23| Mason

Mason pressed the calling bell and waited. Evelyn stood behind him waiting. Moments later, the door opened and Ethan's face peeked from behind it.

"Here he is," Ethan said loud enough for everyone to hear who were inside. He came out and gave a bro hug to Mason. Mason looked back at Evelyn who were looking at Ethan with wide eyes.

"Hello, Evelyn." Ethan said smiling. Evelyn blinked.

"I thought we were...," She looked at Mason. Mason grinned.

"We are at my friend's house. " He pointed at Ethan who had already opened the door wide enough and had gone inside.

Evelyn squinted her eyes. "Didn't know you have friendship with middle aged men."

Mason grinned in reply and walked back inside. He was soon crashed by the twins who were climbing on him as soon as he fell butt-first on the floor.

"Did you bring the game?" Asked one that was sitting on his lap. The other one was trying to climb on his shoulder. In attempt to climb him, he grabbed Mason's ears.

"Ow! Tim!" Mason cried. It was quite hard to tell between the identical twin brother who were who. But Mason always could tell somehow. Maybe because he was a twin too.

"I asked, did ya brought my games?" James asked as he started jumping up and down on his thighs.

Tim was already upon his shoulders and pulling his hair. "Where is my game?"

"Boys! Boys! " Mason said and they both stopped and looked at him.

"I brought Evelyn," He said and pointed at Evelyn who was standing a feet away with an amused expression in her face. One might say she was trying really hard not to laugh.

The twins looked at her then back at Mason, "What?"

They looked bored. "Are we going to play Evelyn?"

If they only knew what they meant.

"No, you are not going to play Evelyn. You are going to play with Evelyn." Mason said. Evelyn on the other side cracked in laughter.

James look confused. "Same thing."

Tim nodded.

"Hey boys, I don't mind if you play me." She said cracking in laughter. Mason gave her a bored expression.

"What are you, a pedophile?" Mason complained. "They are only nine."

Evelyn looked like she was trying so hard to stop laughing. "At least, they are better than the douches we have at school."

Mason pouted. "Not all of them are douche. There is exception."

Evelyn rolled her eyes.

Mason was about to say something but someone again crashed on his lap. "Mason!"

He opened his arms and hugged Raine. She giggled throwing her head back as he tickled her.

"Oww ow, stop, Mason bear." She said giggling.

"How's the princess doing?" Mason asked throwing her over his shoulder as he stood up.

"Princess is good," She said laughing and poked her fingers in his cheek. Mason couldn't help grinning.

"Do you want to meet the ice queen?" Mason whispered in her ear.

Raine looked at him with her eyes wide with the childish wonder. Covering her mouth with her hand, she whispered in his ear, " There is a ice queen?"

"Yes, I know her secret. Don't tell anyone, okay?" Mason said.

"Okay." She nodded her with much enthusiasm. Mason pressed his lips together and walked where Evelyn was standing watching their family photos. "There she is. The ice queen."

Raine stood on her feet as Mason put her down. She walked towards Evelyn with her little steps. She stood there with her head upwards staring at Evelyn, then she looked back at Mason. Mason nodded and encouraged her.

Rained poked at Evelyn's feet. Evelyn realized and turned. When Evelyn saw Raine, she opened her mouth a bit. She knelt quickly and smiled at Raine.

Raine didn't appreciate it. She turned and ran towards Mason. She hugged Mason's knee and Mason bent down. "Mason bear, save me."

"What happened?" Mason asked.

"The ice queen wants to eat me." She said pointing at Evelyn.

"What?!" Evelyn cried. "No, no, why would I eat you?" Evelyn stalked towards them and Raine hid in Mason's chest.

"And Ice queen, huh?" Evelyn said narrowing her eyes at Mason.

"Don't eat my little princess, Ice queen." Mason begged. "Spare her life and take mine." He said in a dramatic voice, shrieking. "I will do whatever you want to. I will be yours forever. Let my little princess go."

Evelyn placed her both hands on her hip glaring. After a few moments, her lips twitched upward slightly. "Oh, fine. Go and lock yourself in the deepest dungeon and never come back again. As for the little princess, I will let her go."

Pulling Raine back from his chest, he said to her, "I saved you, my little princess."

"But you have to go to the dungeons. I will miss you Mason bear." Raine said almost fake sniffing. She was quite the actress.

"I will miss you, too." Mason stood up and made his way. As he climbed up the stairs, he turned and saw Evelyn looking down at Raine.

Raine and Evelyn needed a little bonding time but good thing was Evelyn was catching up. Or that was he thought.

"So you and Mason are in the same grade?" Madyline asked and Evelyn nodded.

"I have heard so much of you from Ethan and Mason," Madyline said as she put the food inside her mouth. Evelyn gave Mason a look. Mason replied with the same look.

Madyline was someone who was closest to him after his mom. Madyline and his mom, Sarah, they were best friends. Madyline was like his mom.

"Tell me what you want do for college." She said smiling. Evelyn gulped.

"I am thinking of going to New York." Evelyn replied looking down.

"That's great!" Madyline said. "You should totally keep trying for that."

"Thanks," Evelyn gave a small smile.

"Our Mason wants to go to Stanford." She said with her eyes shining in pride. "I am sure he will make it."

Mason silently munched on his food. If only everything went as planned, he thought.

"And also, I have something to tell you all." She said. They were almost done with dinner. Ethan was already serving himself twice. Mason was done. Evelyn hardly ate something, which raised a brow from Mady but she didn't say anything. The kids were still playing with their foods.

All of them looked up. "I want to tell you that, I am finally going to open the restaurant. Everything has been arranged."

Ethan narrowed his eyes. Evelyn looked at her with a questioning eyes. Mason smiled.

"But I thought we ran out of money for this." Ethan said with a confused expression. Madyline nodded.

"Yes. We did." She looked at Mason and Mason shook his head no.

Mady promised she would not tell anyone. Ethan would hate to know that he had to take help from Mason, from anyone.

"Mason, my dear sold his car." She said smiling.

"He what? " Ethan's eyes popped.

Mason looked around searching for a place to hide. "You did what?"

Mason covered his face with his arms, "She promised me free food."

"I will never pay if I eat on your restaurant, I swear."

Ethan calmed down a little. "But only till you have your money there. After you cross it, you have to pay."

He finally approved. Mason sighed in relief.

"Nah, I never will. My kids, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren all will eat from your restaurant for free." Mason joked.

Ethan rolled his eyes. Madyline laughed.

"Pop out one or two first, then we can think about it." Madyline said.

Mason shrugged and looked at Evelyn who was still narrowing her eyes. Mason asked her what was up.

She nodded as if nothing had happened.

Soon Madyline served desert and all of them almost licked their plates. Mason tried to but of course he could not. He had to act decent.

But the kids did. Although Madyline told them not to. Tim even got slapped slightly on his head for almost breaking his plate while licking. The pudding was that good.

But Madyline didn't serve it all. Mason didn't miss a peak when Mady opened the fridge. There was cake stored and also stacks of muffins. He was sure he saw ice cream too.

But he quickly looked away when Mady turned his way. He followed the kids up to their room when Evelyn offered stayed down to help Mady wash off.

Mason was busy playing games with the boys when Evelyn peeked in the room. "Hey," Mason waved.

Evelyn walked inside and sat down on the recliner. He was playing multiplayer with Tim while James was mauling him from the other side.

"Hey," a girly voice spoke and Mason saw Raine holding her teddy bear and poking Evelyn.

"Can you read me a story?" Raine asked batting her lashes and giving her the best puppy eyes. Mason would have turned into a puddle of water if it was pulled on him but the ice queen, she was looking at her as if she was lost in thoughts.

She didn't reply.

"Pwease?" Raine said again.

"Sure." Evelyn said after a while. She dragged Evelyn towards her, "My room is that way."

Evelyn stood up and followed her out of the room.

"And yessssss! I won!" Tim's voice finally pulled Mason back to what he was doing.

"You what? " Mason asked not getting a thing.

"Why are you smiling? You just lost a game with me." Tim asked narrowing his eyes.

"I am what?" Mason shook his head and then he looked back at the screen. It showed he had lost the game against Tim. He had lost against a nine years old.

"What is wrong with me? I keep losing again and again." Mason wiggled his eye brows.

"You were looking at Evelyn. " James said from the other side.

Ugh what.

"You like Evelyn. " James said again.

Mason choked on his spit and coughed. "What?!"

"You like Evelyn." Tim said.

"For God's sake. You little kids, who spoiled your brain." Mason shuddered.

"We watched in a movie." James said and Tim nodded.

"What movies you have been watching lately?" Mason asked both of them. They gave a guilty smile.

"We are not idiots." James said like he knew everything. "You were smiling at her the whole day."

"Yes, and you keep running into things while looking at her and you almost toppled over a chair." Tim said and nodded.

"I what?" Mason said. "That's because you guys left a piece of lego on the floor and I almost stepped on it." Mason reasoned.

"Why did you step on it?" Tim asked.

Mason was looking at Evelyn who was talking to Raine. He was only checking if they were good.

"You liiiiiiiiiiiiiiike Evelyn," Tim yelled. Mason jumped and covered his mouth.

"I don't. You spoiled kid." Mason said.

"You never brought any friend here. But you brought Evelyn. " James said and he looked like he was really happy to say that.

"Yes!" you like Evelyn. "

"Stop it, kids. You are only kids. What do you know about that?" Mason asked and scoffed.

"We know more than you." Tim said and James nodded.

"And we also know that," Tim looked at James and his eyes lit up.

"You also know what?" Mason asked raising his brow.

"That you are going to, " They walked towards him as if they were going to attack him.

"Kiss Evelyn." They said in unison.

What the-

"What?! " Mason shrieked.

"Yes, you are going to..." They said and Mason covered his ears. "You little devils, stop it."

They cracked in laughter. "Did ya shit your pants?"

"What?" They were no kids. They were Satans, straight up Satans.

"You look scared. Mason looks scared. " Tim patted on him as he laughed.

"I- I am going to seize your games. I am going to find out what movies you boys been watching lately. You kids are so going to regret it." Mason said as he stood up.

"I will teach you boys a lesson." He threatened them as he walked out.

"We will tell Evelyn. " James said from behind.

Mason stopped dead on his tracks and he turned, "You are going to what?"

"We are going to tell Evelyn. Then she will beat you up." He said.

What? She surely will but how did they know?

"What? Why would you think she will beat me up?" Mason said.

"Yes, because girls are stupid. Our friend Harry said to a girl that he liked her and she slapped him. "

Tim nodded his head in agreement. "Yes, yes girls are disgusting. "

"How old are you boys again? And who is this friend that is already going after girls?'

" Harry is really cool. " James said.

"Yes, but I don't know why he likes Myra. Myra is disgusting and annoying."

James nodded. "I know, all girls are."

They were still in that phase where they thinks girls are disgusting. Mason said, "I will talk to you boys, three or four years later and ask you how disgusting girls are. And we will see."

"But Evelyn is not that disgusting. " James said.

"Yes, she doesn't talk about Barbie dolls and Disney and frozen." Tim said.

"Hmm, she even asked me about which games I like to play and she knew some of them." James said eyes wide.

"Yes. She is really cool." Tim nodded his head. They both looked at Mason.

"I think you should tell her how you feel. Maybe she will not slap you. She will understand. " James said.

"Yes, yes, I know she will," Tim nodded.

Mason contemplated their advice for a moment before mauling James' ear. "I should tell her how I feel huh?" he asked in a dangerously low voice.

James shrieked. Tim jumped out of the sofa.

"Save us, save us. Mason is attacking James." He yelled until Mason turned and pulled him and tossed him towards the sofa.

"Evelyn, we got something to tell you!" James was already down the door when Mason had to go after him.

"You are not going to utter a single word." He covered his mouth.

Tim jumped on the other side. "I will, I will "

Mason looked at Tim and then down at James. Both of them had a mischievous look on their faces. They were brewing trouble in their heads. But Mason knew better.

"Well, then I will not give you something I have." Mason said looking a little bit sad.

"I was looking forward to share it with you but I won't. " He stood up and walked. He waited for them to response.

Soon both of his knees were grabbed and he was dragged down to floor as Tim climbed on his back and James grabbed his arm.

"What is it?" they asked.

Mason grinned.
