Brent opens his door the next day to a not so unexpected guest.
"Hey, gorgeous. You are here early!" he exclaims, looking at Evelyn up and down.
"Where is Victor?" she asks ignoring him.
"Nuh-uh, doll! You don't get to order us here." she looks smug. He leans forward and sniffs her, "Hmm...you smell good!" he smirks.
"Stop playing with her Brent and bring her inside." Victor's voice startles both of them. Evelyn steps inside hesitantly. Even though she had been working with them for years, she never really saw them in person. She always talked to an assistant or someone. So, this must be huge. The Black Alders must be planning something huge.
"Has he resigned yet?" Victor asks casually sipping his tea inside this big mansion.
"Not yet. Odin has sent him the resignation letter but he will take some time." She sits down on the sofa even though she wasn't asked to, "But I saw something interesting last night."
"My fiancรฉ met with an accident last night. But I saw Inara there too. In a hospital gown. There were two more minions with them."
"Were they talking about something?" Victor leans in. This was getting interesting.
"No actually. This is where it gets confusing. Zade always had Inara's back but he was pissed at her for something. Believe me, I know when he is pissed. And he wasn't even talking to those two minions in the room." Evelyn says.
"Abir and Ivory," Brent says.
"Our little minion did lie to us. Along with Zade." Victor gets up with a smirk. He was talking about Abir and how Zade covered it for them.
"Why is Inara so special?" Evelyn finally asks it. It had been bugging her ever since she knew her name.
"She is the key to everything." Victor gets up to leave, "Escort the lady out, please." He looks at Brent.
Once they are out, Evelyn looks at Brent.
"Spill up. What is it about Inara?" Evelyn has her hands crossed.
"What makes you think I'll tell you?" Brent cross-questions her.
"I don't work for the Black Alders just to get nothing." She answers.
"Victor will give you everything he has promised once he deems you fit." He says.
"And when will that be? Like last time? How I was fool enough to rat my sister out and get stuck in this dead hole!" she says frustratingly.
"Look, I don't know what you are trying to get out of me, but I don't know anything about what my brother is planning." He looks at her and says goodbye.
Evelyn clenches her teeth. Now she has to know about Inara. By hook or by crook.
"Do you think Zade knows about Inara already?" Brent questions. That is why Zade would act like that.
"I hope so." Victor was happy that it was heading in the right direction.
"What do you think he would do?" he asks.
"He thinks Kyros killed his pack. And you know what rage does to a wolf." Victor was playing with the necklace.
"But his wolf doesn't even talk to him." Brent is confused.
"I don't know where he is getting his strength. I know this Evelyn chick isn't his mate." Victor was still confused about the night at the hospital. Zade successfully dodged his pheromones.
"Maybe Odin or Damon?" Brent tries to think.
"Odin is too old for any magic. And this isn't something that magic could recreate. Damon isn't dead yet so no Alpha king powers." Victor sits down again, "But one of the two things would happen."
"If Zade comes to know about Inara's pack, he will take his revenge by killing Kyros, which will trigger Inara's memories. Or, if he goes all softie on her and talks about the history between the two packs, that will trigger some memories too." Victor had thought about this up till now.
"What about Evelyn?" Brent asks curiously. He has had a growing interest in her.
"I have it planned out for her. You don't need to worry." Victor says, going into his room.
"You wouldn't hurt her, right?" Brent knew his ruthless brother. He wouldn't stop at anything until he gets what he wants.
"Do not mix with the low-bloods." Victor warns him, "You let them do our dirty work but you do not mix yourself with them."
Zade was trying to wear his clothes when Inara comes into his room.
"I can help." She offers but Zade just coldly denies it.
"No. I can do it myself." He struggles but finally puts his shirt on. "And if I were you, I wouldn't be standing in front of someone who just tried to kill you a few hours ago."
"Zade, I...I don't know what to say..." she truly is speechless.
"Then don't. Just leave." He replies coldly.
"Zade, just listen to me." She tries to make a feeble attempt to talk to him.
"My entire pack, Inara!" he finally looks at her but he only had hurt in his eyes, "I came back to find the entire generation of my family wiped out. I have the right to not listen to anything!"
"Zade...I am...all new to this..." it was true. She didn't even know she was a wolf until last night and now her brother is a murderer.
"Well lucky you. Because some of us do have our memories and I still remember how I spent months after coming back finding my wolves to bury them." He pushes her out of the room.
"Zade! Stop blaming me for something I don't remember!" she finally yells at him.
"No one is blaming you." he cuts her sentence, "I blame your brother. Now, leave!" he bangs the door on her face.
Inara takes a long sigh and places her hand on the door, hoping that Zade was listening to her.
"Zade...I don't know what would make you think otherwise but if I knew, if I had my memories at that time or hell even if I was awake during that time, you know I would have done things differently, right? I would have protected them no matter what." She says this and leaves.
Little did she knew, Zade heard everything through the door. And he doesn't know why he was clutching his heart as if it was in pain.
His mate was in so much guilt that he was feeling her pain.
Or was it Zade, denying the fact that he must be wrong. Kyros wasn't a murderer.
