13. Happy
After arguing with Christopher and Alex for 30 minutes I finally convinced them to let me get out of bed and attend the 'mafia meeting' with them. The mafia we belong to here in Mexico is actually led by Alex. I was shocked, to say the least, it was started by Alex's father and then was passed on to his only heir, Alex.
After freshening up, changing out of a hospital gown to something presentable, I was ready to attend the meeting deciding our future plans. I had a bad feeling about things happening around here but you really cannot blame me, being wanted surely isn't rainbows and sunshine.
We made our way to the conference room which had an oval table in the middle of the room with people occupying all seats around it. There were around ten men in the room. Three seats were left open for us and we occupied our places. Alex no more looked like his giddy self, he had a hard expression just like Christopher.
I made eye contact with the guy sitting in front of me and my eyes widened to the size of saucers. "You?!" I shrieked at him.
He himself was bewildered but coyly covered it up with a disgusting smirk. "Hey," he casually greeted. We caught everyone's attention and now they were curiously looking our way.
"What the hell are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in prison?" I questioned him.
He merely shrugged while Christopher caught my attention by giving me a confused look. He looks as cute as a puppy. Shut up.
"You two know each other?" he confusedly voiced his question.
"Yeah, we do," somebody answered even before I could get a word out of my mouth. I shifted my gaze from Christopher to the guy sitting two seats away from the first douche.
I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose in annoyance, he was here too? "Are you kidding me?" I angrily muttered.
Both of the idiots who had broken into my house were sitting across from me on the table with smug looks.
"What the hell is going on? Mind informing the rest of us?" Alex asked.
"These two buttheads broke into my house the day you had dropped me at my place after we first met," I told Christopher.
"They tried to attack me but failed miserably and got beaten up," now it was my turn to smirk at them. I can feel how much their ego bruised because I said that in front of everyone ruining their reputation if they even had one, to begin with.
"You b-," the taller one stood up but Christopher's glare shut him up immediately.
"Why did you break into her house?" Alex asked the bluff men.
"To kill her....duh," the second one sassed.
One flick of Christopher's wrist had them both at gunpoint. "Why would you do that?" he snarled at them.
"Damien told us to kill the person sent to end him. He doesn't know it's her though," they blankly replied.
Alex's jaw dropped and he stood up from his seat, "You're working for that man?" he angrily asked them.
"I don't understand. You shouldn't be here anyway, my agency should've locked you up," I confusedly said out loud.
"Yeah, well The Organisation is corrupt now. They let us go cause they practically worship Damien Gray," the tall one smirked at my horrified expression. Nobody knew who I worked for and he practically announced it to everyone.
I abruptly stood up and gritted my teeth and clenched my fists in anger. The bastard revealed everything in front of people I don't even know. What really got to me was what he said about The Organisation, I knew they couldn't be trusted anymore but hearing it from someone who bought them with money hurt my self-respect. I worked for a corrupt agency, I don't even know how long they've been making us do wrong things in the name of the safety of our nation.
I felt like punching something or else I end up doing something I would regret. I was aware of Alex and Christopher stare and other members' whispers. "Rot in hell," I spat at the two bastards and angrily walked away, slamming the door of the conference room while leaving.
I remembered the turns we took from my room to reach here so I followed back to where I came from and entered the room assigned to me. I quickly changed into leggings and a tank top provided by a female here and exited my room to find a training room.
I started randomly walking and luckily for me, I found the place I was looking for. I entered, wrapped my hands and immediately started punching the punching bag. Either I was delivering solid hits or this thing was way too loose cause it kept swaying as I punched it.
All the frustration and anger I had bottled up inside me was being released and it made me feel better and was also a good way to train.
I kept mercilessly punching it till my knuckles were bleeding but I didn't stop. Suddenly, I felt my upper arm being grabbed and was swiftly turned around.
I stared into his deep chocolate brown orbs and took a relieved breath when I recognised who he was and my stiffened body relaxed. This did not go unnoticed by Christopher and he bit back a smile. He let my arm go and took my hands in his, brought them up to his face and carefully studied them.
He noticed the blood seeping through my wrapped up hand and guided me to the washroom. I did not utter even a single complain. Him wanting to take care of me made me feel safe.
He motioned for me to sit on the countertop and so I did. He bought a medical kit, stood in between my legs and started unwrapping my hands. He cleaned my bloody knuckles with a wet washcloth and then started applying an antiseptic. I hissed in pain and he looked at me apologetically. After he finished wrapping bandages he didn't move as I expected him to and waited for me to say something.
I just simply stared in his captivating chocolate brown eyes. He sighed and took my hands in his, "What were you thinking? You ended up hurting yourself."
I looked at him and then hung my head, "I was just stressed. And it doesn't hurt, its just proof I trained."
"Look, I get it your upset. You didn't want to tell me who you work for and now all of us know but you don't have to explain yourself at all."
"Honestly, I don't mind you know about my employers. It's just that.." he raised his eyebrows questioningly waiting for me to finish my sentence.
"Nevermind, it's stupid," I mumbled hanging my head in shame.
His intense gaze never left me and it was an indirect sign that he was waiting.
"I am upset because I knew The Organisation couldn't be trusted when they terminated the mission for no reason, but when he said it...it hurt. I felt as though I have been doing wrong things in the name of the nation and I was supporting the corrupt without even knowing it. It makes me lose my self-respect. I wonder how much they have used me," I sighed.
He put two fingers under my chin and gently lifted my head so that my face was levelled with his and he was looking into my eyes. "Don't think like that. It's not your fault. You did not know they were the bad guys. Now that you know the reality, you can make the right decisions. Don't beat yourself over something that wasn't your fault. And I really admire your self-confidence, don't waste it this way. I know you are a good person, doesn't matter you did not know your employers weren't," he softly said, never losing eye contact. I could see care, admiration and honesty swirling in his beautiful eyes.
I smiled at him, a real smile and wrapped my arms around his torso, tightly hugging him. I rested my head against his chest while he embraced me too and rested his cheek on top of my head. He smelt like mint and pine trees. I closed my eyes and whispered an almost inaudible "Thank you."
He heard it, like he always does, and then kissed my temple in return. I reluctantly pulled back after a few minutes to see a soft and happy expression on his face. I already knew I looked that way too. He just made me forget my worries and be happy. Even in times like this, in the middle of a mafia war and being internationally wanted, he managed to make me smile. How he does it, I'll never know.....
