Chapter 23: The Camber has its Secrets

Chapter 23: The Camber has its Secrets

I haven't read over it so I apologise for the mistakes

"I still don't get it." I whined as I looked up at Logan. We were currently in the bedroom after Marco had 'dismissed' me and sent me to bed, I had protested but Logan had only agreed with his brother and hurled my butt out of there before I could dig my fingernails into the couch and get a decent grip. He walked into the room, kicking the door shut behind him and throwing me down on the bed where I still sat, my legs raised so that my feet were plastered on Logan's thigh allowing him to easily untie my shoe lasses and slip my feet out of their prisons.

He sighed deeply and focussed his eyes on me, his movements pausing briefly. "What don't you get?"

"Everything." The truth was I was just so overwhelmed. I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me and I didn't know what was real and what was fake.

"You heard everything Britney, I don't know how much clearer it could be."

"It's just..." I stopped, unsure of what it was I was actually going to say. "How could I be one of you?"

He looked at me in surprise but his expression quickly changed into one of hurt and contempt. "What's so bad about that?" His tone was threatening.

"No, I don't mean it like that Logan." I quickly defended myself. "I just... I feel like I don't even know myself anymore, it's like everything that I thought was true about the world or myself has just disappeared and I don't know how to feel. It's like a tsunami, earthquake, fire and volcanic eruption all at the same time and I'm stuck, motionless just waiting for the earth to crumble around me."

I put my head in my hands feeling the tears spring in my eyes and my heart start to hurt with the fast echoing beating and the sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach. "Hey" the soft touch of Logan's hands as he placed his hands over mine and bought them down away from my face. He was down on his knees resting just in between my legs with his face right next to mine and his hands slowly beginning to draw small eight figures on my palm in a calming motion.

Letting go of one of my hands he gently cupped my face and tilted it up until my eyes were focussed on his. "When the ground starts to crumble, all you have to do is reach out to me and I'll fly you so high the destruction will never touch you."

I sniffed and gave him a small smile at his sweet words.

"But what happens if you're not there when everything crumbles?"

"Then push through it. There is not a destructive thing on this planet that can get you to move." He smiled at me. "You're too stubborn for that." He chuckled at the last line.

"Hey, what happened to being sweet?" I pouted and narrowed my eyes at him.

"There's only so much sweet I can handle before I start yawning." He admitted as he reached up and kissed me, his lips were soft as they moulded to my puffy swallow ones. "Now stop talking and go to bed."

I sniffed up the last of my tears and rubbed my eyes as Logan pulled the blankets back and laid me down gently so that my rigid body could relax against the pillows and soft mattress. "Logan."

"Yeah?" he answered as he pulled the blankets back over me.

"Don't leave me." I reached out and grabbed his hand. "I don't want to be alone."

He paused, frozen to the spot as he fought with the decision. He turned his head and looked back at the closed door and then back at me, conflict written all over his features. He took a deep breath and nodded his head before sliding his body in the bed beside me, his strong arms reached out and wrapped around me to hold me close. The warmth radiating off his body was like a much needed warm blanket of comfort in a storm of uncertainty. He pressed his lips against my temple while I snuggled into him, my head resting in the crock of his neck.

"You're going to leave the minute I fall asleep aren't you?"

"Yes. I have things to organise" he exclaimed, "but I'll be back by time you open your eyes again."

I took a deep breath and felt sleep take me into the deepest darkest pits of the earth.

I woke the next morning to a loud commotion echoing in my ears. I sniffed and scrunched up my nose as I used my limited strength to pull myself up into a sitting position, my head spinning a little at the movements.

I listened for a moment, my ears focusing on the sound trying to decipher the noises while my attention was fully focussed – something that was rather rare for me, especially this early in the morning – but all I could hear were irritated mummers.

Frowning deeply I swung my legs around to the edge of the bed and tip toed towards the door. I placed my ear on the cool piece of wood but it didn't improve my hearing. Licking my lips and bitting down on my bottom lip I pulled the door open and started walking down the hallway, following the voices and listening intently as I neared them.

"How many?!" Marco's angry voice boomed through the hallway making me freeze where I stood. It was strange to hear him yell, to hear so much anger in his voice since he was normally so amused and entertained even in the face of his ultimate doom.

There some more mutters and I once again started to creep closer towards them. I stopped outside the study door where the voices where coming from, but the large, thick wooden door did wonders to keep me from hearing anything but the occasional illy placed word or anything of real importance.

I leaned my body against the door and pressed my ear up against it but before I had a chance to catch myself the door opened and I came tumbling down, falling flat on my face with a loud thud.

"Britney." Edward said as I looked up at him. He was the one whom opened the door and made me fall flat on my face.

"Ugh, a hand up would be most welcomed." I smiled up at him and reached up with my hand, gesturing for his help.

Edward smiled down at me and reached towards my hand to help me up. Getting to my feet I dusted myself off and looked down the room to see Marco, tense as he stood at a table with his hands planted firmly on the wooden table and Logan stood back, leaning against the wall with his hand up and covering his mouth, almost as if he was hushing himself.

"What's going on?" I questioned quietly as I started to walk towards Logan and Marco. I stopped just beside Marco, my head twisting so that I could try and get a look at what he was studying with such a death defying glare. I felt a hand lace itself in mine, catching my attention. Logan grabbed a hold of my hand and pulled me towards him and away from his brother.

"What's going on?" I repeated, quietly this time as he pulled me towards him.

"Call a meeting. I want everyone down in the camber in an hour." Marco commanded as he started walking off out of the door with Edward following close behind him.

I frowned in deep confusion. "Okay, start talking. Now."

Logan turned me to face him as moved my hands up to rest on his shoulders. "Remember how there was nothing really happening?" He started, his eyes staring into me.

"Yes?"

"Well things are happening. Marco sent out a warning to everyone above ground in the human realm telling them to get back below for safety reasons. He believed that the kingdom was too cowardly to hit directly at us, instead he would hit the others." He explained.

"And?"

"He was right. They attacked everyone with an opened portal, an entire pack of werewolves was saluted, women and children, everyone. Marco's angry, the people are scared. They don't know which way to run, stay here and risk being attacked or run and risk being attacked."

"So what now. What can we do?" I pressed, feeling the worry and uncertainty creep into my very being.

"We're holding a meeting and that should help calm everyone down, but I don't know what to expect. I haven't been on the receiving end on the kingdoms wrath for as long as Marco has." He shook his head and I could see the flash of worry in his eyes.

"Hey." I reached up and cupped his face in my hands, holding his face towards me. "It will be okay." I lied. "We'll figure this out. Together."

Logan led me out of the study and back towards our room, allowing me to get dressed before he led me down to the Camber – which was a large hall that was under the Underground, the large room took up the majority of the over land and had a collection of strong pillars to hold up the roof that had paintings all over the doom shaped roof. Logan had explained that this is where the people retreated to when war was at their doorstep or there was bombings on the lands above.

We walked into the room, Logan told me to keep my hood on as we took out seats in the middle of the room next to Edward. I looked around the room seeing that there were many different creatures around, mainly sat in groups, the werewolves sat in their packs and kept to themselves, the trolls stood up mostly with some exceptions and many warlocks wore their hoods over their faces. Marco sat on a long table that was up the front of the camber on a small stage where Logan had pointed put, sat all of the representatives for each creature.

I took a deep breath as the camber quieted down and Marco began talking. "You all know that there were some attacks on clans that lived by the portals edge. Many of you lost loved ones in the slaughter and I am truly sorry for that, but we must turn our attention towards more pressing matters. Our retaliation." The room started screaming as soon as his words died down. Many screaming for revenge, others screaming that we should scatter and a rare few screaming for Marco and Logan to just turn themselves in.

"Why would they want you to leave?" I whispered to Logan.

"Not everyone is happy that we have started a war. Most of the people who don't live in the Unground aren't as forthcoming towards us." He explained.

"It is not their fault!" Someone defended the brothers. He man stood up on his seat and looked around the room, he was a Vampire, that I knew, he had a light complexion and looked entirely human for the most part – maybe even a little attractive.

"Your right it's not. It's her. That pesky little human girl they stole from the Volcuris." A women said as she stood up and debated with the man. I swallowed hard as I looked over at Marco, he had palled slightly and I knew he knew what was coming.

"I say we give the girl back to them! End this war! No one wants fight and die because some selfish little human is scared of the things that go bump in the night!" Another man called out making the camber erupt into an accord of yes'.
