Chapter 3

"Do you know whats wrong with him Doctor?" a woman asked. Concern laced her voice.

She had a baby swaddled up and hugged against her chest. He struggled, his tiny limbs waving in the air. He sneezed once ,twice, three times.

" We have one guess. It's not a final diagnosis, but we think that your son is allergic to animals"

" ALL animals?" she asked in horror. The doctor nodded and pushed his glasses  up higher on his nose.

" Yes. He has a very sensitive respiratory system and  a single hair will cause a reaction." The woman seemed not hear him but instead brought her son closer to her chest, shielding him from the doctor as if this would protect him.

" T-that's absurd!" She screamed ," How? How could that ever be possible?"  The doctor, once again, adjusted his glasses and looked down at his clipboard. " After all the test we've taken on him plus the information you've provided us, it  is the only explanation."

The woman backed up a little, still in shock. The doctor took this opportunity to speak again.

" His spirit animal hasn't shown up yet, correct?" She nodded. " And he is not sick. So we've decided to put him in quarantine for a few days while he prescribe him some medication.  We'll contact you and your husband if anything changes." He started to walk through the door when the woman finally snapped out of her trance.

" Wait! Is it too late for his animal to arrive?" The doctor turned slowly on his heel and looked at the woman with a peculiar expression on his face.  He sighed.

" Technically, no. But this is still a really old age for a child to be without a spirit animal."

She seemed to be lifted slightly. " Please", she begged " just a while longer!"

The doctor rolled his eyes. The woman payed no mind. " Fine.  You have 2 weeks. If his spirit animal doesn't come in that period of time, we're putting him in quarantine and he will have to wear a mask. Also he will be prescribed medicine that he will have to take twice a day. It wont fix the allergies completely, but it will make him less miserable"

" Thank you so much Dr. Lester."

The woman took her baby and left.

"Mommy, what's wrong with that boy?"

Casper heard it everywhere. He didn't understand what was wrong with him. He heard his mother and father fighting at  night.

" it's not my fault he has this-this disease!"

Was it bad to not have a spirit animal? What did his father mean when he said disease? Was it strange to wear a mask? These questions haunted him every day. He knew he was different. He just didn't understand why that was bad

Casper was in 2nd grade now. He was used to the stares and the whispers. But he wasn't used to what was happening now.

He was shoved to the ground by a fifth grader. " watch where you're going, Weirdo!" His nose started to bleed and soak through his paper mask. He brought his hand up and touched the wet spot. As the fifth grader walked past their wolf jumped on Casper.

Casper started to cough and it wouldn't stop. He started to freak out.

Why wouldn't  it stop!?!

He quickly ran to the bathroom. He dug through his backpack until he found what he was looking for. He popped a pill into his mouth and took a deep breath.

In, Out

He grabbed an extra mask, and with great care and speed he swapped it with the bloody one that was on his face.

Everything was fine.

He walked back to class where everyone was coloring pictures of their favorite animal. That made Casper want to cry, but he grabbed a crayon and started to draw. He drew a beautiful paradise that was covered in plants. In the middle was a cat looking a thing that was pink and had horns. There was a mixture of stripes and polka dots on it's fur. The teacher walked around the class, admiring the animals that everyone drew. They were all sensible animals: a lizard, a giraffe,a tiger. When the teacher got to Casper, she looked shocked for a second.

" uh, what animal is this Casper"

" I dunno"

" well why is your favorite?"

" because it's not real"

" I don't think you understood the assignment. You had to draw your favorite animal."

" No, I understood you"

" aren't you a little old for an imaginary friend Casper?"

" I don't think you understand. It's my favorite because it's not real. It's the only animal that can be my favorite. The one that doesn't exist"

She nodded as if she understood. She walked to another student. Casper sighed. Was it really that hard to understand?

A/N

Hiya! This is another chapter! Yay! This was a flashback. I think I'm going to alternate from now on. Like one chapter in  the present and the next one as a flashback of when he was younger. I hope more people read this story because I really like writing it! Anyway, I shall fare thee well and have a fabulous day!
