6. Flatter Roads
"So! How was that?"
Asahi looked over. "Noya. Please."
"Come on a big dude wrapping his big muscle arms around you? Must have been a wet dream dude."
Asahi put his coat down. "He doesn't have half a leg Noya, he couldn't help it. Besides I don't crush on every single guy who has muscles."
"Daichi?" Nishinoya countered.
Asahi paused. "That's not fair."
Nishinoya laughed and set down his phone. "Seriously though. Was he okay?"
"Yes. His prosthetic just scratched him." Asahi rubbed Button's back. "Hi honey."
"Did he smell good?"
"Stop that!" Asahi shouted, face heating up. "He is just a teacher like me. That is all."
"Well...?"
"Yes. Like very expensive cologne." Asahi smiled before giggling. Nishinoya handed him a beer. "What's this for?"
"So you can relax."
Asahi eyed his best friend before sitting on the couch and turning on the TV, sipping at the drink. An hour later he was giggling like crazy, going on a rant about how much he appreciated Aone's toned arms.
"And that's enough alcohol for you bud!" Nishinoya stood, stretching. "I would love to hear more but hearing you talk about how you wanna make out with a guy that big is a bit too much for me right now."
Asahi giggled. "I need something to hold onto."
Nishinoya handed him a pillow and rubbed his shoulder. "Get some sleep dude."
Asahi laughed softly. "He's so fucking hot Noya. Not only that but he's so sweet."
"Cool dude. You found a friend."
Asahi closed his eyes before humming softly to himself. "I need sleep."
Nishinoya covered him up and set a glass of water next to him. Asahi slept within minutes, clinging to the cushion. In the morning he woke up and had a terrible headache and a slight remembrance that today was the last day before the break.
He trudged to the shower before promptly eating and going to work, his lovely roommate not to be seen. He accepted projects and graded them as they were presented before sighing heavily and sleeping behind his desk after class, hair down and all over the place.
Aone was in the classroom hours later, in a wheelchair instead of his standard fitted leg. He ignored the sleeping male as best he could despite the snoring. As his students arrived he gave them their tests and had them silently take them during the class period. Instead of them talking afterwards like usual he had them simply turn in their tests, handed them each a lollipop, and dismissed them to break.
When all of his students had left he got out of his wheelchair, sliding to the floor to get Asahi's things together.
"Asahi? Sir?"
Asahi's head lifted and he hummed. "What time is it?"
"Nearly eight. Are you feeling alright?"
Asahi nodded and sat up. He rubbed his eyes. "Crap. I'm sorry."
"It's alright. Again, are you feeling alright?" Aone touched his hand and Asahi looked up.
He laughed before nodding. "I'm okay. I had a bit too much to drink last night and my roommate forgot to buy more medicine for headaches. It's okay though." He spotted the missing part of Aone he hadn't noticed before.
Aone glanced at his leg. "Ah."
"Are you okay?"
"I just need to remove it until it got fixed."
Asahi nodded and a mess of his hair fell in front of his face. He sighed and pushed it back. "Got it. Anyways I'm really sorry about that. It's super embarrassing. Can I take you for a drink or tea or something?"
Aone checked his watch. "That'll be alright."
"So... drinks or tea?"
"Either."
Asahi stood and helped Aone up a bit. He grabbed his bag and headed to the door, Aone shortly behind him. He checked his bank account before finding a nice place to get some tea at nearby. As he did so Nishinoya called him and he quickly explained that he couldn't talk and was heading to get tea with a friend. Nishinoya on queue decided to make fun of Asahi for being so flirty with his coworker.
Asahi hung up and Aone didn't seem to have a reaction, more so struggling to get up a hill they were on. "Would you like if I pushed you up this instead? I really don't mind."
"I'm alright." Aone sighed and pushed harder on his wheels.
Asahi spotted a shop across the street. "Why don't we go over there?"
Aone glanced over. "I can't turn that sharp."
Asahi paused.
Aone finally looked up and nodded. He allowed Asahi to help him out before they entered the shop, noticing the lack of students here. Asahi got them situated and Aone checked the time again.
"Is everything okay?"
"I'm expecting a phone call."
"Oh?"
"It's for my prosthetic."
Asahi nodded. "What happened?"
"It needs to be fitted." Asahi took off his coat and Asahi noticed a sleeve of roses as he put his jacket on his chair.
"Wow..."
Aone glanced at him before looking at the menu.
"Are all of your tattoos flowers?"
"They are."
"Where are you tattooed at? The ones I've seen are beautiful."
Aone paused. He looked up. "My arm, my back, and previously my leg."
Asahi's eyes widened. There was no way for him to know that previously of course but it still shocked him in some way to know this. Had he offended him? Insulted him? Reminded him of hundreds of dollars down the drain?
"That one was much smaller. Don't worry."
Asahi nodded and averted his eyes. The waitress came up and Aone ordered for himself, Asahi's whispers soon following. He sat there awkwardly, not wanting to ruin the mood even worse than he already had.
"Asahi."
Asahi looked up, nervous. "Yes?"
"I have to answer this call. Do you mind?"
"I don't mind." Asahi paid attention to his cup.
Aone answered the phone and instantly it was obvious that he was annoyed. "Hello... no, of course. Plus one? I'm sorry I don't- Ah. Okay. I'm sorry." Aone looked up at Asahi. "Do you mind doing something for me?"
"Of course, anything you need."
"The teachers in my department are having a New Year's party. Would you like to attend it with me?"
"Oh! I'd love to!" Asahi's face split into a grin and he clasped his hands together under the table. He had no idea why he'd accepted the invitation despite usually staying home and reading on those nights. He hated crowds and hated parties with a passion.
"Got it." Aone turned back to his phone and kept talking before he hung up and set his phone down. Asahi carried most of their conversation for the next hour, both needing to leave as the shop prepared to close down for the night. Asahi took Aone to the train station and departed from him to get to his apartment down the road.
It must have been a struggle to push himself up the hill earlier that night so Asahi tried to stick to flatter roads. Aone was independent and likely hated the fact that Asahi was helping him out. An invitation to a party was one thing but having to rely on someone for their mobility was something else entirely.
At least he worked tomorrow and could drown that out of his memories and hopefully not guilt trip himself into crying. Speaking of which he'd discovered Nishinoya looking at applications at his store when he'd gotten home.
That was especially weird since Nishinoya hated retail work. He ignored it though and quickly dismissed it. Instead they sat on the couch and discussed the plans for the week, for Christmas, and finally for New Year's Eve. Nishinoya predictably freaked out when he discovered that his best friend was a hot guy's plus one to a party, immediately noting a social media post of the other male in a particularly good looking formal outfit (he'd stalked all of Aone's accounts earlier that week for this purpose).
Asahi rolled his eyes and messaged Aone through one of these social media apps for his number to get in contact with him properly before going to bed and waking up in the morning to go back to work.
