Chapter 8: The King of the Underground.
Chapter 8: The King of the Underground.
I followed closely behind Logan but after tripping on the flat surface of the pavement sidewalk Logan ended up gripping my hand in his, intertwining his fingers and pulling me after him. We got to the air strip where the plane was and the setting sun in the background making me slow down to appreciate the view.
“What?” Logan said noticing that I had stopped.
“I’m just looking at the view.” I quickly stuttered and shook my head clear.
He looked back at the sunset and paused for a minute before looking over at me, the look on his face said it all. We had to go.
I let him lead me over to the plane and saw everyone crowed around, each one looking furious. We got closer and Logan quickly dropped my hand before anyone could see anything. Kyle was leaning against the plane with his arms crossed over his chest, Lena held the ice pack to Conner’s face while Marco sat off the side tied up and gagged but still with a self-satisfied smile on his face.
Logan looked over at his brother and then over at Kyle.
“What? He wouldn’t shut up and Conner was about to skin him alive, I had no other choice.” He justified.
“Fine, everyone get in.” Logan said pushing me to the door and grabbing Marco’s arm helping him up.
“Logan we can’t…” Lena started to protest but was silenced by a frustrated Logan.
“We can’t what Lena?”
“Well if you let me talk. We can’t fly out now, it’s going to be dark soon and it’s not safe, plus Conner can't travel when his injured and you can’t get Britney and Marco back by yourself. We should stay here tonight and then leave in the morning.”
“I’m fine.” Conner persisted.
“No you’re not.” Lena said trying to defend him.
“Logan she’s right, we can’t fly in the night with the crazy winds and the storm that’s over the triangle, we can’t risk it.” Kyle said coming to his sister’s aid.
Logan nodded and then grabbed a hold of Marco before walking off headed for the exits of the airport. Lena and Conner followed them without question while I was left behind, opened mouthed and completely confused. With everyone occupied I could easily slip away but I couldn’t get home, I had no money, no passport and if I were to go to the police with this story something tells me they would put me in a mental institution.
“Come on sweet girl” Kyle said from behind me offering me his hand. I took it gratefully and smiled at him as we started walking off after the others.
We had made it out of the airport and were piling into taxi’s to take us to some part of town where Logan said he knew a place, I couldn’t stop myself shuttering at the thought of the this place since the last place we stayed at was spider infested and was worse than a sewer. Kyle said that we’d follow in another car since the other one was already full. The look exchanged between Logan and Kyle was one that could cut glass, but we continued anyways.
I looked over at Kyle and found the itch to bombard him questions return. Damn curiosity, it is literally going to be the death of me one day.
“Kyle can I ask you something?”
“Of course sweet girl”
“Do you know why Logan kidnapped me?”
He stopped and thought about it for a moment looking in deep thought “No, sorry. I’m not familiar with the Volucris plans.”
“And you’re here because Logan asked you come?” I asked trying to clarify.
“Yes, He called in a favour, said he couldn’t carry you all the way.” Yeah because he thinks I’m fat!
“You’re his friend?”
“Yes, I met Logan and Marco years ago when I went into the Underground for the first time, I was alone and had no idea what to expect. Logan and Marco had grown up in and out of that place so they knew it like the back of their hands. Their father was known as the King of the Underground, he was responsible for keeping the peace there and ensuring that no one harmed a human. I got into some trouble with the werewolves and Logan saved my life, I never really warmed up to Marco but him and Logan were fairly close growing up.”
“What happened?”
“When their parents died, Marco was outraged he left the Volucris and hid in the Underground and took over as their King and went after those who he blamed for his parents death but because he couldn’t be touched in the Underground, they took everything out on Logan.” That explained why Logan showed such hatred for Marco, he just left his brother there. How could you do that to someone?
“So his parents were murdered?” I seriously had problems and am in need of serious help when this is all over, where the hell is my brain to mouth filter these days? Probably on a Hawaiian holiday sipping pinna coladas on the beach.
“Well the official word was that their father had a hunting accident and fell off his horse, cracking his skull while his mother was said to have committed suicide.”
“You don’t sound like you believe it.”
“I don’t, no one really did. Their parents were like mentors to me, their father was the best hunter I knew, there was no way he would have fallen off his horse and as for their mother…” Kyle stopped a moment and I saw the sadness in his eyes as he recounted the memory. “She was the strongest women I knew and she would never have left those boys especially when Logan was only twelve.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to stir up old memories.” I quickly apologized and grabbed his hand hoping to reassure him. Kyle looked at me his purple eyes glistening with unshed tears.
“It’s fine sweet girl.” He smiled at me accepting my apology.
We climbed out of the car and started to walked down the pavement. My game of twenty questions was well and truly over as Kyle began to question me about my life. It turns out that he hasn’t spent so much time in the human world than what he has today, but unlike Logan it wasn’t because he doesn’t like the food.
It was a little hard to keep up with everyone so Kyle and I started to fall behind, which was mainly my fault since my feet killed and I was only a few steps away from asking him to carry me the rest of the way. We were on one of the streets and let’s just say that the few people we did pass had me clutching onto Kyle like he was a life line. I saw the others ahead of us stop outside an abandoned building and internally rolled my eyes. What was is with these people and things that are abandoned I mean seriously, what’s wrong with a five star hotel?
Kyle pushed back a piece of wood where the others had disappeared behind and I gladly squeezed under it. There was dust, spiders and god knows what else everywhere, this place was gross and made me want to go back to the woods and climb that o so comfortable looking tree Logan had offered me the other night.
Kyle walked over to a door that had some interesting patters etched in the wood. He ran the nail of his fore finger through some of the patterns leaving me to stare in awe. When he withdrew his finger he looked over at me and smiled while the door shook and rattled making the floor shake under me.
The patterns that Kyle had traced began to glow in an orange light before the door started to come apart and open letting us walk through. With my mouth hanging open at what I had just seen Kyle chuckled at me and then gently pulled me through the doors. I looked back seeing the door close behind me and fading into the wall, you would never have even noticed it before if I didn’t know it was already there.
“Took you two long enough.” Logan said clearly not bemused by our late entry.
“Sorry, Britney and I were just chatting.” Kyle smiled at me and bowed his head slightly before grabbing my hand and kissing it before letting go and turning around and walking over in the direction of his sister.
Logan came towards me and grabbed my bad off of my shoulder before walking off into a hallway that no doubtably had spiders. I looked at the others looking for some direction. Do I follow or not?
“That’s his way of saying, please follow me.” Lena said smiling at me and giggling to herself. I nodded noticing my surroundings for the first time.
The others sat on gold coloured couches with an open fire in the middle of it, blankets and pillows were scattered around the room while a broken stair case and old photos were the only other things I could make out in the room as the darkness lined the room.
Conner laid down asleep on one of the couches with his head resting on Lena, his face looking peaceful but still badly bruised. Kyle took a seat on the other side of the room and took out a dagger from his belt before he began turning it over in his hands, the silever coils around the hilt seemed to almost glow blue in his hands.
Taking a deep breath I let out a sighed and walked over to the direction I had seen Logan disappear into. Ignoring the creek in the floor boards I made it to the third door on the left where I saw a light and decided to open the door. Logan was pulling a sheet back off of the double bed that sat in the middle of the room that appeared untouched but yet well kept.
I walked further in and stopped in the middle putting my hands on my hips narrowing my eyes at him.
“Next time, you say ‘Britney if you would please follow me’ then I might know what to do” I told him earning an annoyed look from him.
“I’m not your servant.”
“I didn’t ask you to be, I’m just saying a little manners can go a long way.”
“Fine. Britney this is where you will be sleeping if you complain or whine in any way then I will take you out to the woods and tie you to a tree. Got it?” Well someone is having a bad night.
I shook my head in defeat at him and walked over to my bag that was on a chair near a mirror that was covered in a thick layer of dust. I turned around and watched as Logan finished fixing the bed and then storming off towards to the door.
“Thank you” I said to him as he was half way out of the door.
He looked at me for a long moment, his eyes holding an expression I couldn’t quite pin point but if I were to guess I would say it was sadness with a hint of regret but because of what I couldn’t even begin to fathom. It was late, that much I knew but no matter how much I tried to sleep I couldn’t. He shut the door slowly and I heard his distant footsteps walking away down the hallway. Pulling out some other clothes I quickly changed and climbed into the bed hoping to get some much needed sleep.
I was freezing cold and this bed was the most uncomfortable thing I had ever slept on but there was no way I was going to complain since I didn’t take Logan for the type to make idle threats.
