Orgaization Is Key

I walk to August and look at the misc pile. It's mostly just things we have put don't need that much or things I forgot to mention. "A pile for things to cook, things to clean, protection and extra clothing. Everything else will go in a misc pile." They nod and continue to work. I look at the extra room behind my seat, making signs and tapping them up with tape I took form the store. Chase bangs on the van.

"What else?"

"More wood." He whistles and gets to work. I take my notebook and make an inventory that's organized by pile. As the twins finish I have them take a break by the fire. Chase cuts down a tree and I watch him. His muscles tense in his arms before he swings forward and hits the tree. It soon falls over with a large thud to the ground. He wipes the sweat off his brow with his shirt and keeps working. I watch him. He doesn't notice.

"Olive likes Chase." June giggles. She doesn't talk much, but when she does it's not that much. Only a few short words or a sentence or two.

"I don't. I'm studying him." I stick my tongue out to her. "Both of you start moving the piles into their places. One pile at a time." The groan but work. They got the most sleep while I got none, they shouldn't be complaining. I walk to Chase, the leaves crunching under my feet. He turns and looks at me.

"What else will I have to do?" He heaves, then continuing his act of cutting down the tree.

"Finish cutting down the tree. Afterwards cut it into logs so we have a place to sit out here then cut the rest into fire wood. Then take a break." He nods, continuing his act again. I walk to the twins, checking the time again as they move each pile one at a time. Ten am.

I nod at them. They nod and smile back. I walk to the fire and take off my hoodie, waving so much air into the fire it goes out. I climb into the van after, putting my hoodie back on and pull out my bags, then Chases, then August and June's. They're not even organized. I clean mine up, putting my shoes up against the seat with my hoodies, jackets and socks in one bag and my shirts, pants, bras and underwear in the other. I do the same for everyone else's but Chases.

I check the time again, looking at the fire pit as June and August rest on a log, Chase nearly asleep on the other. One pm. "Olive." I look at August. "If you want to take a nap you can. Chase says you were up all night watching over us."

"I'm fine. I do all nighters all the time," a chuckle escapes my throat as I sit on the edge of the van. I look at the piles. They're organized in the back with the rear door shut. A yawn escapes me.

"Seriously, get some sleep." Chase crosses his arms. "Just tell us what we need to do and we'll do it while you sleep." His eyes are tired.

"I know there's a river nearby so take one of the buckets and file it with water so we can clean the forks then take another bucket and set it up as like a drying rack. Wash the forks and then," I yawn. "Chase move the guns and shit into the van and organize your bags. One with your shirts, pants–just look in mine to know what to do. Then hide the van by putting branches, leaves–anything to hide it around it so people won't know we're here. Wake me up at six so I can start dinner." I yawn and lie down on my seat, my eyes falling and soon I'm off and asleep.

I slowly open my eyes and stretch my arms out and above my head. I sit up and rub my eyes, yawn and look at Chase as his eyes bore into me. "It's six." I nod and get up, make the bed and start to make sandwiches. I wrap them in paper towels so they don't fall apart, giving everyone their sandwich and starting the fire. I slowly blow on it and it soon lights. I make my own sandwich and sit on the log as they eat. I don't know why I'm good at living like this. I should be just as panicked as them, but I'm not. Chase stands up and throws in his paper towel, walking to the pile of logs and taking two and throwing them in and sitting down again as the sun sets ahead of us.

"The rivers not that far," August smiles, the fire lighting up her face. "I was thinking that in the morning we could all go down and wash up."

"It's fall," Chase yawns. "It's going to be freezing if we go down. We need hot water." He crosses his arms.

"We can boil it and then bath-"

"Auggie, no," June sighs and shakes her head in her hands. "We'd burn our skin off."

"No like, leave it long enough to get hot but not enough to burn."

"August, it's a nice thought but I don't think it would be a good idea. We need to get ready for winter first so we either need to prepare here or find a place to stay for winter, but I think it'll be here." She sighs and nods.

"What if we need to bathe?" August asks.

"Only if it's a need but this has been our lives for a day, and if anyone would need it it would be me and Chase. The building literally fell on us." The Twins slowly nod. "Now get ready for bed." The stand up and get in the van, taking off their shoes and brushing their teeth as me and Chase clean up to the site. We put out the fire at eight thirty, getting in the van and him getting ready for bed.

He puts his hand on my shoulder as I pick up a gun and load it, cocking it and sitting in the passenger seat of the van. I look up at him as he softly smiles, taking the gun from me and setting it on the dashboard. "Leave tonight to me. We should trade off every other night." I slowly nod and stand up from the seat.

"If you see anything move, get out and shoot." He nods and gets out, sitting on the roof of the van. I sigh and get in my seat, lying in it but never sleeping.
