Chapter 3 - The things we can remember

NOTES: Hi guys. Thnaks for ur comments on this story, I'm glad y'all are enjoying it. I was supposed to update it two days ago, but I kind of wrote some pieces again 3 or 4 times, until I was finally happy with it lol.

Enjoy.

.

Back at Kara's apartment, Oliver lay her down on her bed. She looked really weak but her cut healed already. Oliver asked her where she kept the solar lamps Nia mentioned and rushed to get them.

- And now we wait... - Kara said as she saw Oliver turning the last lamp on, putting them all around her. – Is everyone ok?

- Yes. – Oliver actually hasn't heard about Thea or Clark, but he wasn't going to worry Kara now. Bad news traveled fast, if anything happened to them, they would already know. – Nia went after Alex, to warn her.

- Thank you – Kara smiled

She felt her heart jump just by the way he looked at her, she could see he was deeply worried and it meant a lot that he stood by her side all the time, making sure she was ok and was here now, again by her side making sure she was going to be ok.

- You scared me... I'm not used seeing you get shot like this.

- Kryptonite bullets sucks, they are a pain... But I'm feeling better already – She said, adjusting herself on her bed. – You and Nia acted really fast, so I'm going to be ok.

The door opened, with Clark and Thea rushing in to check on Kara. Clark looked extremely worried and sat beside Kara.

- Brainy told us what happened and we flew as fast as possible. How are you feeling?

- I'm ok now, Nia and Oliver helped me with the bullet, and Oliver acted fast with the solar lamps... I'm as good as new.

Clark let a breath he was holding out, in relief. Thea looked relieved too, letting the tension out of her back. To see Supergirl getting hurt was completely new to her, back on her Earth they didn't have green rocks that could harm her, so Thea was used to seeing her being invincible. Knowing something could kill Kara or Clark was scary. Clark told her before about kryptonite being deadly for Kryptonians and Thea thought it really must suck to have a piece of your home planet being deadly to you.

The door opened once again, abruptly this time, with Alex rushing in, Nia and Brainy coming right behind her.

- Kara? Is everything ok? – Alex said walking straight towards her sister, and hugging her.

- I'll go back there to make sure those guys go to jail. I'll be back soon – Clark said and rushed out, becoming Superman again and leaving out of the window. Thea just stared, still impressed with it, thinking he was such a badass as she smiled.

- I'm ok, I got help – She said, hugging Alex back.

- I'm really glad. And... I need to talk to you

- I'm really glad you're ok, Kara – Nia hugged her - We have a few things to take care of... Calls us if you need anything.

- Ok – Kara smiled hugging Nia back – And thank you for helping too.

- I'm here for you!

Nia grabbed Brainy's hand and they left, leaving Alex, Oliver and Kara alone. Kara knew the look on Alex's face, it was the old sister pissed off look. Alex sat by her side and held her hand.

- I'm not sure if I'm ok with this...

- It's ok, Alex.

- No it's not! You got hurt, you can get killed next time.

- I won't... I'm not alone in this, Alex – Kara said as she looked at Oliver, who nodded - you know it.

- I know... Is just that... I was used to work with you at the DEO, and going to missions with you, I knew what was happening, I could be there for you, and now I can't because Haley has orders to not get DEO involved in anything that isn't caused by aliens.

- Refreshing to know this government only cares about arresting aliens and not their well being, like if they get killed, who cares, right? – Kara got up, feeling really angry – See? This is why Clark, Oliver, Thea and Nia are helping me. That's why we're doing what we're doing. Because the government won't fight for us, won't protect us. What happened today... Humans got hurt too. Humans are in danger too as long as Children of Liberty and their leader are out there hunting aliens, because they don't care about who gets hurt in the process, even if they are human.

- I don't like this situation...

- Me neither. – Oliver said – But that's why I came here with my sister. You are dealing with human threats and it won't be pretty, but we have to do whatever it takes to stop them.

- I know... - Alex said – That's why I came here, to tell you that even if I can't officially get involved, I'll try my best to help under the radar. If I have any information, anything that can help you guys... I'll do my best to let you know. Either me or Brainy.

- Thank you, Alex – Kara said as she hugged her – Every little thing helps.

- I need to do some stuff for J'onn, will you be ok? – Alex said, getting up after she let go of Kara's hug.

- Yes – Kara looked at Oliver and then at Alex and smiled – I'll be fine.

Oliver followed Alex to the living room and before living, she turned around and looked serious at Oliver.

- Thank you for keeping an eye on her. I don't know what I would do if anything happened to her.

- I won't let anything happen to Kara.

- I know. That's why you bought a place nearby – Alex smiled with a knowing look.

Oliver laughed and shook his head, understanding Alex's look right away as he sat down on the left side couch.

- Yes, I wanted to be close just in case.

- I'm sure you did – She said opening the door and leaving.

Kara came to the living room and sat on the empty side of the couch, holding a blanket on her hands. She threw the blanket over them, automatically and grabbed the remote, turning the TV on. She rested her head on the pillow and turned to stare at Oliver.

- Thanks for staying. – She said

- Anytime – He stared back at her. – I'm just sorry those masked guys ruined the night.

- Well, the night's not over, my friend. – She said, excitedly – This musical right here is one of the best musicals ever... The night is just beginning. – She laughed, making laugh too.

Something about Kara made him feel comfortable, light and happy. She had this way of infesting everyone with her joy and excitement over things she liked, it was impossible to resist it. He turned to look at the TV screen, but couldn't pay any attention to it because his mind went far away, remembering a few of those moments they had, that made him feel so good.

FLASHBACK

After everything was back the way they were when they defeated Deegan, Clark, Brainy and J'onn went back to Earth 38 but Kara decided to stay and hang out with Barry and Oliver on the bar they always went to after teaming up to save the world. They chat and drank together until Barry finally felt tired enough to go back home. Kara and Oliver waved their goodbyes and after Barry left, they walked out of the bar.

- So... I don't have to go back right now – Kara said – Do you want to go back for one more drink?

- Sure – Oliver said as they turned around, going back inside the bar.

There was a booth on the corner, next to a window and they sat there, ordering two beers.

- I miss this... Having a night off just to relax... You know?

- I know exactly what you mean. – Oliver said – Our lives make it hard sometimes...

- Yes, they do

- And... How are you doing? I mean, since...

- Thanks to you, I've been doing great.

Oliver smiled, making Kara smile back. He was really happy to see she was doing way better after going through so much pain after losing someone she loved. He knew that kind of pain, it wasn't easy.

- I'm glad I could help...

Kara opened her beer and took a sip, looking at Oliver, lowering her eyes to the table as she thought for a few seconds and looked back at him.

- You did more than that.

- I just helped you see what was right in front of you... That Supergirl is awesome, but Kara Danvers... She's special. She's everything that Oliver Queen couldn't be facing similar circumstances.

- I wish you could see in yourself the same thing.

Oliver took a deep breath as he stared at Kara. He knew he would give everything to believe her and actually be that person, but he knew he was far away from it. Her words touched his heart because it made him wonder how exactly she saw him, and deep down, he could have hope. They stood there, facing each other for a few seconds and Oliver stared at her lips, wondering many things. He knew she noticed it and stared back to her eyes, noticing her slight blush.

- I wish so many things...

He saw the way she looked at him, not taking her eyes from his even for one second. Now he really wanted to know what would be like to kiss her. He felt thirsty out of sudden and drank the rest of his beer.

- Like what? – She finally said it, also finishing her beer, putting the bottle on the table and looking deeply into his eyes while she waited for his answer. She couldn't stop her eyes from going to his lips.

There was a loud yell outside and Oliver jumped from his seat, followed by Kara and they both ran outside. They stared at each other and nodded with their heads, ready to jump into another fight to save someone.

She would have her answer some other day.

END OF FLASHBACK

Oliver thought about how they actually had time to get close and he felt that somehow, they were more than before. He remembered her reaction when he told her about her friend Lena back in the gala, she seemed almost happy to hear it and even before all hell broke loose and they danced together, there was something in her eyes that made him feel like hypnotized. He noticed Kara staring at him with curiosity.

- What's on your mind right now? – She asked innocently – You seem really far away.

- I'm closer than you think – He said turning to stare at her – I was thinking about how nice this is... All the times we teamed up, and all the times I got to know you a bit better. I'm happy for it.

Kara smiled, feeling warmth inside. It was so rare to see Oliver open up about what he was thinking or feeling, she was caught by surprise.

- I'm sorry is just that... - He said, adjusting himself on the couch – Star City back on my Earth is never this calm, I rarely have time to do just sit around and enjoy life the way we do here sometimes. That's another reason I wanted to have a place here. It's peaceful.

- It's even better when you have the right company with you.

Kara commented it, blushing hard and nervously biting her nails. What was happening to her? It was like she didn't have any filters anymore and that made her a bit more nervous than usual.

- Yes, it is – He said, never taking his eyes from her.

Every time they met they had a few moments of teasing each other and flirting, he felt a deep connection with her, and it was funny because even if they were opposites when it came to dealing with the kind of life they lived and life in general, they were more similar than anyone could imagine. He remembered when he was the only one that was able to reach her and bring her back from the darkness she fell in after losing someone she loved and how they became even closer after this.

FLASHBACK

Oliver opened the breach to the DEO in a hurry after getting a text from Alex Danvers, telling him she needed his help because she has no idea what else to do to help her sister.

Things were bad, as he could hear. Alex told him about Kara being in some state of depression, how she had quit her job and didn't want to be Kara Danvers anymore. She told him about what Kara had to do to save her former boyfriend from dying, and how she thought she killed him and how much she was suffering. That alone broke Oliver's heart into a million pieces, because he knew that kind of pain. He had been there. And he knew exactly what he needed to do.

- Do you trust me? – Oliver asked

Alex had a defeated look on her face mixed with desperation of trying anything to help Kara. She couldn't bear the pain in Kara's eyes, it was like all the light she had before, faded out.

- Yes.

- Good, because I know exactly what to do.

- Anything that helps, I'll be forever grateful.

Oliver wasn't usually the hugger kind of guy but he felt Alex needed it at the moment, so he let her hug him. He recognized that feeling. When Thea almost got killed, he got desperate to try anything to bring her back, he used the Lazarus Pit even knowing what could and did happen.

Oliver stood by Kara's door and knocked. It didn't take long for Kara to open it and Oliver tried his best to not look so shocked once he saw her. Alex was sugar coating the state Kara was, for sure, because he could barely recognize her. She had a cold look in her eyes, the usual brightness completely gone, she seemed emotionless.

- They really bothered you on another Earth? – Kara said as she rolled her eyes, allowing him in. – They wasted your time, Oliver, I'm sorry.

- No... - Oliver said.

- I told Alex Kara Danvers sucks! I don't like that person, I can't be her anymore...

Oliver remembered when Prometheus tortured him a year ago, how he felt so broken, how he believed he was a monster, so much he wanted to give up and never again be the Green Arrow. He understood that suffering, the lack of want to do anything else than what he believed he was supposed to do, he understood it all. He also remembered what it took for him to want to suit up again, and see he was wrong.

- I'm not here to tell you that you need to loft your head up and keep living or that you need to go back to work, get out and talk to people... None of this things helps at times like this, you also wouldn't hear me and would probably get really angry at me.

Kara looked at Oliver with curiosity. She knew he spoke from experience, she could sense it on his tone. She knew a bit about the stuff he had been through but Oliver never got into details. She knew he understood her.

- I'm here because I wanted to check on you, yes, I've heard what happened. And I wanted to ask you something, but that can wait. So... How are you?

- I'm...ok

- Tell me the truth. It's ok.

Kara looked down, not sure if she wanted to dive into her feelings but the look Oliver gave her, told her he wasn't going to take any lame excuses she could give him.

- I'm just tired.

Oliver took a few steps closer.

- I don't think we ever trained together before... And I think this is a good idea now.

- What? Why?

- Because you need to direct everything you're feeling now to something.

- You want to be my punching bag? - Kara raised an eyebrow

- Not exactly... We'll use the kryptonite technique and you'll focus on trying to hit me. You told Alex you want to focus on being Supergirl so let's try that for now.

- I can hurt you.

- You won't. Trust me.

Kara and Oliver got to the DEO training room and Oliver asked Alex to regulate the levels of kryptonite in the room, enough to suppress her powers but in a way that she wouldn't get hurt herself.

Oliver took his shirt off and stretched his muscles, gesturing with his index finger for her to come at him. Kara ran towards him and he deflected it. He kept doing that a few more times and took advantage of her distraction over her frustration to block a punch with his palm. He kept doing it, feeling each punch on his hand coming a bit stronger.

- Let it all out. C'mon.

She kept punching with her two fists, the palm of his hand was really red but Oliver wasn't feeling pain at all.

- I'm hurt, worried - She kept punching - I feel like I'm suffering because I tried to live both lives, the super hero and the normal, and failed.

Kara punched even harder as she spoke; Oliver noticed the tension building up inside of her. He held her fists and brought her in a hug as she started to cry. He let her cry and just kept caressing her hair for a while until she calmed down.

- I'm sorry.

- It's ok.

- I can't help feeling guilty. It was my decision to fill the air with led and he is out there on space, suffering because of me.

- Kara, people will suffer no matter who you are or if you're on their lives or not. That's life; we can't run away from that, so this is only about protecting yourself from getting hurt. I'm sorry, but that's no possible. Even keeping yourself focused on Supergirl and avoiding your friends and family, you still suffer because deep down you'll always love them and remember the good times you had with them, you will always miss it and that will keep you sad for a really long time. - He took a deep breath, staring down - I've been there, it only makes things worse.

Kara thought about it and yes, he had a point. Being Kara Danvers and Supergirl or Just Supergirl, it didn't change the way she felt. But the guilty part was eating her inside.

- I just keep wondering if he is alive. If he is ok... I had to put him on that ship and send him away...

- As far as I've heard, you probably saved his life. We don't know, but you did your best. You told me once about how your parents did the same for you. Imagine how they've felt. They made sure you stood a chance. My dad did the same when the boat went down. He made a sacrifice so I could live. You need to remember that you saved your entire planet from an invasion. In this life we have to make though choices and live with them for the rest of our lives. I feel responsible for a lot of pain and suffering other people went through too. I watched Sara die and blamed myself at least 3 times already before she came back to life, I saw my sister almost die and somehow it was connected to my actions. I won't tell you anything you already heard from other people so far. I' ll just tell you that it gets better, the pain won't last forever and soon you'll be able to see things in a different perspective.

- Thank you - Kara said - I can see that by looking at where you are right now. I just don't know how to get there.

- You take one step at the time. Don't rush it; things naturally happen the way they're supposed to.

END OF FLASHBACK

Thea was at her apartment alone; lay on the couch watching a movie, but her mind was far away, back to when Clark kissed her. She felt a mix of different things inside and couldn't help but smiling. She took her phone on her hand as she heard it beeping and smiled even more, seeing his name on her screen.

"Hey... Are you there?" She read Clark's message.

"Yep. I'm watching a movie. Is everything ok?"

"Yes, I just left the building. The police stayed there and arrested them."

"I'm glad to know it"

She was about type again when she heard a knock on the door and got up to open it.

- I wanted to stop by and see you before I go to Metropolis - Clark said, in his civilian clothes again.

- Did something happen?

- No... I just need to check a few things I left there since I'll stay for a bit longer in National City

Thea smiled and gestured him to come inside, closing the door behind him.

- I got bored here... I'm glad you came. - She said, turning around to face him from up-close.

- About earlier

- Listen...

They said at the same time and laughed together.

- You go first - Thea said

Clark lowered his head, looking down as he reached for her hand.

- I just wanted to say that I had a great time today. Except for the children of liberty trying to kill us... You know...

- Yeah, I know... – Me too. And the kiss was awesome - She teased, intertwining her fingers with his.

She playfully gave a slight pull, bringing him a bit closer. Clark nodded with his head, smiling back at her, letting her guide him completely. He reached for her waist with his left hand while his right hand went to the back of her neck.

- I really enjoyed it - He said it, as their foreheads touched and her hands rested on his shoulders.

- So did I - Her lips brushed his, teasing him.

Clark smiled against her lips, giving her a slower kiss than the last time and it fell like magic all over again. His hand held her short hair at the back of her neck and Thea felt chills when his hand on her waist went to her back, bringing their bodies closer. There was no rush, no hurry and it felt like there was just the two of them in the world at that moment. Thea responded the kiss, giving more room for their tongues to explore each other's.

- Your speech tonight... - Clark said as their foreheads touched. He opened his eyes slowly, looking intensely into her eyes – it was so strong and inspiring. Thank you for that.

- I felt it was the right thing to do... Is not fair what it's happening to all aliens around here and... I've seen evil coming from humans, I've experienced it destroying homes and families, I had to do something.

- I know we talked the other day, but... I didn't know all those details. I can't imagine what you've been through. If you want to talk about it... I'm here.

- Thank you. And I will – She said, reaching for his cheek, caressing it – When you come back from Metropolis I'll tell you everything you want to know. For now, I just want to give you something to think about – She said, closing the space between them, one of her hands going to the back of his neck, holding it tight as she brought his face closer to hers, giving him a breath taking passionate kiss.

Clark knew it was working and that he wouldn't be able to thinks about anything else after that kiss.
