Chapter 18: Breathe
Mathea's eyes open slowly, and I watch as her body stiffens. She looks straight at me, but I'm not sure if this is because she is glad to see my face or she is trying to avoid looking at Maka's body.
She then closes her eyes once again and seemingly takes a deep breath before, as if someone is prying her eyes open, allowing herself to take in the sight of Maka. I run to my sister once her body begins shaking, pushing past my teammates ahead of me.
"Mathea...Mathea, you need to breath." She slumps to the ground, falling onto her knees which forces me to get on my knees to be able to hold her up by her shoulders.
"Breath, Mathea." I repeat my instructions, but Mathea doesn't seem to be listening. It doesn't seem like she can hear me.
I begin to shake my sister by the shoulders when I notice her breathing has become unstable. I then turn to my teammates for help, but all of them, even the driver who was previously seated in the vehicle, are crowded around Maka.
Mathea's body begins to tilt to the left, but I lift it up as soon as it does so. "It's okay, T. Everything's okay. Do you hear me? It's okay."
"Willow?"
"Yes, Mathea, it's me. Everything's okay now."
Mathea seems to calm down as I speak, but her eyes begin to shut, making me wonder if it is a good thing that's she's calming down. Again, Mathea's body begins to tilt, and this time, I don't try to hold her up. I guide her to the ground as she stretches out her legs and rests on the side of her body.
I stand up, turning away from my sister and towards my teammates. It seems rude to interrupt any of them as they surround Maka; one of them only stares at Maka, the other cries, and another person whispers words into Maka's ear.
It seems rude to interrupt them, but there's more at stake than just Mathea's wellbeing. If we don't leave now, we may have trouble with any Purus members who could have followed her here.
I turn back in the direction of Mathea, panicking when I hear the sound of a branch being stepped on, but I begin to relax when I see Saint approach us. He, too, is covered in dirt, and I believe he is limping. I quickly walk towards him, taking a path a little to the left of Mathea when doing so and stepping over the footprint that doesn't match Mathea's.
Everyone must have been so caught up with Mathea and Maka that they never saw him slip away. As I near Saint, looking to the ground as discretely as I can, I don't notice any other footsteps.
"Did you know?" Saint stares at me with a blank expression.
"Did I know what?"
"Mathea's having a little problem up here. She forgot who I was." Saint uses one of his fingers to point to his head. "Don't worry; I don't think it's the same as your wilding out...well, she did kick me."
I try to act calm and oblivious, unsure of whether or not it is best to be honest with Saint. I can't help worrying about what he'll think if he knew I've been keeping such a secret from him. Perhaps he'll understand. I didn't have much of a choice; I wasn't sure Aris would continue with this plan if he knew Mathea's struggling with her memory. I don't think many people would continue with such a risky plan if they knew Mathea's information may not be reliable.
"You knew," Saint says, and I mentally curse myself for getting lost in my thoughts as he studied me. "It doesn't matter now. I won't tell anyone."
Saint then moves past me, walking towards Mathea and standing over her body. I follow his lead, and quickly move to stand in front of my sister when I see Shae, a lady with a thicker figure who just pulled her mask off, aim her gun at Mathea.
"Maka was everything to me," Shae says, her words as soft as a whisper.
I believe her words. During the drive here, the car was filled with their laughter, and I could see the love in both of their eyes; the love they had for each other.
However, I cannot let Shae avenge Maka, but my wants won't matter if I can't find a way to get Shae to drop her gun. I don't make any movements, fearful that Shae will shoot if I do so, and no one else makes any movements to stop her.
Suddenly, I feel an arm brush past me, and I tilt my head to watch as Saint moves in front of me. Shae doesn't lower her gun, but her hands begin to tremble.
"Put down the gun, Shae." Saint moves closer to Shae, his body still in the front of Mathea and me. "We need to leave. The Purus can show up anytime now."
"She shot Maka!"
My body stiffens as Shae raises her voice, and I can only hope that no Purus members around.
Saint, looking both angry and disgusted, turns to look at me. "You shot Maka?"
"Mathea...Mathea shot Maka." Despite the urge I feel to look away, I stare into Saint's eyes, and he eventually turns back to face Shae.
"Shae, we need to leave." Saint now has his hands over Shae's, and he slowly lowers the gun. Shae allows him to do so, looking straight at me as her eyes fill with tears.
Saint takes the gun away from Shae then moves toward the rest of the team. I then bend down to lift Mathea from the ground.
"Grab the body," I hear Saint say, but I avoid looking at Shae as I carry my sister to the car.
"I'm sorry." I look down at Mathea when I feel tears on my hand. "I'm so sorry, Willow. Please tell her I'm sorry. I'm—"
"Shhh. It's alright, T." I smile at my sister, lowering my head so my mouth is right next to her ear, ensuring she is the only one that hears my words. "You didn't shoot her. I'll explain later."
I then raise my head and continue walking toward the car. "Now get some rest."
