⭐ Zachary's POV ⭐

My hands gave the steering wheel a right turn right after exiting the car park. This was our first lunch together after the incident last week.

I was the first one to break the ice. At first, she did not pick up my call. Eva claimed that she was too busy to answer any calls. Her reason was not very convincing though. She could text me if there was no time to make a call.

There was an awkwardness in our conversation. We ended the call within five minutes. After that, neither of us called each other.

I had been thinking of what to say to Eva. It would not do us any good if we do not rectify the problem. Obviously, we both had different views when it comes to children.

I was too deep into my thoughts that I did not notice the light turned green. The drivers behind me started to honk at me. I quickly drove the car away and effectively stopped the loud noises.

A tall black building with glass windows appeared in my line of sight. I could easily locate the car park after coming here countless of times.

I felt the car getting warmer and warmer after switching off the ignition. My legs brought me out before my body started to sweat. It was lunchtime and many people are rushing out of the building. There were a few familiar faces among the crowd of people. They were Eva's colleagues and I waved to them with a nod.

"Hi Amelia, you're not going out for lunch?" My question caught her by surprise as she did not expect me to be there.

"Oh, hey Zachary. Um, I'm just getting ready to head out. The door is unlocked, by the way." Amelia's lips lifted up into a small smile.

"Thanks."

The office was quite empty when I went in. I made my way to the stairs as Eva's office was at the second level. My gaze was diverted to the steps and that was the reason why I did not notice someone walking down the stairs.

"Ahhh!" A woman shrieked out as something hard was knocked onto my head.

Fortunately, I moved to my left just in time and witnessed a number of files rolled down the stairs. A breath of relief escaped my mouth as I wiped off imaginary sweat on my forehead. On the contrary, I heard the lady sucked in a breath.

It was when I took a good look at the person who caused the pain on my head. My mouth dropped open and I quickly snapped it shut.

Gulp.

"H-Hey Rachel. What a surprise." I have no idea why my voice came out as raspy and barely audible.

"Er, hi. Yeah, I'm really surprised." Rachel's voice was in a soft whisper as she walked past me. Rachel bent down to pick up the files. In an instant, I was at Rachel's side helping her.

"Thank you." There was an awkward smile on Rachel's face as she stood up.

Rachel's eyes widened when she saw something on my forehead. She pointed at it and quickly took a tissue out from her pocket.

Out of curiosity, I reached up to touch my forehead until I felt a sting. There was a dot of blood at the tip of my finger. No wonder it hurts when my hand touched it. Rachel pressed a piece of tissue into my palm when Eva suddenly took it away.

"What's this for?" Eva threw Rachel a look and waved the tissue in front of her.

"I.. I wasn't looking when I came down the stairs. At the same time, Zach was walking up the stairs. Then the files I was bringing down accidentally knocked onto him. I saw that his forehead is bleeding so I gave him a tissue to wipe it off." Rachel explained thoroughly and she was staring at the floor while doing so.

"Next time use your brains. I wonder why Mrs Wright even wants to hire you." Eva hissed as she made me look at her while she dabbed on my cut.

Rachel did not say anything and simply walked away. My eyes followed Rachel as she placed the set of files on a table.

"Hey! Are you even listening?"

I diverted my gaze back to a fuming Eva. She was glaring at me with fire in her eyes. Oh no.

Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Rachel walking towards us. Before she could go up to the second level, Eva stopped her.

"By the way, why are you referring to my boyfriend by his first name?"

Rachel visibly stiffened as she looked at us. I wanted to answer on Rachel's behalf but she already opened her mouth to speak.

"Well, that's because we were from the same high school," Rachel replied while looking straight into Eva's eyes.

"You both were just schoolmates? Nothing else?" Rachel definitely was not expecting that question. She started to twist the bracelet that I gave her years ago. I actually smiled because Rachel was still wearing that bracelet.

"Um... We were b-both in a r-relationship before." Rachel stammered as she answered and she somehow looked paler.

I nearly facepalm as Rachel was being too truthful. Eva could get very jealous and she might make her work life miserable.

"So you're his ex-girlfriend. I think it will be best that you pretend not to know him in the future. Oh and stay away from him." Eva spat out those words like it was poison.

On the other hand, Rachel was laughing as if Eva just joked with her. Eva folded her arms and her lips pursed into a straight line.

"I'm serious about what I said. Slutty ex-girlfriends like you, just won't leave Zachary alone."

"Look, I don't care about your jealousy right now. I am definitely not a slut and happily engaged to my wonderful fiancé, Gavin. Besides, have some confidence in Zach." Rachel's sardonic smile made me cringed a little.

Eva was not ready to back down in this heated argument and fire back a response.

"Call me Ms Stewart. Mr Davis for Zachary. Do you understand me?! You're just a lowly assistant, do and say what you are supposed to." Eva purposely flicked her hair which slapped Rachel right in the face.

"Hey Ms Stewart! An assistant is also a decent job! Don't look down on someone especially when you are also working for somebody else." Rachel huffed in anger and stomped off.

Eva narrowed her eyes and clenched her teeth together. Her feet moved forward and hands fisted in rage. I quickly stop Eva from going any further and pulled her out of the office.

"Why did you pull me out? Are you afraid that I will harm your ex-girlfriend?" Eva's tone was laced with sarcasm.

"What you did back there was unnecessary and rude."

"Excuse me?"

"I don't understand why you said those things to Rachel."

"I was just stating the facts."

I pinched the bridge of my nose as my head throbbed in pain.

"I don't want to argue with you. Let's go."

I went to press the elevator button, leaving Evangeline to glare at the back of my head. My temper was rising but I did not want to comment on Eva's actions anymore. This might cause even more trouble for Rachel. From their conversation, I assumed Rachel was working for Eva's boss instead of her.

The elevator dinged and disrupted my train of thoughts. I walked in to see Eva stood rooted to the ground. A sigh was about to escape my mouth, luckily, I stopped it in time.

"Are you coming in or not?" I tried my damn hardest to keep the irritation out of my tone.

Eva continued ignoring me and I have no choice but to close the elevator.

"Zachary Davis! Can't you just wait?!" Eva rushed forward and quickly pressed the elevator button.

The walk to my car was silent and the drive to the restaurant was even quieter. We were both mad with each other. Eva snapped at the innocent waitress who was taking our orders.

The rest of our lunch was predictably an unpleasant one.

Author's note :
Writer's block struck me again and again, which is super duper irritating. 😞 I'm constantly trying to improve as an author. As I was editing my first story(TGHITS) , there were so many errors. The readers are really kind to me for not pointing out my mistakes. Or maybe they don't even care hahaha. But, I really appreciate all the support. I'm really happy to see that people are still adding TGHITS into their reading list. 😊 Sorry for wasting your time reading this long A/N. 😛 Vote, comment or share the story, if you like it! ❤
