Leaving

(TW: Moving, Repressed emotions, crying)

Logan's bedroom was completely empty.  It was very surreal.  Even though he had known that he would be moving for five months, it hadn't really hit him until the moment he saw his empty room.  His dad had told him to 'take a minute' before coming out to the car.  They would be leaving for the airport after Logan was ready to leave.

Walking through the mostly barren house made Logan feel as empty as his home.  He had thought he would spend the rest of his high school career in the house from his childhood.  Leaving it behind felt like the end of an era.  It was an era that he didn't want to end.

"Coming, Logie Bear?"  Logan's dad called from outside.

"I'm coming."  He shouted back.  Taking one last breath of happiness, Logan walked out to his dad's car.  Mr. Barry smiled and started driving to the airport.  Logan stared out his window, letting himself go entirely absentminded.  The only thing he could sense was the numbness throughout his body.

"The new house is a lot bigger.  You'll have more space for your astronomy books."  Logan's dad said as an attempt to start a conversation.

"Lovely."  was all Logan said.

It took exactly two hours, fifteen minutes, and forty-five seconds for Logan to unpack.  His books were stacked neatly on his desk, which took about forty minutes to re-assemble.  He had hung up some astronomy and anatomy posters, and made his bed with his constellation chart blanket.

"Satisfactory."

Logan spent the rest of that day in his room staring at the wall, just thinking.

"I will be attending the local public high school starting on Monday.  That gives me one day between now and my first day at the new school.  In that one day I need to acquire all of the supplies I will need for my classes, and I should go ahead and look into after-school organizations."

While Logan spiraled deeper and deeper into preparing himself for the future, he didn't even notice the creaking sounds from the ceiling above his new room.

The rest of Logan's day was spent planning out what he would be doing the next day. He made an itinerary outlining every single thing he would be doing on Sunday in chronological order. By the time Logan couldn't think of anything else he could possibly plan out, it was 6:00.

"Thank God." Logan sighed. Now that the sun was at least setting, it was a reasonable time to go to sleep. That was the only thing that appealed to him other than planning.

His first instinct was to change into his bear onesie. After changing onto his onesie, Logan caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. The sight of himself in that onesie yanked at Logan's heartstrings. He felt a lump rising up in his throat. He hadn't expected to feel anything just from wearing the onesie his....

Never-mind. It's not important.

Logan promptly changed out of the onesie, swapping it out for a baggy Ravenclaw t-shirt and a pair of clean gray boxers. He stuffed the bear onesie in the very back of his closet.

Crawling under his blanket, Logan settled himself laying on his back. He had learned that sleeping on your back is the best sleeping position to avoid tenseness. With all that was going on, he wanted to be as 'un-tense' as possible.

Logan closed his eyes and tried his hardest to fall asleep. It was proving to be a lot harder than he had expected. All the time he spent on planning and unpacking, keeping his mind busy, had prevented him from taking the time to gr-... process. His eyes were watering and a single tear rolled down his cheek.

"No... stop it." Logan scolded himself as he wiped his eyes. "I don't.. I don't want to feel."

But he still did. He felt so many different things that it felt like he was going to burst into a thousand pieces. Logan didn't like feeling things anymore. What good did it do? All it seemed to do was cause him more pain and trouble.

Logan turned over and buried his face in his pillow. As hard as he tried, he couldn't stop the steady flow of tears leaking from his eyes. His body trembled with every fresh waves of tears. The lump in his throat felt like it was going to shatter his vocal chords. The feeling was definitely not pleasant.

A few minutes into this, Logan heard someone open and close his bedroom door. He assumed it was his dad.

"I don't want to talk." Logan muttered, not lifting his face from the pillow. He felt his dad sit on the bed and place his hand on his back. Logan didn't want any kind of physical touch, but he didn't have any the energy to move.

Mr. Barry started to rub Logan's back up and down, trying his best to comfort him. For some reason, this made Logan feel a little better. His dad continued, rubbing his thumb in circles up and down his spine.

It wasn't long before Logan fell asleep.

The next morning, Logan found himself tangled up in a mess of sheets and blankets. He had apparently slept better than he thought. After untangling himself, he got out of bed and changed into his usual attire: dark navy jeans and a t-shirt of some kind. Today's t-shirt was plain white with the NASA logo on it.

Mr. Barry was already in the kitchen scrambling eggs. Logan didn't realize how hungry he was until he smelled the food in the kitchen.

"Good morning." Logan said, getting a plate from one of the many boxes piled up in the kitchen.

"Mornin, Logie Bear." his dad replied in a very chipper mood. Hearing that nickname made Logan's heart lurch the same way seeing himself in that onesie did.

"Could you call me by my name? If you don't mind."

"Oh. Sure thing.. Logan."

"Thanks." Logan said as his dad scraped some eggs onto his plate. They are in silence, neither of them sure what they should say. Logan finally broke the silence by going through his itinerary.

"Sounds like you've got a busy day ahead of you."

"I do." Logan said plainly, taking his plate to the sink. "I'm planning on going by a dollar store for new school supplies first."

"Do you want a ride?"

"I'll walk."

"Are you sure? The nearest dollar store is probably a twenty minute walk from here. I'd hate for you to-."

"I said I'll walk." Logan said, a little more emotionally charged than he meant to. There was a moment where Logan and his dad just looked at each other. Then Logan grabbed his wallet off the table and walked to the door. "Call if you need me."

Logan stepped out of the house before his father could respond. As he started the walk to the dollar store, Logan let himself get lost in thought.

"I need a binder for AP Literacy, a spiral notebook for American History, two composition notebooks for AP Statistics, and another binder for Honors Chemistry. That'll come to about seven dollars after tax..."

Logan's mind spiraled again as he walked down the side of the road. Florida was much warmer than Logan was used to. He might also have to invest in some shorts.
