Ch. 10
In the darkness above the slums of Sector 7, a helicopter flies over, heading for the support pillar. Inside the aircraft were two men in black suits. One has a slim physique, turquoise eyes, and unkempt red hair terminating in a long ponytail. He has two symmetrical red scar-shaped marks on his cheekbones. He wears goggles pushed up onto his forehead, having his suit unbutton at the front and his dress shirt untucked. His partner is a tall man with an athletic build. He has tan skin, a shaved head, and sports a black goatee, wearing a black suit paired with a patterned black tie, and studded dress boots. He has multiple piercings on his ears; his left ear has three silver rings, and his right ear has a silver gauge and a blue stud.
Their names are Reno and Rude; both are members of the Turks.
"Understood." Rude spoke in a stoic voice as he hangs up his phone and turns to his trusted partner. "The Avalanche mission's been approved. We are to proceed as planned."
Reno sighed as his brows frown, "This is bullshit. What the hell are they thinking?"
Rude reminded Reno the Turk's motto, " "Threats to public order are to be summarily put down." This is what we've always done."
"Summarily put down," Reno mutters as he looks at the slums of Sector 7.
Both men knew the consequences of what will happen soon. They've done many dirty deeds in the past, from torturing, killing, even kidnapping. Being Turks meant doing the company's dirty work in the shadows.
Reno lets out another sigh and says casually, "Guess it's a little late to grow a conscience...Meh."
They continue heading to the supporting pillar of Sector 7.
Meanwhile, Cloud and the others saw the aircraft that the Turks were on. Tifa had on a look of worried when she saw where the helicopter was heading.
Cloud looks at her and tries to reassure her, "Just on patrol."
Tifa didn't seem all that convinced, and Sara tried to cheer her up, "Don't think much about it. Concentrate on what is important now."
Aerith smiled, "Don't worry. We'll make it in time."
Sara looked around and asked out of curiosity, "Guys, where the heck are we?"
Tifa looked around and was surprised, "We're in the train graveyard."
The Train Graveyard is an abandoned junkyard full of rail tracks with abandoned trains, rubble and barrels, and abandoned storage containers. It lies east of the Sector 7 Slums.
Sara clicked her tongue and commenting on the scene, "Talk about a real treasure trove of scrap. You can easily get lost in this place."
Tifa climbed up on a ladder attached to a broken train and noticed a large building ahead. Everyone also joined with her.
Tifa, "Sector 7 should be just past that large maintenance facility over there. I vote we stay in the light so we can see where we're going."
Aerith looked a bit nervous as she looks at the area, "It's deserted...and kinda creepy."
Tifa nodded, "People don't come around here often. Not just because of the monsters, but...because of the stories."
Aerith asked, "What kind?"
Tifa answered, "Everyone seems to think that the train graveyard...is haunted. As they say, "Those who lose their way out there in the dark of night will never, ever find their way back home again."
Aerith gasped as she looked around, who seemed a bit frightening, including Tifa. At the same time, Cloud and Sara seemed a bit skeptical about the train graveyard being haunted.
Cloud, "Is that right?"
Tifa smiled warily, "I mean, it's not like I think it's true or anything, but you know...it's just..."
Cloud, "Then let's hurry."
After looking around and finding the place where they need to go, Cloud took the lead and set out to make it through the train graveyard. The place was without a doubt spooky and giving this feeling as if something is watching them. The hazy fog and dim lights made the site look worse. Cloud and the others used the trains as a way to navigate through the yard. They approached a small building, and when they did, the door of the building slammed open and shut once.
Tifa gasped, "Guys! What was that?"
Cloud slowly approached the door, and when it burst open, a couple of creatures began to attack them.
Tifa exclaimed, "Don't scare me like that!"
It didn't take them long to defeat the monsters. Yet, Tifa heard something unusual.
"I think I just heard a little kid," Tifa wondered, "Did you guys hear it too?"
Cloud looked at her skeptical, "Why would there be kids out here this late?"
Tifa's eyes widened and gasped, "What, then~!"
Sara shook her head, "There's nothing to be afraid of; after all, we can handle anything."
Tifa was still a bit frightened after having the monsters scared her. But they all kept going. They climbed on another train and walked on the roof of it. They got closer to the maintenance building, and as they did, they all heard the sound of children laughing.
Tifa looked around and stuttered, "W-What was t-that?!"
Suddenly the roof beneath them collapsed and fell right inside the old train.
Cloud stood up and looked at the girls, "You okay?"
Aerith replied as she brushed the dirt off her skirt, "All good, I think."
Tifa groaned, "Still in one piece here too."
Sara smiled, "Same here."
The group walked out of the train and found themselves at the entrance of the maintenance building. Yet, Tifa halted her tracks as she looked at something rather disturbing.
"Guys?"
Tifa was looking at graffiti that seemed to be drawn by kids on the building walls. Drawings of ghosts and stars along with the words saying 'Come on!' Not only did it gave Tifa the creeps it also made everyone a bit on edge.
Cloud sighed and didn't seem that convinced, "Seriously?"
Aerith read the words on the wall, "Come on, huh? Well, that's inviting."
Cloud walked over to the entrance door to the building, and when he did, more doodles appeared on the door. The doodles had ghosts, stars, and the drawing seemed to be some one-eyed monster at the center of the picture. It appears that someone or something wants the group to come inside.
Tifa looked at the others worriedly, "Well, what do you think?"
Aerith replied, "I'm game!"
Sara smiled, "Seems like we're going to play with some ghosts."
Tifa shook her head, "No, no, no, I don't want to play with ghosts."
Aerith assured her, "It'll be fine! We've got a bodyguard, don't forget. Mine!" She grabs Cloud's left arm. The latter looked at her, a bit stunned.
Tifa glared at Aerith. Cloud looked away and said, "Ghosts aren't my thing."
Tifa grabbed Cloud's other arm and insisted, "You're just being modest! After you!"
Sara looked at the trio and shook her head. Aerith looked at Sara and asked, "What's wrong? Not gonna join?"
Sara humphed and turned around, "I don't need a bodyguard. I can take care of myself."
After saying that, Sara marched right in, leaving the others who followed after her. Inside the building, there were more abandon train carts and storage containers. Strange balls of light were floating around. The place seemed more creepy inside than outside. Sara couldn't help but put up her guard more than before.
"Over there!" Aerith suddenly exclaimed and ran off.
Sara and the others followed Aerith, who stopped in front of a storage container. She looked behind the container and smiled.
"Found you!"
Sara was curious to know what Aerith had found. But whatever it was, it didn't seem to want to come out.
Aerith bent down slightly and talked with a gentle voice, "Hey, can we talk? Just for a bit?"
What came out from behind the container was something that no one was expecting. An apparition of a little boy, his whole body was visible, yet one could see right through him. The little boy floated and transformed into a creature with a long shaggy robe with stitches on its arms and the sides. Its face seemed like a child painted on it with an expression of a sad face and a teardrop. Without a doubt, the creature looked like a ghost that came straight out of those cartoon Halloween shows.
Cloud, Tifa, and Sara looked at the little ghost suspiciously. Strangely, Aerith didn't seem afraid or suspicious. She looked at it as if she was welcoming it like a friend. The little ghost appears a bit warily of the intruders, yet he didn't show signs of hostility. Suddenly something knocked it over, and it was another ghost that seemed different. This one had its eyes and mouth open and seemed like it wanted to attack.
Sara and the others immediately attacked the ghost, which seemed difficult since spirits were immune to physical attacks. They had to use magic to defeat it. Once they were done, Aerith started looking for the little ghost. She found it floating nearby.
Aerith smiled, "It's you..."
She looked at the little ghost with interest. However, Cloud begins to draw his sword in an attempt to attack it.
Aerith gasped and stopped him, "Don't!"
Cloud looks at her a bit surprised and reminds her, "That thing is dangerous."
Aerith looked down and muttered, "I know but...even so."
She knew that the ghost could harm them. But she had this feeling that the little spirit didn't want to hurt them, more like looking for help.
Suddenly the ghost vanished, and at the same time, one of the train carts above the group fell right on top of them. Cloud immediately grabbed Aerith and Tifa, running to safety. Sara also ran to safety but ended up on the opposite side from where Cloud and the others were.
"Cloud! Tifa! Aerith!" Sara yelled as she dashed towards the wreckage.
Cloud looked over and noticed that Sara was nowhere to be seen. But he guessed that she was on the other side of the fallen cart.
Cloud asks, "Sara, are you okay?"
Sara replied, "I'm fine! But, what do we do now?"
Cloud knew that Sara could jump over since he's seen her in action. However, that will lead to some questions from Tifa and Aerith since they don't know Sara's true power.
Cloud immediately thought of a plan and said, "See if you can find a way for us to get through. We'll also look for one."
Sara nodded, "Okay, be careful."
Cloud, "You too."
Sara nods and starts to look around that can help the others to get to the other side. Suddenly the little ghost appears before her. Sara looks at it suspiciously, yet somehow she had a feeling that the spirit was not going to attack her. She didn't know why she was feeling this way; it just seemed that way.
Sara looked at it curiously and spoke to it, "Are you here to help me?"
The little ghost floated away and went to a metal staircase nearby. It seemed that it was telling her to follow it.
She chuckled at herself and said, "All right, never thought I would be following a ghost. If you try anything funny, make no mistake that I will cut you down."
The little ghost hid behind a pile of wood planks and peeked out as if it got the message. Sara sighed and walked over to where the little spirit showed her to go. She walked up the metal stairs hearing the metal clank beneath her boots as the little ghost floated near her. Sara could see the other side where Cloud and the others should be. But, due to the lack of lighting, she couldn't see them.
Sara stopped and saw a black mass that floated in the building center and went straight for the large office area. Sara heard a series of laughter, and the little ghost went behind Sara as if it was scared of something.
Sara looked at it and assured it, "Don't be scared."
Sara continued to climb up the stairs and reached a door. She opened it and inside was a control room. It had multiple control panels and computers along with books and file cabinets.
Sara pondered, "I wonder if I could somehow get the power going. That way, if Cloud and the others find other control panels, they can use them to get across. At least, I think that might happen—only one way to find out."
As if it knew what Sara was looking for, the little ghost floated to one control panel in particular. She walks over to it and notices that the screen showed some letters and numbers, which means that it was still working.
Just when she was about to touch the computer, the little ghost immediately floated away as if it was scared by something. Then a book flung towards Sara, almost hitting her. She drew her katana and looked around. Come out from walls, and the floors were more ghosts they began to form a great big mass into what appeared to be a giant ghost.
Sara smirked devilishly and said, "Today is your unlucky day because my friends are not here, and that means I can fight with full force!"
The giant spirit let out an eerie screech, and Sara disappeared in a blink of an eye. The evil spirit looked around to find its prey but didn't realize that Sara was right behind it, and she cast a powerful lightning spell. The spell was so powerful it shook the entire room!
The spirit was struck by it hard and tried to hit Sara with dark magic. But, Sara threw a powerful barrier that deflected the attack. In seconds she was already attacking the ghost with her sword in four slashes that delivered the final blow to the spirit. The ghost disappeared after the last move.
Sara let out a tiring sigh as if what had happened seemed to make her weary.
However, she heard a small child's voice in the room.
"That was fun..."
Sara chuckled and replied, "Yeah, it was. How long has it been since I had to fight like that, I wonder?"
The little ghost came rushing back as if it was worried if Sara was hurt or anything. She looked at the spirit and smiled.
"I'm fine; thank you for worrying about me."
Suddenly the lights to the room came back on. Sara sighed in relief to have some light. She went to the control panel and began to type. She found out through the computer that the crane to operate had no power, and so with a few codes, she learned from her old job. The power to the crane was back on.
Sara smiled, "All right! That should get help the others to get here."
On the other side, Cloud noticed the control panel for the crane suddenly came on. He looked over to the other side where the lighting from the control room was on and couldn't help but chuckle.
He muttered, "Good job, Sara."
Cloud pushed a few buttons and pulled down a lever, and then the crane moved and picked up the cart that fell from before.
Sara noticed what had happened and turned to her little friend, "We did it!"
Even though the ghost had a sad expression, yet Sara could tell that it seemed happy too. From the way, it was moving. Sara rushed down the stairs, and she found her friends also running through the open area.
Tifa exclaimed, "Sara! I'm glad you're safe!"
Sara nodded and said, "Same here."
Tifa asked, "How did you?"
Sara knew what she wanted to know and answered, "I had a bit of help from a new friend."
After those words, the little ghost spirit appeared next to her. Tifa and Cloud were stunned by this; they didn't think that little ghost would help out. Aerith looked at it with a smile.
Aerith, "Thanks for your help."
The little ghost disappears as the group leaves the building. Ahead was more abandoned trains and storage crates. They started to climb on one of the trains but realized that the train was blocking their path.
"This path is blocked? But we're so closed, I can see it." Tifa complains.
Aerith looks at the train that's blocking their path and had an idea, "Hey, do you think these trains might still run?"
It was a long shot since these trains haven't been running for a long time. Yet, it was worthy of giving it a go.
Cloud agreed with Aerith, "Could give it a try."
He climbs up to the train cabinet and notices that it still has some firepower, "Good call, looks like it still works."
The ladies join with him even though it was a bit cramped. Cloud activates the switch inside a train cabin, and the train slowly moves, which clears the path.
The train stopped that made the group stumble a bit, but they each caught their balance.
Tifa asks, "Everybody good?"
Cloud nods, "Yeah."
Suddenly Aerith heard some static noise coming from the train's communications system. She pondered, "I think that's..."
Aerith pauses as the com picks up a voice as it speaks, "Plate separation code is...Got it?"
Sara gasps as she recognizes that voice, "Tseng?"
Another familiar voice to Sara replied, "Yeah, yeah, of course, I do! We can drop the damn thing whenever...It's just that..."
Sara's eyes widen in horror, "Reno?!"
At the same time, over at the support pillar. Rude, who was flying the chopper, was busy firing at members of Avalanche who were defending the pillar.
Reno turns to his partner and rants, "You got a death wish or something? Because I sure as shit don't!"
Reno hears his boss Tseng through his earpiece, "Reno, what's happening? Do we have a problem?"
Reno replies with a groan, "Not really. Small arms fire from some local boys trying to defend the pillar."
Tseng humphed, "More would-be heroes, huh? Sending reinforcements. The more players that take the stage, the better."
Hearing that from his boss, Reno lazily wonders, "So that's what we are, huh?"
Tseng, "Contact me when the mission is complete."
After that, the radio cuts off and back at the train graveyard. Sara rushes out of the train cabinet and looks at where the support pillar stands.
She clenches her fist and shouts, "I hate it when I'm right! Damn it! That son-of-a-bitch President Shinra! Have you gone far enough? Damn you!"
After that last word, Sara kicks a nearby metal barrel. She had a feeling that this would happen, yet she didn't want to believe it. She turned around and saw Cloud and the others staring at the pillar with worried expressions.
Tifa walks over to her and stammers her words, "They're really gonna drop the plate."
Those words felt like more than a ton of bricks falling on her. It felt as if the entire plate of Sector 7 weighed in on her. Tifa couldn't believe that Shinra would do something so horrifying to get back at Avalanche.
Cloud turned to her and reassured her, "They won't if Barret and the others have anything to say about it."
Aerith nodded in agreement and added, "All we can do now is keep moving."
Sara also jumped in, "We can also spread the word to the residents of the slums to evacuate immediately. The more people know the word, the more lives we can save."
Those last words felt encouraging to Tifa. She lowered her head a softly prayed, "Please...Please let us be in time."
With that, they continued moving on as quickly as they could. Cloud had to move a few more trains to clear a path, and after he moved the second train. He heard the sounds of helicopters flying over, heading for the pillar.
Cloud groaned, "Why am I not surprised?"
Sara humphed, "What do you expect? The Turks inviting us to a dinner party? Not a chance."
Tifa asked curiously, "Sara, back there, you mentioned two names. Were those names belong to the two men talking through the radio? And did you know them?"
Sara sighed and answered, "Yeah, their names are Tseng and Reno. Both are Turks and Tseng...I'm guessing by the way he talked back there; he is likely the leader of the Turks."
Tifa raised a brow, "Likely?"
Sara explained, "He wasn't a leader of the Turks at the time I was working for Shinra. The other guy is Reno, a Turk with a lousy attitude which his stiff partner, Rude, always accompanies him."
Remembering that familiar cocky voice, Cloud adds in, "The guy Reno I fought him when I first met Aerith. He's pretty tough, and I'll give him that."
Sara asked, "I'm assuming that not only you fought Reno. You also fought his partner Rude, a bald guy with shades and is skilled at martial arts?"
Cloud replied, "Yeah, I fought with him too."
Sara sighed, "If those two are there, then that's gonna make things harder, for they always get the job done no matter what the cost."
Tifa stammered, "Even dropping the pillar?!"
Sara nodded, "Yeah, even that, so be prepared to cross swords with them."
The four of them made their way through the train yard as quickly they could after going through a few train carts and moving them. They were getting close to their destination.
Tifa picked up her pace and turned to the group, "Almost there! Come on!"
Suddenly more and more ghosts showed up and circled them. Then a black cloud formed above them and then surrounded them. Cloud and the others looked around, wondering what's happening. Suddenly, Sara felt her feet being swept away, and she realized the black cloud was carrying her.
Sara reaches her hand out to Cloud and exclaims, "Cloud!"
Cloud reaches for her, "Sara!"
But the moment he tries to grab her hand, the black wind carries her, and it was gone along with Sara.
Cloud stared at where Sara stood and wondered, "What the hell? Where did that thing take her?"
Tifa recalled something and said, "I remembered something that Marlene said to me one time. She said, "The kids that the black wind carries away have to live in the train graveyard forever and ever." If that was the black wind, then we gotta find Sara fast."
Aerith nodded, "Agreed, we can't leave our friend behind."
Cloud, "Let's look for her and whatever is that thing that took her."
Not far from where Cloud and the others are, Sara opened her eyes as she notices that she was alone. Then the little ghost appeared before her, approaching her while at the same time it seemed nervous.
Sara tilted her head confused, and asked, "Do you know what was that thing that carried me here?"
The little ghost nodded and moved close to Sara as if it was trying to tell her something. She smiled and tried to reach out to the little spirit. But, it and the other ghosts vanished.
Suddenly dark black fog forms around Sara. She stands up and readies her katana as she spots a red light within the thick black mass. Sara could sense that this was no ordinary fog and that it was coming from that red light.
She glares at the light, "You...are you the one who?"
Before Sara could say anything, the black fog became thicker and thicker to the point that Sara couldn't see anything in front of her. Sara looked around, wondering if she could find a way through. Something stopped her train of thought when she heard a voice of a child yelling at her.
"Freak!"
Sara looked back and saw a little boy who was translucent. But, Sara could see its angry expression. Sara was about to protest when she heard another child's voice.
"Monster!"
More and more children begin to shout some hurtful things. Sara sees another version of herself. When she was only ten, she wore a simple teal-blue shirt with black pants and black shoes.
"Go back to your lair, Monster!"
"Our village has no place for you!"
"Something stinks! Ew! It's the Monster!"
"Runaway before she catches you!"
Little Sara sniffs, "Stop it..."
"Monster!"
"Freak-eye-monster!"
Little Sara shakes her head, "No..I'm not a monster.."
"Monster! Monster! Monster!" The voices of children chanting echoed around.
The child version of Sara falls on her knees, covering her eyes with her hand, and cries out, "I'm not a monster!"
Watching the most painful memories of her childhood, Sara falls to her knees and looks at her hands. She mumbles, "Am I a monster?"
Suddenly a bright light shines in front of Sara, and a hand reaches out to her. Sara grabs the hand, and everything around her changes. The black fog clears up, and the train graveyard is seen again. The hand Sara held belong to Aerith, who looked at her with a gentle smile.
Aerith spoke with a gentle voice, "Hey, we found you!"
Sara was stunned as she noticed Cloud and Tifa were also with them. Sara couldn't help but feel happy and that what she experienced was a nightmare.
Sara smiled at Aerith, "I'm glad."
A loud screeching sound was heard; Sara looked around and saw a monster. The monster was a half-man clouded with shagging robes while its legs were the wheels of a chariot, and pulling it was a half of a horse. The horse had a face helm with a half-shaped blade above its head. It seemed that it was two monsters attached.
Sara drew her sword and glared at the monster, and said, "I'll show you who's the real monster around!"
Sara figured out that the monster was the one who made that black fog and caused her to relive those painful memories. She gritted her teeth and slashed at the creature. After her, Cloud raises his massive sword and begins striking at the monster, then Tifa throwing a few punches and kicks. At the same time, Aerith casts powerful spells while supporting the rest of the group.
The monster didn't have a chance and when it was on its last knees. Tifa looks at the support pillar and can see the explosions and gunshots.
She mutters to herself, "Hold on, guys. We're coming."
She then turns to the monster and shouts, "And you can go to hell!"
Tifa lands a powerful kick enough to send the monster flying and crashes into a pile of train carts. After that, the monster disappears.
Satisfied with her attack, Tifa turns to the others, "Let's go!"
Just before the group leaves the area, the little ghost appears once again.
Tifa exclaims, "It's that ghost."
The little ghost floats to Sara and touches her arm. Sara could feel the coldness on her arm; she looks at the little spirit and smiles. She had a feeling what the ghost was trying to say.
Sara, "You're free now go, be at peace."
The little ghost, along with its fellow spirits, all began to disappear into shards of light. This made the group amazed at the scene, seeing the hearts of the lost souls trapped in this place.
Aerith quietly said, "So long."
The group finally left the train graveyard, and as the closer they walk towards Sector 7, the sounds of explosions got louder and louder.
Tifa saw the lock gate that led to the train station and rushed over, exclaiming, "We made it!"
She grips the gate bars with Aerith hanging on to her as they watch the Sector 7 pillar under attack from Shinra forces, with a helicopter again approaching.
Back at the pillar, more and more members of Avalanche begin to defend while Shinra foot soldiers attack them.
A Shinra Helicopter makes an announcement, "Attention, Avalanche! You are surrounded! Stand down and surrender to Public Security immediately! Shinra does not negotiate with terrorists! Resist, and we will use lethal force! I repeat: Shinra does not negotiate with terrorists! Resist, and we will use lethal force!"
Barret bellowed and began to shoot at the chopper, "GOT YOUR LETHAL FORCE RIGHT HERE, ASSHOLE!!!"
Behind Barret, Biggs, Jessie, and Wedge began climbing up the stairs as they make their way to the top while attacking Shinra's troops. However, things were not looking good as more and more members were being killed.
Down bellow near the train station, Tifa and the others look at the pillar with fear in their eyes.
"Dropping a whole plate...just like that." Tifa's voice trembled.
She couldn't believe that Shinra would do something like this. She clenched her fists and shook her head.
"No, no way!" She dashes off, heading straight for the pillar.
Aerith called out, "Tifa!"
Sara, "Wait up!"
The group followed Tifa, who was ready to get to the pillar as soon as possible. However, something that stopped the group from going any further was the grey phantoms.
Seeing them, Aerith pleaded, "Please! Let us through!"
But it seems that the phantoms did not want them to pass through. Cloud dash to one of them and swings his sword. He hit the spirit only strange thing was it didn't show signs of taking damage.
Cloud's eyes widen in surprise and questions, "What are you?!"
He backs away and looks around, seeing so many of these weird things circling them. It seemed that they were determined not to let the group get to the pillar.
Aerith spoke with encouragement, "Cloud, Tifa, Sara! We have to get past whatever it takes!"
Tifa nodded, "Right!"
And so, the group fights the endless swarm of phantoms. However, no matter what they do it seemed that they were not making much progress.
Tifa exclaimed, "There's too many of them!"
Suddenly the swarm of phantoms swarm disperses, with some heading towards the pillar. Aerith looks at the pillar with worried eyes and clasps her hands as if she was praying.
Seeing this unusual behavior, Cloud looks at her, "Aerith?"
The worried look vanishes from Aerith, and a determined look is shown. Aerith tells them, "Come on!"
The group makes their way to the pillar to stop Shinra even though the chances of that are zero.
