She lets me down
Then gets me high
Oh I don't know why
She just my type
She's my device
I don't think twice
Oh I don't know why she's just what I like
But I, I, I love it
I, I, I love it
Love the way she plays with my head
She lets me down
Then gets me high
Oh I don't know why
She's just my type
-Just my type, The Vamps

21| Mason
Mason was staring up at the sky. The sun was about to go down. There were colors all around, orange, pink, purple. Violets and blue scattered out and about.
"Hey, would you like to go the next town with me? One of my friends live there. We can go on Saturday morning."
"Sure." Evelyn said still doing her maths homework.
Mason sat up in an instant. His books and copies were scattered around the grass. Evelyn was sitting with her copy in her lap. Her backpack lay open in one side.
"Did you just agree with me?" Mason asked just to be sure.
Evelyn rolled her eyes. "You heard me."
"I was mentally preparing myself on how I can convince you to go with me. And you just agreed. My thoughts went into waste." Mason said leaning back down on his back.
"Don't make me say it twice. I may change my mind." Evelyn said.
"You just agreed with me. I call it a progress."
"What?" Evelyn asked.
"Or my success." Mason shook his head affirmatively. "Absolutely my success, given my charming personality, nobody can resist saying yes to me."
Evelyn punched on the side of his arm and he looked up. "I won't go anywhere with you. Because you are a cocky bastard."
Mason sat up. "Nah, you will."
Evelyn packed her bag and stood up. "In your dreams."
Mason chuckled and gathered his things, shoved them inside his backpack. "Trust me, we go to certain places in my dreams."
Evelyn this times punched slightly on his nose and he leaned back. "And we get chased by zombies in my dreams."
Evelyn shook her head in horror and turned. Mason followed with a grin in his face.
"So you dream about me, huh?"
Evelyn stopped dead on her track. For a second, she didn't move and then she cleared her throat. "No, that was my worst nightmare."
She turned and stuck her tongue out. Mason cracked in laughter.
"Of course. Come on, confess, it was the best dream you ever got."
Evelyn gave a look of disgust before turning around again. Mason didn't bother, because messing with her was worth it.
They hopped on the jeep and Mason started the engine.

Mason set the ladder towards the window habitually. He remembered doing this since he was eight or maybe less. He would sneak out with Jack to prank Bryan or he would sneak out with Bryan to prank Jack. But he could not let mom know he was going out when he was grounded. When mom saw him, he would get grounded again. And that was only because of Mallory, as she could not keep her big mouth shut.
As always, Evelyn's windows were open so he got in with no problem. Putting off his shoes and keeping them aside, he turned.
Ugh the sleeping beauty.
Evelyn was sleeping on her back with her hair all over her. Stepping closer towards her, he leaned down so he was looking straight at her face. And then he couldn't help saying, "Boo!"
Evelyn's eyes fluttered open instantly and she blinked hard. When she saw him leaning down on her face, she exclaimed, "What the fuck!"
Mason chuckled and said, "Good morning, Evelyn."
Evelyn wasted no time to throw a punch straight on his nose. He had figured, punching aimlessly was Evelyn's reflex action.
"Hey, hey," He said as he fell back on floor and Evelyn sat up in the meantime.
"Why are you in my room?" She asked and looked at the window which was opened.
"Don't I have any privacy? How can you just get in here?" She asked crossing her arms over her chest. She threatened him as she stepped out of her bed.
Mason plopped down on the bed while Evelyn stretched her arms.
"I get in here by foot, you know." Mason tapped his foot on the floor."And you sound like a dying cat when you do that."
Evelyn wiggled her eyebrows then she rolled her eyes. Flipping her hair, she turned and made her way to the en-suited washroom.
"Are we leaving already?" She asked from there.
"Yep," Mason replied popping the p. "Get ready, quickly. I can't wait to leave."
Evelyn stuck her head outside. There was foam around her mouth from toothpaste. "You are that excited? Who is this friend? "
"Ah. You will see." He grinned and sat up and looked around the room as he felt bored. He made his way to Evelyn's bookshelf and skimmed a eye over it.
Voilà.
Mason took out a book with the hot pink cover and took a look at it. There was guy who was posing on a white horse. A chuckle rose from deep inside.
"I don't read this anymore! " Evelyn screamed and snatched the book from his hands. Mason cracked up.
"Was that your prince charming in white horse? " Mason couldn't stop laughing. Evelyn puffed and that made him laugh even more.
He took a breathe and wiped the fake tears off his eyes.
"Get away from here." She said covering the bookshelf from him.
Mason took a step forward, "What else you are hiding here, heh?"
She looked horrified for a moment and covered it up soon. "I used to read those gooey gooey books when I was stupid. I don't read them anymore. "
Evelyn said with a hard face. "They give you a delusion over reality. Reality is absolutely not like that."
"Oh." Mason replied. "But don't we read fictions to escape reality? It's why they call it fiction, which is imaginary? "
"Yes, but that doesn't mean it has to be absolutely ridiculous. Those books are." She said. Mason nodded.
Mason looked back at the shelf as Evelyn stepped aside. He found Frankenstein and took it out. He came back and plopped down on the bed as he skimmed over the book.
"Now, what should I pack?" Evelyn looked lost as she murmured under her breathe.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you, we will be staying the night."
"We, what?" Evelyn looked back with her eyes wide. Mason shrugged and looked back at the book.
"I said, we will be sleeping the night there. We will come back home tomorrow. Do you have problem with it?" He asked.
Seconds passed and Evelyn didn't reply so, Mason looked at Evelyn sticking his head out.
Evelyn was staring down at him looking absolutely beetroot red.
"Your mind is already in the gutter, Isn't it?" Mason asked biting the inside of his cheek.
Evelyn hurriedly looked away. She cleared her throat and Mason chuckled.
"Chill. " Mason said while reading. "They have enough rooms for both of us."
"Why didn't you tell me we will be gone for the night? " Evelyn said walking around her closet throwing stuffs towards her backpack.
"Also, we will go to the beach too."
Mason peeked at her from behind his book. Evelyn was standing there with her hands on her hip. Mason quickly looked away.
"Drop that book, now!" She said and stomped forward. Snatching the book from his hands, she huffed, "What else you didn't tell me?"
"Umm, nothing else?" He said.
Just that we are going over to the tatt guy's house.
"You better spill now. I hate surprises." She threatened.
You're gonna get so many.
"Can we do anything about that? " He asked.
"No," She replied and threw the book on his face.
"I get it, Evelyn. You get so intimidated to see my handsome face. That Doesn't mean you will keep throwing things at it."
"Your face looks like shit," She yelled from the other side.
"And your comebacks are worse than two years old. Really, who says that?" Mason chuckled.
"I hate you so much!" Evelyn said.
"There we go again," Mason rolled his eyes.
There was a slight sound of knock on the door. Mason dropped the book. He looked at Evelyn who looked at him. Then came another knock.
Mason realized they were probably screaming and that got her dad up.
"Shit," Mason said. There was another knock.
"Evelyn!" Her dad said. Evelyn was frozen in her place. Mason wasted no time plopping down from the bed on the floor and rolling under it. At least, now he was safe.
There was a slight crack of a door opening. "What is happening?" said Evelyn's dad.
"What is happening?" Evelyn's voice was heard. It sounded angry for some reason.
"I thought, I heard you screaming." Her dad said.
"So?" She replied.
"And also a male voice." Her dad said. Under the bed, Mason shifted uncomfortably.
"Yes, you know what," Evelyn said. "Mason! Get out of there. "
What?
Mason contemplated how embarrassing it would be to roll out from under a girl's bed in front of her dad. He took a deep breathe and rolled out anyway.
The things I have to do for Evelyn.
Getting out, he stood straight and removed the pecks of dust from his shirt and pant and then looked up at Evelyn's dad. "Good morning, sir." He said keeping his voice as normal as possible.
Evelyn's dad looked bored. He looked back at Evelyn.
"As you have come here, I and Mason, we are going to the next town for today, we will be staying there the night and come back tomorrow. " Evelyn said with a passive expression.
"And also I had no plans to tell you, but as you have taken the steps to climb to my room, I thought I should." Evelyn concluded.
Evelyn's dad was dead staring at Mason as if he was a criminal. Mason shifted from on foot to another.
"I thought, you don't get out of your room much. But I see that had changed." he said still looking at Mason.
He took a step forward and hovered over Mason, "If anything happens to my daughter, I will give you time to dig your own grave."
Mason raised his brow. As if he would let anything happen to her. Sometimes, he wondered where Evelyn dad was when she needed him. He only appeared when she was fine.
"I will take care, sir." Mason replied sternly.
Evelyn's dad nodded before stepping back. He was walking away but Evelyn's voice stopped him.
"As if you care. And I can take care of myself. I have been doing it for years."
He looked sad slightly but he didn't reply before closing back the door.
"As if you care!" Evelyn said again.
She was breathing heavily. She turned and spotted him. Covering her face with her fingers, she said, "I am so sorry, you have to see this."
"You have nothing to be sorry about." Mason assured.
"I don't even know why I am still living with him. I should have moved out long ago. I guess, I didn't have the courage." she pulled her hair.
Evelyn went back to her closet and Mason sat back down on her bed.
"I can't even remember when the last time, I have been to New York, when was the last time, I have seen Cecily and Gus."
Who are those people now?
"I can't even remember the face of my nanny, " She said. " When was the last time I saw her? Is she even alive?"
Evelyn stopped in her track and looked down at her feet.
Mason realized one thing and it made him feel bad in a way. For the first time, he got to realize how little he knew Evelyn and her childhood. He had only seen and known things from outside. Although he felt sometimes, he knew what was Evelyn gonna do next and he would feel like he had known her always. He still didn't know Evelyn.
"He had to do whatever he wanted to." She puffed and threw some more stuffs at her backpack. "He had to come for me. Did I ask him? "
Evelyn turned to the door, "I never did."
Mason took the cue to walk to her among the scattered clothes. " Just breathe."
She looked up with her hazel eyes filled with dollops of tears but they didn't roll. She looked away. Wiping her nose with the back of her hand, she said, "I try."
Mason stood there looking at her and then he looked around the mess she had made.
"Why I am packing so many things? We are only going for one day." She said leaning down and picking up clothes from the floor.
Mason picked up the clothes around his feet. " Stop."
He looked up at Evelyn. " You don't have to. Just give me a moment."
He sighed and stood up. He wanted to ask her if she was fine. But of course, she wasn't.
"I will go outside and wait in the car. You pack and have breakfast. I will wait." Mason said.
"Can I have breakfast outside?" Evelyn asked.
Mason thought about the breakfast places around. There should be some places open. "Yes, sure."
"Good." She kept picking up clothes and stacking them back into her closet. Mason turned towards the window and put on his shoes.
"Did you bring shoes inside my room?!" Suddenly Evelyn shrieked.
Mason only turned to see the look on her face. She looked furious with her eyes wide. She was hurrying down to him.
Mason didn't need to be told twice. He quickly climbed out of the room and set his foot in the ladder. "You asshole......."
Mason couldn't help grinning while he climbed down fast and crossed the road towards Rosy.
It was quite a morning.

Author's note: I am so lazy right now, I am lying down on my bed while I edit it. Trust me I am only able to publish before it was written long ago. I always knew there should be some advantages of writing ahead of schedule.
So how is your day going? Don't tell me it sucks like mine. I am going back to sleep.
