Hunters
Blood had a tangy kind of smell I guess. It smelt of rust, of iron. And it was exactly what the figure waking beneath me smelt like.
Standing on the rooftop of the warehouse that was packed in between the shabby apartment buildings, I had a clear view of him. I was in the Raìdo District, of course everything around me would be shabby. This place was home to the gangs and thugs who were mere jokes and cheap imitations of the real thing. The real mafia and Underworld bosses lived in Muerte district. They didn't bother with the small fry and wannabes here.
I crouched, my muscles tensing, waiting for the exact moment to strike. That's when they showed up. The fuzz. Their light blue uniforms stood out even in the dim light of the alleyways. The surround the man who smelt of blood from all sides. They aimed their guns at him.
I scoffed. A lot of good a bullet would do.
"Mr. Robert James," the man turned jerkily towards the speaker as he recognised his name. "You are charged with breaking the rules of The Treaty signed by councils of both races. It clearly states that as a vampire you are not allowed to kill in order to feed on blood. There were means given to you which you could've used but you refused. We are obligated by the law of both councils to bring you in for trial."
The vampire looked at them and showed them his blood stained hands. His fangs glinting in the flickering light even though they were mostly covered in blood. He flexed his fingers, his nails elongated and becoming sharper than knives.
"Idiots," I said. There was no point in talking to the vamp. He was already at the Bloodlust stage. Looking directly at their commanding officer. Though his speech had been confident, all it had been was a ruse in order to mask his true anxiety. It was his first night on the job, obviously he would be nervous. But he had good reason to be, he wouldn't last another two minutes.
He lunged towards them. His nails raking through their flesh followed by screams of agony.
I clicked my tongue in annoyance. They didn't follow the plan.
I jumped from the rooftop, the night air rushing against my skin electrifying me with adrenaline. Landing in a crouched position right in front of Robert, his eyes widened when he noticed the change in atmosphere. Everything faded away until there was only me and him in a dark void.
Raising my gun, I aimed it his head and fired. He dodged and disappeared from view. So, he was one the faster psychopaths, was he. He reappeared behind me and I turned in time to see his smile fade at the sight of my dagger.
The bullet wouldn't have had any effect on him, he dodged it only because he knew it would hurt like hell. The knife, on the other hand, would be enough to kill him and in the most painful way possible.
Running the blade across his throat, the blood spilled out in irregular spurts. My white uniform turning red as it became stained with blood. I reached in to my holster and took out the real gun. The one made for killing vampires. The it shined silver in the darkness.
He looked at me with eyes filled with hate.
"Hunter," he gasped out.
I smiled at him.
"Scum," I said in return.
I aimed the gun at his chest, directly above his heart and fired. The gunshot hung in the air and the darkness started to fade away, showing the alleyway I had been in before. There was nothing left of Robert except a pile ash which was now where he had stood before.
I turned and walked away. Pierce would soon come and clean up this mess. Anything that showed evidence of The Treaty being violated was immediately destroyed in order to keep the peace. My job as a hunter was thankless and I was hated by both vampires and humans alike. They didn't know of the constant danger is was in to try and keep their lives comfortable.
And if all went well, they would never know.
