2 - The Quarry
After Charlie had woken up, she decided to wear her nice black underwear and bra set. She liked the way it complimented her pale skin (even though it really didn't.) Over that, she wore a t-shirt tucked into capris. With that, she wore her converse.
Charlie charged outside straight to her bike. She gripped the handles to her rusted Schwinn and rode off to the Quarry. She stood on her pedals, riding faster than the wind. When Charlie saw someone pedaling behind, she slowed just in case it was someone she knew.
"Yuh-y-you pedal p-p-pretty fuh-fast." Bill stuttered from close behind.
"I can go faster." Charlie edged a grin on her face and glanced toward the older boy. "Want to have a race, Denbrough?"
"S-s-sure." You both paused on the sidewalk. "Wuh-where to, Hudson?"
"I have to go to Bev's house. We can race down Broadway?"
"O-okay." He smiled slightly.
"Go!" You both stood on your pedals, racing down West Broadway street.
"HI YO SILVER, AWAYY!!" Bill yelled before pushing out in front of Charlie.
Of course she wasn't going to let him have the title that easy. She pushed herself even faster and happened to push ahead by a few inches. He pushed significantly faster and zoomed ahead, ending the West Broadway Street Race. You both pulled over by the stop sign at the intersection where West Broadway meets Main street, laughing. From there, it would be a straight shot down Main and then a left onto Canal Street to Bev's apartment.
"Not too bad, Denbrough." Charlie smiled. She was slightly panting.
"Not tuh-t-t-too bad yuh-yourself, H-Hudson."
"I better get to Bev's." They both smiled to each other before parting ways. "Good race."
Bill continued in the opposite direction on a bike far too large for him; a bike called Silver.
"HI YO SILVERRR, AWAYYY!!" He shouted as he plunged down Neibolt street, passing the Neibolt house. Charlie giggled lightly to herself as she made her way to Beverly's apartment.
"We need to go." Charlie said to Bev as she grabbed her bag and her bike. She flung her bag on her shoulders and mounted her bike, despite the fact she was wearing a dress. They both had a race all the way there, Charlie won this time.
When they got there, they watched in humor as the boys fought over which spitball was the best.
"Oh my god! That was terrible, I win!" Richie claimed. Then they started arguing about loogies.
"What?! Did you see that loogie?" Eddie argued.
"What? Are you kidding me! Mine went the farthest!" Richie started using his arms in the argument, ignoring everyone that was watching.
"It's mass! It's always been mass!?" Eddie started gesturing back.
"What the-what is mass?!"
"Who cares about how far it goes? It's matters about how big it is, if it's green or it has juicy fat-"
"Gross." Charlie whispered almost inaudibly heard.
"I know." Bev agreed.
"So huh-who's going f-f-f-first?" Bill broke the argument.
Just then, Beverly gripped Charlie's arm, "Let's show 'em."
"We'll go!" Charlie hollered so they could hear. They glanced back and watched the two young girls undress to their undergarments.
They both ran at the same time, Charlie leading a bit. Just before they jumped off, both of them said "sissies." They grinned before they hit the cold water. It actually felt great to Charlie. It felt good for her to finally hide all the bruises underwater.
One at a time, the rest of the younglings jumped in. Next was Bill, Richie, Ben, Eddie and last - but certainly not least - Stanley. They all splashed around at each other.
"Let's play chicken!" Richie called.
It was Beverly and Bill vs Charlie and Eddie. Both Charlie and Eddie were relatively small for their age and they both weighed like nothing, so it really wasn't an issue who got to be on whose shoulders. Eddie decided to be a gentleman and allow Charlie to be on his.
"Get ready to lose Beverly Marsh!" Charlie chanted as she began hurtling her upper body strength toward Bev. For the most part, their physical strength were pretty matched. But when it came to balance, Beverly got the high end. "SHIT!" Beverly managed to give a gentle shove which flung both her and Eddie backward into the water. "Shit Kaspbrak, I just lost." Charlie said apologetically while wiping the water from her eyes.
"That's ok." His small voice said as a blush crept on him.
"Guys look at this!" Richie pointed out. "Wheezie's got a crush!"
Richie laughed as Eddie threw splashes his way. A little blush made its way onto Charlie's cheeks as well, but she didn't let it show. Richie fell silent as the two locked eyes.
"Come on, Rich! It's not like you haven't been making googly eyes at her!" Beverly claimed which totally threw Richie in for a spin.
"I HAVE NOT!"
Both Beverly and Charlie shrugged it off and make their way to the bank of the Quarry. Beverly lay sunbathing as most of the group watched her. Bust a Move by MC was echoing in the background. Charlie sat with her t-shirt on and back against a tree smoking a cigarette she stole from Beverly's pack. Charlie didn't know that she had one pair of eyes on her this whole time. When Bev turned her gaze to the boys, they all awkwardly looked away, even Eddie darted his eyes away from Charlie that was staring off into the water. Eddie looked away because he was afraid of the confrontation he might've gotten again from Rich and went to go sit down next to him.
"New's flash Ben, school's out for summah!" Richie quickly snapped Charlie from her focus and back on the group. She moved to a better position next to Eddie on the far end so she could see what he was talking about. Richie flashed and glare, then shuffled through Ben's bag. Eddie stared at her for a second, then shot his eyes back to Richie.
"Oh . . . that's not school stuff." Ben said shyly.
Richie started lugging around Ben's bag. Ben didn't seem to care until Rich grabbed a postcard from the bag and started reading it.
"Who sent you this?" Richie started laughing, but just before he could read a word, Ben snatched it out of his hands.
"No one!"
Richie took out another folder that looked to be somewhat important and interesting. "What's with the history project?"
"Oh. Well, when I first moved here," Ben started, "I didn't really have anyone to hang out with, so I just started spending time in the library."
"You went to the library?" Richie looked at been in utter disbelief. "On purpose?"
"I wanna see." Charlie said, reaching out her hand.
"So do I." Beverly stated before sitting next to Bill.
With the cigarette continuing to burn in Charlie's right hand, she continued to hold the folder one handed with her left hand. Eddie just watched in admiration. She looked over every detail.
"Interesting." Charlie passed it over Eddie and to Bill which held it between him and Bev. Charlie took another puff of her cigarette. At this point, the butt was halfway burnt. Charlie flicked the ash off the cigarette while now Eddie, Stanley and Richie were watching in the same admiration Eddie had. "What?" The boys snapped their heads back to Ben and Bill, hoping for more information.
"What's the blackspot?" Stanley asked out of curiosity.
"The Black Spot was a nightclub that was burned down by a racist cult."
"The what?" Charlie asked.
"Haven't you ever watched Geraldo?" Eddie asked her. Charlie shook her head.
"Y-y-y-y-yuh-your hair..." Bill said to Beverly.
"Your hair looks beautiful." Ben cut in. "Beverly."
"Oh. Yeah. Thanks." Charlie could tell that Beverly wanted to hear the compliment from Bill rather than Ben.
"Why's it all murders and missing kids?" Stanley asked from the other side of Charlie.
"Derry's not like any other town I've ever been in before." Ben started. "I did a study once.. It turns out, people die or disappear six times the national average."
"You read that?" Charlie said in distrust.
"That's just grown-ups." Ben looked at her, supporting his claim. "Kids are worse. Way-way worse." A silence had befallen the group of kids that only lasted a few seconds. "I've got more stuff, if you want to see it?"
Eddie shook his head, just wanting to leave or go play more games. Not look at missing person's incidents.
