Get Away Driver

I stop us in the hallway as we walk down it to get to the cafeteria. I look at my group. We hit four so any more people would just be for collateral damage. Not that collateral damage would be that bad. Just some extra weight we could shake off if needed. I open my notebook and write down another rule.

Rule #4
Get 1 (singular) person to be collateral damage

"I have a plan okay?" August nods. She's the only one who seems somewhat interested in what I'm going to say. "We're going to go get bags. If they're torn or ripped ditch them. We need five bags that are fully together, six all together. We'll need them to store food and then we'll have duffle bags for our clothes from our houses but we won't be able to bath or change that much. We're going to stop by City Market anyway to get food. We need to stalk up so start making mental lists. When we find a car I'll write it all down." August and June nod. Chase only shrugs.

"What do we need to do?" August asks.

"I'm going to start a list of things we need, not want. You guys spread out and find backpacks that we can use and I'll also start going through the cafeteria. It was sixth grade lunch, and I don't want you to see it." June nods quickly and the twins take off. I hear them call me Muerte. I know that means death in Spanish. Chase looks at me. "What?"

"Why aren't you phased by any of this?" He asks, shoving his hands in his pockets.

"Because I've seen death and destruction in books and TV shows enough not to be phased. If you could see into my mind you would think I was a psychopath. Now go with the twins and help them. If they die I'm blaming it on you." I glare at him and walk into the cafeteria. At least nine are injured, five dying slowly and everyone else dead. I kill everyone quickly then walk into the kitchen. I wonder if the Twins heard their screams to have me stop, but they were mostly all begging for me to put them out of their misery. I walk into the kitchen, shifting through everything, they were making food so nothing's good to keep if we keep it, or else it would mold.

I walk back into the cafeteria then out of it and into the foyer. I sit on one of the couches that's covered in ash, dust, drywall and blood and start to make a list of things we need. I think of things that will go bad easy and won't.

I'll think of more later. Those girls would have obviously have started already. June comes running with two backpacks in her hands, August behind her as Chase walks with one. August is holding four, and they're gigantic, well bigger then mine. "I-I found extras if we need them." She smiles.

I nod and stand, walking towards the front of the school. They follow and I stop out front. "Put the backpacks inside each other then put one on your back. We need to find an open car and Hotwire it." A car alarm goes off. I look at it as its lights flash. The windows aren't shattered. I look back as Chase as he holds a pair of keys in his hand, other pairs dangling from his fingers.

"I went to classrooms looking for keys instead." He shrugs and walks to the car. He opens the front door of the jeep and looks at the dash. He curses and slams the door. "It's almost out of gas!" He yells as we walk to him. August is holding June's hand as June squeezes mine. She has a strong grip.

"Try another car." He nods and takes another pair of keys and walks from car to car without a smashed window, dropping the keys if the windows are smashed or the car is out of gas. He checks the dash on the last car; a hippie van with three seats in it. It's green so it would fit in if we go into the woods, which I will make us do. It's for safety.

"Full tank. But we should stop at a gas station and file up gasoline canisters. They sell some at 7/11 across the street. We should stop there and fill up a couple and keep them in the back." He hopes in the front and I take the passenger. August and June sit in the seat closest to the front as I check everything.

"Who even owns this?" I'm guessing it's Miss Lareia. She's a total hippie.

He opens the glove compartment and checks the insurance name as I sit down. There's literally nothing in here but the seats and interior. She clearly got this car from her parents and grew into it. "Maggie Lareia."

"Knew it," I mumble as he starts the engine, throwing the other pairs of keys into the glove compartment and closing it. "Everyone ready?" August and June nod as they buckle up. They stay holding hands. Chase pulls out of the parking lot and down the road and to 7/11. He pulls up, goes into the store and we follow. June trembles as glass crunches under our feet. Only the counter guy is here, and he's dead, lying on the floor with half of his clothes and body blown away. Atomic and nuclear bombs would have caused more damage to humans and buildings, so it must have strong enough to take down a few buildings then the smoke might have a chemical that kills most people.

"T-This doesn't feel right." June whimpers.

"You gotta be strong June." I look back at her. "This is your life from now on. Stealing, robbing and breaking in. We'll be living in that van until we find a hideout or campsite." She slowly nods and I hand her and August the backpacks. I have June and August file the back packs with food and drinks, nearly taking everything as I follow Chase with the canisters.

"We shouldn't leave them alone. June's terrified."

"They have each other. They're fine," I say as he files the seven canisters we have. "I'm not leaving you alone. You could run off."

"When I'll die?" He looks back at me as I lean on the van. "No way." The wind tickles his back and he flinches and turns so fast he spills gasoline on himself. Lighters and matches. We'll need those. "What was that?"

"The wind," I laugh. He growls and continues to file the canisters. "I'm gonna go get matches and lighters and to help the twins. If something happens scream for me." He nods quickly as I walk into the store and help them with food. They have a backpack full of water bottles, another with energy drinks and two with bags of chips. I grab matches and lighters from the shelves, stuffing them in my pockets as glass crunches under my feet.

I walk behind the counter and open the register and take out the money on all three of the registers. It's just paper and metal now, but it could come in handy. June walks up to me with the water and energy drink bags. I take them with one on each shoulder. "We have three bags left." August looks at me as she zips up a backpack.

"Don't fill two of them. We'll need them for things to trade if we meet other people and have something we need." They nod. "And cram as much food as you can into those bags because we'll most likely be far away from a supermarket." They nod and I walk out and put the bags in the Twins seat. There are three seats, so the back will be for our things so the twins are most likely going to have to share a bed.. I walk to Chase as he files the last canister.

"Do you think this is enough?" I nod and we put them in the back. We walk in and help June an August with their bags. I organize everything and make a list of everything we have as Chase files a few more canisters just in case. June and August talk in the front of the van as I make an inventory.
