⭐ Zachary's POV ⭐
* knock knock *
"Mr Davis?" Olivia peeked into my office before I could say come in.
I lifted up my gaze from the financial report and quirked an eyebrow at her. Olivia's eyebrows are knitted together with a worried expression.
"Olivia, you can come in."
Before Olivia could react, she was pulled behind by Eva. I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose. A dull headache was pounding on my information overloaded brain.
Eva burst into my office with a pout. I waved a hand at Olivia to signal I could handle this. Correction, I hope I could handle this. Olivia silently closed the door with a soft click.
"Zachary..." Eva tugged at my folded sleeves to get my attention.
"Eva, what are you doing here?"
"To ask you if you're free for dinner later?"
I gave my watch a quick glance and slightly shook my head. Eva took that as an answer and grabbed my forearm in panic.
"Zachary, are you still mad at me?"
*flashback*
It was a Friday night and I was checking my letterbox. I planned to go for a jog around my neighbourhood before taking a cold shower. This past two months had been a nerve wrecking one. My company was on the verge of bankruptcy and I just managed to save it.
I looked through my mails, inwardly sighed as I saw the bank sent me a 'love letter'. I decided to tear open the bank letter first when I stepped into the lift. Might as well get this over and done with, since I have to face the cruel reality that I am almost broke. My eyes stared at the letter in disbelief as the amount I have to pay was way more than I had expected.
*ding*
The lift door slide open and I pressed the number one. No matter how tired I felt, this has to be settled right away. I brisk walk to my car and slip into the driver's seat, the interior was still cooling.
I stepped hard on the accelerator and saw the speed meter jumped from a 5 to 80. I squeezed the steering wheel tightly and honked at a random car which blocked my way. Perhaps I honked a few more times than necessary. Who cares when anger clouded my brain like a disease. I could not control my emotions as the frustration in me was so overwhelming.
The gates that shielded the residents in it from outsiders came into my sight. I forced my angry nerves to calm down as it's not polite to vent your anger on innocent people.
"Hi, Mr Davis!" Mike, the security guard of Eva's condo greeted me cheerfully.
"Hey there, Mike." I thought it would be hard to smile at him genuinely, but Mike's friendly attitude helped me on that.
Mike copied down my car number as usual before letting me into the condo. My sleek silver Mercedes car fitted perfectly into the parking lot. With a flick of my wrist, I felt the whole car died down. Well, because the aircon was turned off. I took several breaths in and out before unlocking the door.
My strides to the lift were heavy and long. My mind was forming lots of scenarios that could happen later on. None of them was good and I hope it would not turn out that way.
I was so preoccupied with my thoughts that I did not realise that I have reached Eva's home. The large oak door was taunting me to knock it down. However, being the gentleman I am, I calmly pressed the doorbell. My surrounding was so quiet that I could hear the doorbell rang inside Eva's home.
"Oh hey, Zachary." Eva yawned away her sleepiness and tilted her head to the side.
I was so tired, instead of beating around the bush I immediately handed her the letter. Eva glanced at it with a skeptical look on her face.
"Read it." My tone was harsher than I meant to.
Eva did not seem to be shocked by my attitude and opened the bill. I quietly observed Eva's reaction as she read the bill. It seemed forever for Eva to say something about this. At last, Eva raised an eyebrow at me and did not say anything. Eva squinted her eyes and looked like she's observing my facial expression too.
"So, is this why you came all the way here at 12am?" Eva questioned me slowly and carefully.
"Why wouldn't I?" I answered her with a question of my own.
"Because it was you who gave me your supplementary credit card. Besides, I've only spent a thousand dollars on a bag. What's the big fuss about?"
"Only spent a thousand dollars?! You clearly know that I have been fighting hard to keep my company from bankruptcy. Yet, you still spend this much money on a bag?" I barely held onto my burning anger within me. After countless reminders, Eva simply refused to change her horrible spending habits.
Eva's face hardened visibly and pressed her lips firmly together.
"Stop complaining if you can't even afford to buy me a bag." Eva slammed the door right in my face.
One moment later, Eva unlocked the door and threw the bill at me.
"I'll return you the money." That was all Eva said before she shut the door.
I bent over to pick up the unwanted bill and sighed. I came over to give Eva a piece of my mind, yet she's the one who's angry at me for being angry at her. What an irony. In the end, I can only walk away to get my car.
*present-time*
"Zachary? Are you even listening to me?" Eva's voice cut through my daydream and instantly brought me back to reality.
"No, I'm not angry with you," I answered her and sifting through my files to locate my pen.
"Then why won't you have dinner with me?"
I chuckled softly despite my anger towards Eva.
"I didn't say that."
Eva's eyes lit up with hope and asked again. "So, you will have dinner with me?"
"Regarding last night..." I trailed off casually while finding my pen under all those files.
Eva's hand was off of my forearm in an instant.
"Zachary, I know I've crossed the line last night. I'm sorry for saying those awful things to you."
"It's not about what you said. We've been through this all before. I sincerely hope you will control your spending habits." I held up a finger as Eva looked like she wanted to say something.
"I'm not saying you cannot buy anything. Just don't buy unnecessary things. Like the thousand dollar bag you just bought." I gently reminded Eva and she kept her eyes downcast.
"But, Zachary, I really really like that bag. It's a limited edition bag, and I barely managed to grab the last one." Eva replied softly and a fat drop of tear fell on my wooden table.
She's doing it again, I thought to myself with an inward sigh. After making a certain someone cried, I was determined not to make my girlfriend cry. However, I've been failing my goal. Eva always ended up crying whenever we're in an argument. Why? As she knows tears are my weakness.
This time, I simply stared at her as tears rolled down her foundation caked cheeks. Eva sensed the coldness in my attitude, she plucked a piece of tissue and wiped away her tears.
"Alright, I get it. I won't be spending money like water anymore. I am determined to change my bad habits, Zachary. Believe me." Eva's cherry lips came out with a little pout.
I ran my fingers through my hair, successfully making strands of my hair stood up.
"I believe you," I whispered into Eva's ears as I pulled her into a hug. Eva wrapped her arms around me in response.
(Zachary could not see it but, Eva had a smirk of triumph pasted on her face. She knew that she had won, once again.)
No matter how unpredictable Eva's mood has been, I always give in to her. I really want things to work out between us.
