Zade looks at his phone ringing. He was just about to pack his things up to leave when he sees two missed calls from Evelyn and one from Odin. It was weird as Odin never calls him unless it is very important.
He calls him back and Odin picks in the first ring.
"Where are you?" Odin asks.
"In the office. Is everything okay?" dreading to hear about Damon.
"Come home," Odin says.
Zade looks around him. He was done for the day but Inara wasn't in the office. Neither was Abir and Ivory was too busy with her work. He was starting to get worried about Inara.
"Now." Odin asserts his command on Zade.
"Yes, okay." Zade has no other choice. He could meet up with Inara tomorrow anyways.
"What? Why?" Zade asks Odin, confused.
"The stars aren't aligned well." Odin shows a constellation map to Zade. "I am worried about your safety."
"So, you want me to stop working because of some stars? What bullshit!" Zade gets aggressive.
"Language!" Odin warns.
"Sorry." Zade tones his voice down, "But I can't just quit my job. You know it is the only thing that keeps me sane!" Zade pleads to him.
"I am telling you to take a break for some time. Work on your bond with Evelyn." Odin suggests.
"Bonding, my foot!" Zade's tone changes again.
"She was here today." Odin surprises Zade with this. "And her crystal was fading."
Zade looks relatively shocked by it. But a part of him felt relieved.
"But..." Zade doesn't know what to answer.
"I don't blame you. People can get swayed away sometimes." Odin says, hinting at something. "But remember to come back where you belong. We cannot afford to lose another Alpha." He reminds Zade of Damon's condition.
"But....but I don't understand." Zade is confused, "How can the crystal fade when it is blessed?"
"The crystal mostly works due to the love; the bond that soulmates have. No magic or blessing can recreate it completely. It is just a temporary solution until you find something or someone to bond with."
"But...I don't love anyone." Zade says referring to Odin's 'swaying away' comment.
"It might not be love. Just a passing attraction. Your heart is swaying." Odin remarks.
"Odin..."
"You need to be careful with the type of people you mingle with. We don't want any more wars. The last two did enough damage." Odin reasons.
"I....I need to think about it." He doesn't want to leave his job. But was he really getting swayed away by Inara?
"I want a positive answer." Odin asserts and goes into Damon's room.
Zade sits there for some time, trying to come up with a solution that doesn't require him to leave his job. He notices a card on the table.
"We had a visitor?" he walks towards it and takes it in his hand. Upon examining it, he realizes it was his company's card.
"Someone from the company was here?" he looks at the card suspiciously.
"You will really make him quit his job?" Damon looks at Odin with puppy eyes. He heard everything from the time when Evelyn came, Victor put out his warning and Zade's desperate attempts of understanding what is good for him.
"I did my part of the warning. The rest is his choice." Odin says, applying some medicine on his wounds.
"But you know he will keep the pack first," Damon argues. He knows his little brother.
"I don't know. I left the card on the table." He shrugs it off. Odin was uncertain as to how he should let Zade tackle the situation.
"I thought you wouldn't tell him about Victor's visit." Damon sounds surprised.
"Technically I didn't. He found it out by himself." Odin winks at Damon.
"I still can't believe that Victor had the guts to come back here." Damon looks angry.
"The Elders have given him the authority now."
"I see why the Alaskan packs have become a bunch of nut jobs and rogue wolves." Damon scoffs.
"I don't want Zade to get involved in all of this but we have to know more about Inara." Odin expresses his dilemma. "It seems like Zade is getting tilted towards her. And Victor seems to have some beef with her."
"Odin," Damon shakily holds his hands, "If Zade's life is in danger, I don't want that cure from the girl. I don't want to involve my family with the Black Alders." He pleads with him.
"But we still don't know the identity of Inara, Alpha King. We didn't know she even existed a month ago and now she is working in the same office as Zade. If she has a cure like the books say, then she must be a wolf. And that is why even Victor is behind her." Odin tries to reason.
"Be careful, Odin. I told you I don't want any cure that might hurt Zade. I don't want you to push him into something he isn't willing to do." Damon pleads again.
"That's why I kept the choice to Zade. If he quits, I'll know these are just coincidences. But if he stays back, we know it's the gods that are trying to say something."
Zade pulls his car right in front of his house, staring at the business card. He keeps getting bad vibes.
"How did they find my ancestral home when I had given them this address? Who could have come?" Zade has a bad feeling that it might be Victor.
He walks inside to give an earful to Evelyn. But a familiar scent hit him again.
He opens the door, his heart beating fast.
"Oh! You are back!" Evelyn greets him with a smile and puts a peck on his lip.
But Zade stands there, stone cold.
That familiar, intoxicating scent. That dammed scent!
Inara!
She finally turns her head towards him,
"Hey Zade!" she greets him with a smile.
