Young But Fierce
Brooke woke up holding one of her pillows to her chest. Her bedding and blankets were a mess from her tossing and turning throughout the night, she had never been a relaxed sleeper.
Her phone rested on her nightstand, vibrating as she received a notification. Groggily extending her arm out to grab the phone, she saw it was reminding her to be at the police station by two o'clock.
The time on her phone read that it was already almost eleven. Part of her longed to stay in her bed, to soak in the warmth for a little bit longer. But she knew all too well that if she did so she'd never be out of it in time for work. So, begrudgingly, she pulled herself from the bed.
Trudging over to her drawers, she pulled out a heather purple top and a pair of black leggings. She also pulled a black leather jacket on top. Whereas Ellie's closet was filled with pastels, fun prints and designs. Brooke's closet consisted mainly of dark hues and harder textiles with leather being a common item.
Hastily pulling on her boots, she grabbed her keys, bow and arrows. She made her way down to the parking lot situated on the apartment's ground floor. Parked in the far corner of the lot was Brooke's motorcycle.
Some people wondered why she needed a motorcycle when she had a perfectly fine car to drive, but Brooke had seen first-hand how bad New York traffic and drivers could be, but with the smaller and quicker two-wheeled vehicle, she'd found that it was more effective to travel by motorcycle.
Strapping her bow and arrows onto her back, she then zipped out of the apartment's parking lot and began her drive to her favourite archery range. The one she had been going to since she had first taken up archery.
Her drive to the archery range felt quicker than it actually was, having driven the exact route several times. She parked her bike and removed her helmet, her dark brown ponytail blew in the breeze slightly as she draped the helmet over one of the handlebars.
Strolling through the front door, she exchanged a quick greeting with the employee behind the desk. Stepping outside, there were only two other small groups of people testing their hands at archery. Brooke walked over to one of the stations whose targets were further away, more of a challenge.
Pulling one of her arrows from her quiver, she readied it in her bow. While the archery range did offer bows and arrows for people to use, Brooke had always brought her own. Aiming her now-loaded bow, Brooke took a few deep breaths before she released the arrow.
Letting the arrow fly, it hit the target directly in the centre. Bullseye.
She smiled. Anyone who saw Brooke shoot would rave about her expertise and how flawless she made it look. And while Brooke was flattered by the compliments she had received ever since she had taken up archery, in her mind, she was merely average at what she did.
Ellie had actually pointed out Brooke's hypocrisy several times in the past. While Brooke would enthusiastically praise Ellie's work and attempt to build up her confidence in her ability, she would deny any comments Ellie, or anyone really, tried to make about her archery talents, she truly was just as humble as her sister.
An hour quickly passed of her hitting nothing but bullseyes on each target she used. At one o'clock she collected her arrows, placing them back inside her quiver, before strolling out of the range and walking over to her motorcycle.
Pulling out of the parking lot, she zipped down the busy streets, paying little attention to the other drivers around her. Eventually, she did reach the NYPD stationhouse. Parking her motorcycle outside, before walking in.
Quickly getting through security, she made a beeline for the locker room to change into her uniform. There she always kept a spare uniform just in case she didn't come in wearing her other one. She pulled her bow and arrows off her back and placed them inside her locker before changing.
Walking out of the locker rooms, once she had on her uniform, and straight into the staff lounge where the captain had instructed everyone to meet to hear his announcements just yesterday.
Glancing around the lounge she quickly found just the person she was looking for. Casey Jones.
Brooke and Casey had met on her first day at the station. He had been assigned to watch over her and to make sure she understood everything she was doing. Slowly a friendship began to form between the two, one that mainly consisted of Brooke poking fun at him whenever she got the chance. Their friendship was widely known throughout the police force and now it was rare that the two ever did any mission or task without the other.
That was mainly why Brooke had volunteered to be a part of the squad in charge of moving Shredder to his long-term facility because while Casey had been approached and asked if he wanted to be a part of the operation, almost every older officer in the department believed that Brooke was too young to play a role in something as big as transporting the Shredder.
But Brooke had never been one to care much for what others thought of her capability to complete a task, so when the captain had asked if anyone in the department would like to volunteer their services to help with the process Brooke immediately raised her hand.
She quickly strode over to him. "Casey" She then announced right next to him, causing him to jump slightly in his seat whilst altering him to her presence. He sighed. "Hey Brooke" He replied back monotonously, the normal tone he used when it came to Brooke and her shenanigans.
Smirking, Brooke sat down next to him. The two quickly got started on the topic of who they thought would get to join the task force. Casey teased the idea of Brooke being placed on the force with him, transporting the Shredder.
"If you do get put on just try to keep up with me okay?" He joked, clearly not believing that the captain would actually put his youngest recruit on this mission.
Brooke light-heartedly punched him in the shoulder. "Fuck you, Casey"
Eventually, the captain walked into the staff room and asked for everyone's attention. The room suddenly got quiet very quickly, everyone eager to hear his announcements. He reminded everyone of just what was happening tonight before he moved on to what everyone was waiting to hear.
"Good afternoon everyone, thank you all for coming" He began. "As you all know, tonight is an incredibly important night for our task force, tonight we transport that maniac to a facility where he won't see the sunshine for decades to come" He chanted, earning some applause from a few of the officers.
He cleared his throat to continue. "Now, you all know why I called this meeting and that is because I am choosing a few final people to join our transportation entourage" He explained, not that he needed to, everyone already knew why they were here.
Deciding to not waste any more time, the captain pulled out a small sheet of paper that had a few names on it. He began reading out the names scribbled on the paper, the people he called out were who Brooke and Casey had expected. They were the typical well experienced officers who regularly participated in missions similar to this one.
As he got to the last name on his list he paused before reading the name out. "And Brooke. You all will be joining us tonight, you'll find out your roles later on tonight" He concluded.
After hearing the captain call out Brooke's name whispers erupted throughout the lounge, everyone was shocked that she'd been allowed to participate in this mission.
Including Brooke herself. When she'd volunteered the captain had warned her that since she was so young and inexperienced it might be better that she instead sit this time out since there was a lot of pressure already on the police force and the last thing he needed to worry about was his youngest recruit being used as a scapegoat if something did go wrong.
Damien, another young recruit alongside Brooke, raised his hand to speak. "Captain, why would Brooke get to join when she's the youngest member of the force?" He inquired. Brooke had to fight her reflexes in order to hold back the eye roll she wanted to do at Damien.
Both of them fucking despised the other. Damien was two years older than Brooke and despite the small age difference, Damien believed he was way above Brooke in regards to the ranks even though they both were at the bottom of the pecking order as new recruits.
Everyone knew about the rivalry between the young recruits. Luckily, the captain had been expecting this question from at least someone. Whether it be from Damien or one of his older officers.
"I made the decision to bring Brooke on because she is dedicated to this force, and with her skills in archery and overall hand-to-hand combat abilities I have no doubt that Brooke will be an asset to this mission" The captain acknowledged.
Now, the captain wasn't lying about the facts he listed as to why placing Brooke on the operation was an advantage but he was withholding the main reason why he had made the decision.
Damien again tried to protest. "Captain, with all due respect, you have so many more officers who would be more suitable and experienced for this assignment" He not so subtly tried to suggest that Brooke's placement should be given to him instead.
Brooke knew he was trying to pull a reaction out of her so he could claim she was too immature to be placed on the operation. So, despite wanting to let him have it, Brooke kept her composure which more likely only pissed off Damien more.
"Damien, my decision is final" The captain then silenced the recruit with his final statement.
The meeting was dismissed not long after. Brooke retreated back to the locker room, retrieving her clothes and archery gear from her locker. As she changed back into her civilian clothes she received congratulations and good luck wishes from some of her colleagues.
Eventually, she exited the locker room, with all of her crap in tow, to see Casey leaning on the wall. Waiting for her.
"You need a ride home?" He asked her, the two of them lived close enough to each other so it was often for them to carpool with one another.
Brooke shook her head as she pulled out the key to her bike from her pocket. "No, it's alright, I took my bike today" She jingled the key as she spoke.
Casey nodded and together they walked out of the station. "So, he really did decide to put you on the operation" He extolled down at her.
Brooke grinned. "I know, isn't it exciting?" She rhetorically asked, brimming with euphoria. She couldn't remember the last time she was this elated about work.
"I'm still surprised you didn't rip Damien to pieces when he said that" He admitted, he had been waiting for Brooke to react in some way to Damien's comments.
"I'll tell you, I was this close" She replied while pinching her index finger and thumb close together as a visual representation of how close she was to tearing Damien a new one right in front of everyone.
The duo walked down the stairs, seeing that there was already a line for security to get out of the building the two continued their gossip. "Well since you are now a part of the mission you should realise that there's gonna be more pressure on you than anyone else" He affirmed.
And he was right. There would now be an extreme amount of pressure on Brooke to keep up with everyone else on the force. If even one thing went wrong the fault could easily, but unfairly, be passed onto her.
Of course, Brooke was well aware of that fact. While on the inside it did concern her a bit, she didn't let her fear show on the outside. "I know, Cas, but there's no way in hell I'm backing out of an opportunity as big as this" She answered.
Casey chucked. "You are fierce, Brooklyn Miller"
She grinned at his words. "Thank you"
Finally getting past security on their way out of the stationhouse, they made their way over to their parked vehicles. "I do have one question," He said as they reached Brooke's motorcycle.
She raised a brow. "And what is your question?"
"Are you even old enough to drive?" Casey asked, amusement dripping from his voice. Brooke's mouth fell open at his words, she quickly swatted him in the arm. "Dick" She muttered under her breath as she shook her head at him, a noticeable smirk now upon her face.
