CHAPTER 4: I'M A MAN?! Part I
904 A.D. Tang Dynasty; Luoyang, Henan
Running steps echoed inside the central districts pagoda. Strong and strict orders were given along the way up the stairs of the grand building. Buddhist monks, and Taoist scholars watched, and listened the well uniformed guards that passed them by, taking care not to get in their way in scare of being struct by the energized deadly blades.
- Quick! He's at the top! Lord Zhu's orders were to capture him either dead, or alive. The thing all of you need to have in mind is that no matter what... You need to get the necklace back! WITHOUT HESITATION... STRIKE!
All answered general Fei Tzun in unison.
- YES SIR!
The pagoda was 443 meters high. It was a made of both wood, and symmetrically cut bricks piled strongly together for it not to fall. Its shape was that of a bamboo shoot, with carved out sides much like a lotus root, and with a metal lined top where lighting struck; also called the "evil quencher", because the energy of the strike was used to control the savage, or evil energies of the magical spiritual objects that were stored in the tower.
- Mmmm... Uhn... My head...
Stroking the back of her head, Pamella wined because of the pain that had woken her from her passing out. She could remember, she was moments ago at the museum's storage room, holding Hu Xián Lèng's necklace, and then in a flash all went black. It was cold, and it was difficult to breath because of the wind. Where was she? It was also very dark, the stars, and moon were the only things giving light other than four things; which appeared to be lamps, dangling from the base of a solid protrusion from the floor. Pamella needed to adjust her eyesight because of the low lighting, but it wasn't so bad; not as much as this headache she was having. After some moments of head massaging, and cursing, she felt something was off. If she wasn't in the museum anymore, how did she get here; where was this here anyways, and why did she had Hu Xián Lèng's necklace in her hands, and...
Wait a second...
- Why are my hands longer, and larger? I don't remember having long arms, and legs either... What's with this ruffled clothe and loose boots? Wasn't I wearing boyfriend jeans, and red sneakers?!
Each time her emotional state became more agitated, until she was on the verge of panicking.
- MY HAIR IS LONGER! WHY I HAD A HAIR CUT A WEEK AGO! WHERE ARE MY BREASTS, AND WHAT'S THIS WEIRD LUMP IN MY NEC... OW!
Ok... I will not touch that again...
- MY VOICE...
Pamella's voice wasn't as soft as it used to be, but her panicking time was over for now, because now she had to deal with the people who sprang open the only door that was in sight. The people who rushed and gathered in a semi-circle on her front and sides looked like they weren't there to help her out, and if they were, they weren't going to take her to a warm happy place. One of them appeared to be the leader, and he referred to her with authority.
- You! Hand over that thing you have in your hands at once!
He means this necklace?
- Stop spacing out! Hand it over!
As general Fei shouted in exasperation the last words, the group of guards closed in on her little by little. Pamella, getting nervous, but also thinking on how she dealt with situations not at all like this one, but similar in a way, or another, mustered up what was left of her braveness, ignoring the low pitched and hoarse voice that belong to her, but at the same time wasn't like hers.
- HEY! Tell your umm... guards to back off and I'll give it to you! We don't need violence if I'm willingly giving it to you... Right?
Clenching his teeth in a forced smile, the general answered,
- Who do you think you are to even suggest what to order to my guards? I could order you killed, and that would save me the time I'm wasting bargaining with a thief like you!
Pamella was trying so hard not to walk back away a little. Either way what she could see, was that falling from where she was standing, would result in her blood and brain painting the entrance of the place. She was in a really high place, and she never had vertigo, but tonight it hit her for the first time; so hard that it made her want to vomit. She gulped down her fear.
- What brought you to the conclusion that I am a thief?
Every time she spoke, she couldn't help feeling as if she was a character of an Asian action drama movie. Much like the Bruce Lee, and Jackie Chang's movies. A joke, but a cool... badass... joke.
- HAND IT OVER!
- HEY! I don't even know myself how this necklace ended up in my hands! What are you getting all worked out for?
The guards who were closing in before, stopped abruptly, and made the same puzzled face as the general. Who was this thief that used such strange words? And with that bought up time, Pamella grabbed the opportunity to look back down the tower. There she saw that if she jumped closed to the edge and grabbed hold of the lotus root building edges then she could slowly climb down without having to die on the hands of these idiots. She had never done it before, but she had seen people doing it on TV, only that... This was not TV...
- WHAT ARE YOU ALL WAITING FOR GO GET THAT NECKLACE!
Pamella, with a smile that showed her doubts,
- Sorry, but I'll have to take this pretty necklace with me!
And as the guards rushed towards her, she stuffed the necklace inside her top; ignoring the coldness the metal made when in contact with her skin, she grabbed the short base of the building top, and leaped down, while praying for dear life that she grabbed hold at the right moment.
Pushing the guards away from the boarder, the general looked down, and saw that Pamella, wasn't to far down. Pamella had achieved to grab hold, but she was petrified on the top first lotus root edge of the building.
I thought this was going to be easier, but... I can't make myself move!
The general gave out a chuckle and leaped with sword on hand as well. The menacing aura surrounding him was disturbing Pamella's concentration. Why did it take him nothing to walk on the building's edge, and here she was cowardly clenching at the bricked tiles?
This must be a dream. Yes! A dream, and if I let myself fall? In a dream I wouldn't get hurt... Right? If this is a dream, I won't die from falling, but... If it isn't? Oh god no...
- You must have low spiritual energy. So low you can't even fly down. Such a pain... Low lives like you are a pain. PATHETIC!
The general's sword started flaring with red light, and as the point of the blade stroked the top of the tiles, it gave out an annoying sizing sound. But what was mouth dropping was that it left a deep opened crack.
This is not... Good...
- Now stop trembling like a dog, and hand you, and the necklace over. With that we'll all be happy. You won't get killed... probably... And I won't get punished by my master. See the good in all this?
Yeah, that "probably" is the problem...
As Pamella was thinking on what to do, general Fei lost patience, and threw himself at her. This made Pamella instinctively move herself from where she was, but to her horror she slipped, and started to fall down at great speed. The general hizzed,
- Damm it! Dead, or alive? Dead it'll be then!
And with that, he ordered his guards to get back down and get the bastard.
