Songs of the Heart

"Okay, you're all going to hang out with your friends, and Clyde will watch Roger and the J's, right?" Lily asked her younger cousins.

"Affirmitive," Clyde replied as everyone else ran off. "You forgot to tell them about the concert."

"I didn't forget, they just left before I could say anything," Lily pointed out. "I just hope people do show up."

It was no secret that Lily was a huge fan of opera music. She doesn't sing, but she's seen every show. Unfortunately, hardly anyone else in Troll Village appreciated the art.

"They did all their homework, but they're still going to fail," Clyde pointed out. "It's not surprising, though. I was assigned to do research on my family tree, and Duckweeds are well known for their futility."

As Clyde left, Archer raised an eyebrow at Lily.

"He means they're stupid," Lily translated. "Clyde's the only exception, for some reason. We all thought he was weird, at first, but after third grade, he jumped all the way to high school, and now he's trying to find a way to use the moon as an antenna."

"That smart at the age of nine?" Archer asked. "That's impressive."

"Okay, back to business," said Lily. "Is everything gonna be ready by tonight?"

Archer nodded.

"The stage floor's waxed?"

"Yes."

"Lemon scented?"

"No."

"Anyone call in sick?"

"No."

"All the roses were delivered?"

"Yes, but we had to ask for white," Archer informed her. "I was told there's no such thing as blue roses."

"Ask Harper if she can paint them blue," Lily told her boyfriend, who was beginning to look nervous.

"I will," he replied, kissing her on the cheek. "I love you."

Lily just looked away shyly. "I'm gonna go make cupcakes."

"Guys, I'm a little worried about tonight," Archer confessed to Poppy and Branch. "Lily's so focused on saving the theater, and every time I tell her I love her, she runs off."

"Archer, Lily's just not used to being in love with someone," Branch said. "Just give her time to adjust."

"Well, that makes things awkward."

"What do you mean?" Poppy asked.

"I talked to her parents, and..." Archer hesitated. "... I was going to ask her to marry me tonight."

"Oh, Archer, good for you!" Poppy exclaimed, hugging him. "It feels like yesterday, you became a member of Troll Village, and now you're getting married!"

"It's actually been eight months, and he hasn't even asked her yet," Branch pointed out.

"Don't listen to Branch, Archer," Poppy said. "Tonight, you go straight to Lily, get down on one knee, show her that engagement ring tonight, and pour your heart and soul out to her!"

"I'll see what I can do," he replied, and left.

"Do you really think she'll say yes?" Branch asked the Troll queen.

"No."

"Okay, everyone, the tenors are ready," Lily announced. "Sopranos, what say you?"

"Why say when we can sing?!" Tug Deluth sang with some other Trolls.

"Altos, show me what you got," Lily said as the altos harmonized. "Nicely done. This isn't a rehearsal, so it has to be perfect."

"Hey, Lily? Aren't you going to sing something tonight?" Cybil asked. "I don't think anyone's ever heard you sing before."

Lily felt uncomfortable with this conversation and moved on.

"Shouldn't you be on curtain call?"

"Well, I go on after the introduction, which is you, so..."

"Fair enough," Lily replied and headed for the stage, only to find the stadium nearly empty. Only forty six Trolls showed up. Lily remained slightly positive and and spoke through a microphone. "Good evening, everyone."

"Hi, sweetie! We're up here!" Lily's mother shouted from the back of the auditorium.

"Hello, mother," Lily replied unenthusiastically and continued. "Tonight, we are celebrating the beauty of opera by showing five original songs and eight handpicked excerpts from what many consider the greatest shows of all time. I hope tonight, we can save this dying art. Without further ado, I proudly present, Euridice."

The crowd lightly applauded as Cybil and the rest of her troupe got onstage and performed. Archer, meanwhile, slowly approached Lily.

"Lil, can I talk to you for a second?" he asked.

"Make it quick, I need to refill the lemonade pitcher," Lily answered, making her way towards the concessions.

"Well, we've been together for quite a while, and it's been pretty great, so I've decided..."

"Lily, why does 'Orfeo' sound a little... ear-piercing?" Bella Brightly asked, covering her ears.

"I had Sky Toronto play him," Lily answered. "I wanted it sound like he was in pure agony."

"By agonizing the rest of us?!" she exclaimed. "Everyone's starting to leave!"

"Well, you got me there," Lily admitted. "Just move on to the next performance."

•••••••••••••••••••••••••

After three more songs, everyone left. Archer tried to stop them, but he slipped on some cupcake frosting and fell over.

"You okay, Archer?" Lily asked as Poppy and Branch helped him up.

"I'm alright, how are you doing?"

Lily sighed. "I thought I could do this. I'm not really a positive person, but I thought if I wanted it enough, I could do this."

"It's okay, Lily," Poppy consoled, patting her on the back. "You gave it your all, and that's what matters."

"I don't feel like I did, though," she muttered. "You guys go ahead, I'll clean up here."

"You sure you don't need any help?" Archer asked.

Lily nodded. "I'm sure."

"Come on, Lily, let him help you," Poppy urged, hoping Archer would propose to her.

"Poppy, I think she needs to be alone," Branch pointed out.

"Don't listen to--"

"He's right, actually," Lily interrupted. "Just... go."

With that, Poppy, Branch, and Archer left.

As Lily finished cleaning up the theater house, she found a velvety, dark blue ring box. She picked it up and inspected it.

"This would've drawn in a crowd," she mumbled. Trolls love it when someone proposes. Lily opened the box and found a familiar diamond cut inside. "Wait a minute... this was my mother's."

"Sorry, Lily, I think I lost a cufflink somewhere around..." Archer said as he came back, and noticed Lily holding the box. "I... guess you... found it... for me?"

"It doesn't match the pair you're already wearing," Lily replied sarcastically.

"Fair enough," he said, blushing. "So..."

"Why would you want to marry me?" Lily asked. "I'm not like other Trolls, and I'm nothing like the rest of your kind."

"I'll have you know not all of us are hillbillies," Archer pointed out. "And I think you're more like the rest of the Trolls than you think. You are kind, smart, talented..."

"My whole life, I never sang," she confessed. "I've tried to, but... I get so scared, nothing ever comes out."

"And that's okay," Archer assured her. "Being scared is normal. You just need to remember what scares you more, so you can do something about it."

Lily looked down in thought and slowly made her way on stage. As she stood in the center, she gazed at Archer loving, closed her eyes, and...

I'm trying to hold my breath

Let it stay this way

Can't let this moment end

You set off a dream in me

"Wow," Archer gasped as Lily sang in a melodic voice, that seemed to draw in a rather large crowd.

Getting louder now

Can you hear it echoing?

Take my hand

Will you share this with me?

'Cause darling, without you...

All the shine of a thousand spotlights

All the stars we steal from the night sky

Will never be enough

Never be enough

Towers of gold are still to little

These hands could hold the world, but it'll

Never be enough

Never be enough

At this point, the whole village was listening to Lily.

For me

Never, never, never, never, never

For me, for me

Never enough, never enough, never enough

For me, for me, for me...

As the clouds in the night sky parted, the moon shone onto Lily's skin, making it seem like she was glowing.

All the shine of a thousand spotlights

All the stars we steal from the night sky

Will never be enough

Never be enough

Towers of gold are still to little

These hands could hold the world, but it'll

Never be enough

Never be enough

For me

Never, never, never, never, never

For me, for me

Never enough, never, never

Never enough, never, never

Never enough

For me, for me, for me...

By the time Lily hit that last note, the whole audience was in tears.

For me

Lily gestured for Archer to go on stage with her. Once he got up there, she gave him the ring and held out her left hand. Smiling widely, he slipped it on her finger and kissed her lovingly. They either couldn't hear the audience cheering or they were just ignoring them.
