27. Attack
After two hours of a drive with an anxiety-filled silence, we could see ourselves approaching a deserted industrial area. My curious eyes searched out the window, alert and observing, for any suspicious activity being conducted but, it was as if there was no trace of a civilization for miles. I couldn't say about the others but, I was jittery and agitated for what was about to come, which was quite unusual for me. I had always been very confident and calm about my missions but, I think because I knew one of my siblings was in danger and the fact that my supposed uncle was behind all the problems the whole time, was something which turned me into an angsty mess. Moreover, it was not only my family member who was in grave danger but, all of us had someone hostage under Ruth and Damien.
I have never faced any missions on such a personal level and never had I walked in blind like this time. Even though I know this is not the right time to be making such decisions, I think it'll be best if I leave my spying job, doesn't matter be it under The Organization or someone else. Some might call this a rash decision but, I had been thinking about this for a while. I am praying that everything will go well and as planned and then I could finally get to know myself, not as an individual but as where do I come from, my background and family. I cannot predict the future as such but, I am certain I will not be seeing my teammates for quite a while due to the simple fact that we will all need some time to ourselves after all that has happened.
"Hey guys, before we go and incase we don't make it back, I am sorry for anything I did to upset you. And thank you all for making these difficult days bearable and helping me throughout it," I quietly said and everyone looked at me and smile.
"Why are you being a pessimist?" Lucas muttered, somehow angry with what I had said.
I rolled my eyes, "I am not being a pessimist, I am just being realistic and addressing the current situation, which doesn't look too good to me."
Lucas chose to not say anything further and rest of the people maintained silence in the van as we seemed to approach our destination. The GPS signalled that we were at the location where our targets were and Alex gently pulled up behind the neighbouring warehouse. Everyone seemed to take deep breaths and pray for everything to go well.
After everyone got out and Ethan and I were left in the van, I avoided eye contact and mumbled softly, "Don't die."
From the corner of my eye saw a slight smile on his face and I proceeded to get out of the van but, before I could do that, I felt my arm being grabbed into a firm hold. I turned to face him about to snap when I was silenced by his lips. He pressed his lips against mine with undeniable passion, as if this were the last time we'd be seeing each other. I was mad at him but, for some odd reason, I didn't pull away. I lightly moved my lips against his soft ones and I felt him smile. When we ran out of breath, he pulled away and I fluttered my eyes open, still feeling the tingling sensation on my swollen lips. Wordlessly, I got out of the suspicious looking van feeling confident and slightly relieved. Well, I guess he noticed me fidgeting in my seat.
Ethan and I calmly and confidently walked over to the unguarded entrance of the abandoned warehouse. He kicked the door open leading it to almost breaking off its hinges. We walked in, the clicking of our boots echoing throughout the vast hall, almost making me believe no one was here. But the constant beeping and buzzing of the device in my hand assured me we were right where we needed to be.
"You wanted us, here we are," I announced loudly causing it to echo. I walked further and around the hall looking around for anything unusual.
Ethan rolled his eyes and said with annoyance lacing each syllable, "Come on, you have an army of men and you are afraid of showing your face to two teenagers. Didn't think you'd be such a coward."
A screech and a loud sob resounded throughout the large area. I turned around to see a pale girl with black hair, tied to the chair with a ball of cloth stuffed in her mouth. I recognised the brown-eyed girl and dashed towards her, fear engulfing my entire being. Ethan caught me by my waist before I could get to her and I thrashed in his hold, trying to reach the trapped and scared girl.
"It's a trap," he quietly whispered in my ear, desperately holding onto me as if his life depended on it.
My panicked eyes looked at him and he looked as if it pained him to stop me from saving my sister. I looked back at the sobbing girl to see there are mines planted all over the ground around her chair. My heart plummeted to the bottom of my stomach, fearing for her life.
"I am not a coward, son," came a voice from our left and we saw a dark figure approaching towards us.
"I am not your son," Ethan spat in anger, fury engulfing his eyes and his jaw clenching. His hold on me tightened, almost protectively and I saw a flicker of fear and concern in his orbs.
Damien's eyes moved to me and I stepped back, out of Ethan's hold, standing beside him. He smirked at me and his eyes roamed to the helpless girl tied to the wooden chair.
"I know you don't want her to die but, if you want her alive, you will do as I say." Without a second thought, I wordlessly nodded. When I looked back at Natalie, she shook her head, her hair wildly whipping around as she tried to speak through the gag in her mouth. I averted my eyes from hers and looked at Damien's face, waiting for him to bark orders at us.
Instead, he raises his hands and flicks his wrist causing a dozen giant men coming into our line of vision. Four pairs of hands grabbed me and Ethan, unexpectantly. But, I did not show any signs of restraint because I know there were a lot of people whose lives depended on me at this very moment.
A black bag was draped over my head, preventing me from seeing my surroundings, however, I could still feel the bulky men carrying me somewhere.
I was carelessly thrown on a chair and my head was then uncovered. The guards tied me up onto the chair with ropes. I looked around me and saw all of my teammates family members in the same condition as Ethan and I. Natalie was also bought back into the room and she was placed across from me in the room.
Guards stood all around the room and they seemed to be waiting for something, or rather, someone. The door to the dark room was thrown open and a figure dressed in a black cloak appeared in the doorway. Because there was light entering the room from outside we could just see the outline of a body and not the face. The person stepped forward and I was about to make a sarcastic comment about a dramatic entrance when my breath got caught in my throat after looking at the man. It was Ruth.
He wickedly smiled at my bewildered expression and kept walking till he reached my chair. He bent down to my level and said, "Hi, Kiara. It is nice to see you again, my dear."
My blood boiled looking at his face, remembering all my father told me about him and I spat at him. He rubbed my saliva off his face with a handkerchief as his face expressed his rage, and he smacked me across the face. My head whipped towards the right due to the impact of the slap and I clenched my jaw as I felt my cheek sting.
He grabbed a hold of my hair and tilted my head towards him as he spoke slowly, "You shall never behave in this manner with me ever again. Do I make myself clear?"
I looked at him expressionlessly despite the pain I felt in my scalp due to his harsh grip on my hair. "You don't deserve my respect. You ruined my family, if anything you should die in the most painful way possible," I muttered through gritted teeth.
"I swear to God, I will break your bones," Ethan yelled, filled with rage to the brim.
"This is bullshit! You're all gonna pay for ruining my life, you wait and watch," Ruth roared in anger.
He marched towards Natalie and hit her and I screamed at the top of my lungs, "You touch her again, you'll regret ever being born. One scratch on her, even one single hair on her body damaged and you'll beg for mercy."
He laughed, "Why don't you big mouths look at your position right now, such big words but you aren't even capable of moving."
A huge crashing sound was heard from outside the room which caused the entire warehouse to shake. Ruth's head whipped towards the door as it was slammed open by a frantic Damien.
"Hurry, we need to get out of here. The Secret Service and S.W.A.T. have surrounded the place. They think we are terrorist and they have been ordered to shoot at sight," he shouted over the noise of all the bullets.
Ruth and all the guards rushed out, in a hurry to get away alive and we were all left inside the room. I looked around and saw all hostages were exhausted and weren't trying to free themselves from their restraints. I looked up at the roof and muttered a quick, 'Please make this work.'
I stood up with my arms tied up to the hand rest of my chair, as my feet weren't bounded, and jumped up in the air, landing on the floor with a hard thump causing the chair to break from my weight dropping onto it. I freed myself from the ropes and dusted off pieces of cheap plywood from all over me.
I rushed around the room untying everyone's hands and when I got to Ethan, he had already freed himself. I stood in front of the door and clapped my hands to gain the attention of all hostages, "Listen up, once we step out of this room, it is not going to be an easy task for us to reach safety outside this warehouse. We are gonna have to stick together and fight anyone who attacks us. Try and dodge as many bullets as you can and throw around a punch or two. Okay?"
Everyone nodded, all of their bodies tense and rigid, portraying the fear of facing anything beyond this wooden door. Everyone assembled themselves behind me and in front of Ethan as I slowly pulled the door open. I peeked outside and noted the path was clear but, filled with bleeding corpses of the guards lying around. I scrunched my face in utter disgust and started moving out.
I instructed everyone to pick up a weapon from the bloody ground, picking a gun and two daggers for myself. Slowly, we approached towards a staircase that led us to somewhere on the ground floor. We tiptoed down the stairs, alert of our surroundings and ready for attack. We could still hear the loud noises of bullets being shot and fights taking place not too far away from our location.
