One Foot In Front Of the Other
"Do you realize that a month ago today you got back from shagging my sister in Japan," Ron said nudging Harry in the elbow as they set their food down on the table.
"Wonderful," Hermione said dryly as she put her half-eaten salad lid back on the container. "They were gone for two weeks. And now you make that joke, every single week." She sighed as Ron cackled evilly.
"You're not funny," Harry said pointing at him. "He's not funny."
"Oh quit your whining and eat your lunch," Ron said through a mouthful of potato salad.
"And since when are you okay with the idea of me shagging Ginny?" Harry asked bewildered.
"Hermione didn't let me leave the kitchen for seven hours while you two were gone." Ron shuddered. "She forced the idea of you two being married and happy into my head. And now, I can't stop!"
"Remind me why I agreed to been seen with you two at work," Hermione said picking at her nails.
"Why! Who wouldn't want to eat with the CHOSEN ONE! And his trusty sidekick Wheezy." Harry yelled causing a few people to give him a side glance.
"Sidekick my arse!" Ron said elbowing Harry in the ribs.
Elbowing him back Ron winced and slapped Harry on the arm.
"You two are no better than children." Hermione rolled her eyes as she leaned back in her chair. "And why does it seem like you're on drugs?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about." Harry gasped as he shook his head flabbergasted.
"He's weird," Ron whispered loudly to Hermione as he sipped his water.
"Kingsly should make you two wear helmets. Fucking safety hazards." Hermione muttered as she laughed at her own joke.
"What was that?" Harry asked clearing his throat as he blinked psychotically.
Then the metal table made a loud vibrating sound like one of the three phones in the middle of the table was ringing.
Harry and Ron both reached for theirs.
"Not me," Ron said putting it back down.
Harry shook his head and returned to his sandwich. Hermione sighed before flipping it open and holding it to her ear.
"Hello?" She said.
"Hermione!" Ginny gasped on the other line. "Are you at lunch?"
"Yeah, I have another twenty minutes. Why?"
"I need you to get over here." Then Ginny make a gagging sound that sounded like she was holding back vomit.
"Ginny are you alright?" Hermione asked concern growing in her voice.
Harry sat up and looked at Hermione with a question written on his face. Placing either his hands of either arm of his chair like he was ready to leave.
"Just hurry I need you."
"Do you want me to bring Harry, cause he's here to-"
"No!" Ginny snapped. "Sorry for yelling, I need you, and only you."
"Okay." Hermione nodded before disconnecting the line.
Then she shoved all her things in her handbag as she spewed out where she was going.
"Ginny needs help with something, she said she didn't want you there, sorry Harry, I'll be back soon. If it is bad I will call you." Hermione said before rushing towards the fireplaces and apperating to Ginny in a burst of green flames.
Harry and Ron looked at where Hermione disappeared. Her chair, then each other.
"What just happened?" Ron asked stunned.
"Part of me doesn't even want to know." Harry sighed.
The door was locked so Hermione reached up behind the 'Potters' sign above the door. Grabbing the key she unlocked the door and stepped in.
"Ginny?" She yelled looking around the first floor.
"UPSTAIRS!" She yelled back and Hermione ran up the steps and into Ginny's room.
"Ginny?" Hermione asked again looking around.
"I'm in the bathroom."
Hermione walked in and was hit with the strong smell of air freshener. Coughing she waved her hand through the air as she adjusted to the overwhelming scent.
"I puked, and I didn't want it to smell like vomit when you got here. I puked for like four minutes," Ginny whispered. She was sitting in the empty bathtub with a pillow clutched between her arms. She was rocking slightly.
"What's going on Gin?' Hermione asked kicking her heels off and climbing into the tub with her friend.
Ginny just stared at her friend and shook her head.
"Gin, Ginny," Hermione said taking her hands. "You can tell me."
"What if he leaves?" Ginny asked in a harsh whisper as her eyes grew wide and she stared at the wall over Hermione's shoulder.
"What if who leaves?" Hermione asked looking at Ginny confused.
"Harry," Ginny said with big doe eyes. She looked terrified.
"Ginny, Harry would a madman to leave you. And he would hear a thing or two from Ron and me as well." Hermione said with full confidence and gave Ginny a supporting smile.
"I'm pregnant. There is a child in my uterus," Ginny said her voice growing hard as her eyes focused on Hermione's. "A child." She enunciated.
"Oh shit," Hermione said her mouth opening slightly.
"The test is on the counter," Ginny confirmed solemnly.
"Ginny, why are you sad?" She said squeezing Ginny's shoulder.
"I'm twenty-one, twenty-two in a month. I just got married, and I'm pregnant." Ginny said listing off on her fingers.
"Do you want to keep it?" Hermione asked pulling her friend close and into a hug.
"Of course I want to keep it! I'm not taking life away. It's just a lot."Ginny whimpered looking down at her feet.
"Ginny," Hermione sighed. "Let's move out of the tub." Grabbing her hands Hermione helped Ginny up. Slowly they walked to the bed. She sat down on top of the plush comforter and let Hermione wrap the blanket from the end of the bed around her shoulders.
"Congratulations! Hermione gasped jumping up next to her smiling! "I get to be an aunt!" Hermione squealed.
Ginny gave a small grin.
"Oh for the love of Merlin!" Hermione gasped obnoxiously. "You can do better than that!"
"And I'm a Mum!"Ginny giggled waving her hands over-enthusiastically.
"I'm going to call, Harry. You need to talk to him about this." Hermione said taking a deep breath as she regained her composure.
Looking in the mirror she straightened her shirt and smoothed out her hair before Hermione stepped out of the room and pulled out her phone. Dailing Harry's number it only rang once before Harry's desperate voice filled her ear.
"What's happened?" He cried.
"Take the rest of the day off," Hermione instructed.
"What why?" Harry gasped concerned growing in his voice
"You need to talk to Ginny. Trust me on this on Harry." Hermione sighed pleading that he would agree.
"Hermione I can't take the whole day off because we need to 'talk'." Harry sounding slightly annoyed.
"Harry when I got here she was sitting in the tub. Fully clothed, in the tub, with a pillow." Hermione said rubbing her temples as Harry failed to let her get her point across.
"The bathtub, but you told me she hasn't done that-"
"Since Fred died. I know, will please just come home. You two have A LOT to talk about."
"I'll be there in a few minutes." Harry sighed.
Closing her phone Hermione went downstairs and put the kettle on. Pulling out a mug and tea she waited for Harry and for the water to boil. Once ready she brought the cup back up to Ginny and gave her a hug.
"Harry's gonna be here soon. I love you."
"Thanks, 'Mione," Ginny said squeezing her back.
"You sure you're okay?"
"I'll be good," Ginny assured her,
"Love you, Mum." Hermione winked before dramatically sashaying down the stairs.
"Love you too!" Ginny giggled.
Harry walked into the house and met Hermione on the stairs. "Hey." He smiled.
"Hi." Hermione smiled back as she continued to walk down.
"Wait! Hermione. She's not hurt is she?" Harry asked looking at her with a frightened look written in his features.
"You need to go talk to her. But no, she's not hurt." Hermione confirmed giving his hand a squeeze and small smile before leaving the house.
Harry sighed and ran his fingers through his hair before standing in the doorway and knocking on the frame.
"Hey, beautiful wife." He smiled walking in.
"Hi, Husband," Ginny said lightly patting the space on the bed in front of her.
Harry hopped up and brushed his lips against hers before leaning back and smiling at her gently.
"What's going on Ginny?" He asked gently resting his hand on her knee.
"You remember when Fluer and Bill told us that she was pregnant?" Ginny asked after she was silent for a moment.
"Ye- yeah. We were at dinner and it was right after I came back and we all started yelling and screaming, we were all freaking out a little bit." Harry said obviously confused about how this related to anything.
"But my Dad?" Ginny continued.
"Didn't he pass out?" Harry asked suddenly looking like he remembered.
"We thought he was sent into cardiac arrest." Ginny laughed lightly. "We thought Bill and Fleur killed him."
"Yeah, I do remember." Harry laughed along smiling.
"Okay, Harry, you have to promise me that you won't pass out."
"O-Okay," Harry said slightly taken aback.
Ginny took a deep breath before Harry stopped her.
"Wait, Ginny, you're not, -
"Harry, I'm pregnant. We're having a baby." Ginny said looking at him and biting her lip nervously.
He stared blankly. "A- a baby." He stuttered looking at her.
"Yes."
"A baby!" He said sounding excited. "You're serious?"
"Yes," Ginny said in a half-laugh half sigh.
"Ginny, we're going to be parents." Harry laughed placing his hand over Ginny's stomach. "We're going to have a little baby!" He laughed and lifted Ginny in the air spinning her around once before setting her down.
"Oh my God. I'm going to be Dad." Harry said slowing down at looking at Ginny. "I need to sit down." He said feeling for the edge of the bed and plopping down.
"Harry? Are you alright?" Ginny asked him. "You're having a worse reaction then I did and that's not good."
"Ginny, I flew a car into the whomping willow when I was twelve!" Harry gasped.
"Okay, well that's not terrible you also fought a dragon-"
"We broke into the Ministry!"
"Well you thought-"
"I don't even want to know how many house points I lost through the years," Harry said he was pacing now. "If our child is anything like me- oh, they're going to die before they turn thirteen!"
"Harry!" Ginny shouted. "Calm down. everything is going to be okay. Relax. We're doing this together." Lacing her fingers through his Ginny kissed Harry's hand and placed a kiss on his cheek and laying back on the bed.
Harry ran his fingers through Ginny's hair and touched noses with her. She giggled and hooked her arms around his neck. Laying on his forearms above her Harry look at her in the eyes and smiled. The biggest most genuine smile she had ever seen.
Then without warning, he kissed her passionately. Pushing his lips against hers. It started out gentle and melted into something much sweeter and full of tenderness. A family of two had grown to a family of three. And that's when most passionate kiss number three happened.
((()))((()))((()))
Hermione arrived back at the ministry to find a very confused looking Ron sitting at the table next to Harry's abandoned lunch and his empty bowl.
Hermione walked over to him placed a kiss on his cheek.
"Hey, babe." She mumbled smiling at him.
"Light of my life." Ron sighed affectionately. "What's going on with Ginny?" He asked shifting in his seat to face Hermione who had sat back down.
"On a scale of one to ten, how upset would you be discovering, that Ginny's pregnant?" Hermione asked grimacing as she waited for him to answer.
"Well, normally it would be like a forty-two, but, I know this is a joke." Ron started matter o factly. "You see, for Ginny to be pregnant, she and Harry would have to be shagging. I know we joke about it and all think it's really funny. But, they don't do that." Ron finished with the most confidence Hermione has ever seen him with.
"Oh, Ron." Hermione sighed. "You're in denial."
"I most certainly am not!" Ron defended, his ears getting red.
"Ron," Hermione sighed taking his hand. "We shag. A lot."
"Well, that's different your my girlfriend," Ron said simply.
"Ginny is Harry's wife. They basically promised each other to shag only each other. For the rest of time."
Ron stood up suddenly grabbing his bag. "Come with me."
Hermione stood up and stumbled in her step. "Where are we going?"
"It's a surprise," Ron answered leading them outside.
Hermione was extremely confused as they walked the blocks of London. "Ron where are we going. We have work you know!"
"Work, smurk." Ron laughed as he put his arms over her shoulders. "We're Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The ministry worships the ground we walk on."
Just then Ron tripped on a lip of the concrete and dove headfirst into some shop's shrubbery.
"Oh my God, Ron!" Hermione gasped helping him stand. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah," He answered brushed the leaves from his hair. "I'm great.
Then continued on until King's Cross Station came into view. Hermione peered at her boyfriend in absolute bewilderment. "What are we doing here?"
"I keep telling you it's a surprise," Ron answered with a cheeky grin.
"Will the barrier even be open?" Hermione questioned. "Isn't it a risk to keep it open all year. With the chances of muggles discovering it."
"I'm pretty sure muggles can't go through the barrier to the platform." Ron shrugged. "But I guess we'll find out if they seal the barrier or not."
Walking into the station very few people were milling about. There were chiming and the rushing of trains but the station itself was fairly deserted.
"I reckon we shouldn't run at it," Ron said as they stood linked together by their hands in front of a seemingly ordinary brick wall.
"That was a given."Hermione nodded. "I supposed we just walk and if we bounce off we just say we weren't watching where we were going."
Ron nodded and they began to walk. As they grew closer both squeezed their eyes shut and grimaced as they braced for contact with cold stone. But it never came. There was a slight hissing of hair and all the sounds from the station faded away.
Hermione opened her eyes to see a deserted Platform 9 3/4. She was used to seeing it filled with people and steam clouding the air. The scarlet steam engine stood empty on the tracks.
"Okay," Ron said as he stepped onto the tracks. "This is where things go fuzzy, because Percy tried to help me with the math, but, I'm not sure."
Hermione stepped down after him warily. "I'm still very confused."
"Just hold my hand," Ron instructed. Then they apparated. They reappeared still on the train tracks but in the middle of a field. The outskirts of some town were barely visible along the horizon. "So one of the slats should be painted white. Somewhere near here."
Hermione nodded and began searching. "Is that it?' She asked pointing a few meters away.
"Yeah," Ron sighed. He then grabbed Hermione's hand and walked over to the slat. The paint was chipped but still very white.
Ron turned to face Hermione. "Hermione-"
"Wait," Hermione cut him off. "You've got dirt on your nose. Here let me get it." She licked her thumb and brought close Ron's face, but he ducked out of the way.
"No! Don't! It's for luck." Ron said hurriedly.
"For luck?" Hermione questioned perplexed.
"Yeah, well, this is stupid, but do you remember where we met?"
"On the train?" Hermione asked. Her mouth then fell open as she looked around her. "This is where we met."
"Yeah," Ron nodded, his cheeks were flushed. "Well anyway, the day we met I had dirt on my nose."
Hermione let out a melodic laugh. "Oh, Ron don't be embarrassed. This is so sweet. But, what do you need luck for?"
Ron didn't answer her. Instead, he knelt down on one knee. "For this."
Hermione was frozen in place. The only words she was able to mutter were, "Holy Cricket."
Ron took bother of Hermione's hands into his own. "Hermione Jean Granger, I'm not a man of many words so I'm just going to cut to the chase. I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you. So, will you marry me?"
"Hold on," Hermione said as she examined every inch of the landscape around her. She was looking up the sky when she spoke.
"Yes."
"Did- did you just say yes?" Ron asked astoundment tainting his voice. He too was looking up trying to figure out what Hermione was looking at.
"Of course!" Hermione gasped looking back down.
"What am I looking at?" Ron questioned still looking up.
"I wanted to make sure that I never forget a single thing about this train track in the middle of nowhere. Because it's where I decided to marry my soulmate." Hermione sighed looking at Ron with a twinkle in her eye.
"Oh wait I have something!" Ron gasped reaching down a grabbing his bag. Pulling out a white satin box he opened it and stood up holding it out to Hermione. Tears began to well in her eyes as she looked down at the ring.
"It's beautiful." She gasped. It was a thin rose gold band with diamonds lined all the way around. Then there was a small infinity symbol wrapped around the top. Lost in the beauty of the box she began to slip on the ring.
Sighing Ron launched into a short story. "Remember, when we found out Ginny was friends with the ferret- I mean Malfoy- I mean Draco? Rember when we found she was friends with him?" Ron asked flustered from calling him the wrong names.
"Yeah. You all freaked out and she ran away." Hermione giving him a what-does-this-have-to-do-with-anything look.
"Well, two days after that happened, I went out a bought this. That's when I decided to marry you." Ron looked at her sheepishly and Hermione just smiled widely.
"It's perfect." She beamed.
"The ring?" Ron asked, waiting for validation.
"Everything," Hermione confirmed.
"I've had this planned for months," Ron admitted. "I was waiting for the right day, but I couldn't wait any longer."
Slipping the ring onto her finger her mouth drew into a frown. "Your poor mother."
"I'm sorry, my Mum?" Ron asked raising his eyebrows.
"Well, Ginny's pregnant, and we're getting married. We have dinner with my parents tomorrow night and then we're at yours in four days. We're going to make your Mum faint." Hermione explained as she began to toy with her ring.
"Weasley women are tough. She'll recover." Ron shrugged. "Besides, it's a small price to pay to know, that I can marry you."
