the stools at the counter and began to chat with Ruby about the stranger.
"Oh, and you know what bothered me the most? He thought I was going to school with Henry!" Anna exclaimed in annoyance.
"Technically, he said you two should get to school. He probably thought you were in high school," Ruby pointed out.
Anna pressed her lips together. "Yeah, well, I'm in college," Anna grumbled as the door swung open. In walked David Nolan, who was in to get his morning coffee for him and his wife, Katherine Nolan.
"Morning, Anna," David greeted. Anna forced a smile at him, greeting the same thing.
Anna didn't like David all that much. She thought he was untrustworthy and annoying. He was all Mary Margaret talked about, so just the thought or sight of him made Anna get a bitter taste in her mouth. Nonetheless, Anna still smiled and remembered her manners.
David turned around, spotting Mary Margaret reading a book at one of the nearby tables. He smiled at her as they greeted each other. "Uh, I should go. I'm gonna be late for work," David realized.
"Oh, the Animal Shelter, right? How's that going?" Mary Margaret asked.
"Well, the apes haven't taken over," David answered in a joking manner.
"Yet!"
"Not on my watch."
The two shared a laugh while Ruby and Anna shared confused expressions. Once he was gone, Mary Margaret sighed and smiled. Her crush on the married man was getting worse.
Emma suddenly walked out from the back of the diner. "This is making a volcano?" the blonde wondered.
Anna raised her eyebrows, turning around in her seat. "I thought you said something about planets?" Anna added. She walked over to the two, taking a seat. "You should learn to clean up your lies, Mary Margaret."
Mary Margaret's mouth opened and then closed. "I was—"
"I get it," Emma interrupted.
"He comes here every morning at 7:15 AM to get coffee," Mary Margaret started.
"For him and his wife," Anna added. "He's married, Mary."
"I know, I know, I know... I just... like to come here and see him," Mary Margaret admitted.
Emma smirked awkwardly at her. "So you're a stalker?"
"No, not really!" Mary Margaret quickly exclaimed. Anna and Emma looked back at each other, exchanging glances before looking back at the teacher. "Maybe a little bit. And it's not like I'm following him. I just know that he spends his mornings with Kathryn, gets his coffee, then drives to the animal shelter to start work at 7:30 and then he's home around 5:00."
"Oh, is that all?" Emma sarcastically wondered.
Mary Margaret pressed her lips and continued. "Thursdays they pick up Chinese for dinner." Emma and Anna smiled sympathetically at her. "I can't get him out of my head."
"I know," Emma told her. "Maybe the first step is not showing up here tomorrow."
"Love's the worst." Mary Margaret frowned.
Anna gave her a look of sympathy before glancing to the side and seeing Frankie walking past the front of Granny's. Quickly excusing herself, Anna jumped up and scurried out the door to meet up with him.
"Frankie!" Anna called out. The boy stopped and turned around. "Hey! You don't have school?"
Frankie shrugged. "Overslept. I'm late, but I don't mind now that you're here," Frankie admitted shyly. Anna smiled at him.
Before Anna could reply, Mary Margaret's voice called out to Anna's. "Anna?" Mary Margaret called out. Anna turned to see Mary Margaret and Emma walking toward her and Frankie.
Anna smiled excitedly at them. "Oh, hey! This is the guy that helped me out on that essay I aced awhile ago," Anna started to introduce. She began to motion toward Frankie, but Emma interrupted her before she could continue.
"Anna, who are you talking to?"
Furrowing her eyebrows together, Anna looked beside her, only to realize that Frankie wasn't there. It was as if he had vanished in thin air. "I... he was just... he was right here," Anna said in confusion.
Mary Margaret walked closer to her and placed her hand on her forehead. "Are you feeling okay?" Mary Margaret wondered.
"Yeah, I-I'm fine... but... I could've sworn..." Anna trailed off, glancing around.
"Maybe you should go home and get some rest, kid," Emma mentioned. "Come on, I'll walk you home."
Anna took a step back. "No... he was right here..."
"Anna, please," Mary Margaret told her. "There's no one here besides us. Please let Emma take you back home. We all saw what happened to Graham. We just want you to rest up. That's it."
Sighing, Anna nodded and allowed Emma to escort her home.
