Abir watches as Zade was trying to sniff something.
Did he catch something?
"You look weird," He says when he approaches Zade with a bunch of manuscripts.
"She smells different," Zade says trying to go in her direction but Abir stops him.
"It is because she is a human. All humans have a similar smell, unlike us," He tries to counter him.
"I know how a human smells like. I have spent some time with them and it felt like an eternity. But this smell.... this felt like a mix...." Zade doesn't know how to put it. He spent six years out of Alaska and surrounded by humans. He knows a human when he smells one.
"Maybe it's just her perfume. They have all weird mixtures and it always messes up our senses," He could see Zade not buying his explanation so he just tries to divert his attention.
"Shall we talk about work now?" he acts a bit impatient so Zade has to follow his orders. He nods and Abir walks ahead of him, signaling him to follow.
"We are all the part of the editing team but it is divided between two – the creative editing and the factual editing. The office on your left is the creative one where you will be working with me. And on your right is the factual one, headed by Ivory," He points at a beautiful looking Omega and then turns his head towards Zade to warn him, "She is my Omega so don't try on her," he growls the last part but then chuckles to release Zade's stiffness.
"Don't need to worry," He holds up his right hand to show him the ring, "I am already engaged," Zade says in a not so cheerful manner.
Abir, on the other hand, was very excited to see the ring. He clutches his hands and exclaims, "Wow! That's your family stone, right?" he looks at the carved piece. It shone pretty in the sunlight, "Mated also?" he asks with curious eyes.
"No, not yet," He takes his hand back.
"Don't forget to call us for your wedding!" He says cheerfully. Something about Abir that Zade likes is his over-optimistic smile. And one thing he already hates about him, his over-optimistic smile.
"What about you and Ivory?" Zade was here to make friends and he will definitely appreciate someone's attempts at it.
Abir sits down in his office and signals him to sit on his chair too.
"Well, we aren't engaged or mated yet. Our family's situation is a bit..." he looks down to hide his gloomy face. Zade knows the pressures of family.
"You love her?" Zade asks the most obvious question.
"Duh! Of course!" seems like the old Abir is back, "How do you mate without love? You don't love...." He stops to ask her name but Zade says it.
"Evelyn."
"Yeah, Evelyn. You don't love her?" his expression being hardened.
"I....." Zade starts to speak but Ivory enters their office.
"And the gossip queen bee has already started," She chuckles and goes forward to peck Abir's lips.
"I was just asking him about his life!" He pouts awfully but Ivory gives him a half hug.
"I was just kidding, honey," She keeps her hand towards Zade, "Hi, nice to meet you! I am Ivory, head of the Factual Editing Department."
Zade shakes her hand and gives her a warm smile. Another wolf.
"Hey, I am Zade, assistant in the creative section," he smiles back.
"Wow! I am jealous. You get an assistant and I get timid interns to train," Her expression narrowed looking at one of the interns trying to turn on the xerox machine but failing miserably. She sighs once more at Abir and then turns to Zade, "You are lucky to have a boss like him. I get it that you met Brent already?" she chuckles looking at Abir as if it is some inside joke.
"Oh yes, he did! I had to steal Zade away from him," They both laugh. Zade felt good being around wolves again.
"You sure he isn't gay?" Abir continues the joke.
"Last time I saw," she whispers the next in their ears, "He was with the CEO of Sunshine Motel."
"Ewww, that old hag?" Abir looks back at Zade and continues a story, "She wouldn't even rent us a room last time and we had to stay the night out, in freaking cold! We all went on a trip and Brent forgot to book rooms." He just shrugs at the thought of them being together.
"Well, at least one of you got a room?" Zade winks at them and tries to add to the joke.
They both laugh and Abir pats his shoulder, "I like you."
"Where is Inara? I thought I saw her," Ivory talks between her tears because she was laughing too hard. Abir stops after hearing her name and he frowned.
"The hospital. They called in for another emergency..." He was still frowning. Zade knew that he wasn't a part of 'this' conversation.
"Let's go to meet her after we leave office, okay?" Ivory assures him and he smiles back.
Ivory goes back to that miserable intern and gives him an earful. The whole office was echoing with her voice.
"She is a feisty one," Zade comments, and Abir chuckles, sitting on his chair.
"Your computer already has some files. Why don't you start working on them for now?" Abir says looking at his computer.
"Yep!" Zade sits on his desk but he was wondering something.
"Shoot," Abir says.
"What?" Zade is confused.
"You want to ask me something. My wolf instincts are pretty good so I can sense when someone is thinking about me," He looks at him with sparkling eyes.
"Who is Inara?" Zade gathers up his courage.
"Oh, she is...." Abir was going to say something but Brent came knocking on their door.
"I pay you guys for work, not gossip," He winks at them, "Have you briefed Zade yet?" he leans on the doorframe.
"Yep. Already did!" Abir nods.
"What about the rookie writer's novel? Have we sent him the edited preface?" Brent questions him knowingly. Abir looks busted as he runs down the printing room.
"I will be back in some time, Zade. Make sure you finish those today," He points at the files on his computer and rushes out.
"Inara is the Chief Editor of our company. She was supposed to brief you today but an emergency came up. She will be taking a leave for a week. You guys have to help her complete all the work, okay?" Brent asks him as soon as Abir left the room, looking hopeful.
"Yes, sir!" Zade says with determination.
"Just call me Brent. Welcome to our office!" He clicks his tongue and walks off.
Abir rushes back in, panting, "I forgot...the actual file....in here...." he chuckles and hits his head as if he is a stupid person.
"Brent is a human right?" Zade asks curiously.
"Yeah. But sometimes, he just smells too much of a human. Like cologne and stuff," He is rummaging through his desk to find the copy and signals Zade to help him.
"I hate that. I like natural scents," Zade says.
"Me too!" he finally finds the copy, "Aah! I can already picture us being best friends!" He chuckles and pats Zade's shoulders.
Before going, he says one last thing, "But don't fall for it. He knows about us," It sounds more like a warning to Zade.
"He knows about us being wolves?" Zade looks shocked, "Is it safe?" Humans and wolves mingling, not a good idea.
"Yeah. The director is the one who chose him so..." Abir shrugs off his concern.
"Who is the director?" Zade should stop with the questions but this company was too ahead of its time.
"Victor. He is the Alpha leader of his pack but he has been resting for a while," Abir fills him in with all the details. It seems Zade did not research the company at all.
"So, Brent isn't scared of us?" Zade sits back in his chair, amused.
"Well, what can we say? He is an extraordinary human," They both chuckle and Abir says his goodbyes.
But Zade was left with another thought in his mind.
"Why was Inara smelling different then?"
