1. Cats Over People
Asahi turned his chair, glancing over the groups of students in the room. They all seemed calm with their projects that he had assigned for an especially easy literature lesson about theme. A grade school subject of course, but something easy for right before the break.
To him, it was odd how years ago he had been too anxious to talk to anyone and now he was talking in front of 300 students every morning giving lessons about great authors and tragic stories. It had always been his dream to teach about something so meaningful to him.
Asahi got up, going to the groups to check on their progress. He sighed, realizing the idle chatter was about other things than the reading. They weren't working. "Everyone! Please look up to the board!"
There was a group of groans.
"I know, I know. Would you all like a Kahoot instead since the break is coming up?" Asahi sat down at his desk. He smiled at the cheering. "I'll clean off the board."
When he turned to the board he sighed at the thin writing in purple expo marker. "Can one of you who's in the physics class tonight take a picture of this for your teacher?"
"Mr. Aone said to erase it on the Remind since he won't have class today or tomorrow," a student chimed in.
Asahi hummed. He wiped off the board. "Go ahead and pull up Kahoot guys."
He finished up and sat down, starting the Kahoot. Was it related to his class? Absolutely not. He himself was tired and just wanted the break to come.
As he heard the shouts from his students over questions he organized his desk. There was a book on his desk that wasn't his. He opened the book, checking to see the name. The name of the person was, of course, the name of the physics teacher who taught that night. According to the other teachers, he seemed ominous and offsetting so there was no way Asahi was going to try to meet up and give it to him. Asahi then realized he wouldn't be there for the next two classes and sighed.
At least the cover was pretty. Asahi closed the book, putting it in his bag. It would be fine.
The Kahoot ended and he congratulated the winners, finishing up the class. He went to his car, noticing that it was warm. He loved warm weather where he still needed a soft sweater. He went home, humming softly.
When he got home he checked through his mail and greeted his cat, holding her against his chest as he relaxed.
"Mm... Button. Oh, little Button. You are so sweet." Asahi laid back. "I bet you would be a good student if you were human. Half of mine suck. Nishinoya thinks so at least. I wonder when he'll get back?"
Button meowed, stretching.
"Cute." He set her down, walking to the kitchen. "What do you think? More instant ramen tonight?"
Button rubbed against his ankles, purring. She was his companion and he loved when she huddled up to him. She was a sweet elderly cat, unlike the stereotypical fussy old cats he heard about a lot.
As Asahi prepared his ramen he heard his phone buzz and checked it, worried that a student had needed something serious. Instead of it being a dire situation it was a student informing him that the evening teacher was wondering if he'd forgotten his book. Asahi replied quickly, fixing the pot on the stove. He turned off the oven eye, realizing that he had turned it to hot instead of going from low to hot. Oh God, that made him cringe. He finished up and sat on his couch, Button by his side.
Eventually, he got bored again, not used to having classes at night. He couldn't do things now. Maybe... The book? Nishinoya wouldn't be home for a while so he had at least a bit of quiet at the moment so he could read.
It had a nice leather-looking green cover and silver lettering. It wasn't physics related either, which was a huge plus. He preferred the science of the kind over the science applying to a ball rolling.
Asahi took out the book, admiring the pretty images on the inside. As he began reading he noticed the notes on the pages in thin cursive in dark purple. He read for about an hour before closing his eyes and huffing softly, tired from the day.
"Come on Button. Bedtime." Asahi got up, moving a pillow down to have Button sleep on it. He brushed his teeth and hair, frustrated by the knots in it. Why didn't he just cut all of it off at this point?
He laid down, petting Button in the dark. She meowed softly, purring.
"It's just you and me sweet girl."
****
Asahi leaned back in his desk chair, reading the book that the other teacher had left. His students were all enjoying their projects now that he'd fixed it for there to be an art piece included.
Asahi was genuinely enjoying this book though, enjoying the character development. Plus he'd found out that this book was not a straight to the point boring book. It was a beautiful book about two warriors that were searching for each other told in each's perspective.
And today was much better since he had his normal schedule of morning classes. He liked it.
"Professor! May I go pick up something from the office?"
Asahi looked up. "You have ten minutes."
"Thank you!" The student hurried out of the room and returned minutes later with two bags full of boxes.
"Layla... What is this?" He questioned, genuinely confused by her bringing the bags to him.
"I bought you new paper, pens, erasers, expos, wipes for the board, a very cute calendar, and a book. I also bought doughnuts for the class." She grinned and he quickly noticed the little hearts all over the bag with his new supplies.
"Oh wow... I..." Asahi laughed nervously. "How?"
"Amazon has great deals," she commented brightly.
"Ah. Well... Just don't be disruptive. Go ahead and give out doughnuts." Asahi took his gifts. He put the regular supplies in the desk drawers. He took out his small sticky notes, deciding that he would use them in the book. They weren't ultra-sticky so Aone could toss them out when he got it back.
Asahi put his notes in with Aone's short notes. Hopefully, that was okay.
"Oh! Here!"
Asahi looked up as a doughnut was put onto his desk. "Thank you."
"No problem!" She pranced off.
Asahi laughed, sitting up. He ate the treat before going to grading, putting in some grades before the class ended. When it did end he changed into different clothing, going to his other job. Sure he didn't need the job but he liked living comfortably so a little store work wasn't too bad.
He went to clock in, putting up his hair. As he did so his hairband snapped, making him flustered. He was called out to start working, hair still down. Asahi fiddled before hurrying out. He hated having his hair down in public.
"Asahi! Line three!"
Asahi hurried over, tying his apron. He turned to the cashier, who was male and very obviously not carrying a hairband. Oh lovely.
