8. Melting
Nishinoya read over the note on his table, halfway hungover from the night before still. He knew he was a little tired but he also knew Asahi would want to see the sweet note left on the table. He walked back to Asahi's room, climbing into his bed.
Asahi turned over, wrapping Nishinoya in his arms. "Mm..."
Nishinoya laughed. "Morning."
"Not yet, not yet."
"Yes, now. Aone left you a sweet note." Nishinoya turned on the light attached to the bed that Asahi typically used for reading. Asahi groaned. "Shhh, shhhh. Listen. 'Thank you for being with me tonight. My number is listed below for Nishinoya to have in case he needs anything either. I'm looking forward to having a drink with you again sometime soon.' Dude how nice!"
Asahi's eyes opened a bit. "I got drunk."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah I don't remember coming home last night. Shit."
Nishinoya laughed. "Shit faced?"
"Very. I think I controlled myself." Asahi sat up. " I need a shower, my head is killing me right now."
Nishinoya laid on his back, tucking himself into Asahi's bed. "You have fun. I'm taking a nap right here."
Asahi shook his head and grabbed his clothes, going to the bathroom. He put his phone on the counter before turning on the water, wincing at the sound. He turned on his phone and saw that Aone had posted this morning. He smiled as he scrolled through the pictures and stopped on one, taking a deep breath. He glanced at the description before looking at the picture.
'Happy New Year's to everyone. May all enjoy this new year and enjoy their memories of the last.'
Asahi looked back at the picture of him sitting in the room at the restaurant with his hair down, smiling at the fireworks outside.
"Hey Noya!"
"What?!"
"Go look at his Instagram!"
There was silence for a moment before Nishinoya screamed and ran into the bathroom. "No fucking way! You are so lucky!"
Asahi grinned. "He posted me."
"You look so cute too! God that's awesome!"
"Cute?" Asahi paused. "Oh no. Oh shit. What if I thought I felt cute and tried to hit on him?! Noya?!"
Nishinoya laughed nervously. Asahi in the past had been overly touchy when he was drunk. Flirty, even.
"Fuck."
"Wow."
Asahi grabbed his phone and called Aone, fidgeting.
"Asahi, hello."
"Hi! Hi. Sorry. Um. Did I flirt with you last night? Sometimes when I drink I get touchy and sometimes I try to um- flirt? I guess that's what you would call it."
Aone was quiet for a moment. "No."
"No?"
"No."
"Okay thank God-"
"But you did lean on me a lot and it made it very difficult to walk."
"Sorry. I wasn't in the right state of mind-"
"It's okay. Please don't panic. I really enjoyed my night with you."
Asahi smiled to himself, glancing at Nishinoya's worried stare.
"Are you showering right now? I hear water running."
"Oh! No! I was about to and I saw your post and needed to make sure! Sorry!" Asahi turned off the water. "I saw your note by the way. That's very nice of you to give Noya your number. Also it would be great to go get drinks with you again- as long as I don't go past my limit."
"When is a good time for you?"
"Anytime this week actually. Maybe Thursday? I work in the morning on that day so we can hang out that night."
There was shuffling on the other side of the call and Asahi heard Aone sigh. "I have an appointment that afternoon. I'm not sure how long it'll take."
"Oh is it for your leg?"
Nishinoya burst into laughter. "Oh my god!"
"Yes actually. I'm going to be fitted for a new prosthetic."
"Oh no problem. What about Wednesday?"
"That sounds good. I do need to get back to what I was doing now if you don't mind."
"Oh! Yep! Got it! Bye!" Asahi hung up and looked at Nishinoya. "I didn't flirt with him!"
"Awesome! I'm sleeping in your bed for a sec." He walked out and Asahi returned to taking his shower.
****
One thing Asahi knew for tonight was that he could not drink as much as he had before. He didn't need to make a fool of himself again at all. And this time maybe he'd dress a bit better and hopefully would be okay with his choice of clothing when he was still tipsy.
This time they would be meeting at a bar and then would go their separate ways. Talking and drinking just like coworkers.
Asahi sighed, staring at the black button up he was holding. Drinking and talking, not a funeral. What was he thinking? Maybe he just needed to wear something actually fitting for him. His favorite coat and a nice shirt. He picked up both and touched his hair, contemplating putting it up.
Asahi laughed. "Hey Noya!"
"What?!" Asahi walked over to Nishinoya in the living room. Nishinoya grinned. "Well hello there."
"Hair up or down?"
"Is that even a question? Dude leave it down, he's gonna want to bend you over a barstool and fuck you sensless looking like that."
Asahi gaped, blushing. "I wasn't going for sex appeal."
"Oh please you don't have to try. You know that." Nishinoya went back to his phone.
"Noya..." Asahi smiled. "Are you calling me pretty?"
"Duh."
"Hair down then." Asahi checked the time. "I should get going."
"Have fun. There's condoms in your bag."
Asahi rolled his eyes and grabbed his bag. "I'll be home in a few hours."
He closed the door behind him and walked down the street, heading to the parking lot for his car. When he finally arrived at the bar thirty minutes later he saw Aone in his own car, rummaging around in his bag. He saw him take out his phone and panicked, thinking he was going to call him and got out, walking to the door. His phone started buzzing and he pulled it out, pressing it to his ear.
"Hello."
"Hello Asahi. I'm in the parking lot at the moment."
"I'm walking in now, I'll wait by the door for you."
"Alright." Aone hung up and Asahi waited by the door, fiddling with his phone case. Aone walked up and Asahi nearly blushed at the way Aone's eyes went over him. His emotions really showed through his eyes rather than his whole face. "You look nice."
"Thank you. You do too," Asahi said. He smiled, internally cringing that Aone was wearing a black button up. He looked good but his previous thought was not looking good now.
"Would you like to sit at the bar?"
"Sure, that's fine with me."
Aone opened the door and Asahi walked in. It felt really odd having his hair down but Aone really seemed to like it so he was okay with it for now.
Asahi found seats away from the door and sat down, Aone close to him.
The bartender walked over before he even got the chance to start a conversation. "Hello! What can I do for you two tonight?"
Asahi faltered. Aone spoke up. "May I have a highball?"
"Of course! And for you?" The bartender turned to Asahi.
"The same for me, please," he sheepishly answered.
The bartender smiled. "Will these be on separate tabs?"
"It will be one mine," Aone answered. He handed over his card and Asahi's eyes widened.
"I can pay for my own."
"I know. I'd enjoy if you didn't though." Aone turned to Asahi. He stared at him, the silence a bit unnerving. This is what the teachers talked about but to Asahi, this wasn't too bad.
"Thank you. I'll repay you. Um... how have you been?"
"I have been doing well. Have you been well?"
"For the most part. Button doesn't like her regular food anymore so that sucks. But overall I'm okay."
Aone accepted his card back from the bartender and handed Asahi his drink. "Why is that?"
"Her food?"
"Yes."
"She's just old. Her tastes change a lot." Asahi smiled and sipped at his drink. "Do you have any pets? You don't really talk about yourself a lot."
"I do not."
"What about when you were little?"
"My mother was severely allergic to cats and my father had an aversion to animals."
"Oh I'm sorry."
Aone shifted his leg, adjusting the amount of pressure on it. "You apologize a lot."
Warmth spread in Asahi's face. "Yeah, I do. Got that one from my mom."
"Why is that?"
"Not sure." Asahi took another sip of his drink, glancing at the women eyeing him. He tucked his hair behind his head. The judgemental stares from others always sucked a lot but he tried his best to ignore them. Every day he got them and everyday he struggled with his self image because of it. His hair was his favorite part of himself and everyone tried to ruin it for him.
Aone looked back in curiosity and furrowed his pale brows. He turned back to Asahi. "They are just people, you don't know them."
"I know that. But I look way too feminine with long hair. I love having long hair but then people see me and it's like 'oh wow crossdresser'. I'm not. I really just like the comfort of it."
Aone took a long drink before leaning closer and moving Asahi's hair forward again. "Your hair is very beautiful."
Yet again Asahi's heart fluttered and his mouth turned up in a smile. "Thank you."
"Ah did you not take any medicine before coming? Your face is red."
"I did. I just- it must've been the cold. The cold can make my face red." He smiled again, this time nervously chuckling. "So anyways. Why do you keep yours so short?"
"Because it is low maintenance."
Asahi laughed. They kept talking for about a half an hour before he got the courage to ask for a second drink, not wanting to get drunk or raise the tab too high. Aone said it was okay with him if he just didn't get drunk. He was only drinking one drink so he didn't mind watching Asahi drink another.
By now Asahi was buzzed and it was past eight. His hands kept lightly pushing Aone's arms and he kept laughing, enjoying himself. At some point Aone had scooted closer and now had a hand on Asahi's forearm, fully focused in on what he was saying.
Asahi finally noticed and a shiver went down his spine. He laughed and checked the time. "Crap."
"What's wrong?"
"I really should be heading home soon. Nishinoya is gonna get worried." He stood, collecting his bag. Aone stood with him. "I'll walk you to your car."
"Thank you." Asahi headed to the door as Aone closed their tab. They headed to his car, Asahi nervous as he usually was in the dark. Aone got a bit closer and set a hand on his back. Asahi glanced back but kept walking, unlocking his car. He stopped at the driver's side door and took a deep breath. "That was really fun."
"I'm glad you thought so."
"I really did." He leaned into his car and his hair fell straight back again.
Aone brushed it forward and Asahi tried to ignore the urge to ask if he could just stay like that for a moment. He really didn't need to though as Aone's hand went back to the other side of his head to get the other side of his hair. When it went back up a second time though he realized what was about to happen and melted on the inside a little.
Aone stopped though and looked him in the eye. "Asahi?"
"Yeah?"
"You aren't incredibly intoxicated right now, are you?"
"No. Just a little buzzed."
Aone nodded and let his hand trace Asahi's jaw, stopping at his chin. He tried not to hesitate again but Asahi could see how nervous he was.
He touched his hand. "You don't need to if you don't want to. I know you want to."
"I do not want this to damage my reputation at the school."
"No one will know. I promise." Asahi smiled.
Aone pressed his lips to Asahi's, soaking up that little smile of his in one swift move. Asahi closed his eyes and relaxed for once, his arms finding their way to Aone's shoulders. Aone pulled away for long enough that Asahi could breathe before reclaiming his spot. Asahi tightened his grip, pulling him a bit closer. A faint click was heard before the car door leading to the back seat of his car was opened and yet again he melted just a bit.
