Chapter Thirty Seven
John Pov
This morning.
That's when it all went down hill.
The baby was due.
Laf and Herc stayed in Angelica's room helping her while Alex and I stayed outside with Washington and the kids. Angelica's sisters stayed inside by her side the whole time.
We could only hope for the best.
But that wasn't enough.
Hoping is never enough is it?
Laf and Herc came out with tear stained faces.
"H-How'd it go?" Martha choked out.
"...Angie didn't make it." Herc said softly. Laf stifled a sob.
I looked over at Alex and his eyes were dull.
No emotion whatsoever.
"What..what about the baby?" Washington asked, his voice shaky.
Laf let out a sob and let himself slide down the side of the house, pulling his knees into his chest. Herc sat down patting his back.
"Oh my god." Washington muttered, stumbling backwards and grabbing our fence.
Alex said nothing. He got up put on his coat and left.
"Alex?!" I called.
"I'll be back." He said his voice cracking slightly.
"Wheres daddy going?" Pip asked, clinging to my arm.
"I-I don't know." I said, tears forming in my eyes.
Everyone was silent with the only noise to be occasional sobs.
"I'm going to go find Alex." Herc muttered, getting up. Laf grabbed his shirt sleeve and pulled him back down, sobbing in his shoulder.
I don't blame him.
He saw everything firsthand.
Laf probably thinks it's his fault they died.
"Wait. Did you...shoot her after she died?" I asked, jumping to my feet.
"Oh shit-" Herc said standing up.
I heard a scream from inside.
Peggy.
I ran in and saw Angie-
no.
Not Angie.
It's not her.
I grabbed the nearest knife and with tears rolling down my face, pushed it away from Peggy and stabbed it.
It fell to the floor.
Peggy continued on sobbing with Eliza crying by her side.
They are going through the unimaginable.
I walked outside and saw Alex walking back, a cigarette in his mouth and his hand shoved in his pocket. His head hung low, most likely covering his tear stained face.
I ran towards him and hugged him. "Alex please don't smoke." I whispered, taking his cigarette.
"But it helps." He muttered.
"No baby, it's going to hurt you." A tear streamed down his face.
"Why'd she have to die?" He asked, looking up to the sky.
"I don't know. I don't know Al."
He let out a heavy sigh and muttered, "I'll be back." I grabbed his arm.
"Don't leave. Please." I begged.
"You can come with me but It won't be pretty. Where's Pip?" He asked.
"With Washington. What do you mean it won't be pretty?" I asked him.
He averted his eyes.
"Alex?" I questioned, moving his chin so he'd look at me.
He shook his head and walked off into the woods. I chased after him.
"Alex?" I asked again.
I pushed through some bushes and saw Alex standing at the base of a tree. The tree has pictures all over it.
Most of them had X's crossed over on them.
"Alex what the fuck is this?" I asked.
"My tree." He replied.
"What does that mean? Who are those people?" I asked, gesturing to all the pictures.
"Everyone that I was friends with." He said. "You're on there. You're on that branch with...my family." He said quietly.
"Oh." Is all I could muster out.
"You should probably leave about now." He said.
"What?"
"I can feel it. I'm going to lash out on you and you'll be upset. Just go and let me get out all my fucked up emotions please. It won't be pretty." He said.
I didn't want to protest so I left and heard him mumble a thank you. The second I left, I heard him shouting in a language that I detected to be Spanish.
He and Angie were close in their own messed up way.
I can't wrap my head around the fact that she's gone.
