Chapter 41

Sasuke POV~

Well. It was one thing knowing that the Fourth Hokage was Naruto's father. It was another to actually meet the man knowing he was Naruto's father. I probably would've had more respect for him if I didn't know that fact.

I didn't know what to think of the man. I knew it was him who sealed Kurama within Naruto, which was probably the greatest mistake anyone has ever made. But he had to go and die and leave Naruto alone. Besides, if Naruto had been any less kind, and Kurama any less willing, their friendship might've never happened. If that were the case, Naruto would've been even more alone.

But, apparently, the Yondaime had sealed some of Kurama's chakra with him before he died, which was awfully convenient, considering the circumstances.

The Bijuu chakra bubbled up from his hand and sunk into Naruto. There was silence, then a sharp intake of breath as Naruto shot up from where he lay on the ground and gasped for breath.

I only had time to let relief wash over me when I got stabbed.

Naruto POV~

I don't know how long I floated in that endless darkness.

Time didn't exist for me. I swam in and out of consciousness, sometimes hearing snippets of voices, sometimes falling so deep that I was sure I was dead, only to be jolted back into the land of living again.

But then, sometime, somewhere in this endless black void, I sensed something.

The memories of this time were hazy, at best, but I remembered one thing so very clearly.

Hagoromo, the Sage of Six Paths, the man Kurama viewed as a father, was saying:

"I entrust everything to you."

Sasuke POV~

When I came to, I didn't remember anything except for black Zetsu appearing out of the ground and stabbing a hole through my stomach. The next thing I knew, I dropped into unconsciousness and awoke with my injuries intact but no longer serious.

I knew much of this was Sakura's work, and never was I more glad we kept her around, but another memory appeared from the depths of my mind.

Somehow, I knew without knowing. I knew. One look was all I needed to know that Naruto knew as well.

I stood, and he joined me.

Together.

Naruto POV~

I shot up. I remembered, vaguely, a man. The man Kurama spoke of so fondly.

I felt and looked unchanged. I glanced at my hands, my body. Nothing. I felt as if that whole conversation was a dream, despite knowing so completely that it wasn't.

I no longer felt like some important part of me was missing. The memories of what happened flew back to me, and, in a moment of desperation, reached within myself.

'Kurama?'

Bijuu chakra, so familiar, floated up from within me. "I'm here, Naruto. I'm here."

My tight throat was finally released then, and happiness and relief flooded into me. I couldn't help it. I started crying, the stress of the day finally hitting me. But he was back. Kurama was back.

His chakra was thick with emotion as well, bubbling up around me comfortingly. "I'm here. I'm back, Naruto. It's okay."

I was suddenly, blindingly aware that there were people here. And I must've been hallucinating some of them because the four previous Hokage were here too. My gaze landed on the Fourth and froze.

"They're real, kit. Supposedly, somewhere in the distance, Orochimaru happened to survive through a curse mark and released these four from the Reaper death seal."

'Holy shit.'

I blinked at him (still crying, almost forgot about that) and said, "Hi, dad." wow, my near-death must've completely obliterated my mouth filter.

He smiled at me, sad and small. "Hi, Naruto."

'So, he gave me the part of your chakra that he sealed with himself.'

"That's right. It's a good thing he arrived so fast. You might not have made it otherwise."

I nodded and stood.

"Sasuke!"

And that was Sakura's voice. I turned, only to see that Sasuke had been stabbed. By black Zetsu.

The little bastard.

"Well, well, looks like you managed to save him before I could get him. Pity." Black Zetsu drawled, slipping back into the ground and going back to Obito.

"Shit!" I stood, stumbling as I wave of dizziness crashed into my brain. The Yondaime, my fucking father, steadied me. Now that I was fully conscious, I was undecided between punching him and having a nice family reunion. I know he saved my life and all, but he kinda sealed a Bijuu in me when I was a baby and then got killed.

I realized I didn't really have to worry about Sasuke. Sakura healed his stab wound immediately, and he was on his feet in less than a minute. He glanced at me, an entire conversation exchanged between us in seconds, and we stood together.

It was time to end this.

There was a flash, a blur off to my side that I might not have noticed if I wasn't waiting for it, and suddenly the Yondaime (I've known he was my father for years, but somehow I still wasn't comfortable calling him that) was in front of Obito. A flick of a kunai, a spray of blood, and Obito dropped to the ground, no longer moving.

Sasuke and I flickered over to him. Kurama's chakra danced at my fingertips. I shuddered at the memory of it being sucked away. His chakra, strong and grounding, steadied me. The emptiness it left behind when it was gone was something I hoped never happened again.

Kurama's chakra as warm down to my bones. He rumbled slightly. He was there. And he was never leaving again.

We'll make sure of that.

We stood over Obito. This man had caused so much trouble for us. And now he just...lay there.

"Careful, Naruto. He took all the bits of Bijuu chakra you had and put them in the Gedo statue."

I twitched, 'Right.'

"If the Ten-Tails returns, it won't be as powerful without all of the full Bijuu inside, but it certainly will be a pain in the ass."

"Obito isn't dead yet, is he?" I asked.

The Fourth shook his head. "It's over now."

"No. It's not."

Before the implications of my warning set in, the ground beneath us rumbled.

"You're right. It's not." Obito's hoarse voice cut through the noise, and the Gedo statue began to shake as it rose.

"Shit!" I turned to Sasuke and the Yondaime and told them what Kurama told me.

"Well, fuck." was Sasuke's fitting response.

Tsunade POV~

It seemed there was much we were missing out on.

"Tsunade! You can't leave! If something happens to you, what would happen to Konoha?" Koharu was yelling.

"I agree. We need our Hokage." Homura joined in.

I ignored them, handing over the necessary supplies to Shizune. She could handle things while I was gone.

When they grew more insistent, I turned to them and said, "There is something going on. The battle with Tobi could lead to something as grave as the revival of the Ten-Tails. The other Kage and I have come to a decision to fight if need be. We are all going to meet at the battlefield where Naruto and our shinobi are fighting Tobi, and we will stop him. That's all we can do at this point."

"And if you die? Or become seriously injured? We need you at the village, Tsunade, and the Kage are needed for their villages as well."

I sighed, but I could understand their concern. Although I never got along with the council, and they didn't like me, I knew where their arguments were coming from.

"It is a Hokage's job to protect their village." I told them, "And in order to protect Konoha, and the whole of the shinobi world, we must stop the Ten-Tails from appearing. If we Kage don't go, and Tobi succeeds in bringing the Ten-Tails back, then our village will be in even more danger." I shook my head, "The decision is made. I entrust the village to you two and Shizune, for now."

They stared at me, watching as I gathered up the last of my supplies and made for the door.

"Take some of your best shinobi, Tsunade." Koharu called after me, "And take care of yourself. Protect everyone."

I paused, then closed the door on my way out.

I met up with the other kage, each of whom had several of their own shinobi with them, and we wasted no time in heading for the battle. We all brought jounin or ANBU or higher, and moved as quickly as humanly possible towards the fight.

We arrived within a mere hour, and there was chaos.

"It's already started." the Tsuchikage muttered.

There was a massive crash as the Ten-Tails, a deformed beast with pale brown, tree-like skin and writhing tails with limp hands on the ends, shifted backwards and knocked over an entire section of the forest. It's hand-like tails whipped back and forth, reckless and uncaring of the damage they were doing. It was huge, bigger than any one of the Bijuu, and so malformed that it was almost revolting.

"Baa-chan!"

I turned to Naruto's voice. He stood, blond hair ruffled in the wind and his slightly-tattered black cloak rippling around him.

"Could you help us hold the Ten-tails back? I need to get to Obito!" he called.

"Obito?"

He blinked, then shook his head, "I mean Tobi. Obito is his real name. I need to get to him."

I shrugged. Who was I to question him? "We'll support you."

He grinned and turned away, golden chakra leaking through to surround him. "Sasuke?"

Sasuke flickered over beside Naruto. He was surrounded by his purple Susanoo. Then Naruto rose higher, the golden chakra lifting him far above the rest of us and forming a massive fox around him. Amazingly, Sasuke's Susanoo grew as well, and covered the fox's avatar like armor.

I watched, astonished at the way their power fit together seamlessly, how easily they worked together and combined their strength.

I turned to the other kage, and nodded. They nodded back, and we jumped into the fray.

Naruto POV~

"Let's go."

With Sasuke providing the ultimate defense, we leapt right into an attack. I had to get to Obito.

I knew Sasuke was watching my back, so there was no need to worry about that. I charged straight ahead, diving straight towards the rising Ten-tails without stopping. I dove under lashing spikes and hands, whipping forward multiple chakra arms to clear a path for myself.

"What are you going to do?" Sasuke asked from where he was beside me.

I had no idea. But I wasn't going to say that. "I'm going to stop Obito."

"How?"

"I'll talk to him."

Sasuke narrowed his eyes at me incredulously. "Really? Talk to him?"

"I'll work something out. Obviously beating him up didn't change his mind. But I don't want to kill him. He's in pain, Sasuke. Somewhere in that brain of his he really doesn't believe in what he's doing, but he's searching for something to make himself happy again and here we are. If I kill him, we save the world but we don't save Obito."

AN~

I am not doing that Ashura and Indra thing, with the reincarnations and Kaguya. The appearance of the Sage of Six paths only happened because both of them were on the verge of death.

Also, on the topic of Orochimaru, we won't be seeing much of him. In canon he revived the Hokage because of Sasuke, but Orochimaru is a big boy who can make his own decisions. Supposedly.
