7 | The Weight Of Us

"They've been calling for me?" Maya asked again, still trying to wrap her brain around.

"Yes and we aren't sure why," Bonnie repeated.

"You're positive?"

"100%"

"What am I supposed to do?"

"That's what you're here to find out."

Bonnie and Maya were casting a spell in an attempt to open the coffin, but it's still locked shut.

"Why won't you open?!" Bonnie shouted in aggravation.

"I'm going to see if I can find anything that can help. I'll be back in 30," Maya said before she went to leave but she was suddenly thrown back by an invisible force. She let out a groan in pain as the coffins disappeared and the floorboards began to creak.

"Hello? Someone there?"

Bonnie told Maya to stay put so it wouldn't happen again and went to investigate. She was about to head up the stairs when she saw Damon, who gestured for her to stay quiet. She obeyed. Damon vamp-sped away and left Bonnie confused.

Bonnie left a little while after, leaving Maya, who couldn't leave because the witches wouldn't let her, with Damon and Stefan.

Damon had been hitting the coffin with a shovel for the past hour but nothing has happened.

"Why don't you just give up?" Maya asked from her position on the floor. The witches wouldn't allow Maya to leave for who knows what reason.

"You're wasting your time. It won't open," Stefan said and then asked, "Did you bury the body?"

"Yeah," Damon said as though it should be obvious, "Any sign of our little hybrid buddies?"

"Nope, just the dead one."

"Alright, Klaus has 6 siblings. Rebekah is now with Klaus. There was one dead kid in the old world, one dead kid in the new world, which leaves Elijah and two others. Three sleeping originals, four coffins. So, who is in the locked box?"

"No idea. But whatever is in here, Bonnie seems to think will help us kill Klaus. So, the sooner she can get this open, the sooner we will know if she's right."

"Oh, you think the spirits of a bunch of dead witches that can make the coffins invisible would have figured out how to open one," Damon said looking up at the ceiling expectantly, "Fine, don't help."

"No..." Maya muttered mostly to herself but the two with vampire hearing turned to her in confusion.

"What is it wolfie?" Damon questioned

"It's...nothing."

"Right..." he said with uncertainty.

"You know, none of this is gonna do us any good if Klaus's hybrid friends find our hiding place, right? They need to go away," Stefan said ignoring Maya.

"Oh yeah, that's a great idea Stefan. Why don't you just ask them to pack their bags and take a long rest while we are at it. How about trying to keep the peace? Don't attract attention to the real thing we are trying to hide."

"Well, I'm not gonna play defense when I have what Klaus wants. He does what I say, or I dump his family to the bottom of the ocean."

"And then he kills you and everyone you know like, I don't know...us!"

"No, he's bluffing. His family means more to him than anything else."

"You sure about that?"

"Well I don't know Damon. I mean, I guess there's only one way to find out, right? Call his bluff."

"The only way to call someone's bluff, Stefan, is to be willing to lose everything if you're wrong."

Stefan then smiled at Damon before vamp speeding off, leaving Damon and Maya to figure out how to open the coffin on their own.

"I'm going to take a nap, wake me up if you figure it out," Maya said before finding a corner and drifting off.

Maya stood in front of the coffin that was raised slightly higher, Klaus was inside, holding Elena's necklace. She then reached in to grab it but she heard a noise behind her causing her to turn around.

No one was there. She then turned back to the coffin that Klaus was in but he had disappeared leaving an empty coffin. She turned back around and the three other coffins had disappeared.

"Is somebody there?" Maya said into the empty basement. Letting out a sigh, she went to leave but was stopped by an unfamiliar women. She was blonde, an average height but she gave off a bad vibe.

"I've been waiting a long time for this moment," the women said with a thick British accent.

"I'm sorry, who are you?"

"You'll know in due time."

"Why are you here?"

"I just came to to tell you that I will be returning to Mystic Falls."

"Returning? You've been here before?"

"A very long time ago. You will soon know."

"Why are you returning?" Maya asked as the mysterious women stepped closer to her.

"My son hasn't been on his best behavior."

"Your son...?"

She merely looked at her.

"Oh my god, your..."

She sent her a smile before stepping closer, she placed her hands on Maya's face, "I will see you soon." She then moved her hands to her neck and snapped it with ease. Maya shot up with a gasp, holding her neck.

"Woah, are you okay?" Damon asked from his position by the closed coffin.

"She was, she is, she..." Maya said starting to panic, taking in heavy breaths.

"Just try and calm down," Damon said walking over to Maya and bending down next to her.

"I-it..." she continued pointing to her neck, still unable to breathe properly.

"Okay, uh, I'm going to need you to do as I say, okay?"

She simply nodded in response.

"Breathe in for 4 seconds." She furrowed her eyebrows but did it anyway. "Hold it for 7." She continued unsure of what was happening. "Now, exhale for 8 seconds." She listened and after 8 seconds he informed her to keep going until she calmed down. After a minute or so she was able to breathe normally.

She looked down at her hands that laid in her lap, "Thank you."

"No problem," he said sitting down next to her now, "what happened?"

"It was just a dream."

"It's never just a dream with you witches."

She furrowed her eyebrows, she never asked for this, she didn't want to be a witch. She let out a sigh before explaining what had happened. "It started off as the dream that I had been having up until finding this place. But then, instead of waking up when I turned around there was just no one there. Klaus had disappeared and then the other three coffins did as well. I asked, like an idiot in a horror movie, who was there and someone walked out. She said that she had been waiting for this moment. She told me that she would be returning to Mystic Falls soon because her son hasn't been on his best behavior and then she killed me."

Damon furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, not understanding what she was saying. "Damon, it was Klaus's mother, she's the thing that can kill him. The thing inside of that coffin. The original witch."

Maya had been left on her own for awhile now until her phone rang. Damon left to meet Alaric for a council meeting and everyone else was who knows where.

"It's Caroline," Matt said on the other line of Maya's phone, "Tyler bit her."

"He did what?"

"Can you come to Caroline's house?"

"I'm sure as hell gonna try," she said before hanging up.

She then stood up and shouted at the witch spirits, "I'm leaving whether you like it or not. My friend is hurt and she needs me. Don't try and stop me."

She then exited the building with her eyes closed tight in hopes of the witches not getting angry. As she exited the building she let out a sigh of relief before sprinting to her car and speeding to Caroline's home.

She jumped out of the car and ran to the front door and opened it without knocking. "Where is she?" she immediately asked upon seeing Matt.

"In her room," Matt said and Maya nodded entering as calmly as she could.

"Hey..." Maya said quietly to her friend who looked miserable but she wouldn't say so to her face.

Maya heard voices out in the living area but chose to ignore them as she got in bed with Caroline, "How are you feeling?"

"Could be worse..." she mumbled quietly turning over to face Maya.

"Happy Birthday," Maya said smiling slightly at her when she saw who entered the room causing her to scowl.

"What is it?" Caroline asked as she turned over, her face paled.

"Are you going to kill me?" Caroline asked weakly, she was laying at just the right angle to where Klaus couldn't see Maya.

"On your birthday? You really think that low of me?"

"Yes," Caroline said bluntly.

Klaus walked over as Maya hid under the blanket, he observed the bite, "That looks bad. My apologies, you're what's known as collateral damage. It's nothing personal, he says touching the bracelet on her wrist, "I love birthdays."

"Yeah. Aren't you like...a billion, or something?" Caroline asked causing Maya to laugh from under the blanket, she quickly covered her mouth. She knew that Klaus had heard her so she sat up from her previous position.

"Well you have to adjust your perception of time when you become a vampire, Caroline. Celebrate the fact that you're no longer bound by trivial human conventions. You're free," he said ignoring Maya.

"No, I'm dying."

Klaus then sat on the bed and said, "And I could let you die, if that's what you want. If you really believe your existence has no meaning. I thought about it myself, once or twice over the centuries, truth will be told. But I'll let you in on a little secret. There is a whole world out there, waiting for you. Great cities and art and music, genuine beauty. And you can have all of it. You can have a thousand more birthdays. All you have to do is ask."

"I don't wanna die."

Klaus then lifted Caroline's head up and offered her his wrist, "There you go, sweetheart. Have at it."

"Wait," Maya said stopping Caroline from taking a bite, "What's the catch?"

"No catch, not this time. Think of it as a birthday present," Klaus said before bringing his wrist to Caroline's mouth and she bit into it, "Happy birthday Caroline."

Maya said her goodbyes to Caroline, the Sheriff, and Matt and followed Klaus out. "Wait," she shouted after him.

He turned around confused, "I'm surprised that you even want to speak to me."

"I want to apologize."

"You do?" he said clearly taken by surprise.

"I was wrong, you do care about people other than yourselves. Even if you're the reason they were put in that position, you still came through."

He looked at her, they were a few feet apart and neither of them moved. They continued staring at each other until the shrill of a phone broke the staredown. Maya jumped slightly at the sudden noise and looked down at her phone. It was Damon.

"Hello?" she asked.

"Hey, um, something happened. I know I said I would come back but I have to be here for Elena."

"You're fine. I'm at Caroline's right now, I'm heading home. Tyler bit her."

"Is Vampire Barbie okay?"

"Uh, yeah, Klaus came, he gave her his blood."

"He did? Why?"

"I'm not sure," she said looking over to where Klaus had previously stood but he was gone.

She hung up the phone and went home. She was in dire need of a shower and proper sleep. She got in the shower as soon as she got home, appreciating the hot water that ran down her back. She had a long day and honestly couldn't wait to sleep. She hopped out of the shower and wrapped herself in a towel before entering her room.

She looked at her night stand, she noticed a navy blue, rectangular, velvet-covered box with a note inscribed "From Klaus." She picked up the note that read, "I'm sorry, too." She opened the box and inside there was a beautiful and expensive looking gold bracelet embedded with diamonds. She couldn't help but smile as she closed the box and got a good night sleep for the first time in a long time.
