When It Starts
My name is Olive Mia Augustine. I live–lived in El Jebel, Colorado. The world was ending that normal day of school, that wasn't that normal anymore. Barely anyone was left alive in my area. Only a few people were spared, and I guess I was one. I got up in the rubble and found everyone around me dead but Chase. He was a tough guy, I wasn't surprised, but he was so scared.
.
His slicked back, dyed blue hair was now hanging in his face. He was trembling. I couldn't hear a thing yet, everything was a siren because of the explosion. Neither of us had broken bones, or were majorly injured. He gripped my shoulders with his hands that were covered in ash as my hearing came back. His orange eyes screamed fear as I can hear what he's saying. He's yelling.
"Why aren't you freaking out! Everyone's dead!" He screams and shakes me. "They're fucking dead!"
I look at Averys body. He was my best friend–only friend. Now he's dead. He looks peaceful, even though a metal rod is going through his body and he's bleeding out of his mouth, his legs trapped under a beam. I reach down for my notebook. My computer is completely broken. Screen is cracked and twenty feet away from the keyboard. My notebook is fine. I swipe away the ash on it and open to the first page. Of course it's blank. It always is. I just keep it around so people think I'm artistic.
I grab the pen in Avery's hand. He grabs my hand. I don't flinch, I just look at him. Chase screams. His brown eyes meet mine. "W-What happened?"
"Shhh Avery. Talk less, go mellow," my voice is soothing. "You're dying."
"I-I am?" I nod. His eyes look broken. He squeezes my hand. "W-What happened."
"A bomb went off by the side of the school." I looked away from my screen and saw it fall. "Go numb Avery. You'll go somewhere nice. You'll be happy there."
He nods, his hand going weak in mine as I slip the pen from his hand. His head falls as blood leaks from his pink lips that turn pale. I open to the cover of my notebook as Chase rants behind me about Avery dying before our eyes and how I'm a monster for not freaking out. I write on the cover.
Apocalypse Guild
I flip to the first page.
Rule #1
Don't be attached to anyone
Rule #2
Travel by yourself or in a small pack (4 maximum)
If Supernatural has taught me anything it's how to survive. I grab my backpack that has no holes in it, only ash laying on it. I wipe it away and empty it of its contents. I stand up and swing it on my shoulder, grabbing Chase by his wrists and squeezing as hard as I can. He looks at me. "Stay calm. I will leave you to die if you aren't calm." He nods, taking a deep breath then looking in my eyes again. "We need to go to each classroom and see if anyone's alive. If they are and they're not injuries they walk with us, if they are we put them out of their misery."
"You're saying I have to kill them!" He yells and rips his hands away from me. "I won't do it!"
"You'll have too. They'll die in days of an infection if not treated-"
"So we'll treat them!" Chase yells back.
"With what medical treatment? The nearest hospital is in Aspen." I glare into him. I know he knows I'm right. He looks at me again. "We need to go looking. You're either coming or not, either way you're going to die. Either in a few days, or in years. Your choice." I walk out through the wall that was blown down. I go down the hall and he soon runs up to me. I walk into the nearest classroom. Everyone's dead. I keep walking and we go down the hall of the school. We go to each class, and everyone is dead.
"Why aren't you scared?" He asks.
"I've seen enough death on TV shows that this doesn't scare me." I blow my red hair out of my grey eyes. I stop in the hall and write down another rule.
Rule #3
Leave no trace. Don't be followed
I look behind us as I close the notebook. The wind is covering our footprints. "Help..." It's weak. They're dying. I look forward and walk into the next classroom. Chase hides behind me. She's a fifth grader;we ride–rode the same bus. Her legs broken and her head is basically tearing in half. Her skin is peeling off on half of her body. I hear Chase gag. "Please help me..."
"There's only one way we can help you." I pick up a four by four. Her eyes bulge as I break off the part that was breaking.
"P-Please don't kill me!" She screams but it's too late. I've already dug it through her body. She gags, then falls back as blood spills from her body.
I walk out of the room and find two kids walking the halls. They're clinging to each other and covered in ash and dust. They're twins. You can tell by their faces. They walk to us slowly, they couldn't be older then twelve. "D-Do you know what happened?" One has a mole under her left eye.
"A bomb dropped. Are you hurt?" They shake their heads. They have scraps but nothing too bad that we'll have to drop them. Chase walks up behind me. "I'm Olive and this is Chase. What're your names?"
"I-I'm August and this is June." Mole says. "Do you think our parents are alive?"
"No," I bluntly say. June starts to cry. She already broke rule 1. "But you can walk with us. We need to check the rest of the school then we're going to our houses to get supplies. I have my backpack to get food from the cafeteria." I tell them a plan I made that I didn't share with Chase. I probably should have by the way I can feel him looking at me.
"W-We live in Carbondale," August whimpers.
"And I live in El Jebel. We'll have to make due by walking."
"I know how to drive." I look at Chase. He gulps down a lump in his throat. "I can drive us. I live in Carbondale too." They nod and we look through the other classrooms. More kids are hurt. If they're hurt enough I leave them for dead, not enough and I'll kill them. June says I'm a manic. August says I'm doing the right thing while Chase stays quiet.
