Talking Till Our Lungs Give Out

Chase tickles my sides in my sleeping chamber, giggles and screams of laughter leaving me as Chase's fingers touch every curve of my body gently making me laugh louder. He seizes when I kick his leg, gently kissing my forehead and grabbing a book form the edge of my bed. "Read to me," he smiles as I sit up and take the book from his hands, placing his head in my lap. I play with his hair.

"Why don't you read?" I chuckle as I get my breathing under control and he closes his eyes.

"Your voice is soothing and after target practice today, I need something soothing," I sigh in pity. He must be under a lot of stress. He's basically been drafted. I look up at my panel, still flashing that same word.

"I'll only read if you answer my question," he mumbles words that correlate to okay. "Why did you take so long with the doctors check up?"

He licks his lips, opening his eyes as I look down at him. "Why do you want to know?"

"I'm concerned. You took the longest and had the least injuries." He sighs, turning his head then looking back up at me.

"They think I have a type of cancer. My days cut because I usually get tested in the afternoons but they canceled it today for this little girls kidney transplant." I nod slowly.

"Do they know yet?"

"No, but they think it's from my Dads side. He apparently died three years after he left, dying from a cancer they couldn't trace back to a certain place. It was everywhere," I nod slowly. "But they don't think I do, so I'm hoping for the best." He gently smiles as I hear the sleeping quarter doors open.

"Do you still have the ring?" He nods, sitting up and pulling it form his pocket that was on the same chain as his dog tags. He takes it off and holds it in between his forefinger and thumb. I stare at him with glossy eyes, trying my best to look cute.

The lightbulb flashes in his head as my sleeping chamber door opens. "Will you marry me?"

"Yes," I giggle as he softly smiles and slides the ring onto my finger. It barely fits with the wight I lost, but I'll make it fit.. We sit in silence before Chase laughs in happiness, tackling me and burying me in kisses.

"So you two are mental," Lily clicks her pen and writes something down. I roll my eyes as we sit up, Chase smiling as he holds my waist.

"We're not mental. We're in love," I giggle as Lily rolls her eyes again, climbing onto the bed and sitting by the door.

"Well, your fifteen and legal laws-"

"Worlds gone, we can get married," Chase interrupts. "There's no age limit on anything, so we can get married–"

"On this base we hold the same laws as if we were in America." She smiles, gritting her teeth. Chase kisses my shoulder and she glares into him again. "Now, if you're uncomfortable with these questions just say so." We nod as Lily clicks her pen again. "What happened the day the bombs dropped?"

"We woke up in rubble at the middle school, Avery died in my arms, we found the twins stalked up-"

"Details, Olive," she says.

"We woke up in rubble at the middle school, Chase started cursing and screaming and I was calm. I didn't know what to think–everything was dizzy and I could barely breath. Avery was stuck under a beam and was crushed and I told him to die–" Chase holds me closer as I choke back tears. "I-I told him to die a-a-and he did because we couldn't do anything to save him–"

The tears fall fast and Chase does what he can to keep them away. I know he hates it when I cry, but right now, I can't help it. He picks up where I left off. "We left the classrooms and went into others looking for survivors. Nearly everyone was dead, and if they weren't dead they were dying quickly, and we helped put them out of their misery," Lily stops writing and stares at us, her eyes wide as Chase's thumbs run against my knuckles.

"You killed people?"

"Not kill, assisted in death." Chase clarifies, "After that we found the twins and then we found the van in the school parking lot, stopped by Seven Eleven and packed up on food, water and gas and stopped by our houses, packed up clothes and shit and drove past Glenwood and into the woods," he looks at me as I wipe my cheeks free of tears. Avery. I miss Avery.

Lily hums. "What was the most difficult part of your journey?"

"Olive getting burned," Chase blurts out. "I-I was next to her and a deer bucked her and she feel into the fire. I worked as fast as I could but you still got burned." His voice breaks.

"You didn't hurt me. You helped me," I stare at me feet that are wrapped in fuzzy socks. "M-Mine was..." I don't know. Watching my only friend die was hard, and so was having to protect everyone. So was Miles and everyone and God, I wish this didn't happen. "Protecting everyone. I was basically the leader, I had to do almost everything." Lily nods again.

"What was the most stressful?"

"Averys death..."

"Nathan passing out near an open fire with his ankle all fucked up," Chase sighs.

"The saddest?" Lily asks.

"Growing up so fast..." I whisper.

"Having to leave everything behind."

"Last question. What was the scariest thing?" She looks at us, then the clipboard.

"Death," I stare at my feet as my nails dig into my palms. "So much death and nightmares and days I didn't eat or sleep because I was terrified we were going to die any second–" Chase has to make me shut up by just holding my wrist.

"I-I have to agree. The entire thing was the scariest thing I've ever done," he holds me closer and I nuzzle my head into his chest. Lily nods.

"Well," Lily looks up. "I'll have these reviewed and then we'll see where you're placed, Olive your new occupation hasn't been updated but as soon as you reach one hundred pounds you can start working as–" she scans her clipboard over and over again. "–a depression consultant." I stare at my feet. I don't question it, Chase does. "It's what I do but with people with depression. I consult people with PTSD, she gets depression. Almost half the people on the base has PTSD, and a third with depression."

She starts to leave. "Lily," she looks back at me. "What happened to Mom and Dad?" I don't look up.

"Mom was found in her room, a suspected cardiac arrest. Dad was found under a water heater, his ribs and pelvis crushed," I keep back the tears. "Anything else?"

"No, thank you." she hums and walks out of the room.

Chase gently rubs his hands over my probing hip bones as he snuggles up against me. "Chase, do you think there's a chapel on this base?"

"Yes," he kisses my neck. "Why?"

"Do you think I'd look good in white?" I stare at the wall, Chase turning me and hovering above me.

"Olive, you'd look gorgeous in any color you wear, I've been to the chapel to pray for my mother and yes, they'll marry anyone who is above fourteen," he kisses my nose. "I checked on the age after your sister left and you went to the bathroom." I stare at his eyes. His gorgeous eyes that I don't know when I fell in love with. "We can get married tomorrow and eat a shitty cake in the cafeteria and–"

"No," I shake my head. "I want to wear white and have you in a tux and have my sister and Asha and Nathan and the twins there. I want to have a wedding cake and..." I shake my head. "Never mind."

"No, I want to make you happy," Chase lies down next to me and I look at him. "I want you happy on our big day and I want your sister to not hate me and I want our friends there, our family. If I do have cancer, I want you by my side every step of the way, Love," I gaze at him. "I love you."

"I love you too," he softly smiles and kisses me gently. "So, when?" He holds my hand.

"Next week?"

"Is that enough time?"

"We need a cake, tux and dress. I think it is," he chuckles and kisses me again. I can't sleep, and he pretends too. I sit up and look at the new job I have that I should be starting in a dew days. I stare at the wall, holding my knees to my chest as the door opens. I look at it as Nathan peaks through, holding a finger to his lips and holding his hand to me. I hesitantly get out, the door closing behind me as Asha holds her arms crossed in front of her.

"We heard your conversation," I look at my hands. "I can get you a dress, Nathan can get a tux for Chase," I look back up at them. "But you have to weigh one hundred and twenty pounds by the time of the wedding."

"I can't gain thirty pounds in a week," I laugh dryly.

"Well then your weddings not in a week. Chase may want you to gain weight, but you need it." Nathan pulls his hands into his pockets. "You shouldn't weigh fucking ninety pounds."

"I can tell Doctor Martin of your goal and wedding date," Asha smiles. "And I could get you some medication that helps you gain weight faster,"

"Thank you," she nods and I bite my lips as Nathan and her walk off to their respected beds. I climb back into mine and kiss Chase's head, lying back down. He turns and wraps his arms around me, mumbling I love you and kissing in between my shoulder blades.
