🍂 Chapter 4 🍂

Unedited

Wednesday

6:45 am

Kilahi looked into the mirror unsure of the blue shirt and black skirt she wore, "Doesn't this make me look like I'm going for choir rehearsals" She asked and Sewuese hissed, "This is a blue chiffon top not cotton shirt, it's fine on you. You look smashing"

"If you say smashing again, I'll smash your head"

Seweuse laughed, "Oh please do cause I'll say it again and again"

"Are you sure?"

Sewuese's phone buzzed and Kilahi ended the call for her, she has been in charge of the phone all morning in other to ignore Jamal's call. "Rubbish! Let him stop calling you already, it's finally over, let him get used to it" She complained now picking a perfume from the dresser table staring into her reflection.

Then she exhaled in anxiety. "Lord help me. Sewuese, Help me order the ride with your phone, there's no network on my phone" "Give me my phone" She stretched her hands and Kilahi handed it to her.

"I just hope they'll be going my way. I can't afford to go late" She lifted her arm spraying the perfume underneath her armpit.

The phone buzzed and Sewuese answered, "Hello, can't you see that I'm trying to avoid you?" "Well, you're not trying hard cause you finally picked"

Kilahi glared at her, "You shouldn't have picked" "I'll end this call" Sewuese threatened but he begged, "Don't! Please, I'm sorry, i know I went overboard, you know I can be a mumu sometimes but you know I'm more mumu for you than any other person. You drive me crazy dear"

She blushed switching position in bed while Kilahi shook her head, "I don't like position, before you know you'll say something like" "You drive me crazy too, literarily Jamal,"

"I knew it! It's over!" She gave up picking her hand bag.

"Babe, i'm tired of our arguement. I know I messed up by not seeking your consent but you too, you never agree with me on any thing. Come for Duro' wedding, you didn't. Let's get married, no!"

"Can we not do this again? I called to apologize. I'm sorry okay? I'm tired too, let's have dinner tonight"

"At your place?"

"No. Outside, am i forgiven?" "Only if we won't even go home, no sex, just us" "No sex, just us"

Sewuese giggled, "Okay. You're forgiven" "Everytime! Every single..." Kilahi rolled her eyes. "Do and order ride, my network is down, will you on hotspot for me?" She asks but Sewuese giggled handing a hair brush to her.

"Don't be silly Jamal"

"Who asked this one for hair brush?"

Hilary's sat in the BRT listening to music on her airpods when an Albino guy sat close to her, "Ebony, good morning" "Good morning Oyinbo" She replied ignoring the fact his breathe was like something out of the garbage bin!

Please don't speak again! She begged within.

His gaze pervertly fell on her laps. "You fine oh"

And he spoke!

The funny thing was that the guy wasn't even looking at her face when he said it. His attention was on her lap, full time! Not a second did he look away.

"Oga na my leg fine or na my face fine, which one?"

His gaze now flickered up to her face, "All of them" so she cleared her throat, she knew his kind of person, chop and run association of Nigerian. Wrong timing bro!

"You dey go work?"

"Yes" Tears was almost coming out of her eyes, oga just leave me alone!

"You single?"

"Yes and I'm not searching"

"Ehn hen? Why?"

Did this guy leave his house that morning or did he sleep in the bus? Cause she just couldn't understand how someone's mouth can smell so bad.

"Because, I want to be single"

"Well, good news, I no want make you single again. God don send your future husband come"

Hilary raised her brows, "Eweh! Who?" "Me" "With all due respect, I am not up for that" "Why? You no like albinos?" "No!" She shut her eyes then she opened it, "I'll never mock a person because of his natural features. God created you this way so who am I to throw insults at you?"

The atmosphere between them was beginning to smell like all those garbbage trucks from Lawma. It was almost as though her mouth has been infected too. How is she sure it won't have the same effect on her body

"Eh hen now, you na good woman. I for like marry you"

"I'm not interested"

The man placed his hands on her lap, "I for like carry you go house" "Mister man" She snapped taking the hands off, "You're are clearly molesting me in this bus, I can have you reported"

"For what?"

"Invasion of privacy? How about that? Maybe you got the picture wrong but here I am telling you No! If you've met girls that followed you to their houses, well I'm not one."

"You for no like kiss me?"

"Kiss who? Oga, you have overtstayed your welcome, come dey go"

"On top my money"

"I go shout rape oh!"

"Rape oh! This woman one rape me!" He screamed and everyone turned back at the both of them.

Hilary scoffed, there are only 1.2% sane people in Lagos, and this man is about to find out she's not apart of them!

"Who? Me?"

"Make una face una business jhoor! The man dey jonz!" A guy shouted now staring at the man, "Were! No be you been dey try toast am now now now. Babe no gree, you come dey shout rape"

"Thank you!" She snapped with so much gratitude in her heart! She didn't even mind that the guy had been eavesdropping on their conversation.

The man hissed rising up, and hanging on to the hand rail. "Woman way I wan try help her life" "How Oga? When you've clearly not helped your life" "At least I go marry you, see as you old pass my Mama"

"I'm sure your mother must be proud of you" She answered saractically then she purposed in her heart to avoid his rants!

"See as you fat scatter for ground, if this bus start to shake now, na you we go commot before we gain balance" He joked and some people chuckled.

"Wow. Coming straight from an Albino that has his own flaws but I'm not going to stoop low to insult you, 1. I'm a Christian, two, I know what the difficulty in the country does to an average Nigerian but since you're interested in helping people, why don't you help us and get a toothbrush and toothpaste for a change? And stop spilling garbbage breathe everywhere or better yet, see a psychiatrist for your problem or a dentist. Shikina!" She snapped and the guy who intervened on her behalf whistled annoyingly.

"It's over!"

This was followed by a long silence from the Albino guy.

Her ring tone, Uyo Meyo echoed in the bus so she quickly answered the call on seeing it was Manny. "Good morning to you" She sounded lively, "Good morning. You sound cheery" "I am, it's a beautiful morning, I'm on a BRT, on my way to work. I didn't even need to struggle to get in. Surprisingly, there was no queue.

"Wow"

"And for the first time in a long time, I don't feel like crap and I'm not going to let anyone make me feel like crap"

"That's good. I'm proud of you"

"Thank you. Really Manny, thank you for yesterday. It's so nice to have someone you know you can talk to, not like I don't have people, my friend Cornelius tries his best but he's on the fat side too so.... I usually don't pay attention to him but having someone like you..." She trailed off.

"I feel like I just found a therapist in whom I can confide in, you're better than a hundred of therapist"

"Please! Don't exagerrate it"

"I am not! I feel encouraged okay? Even when this albino guy I met ten minutes ago tried to make me feel bad about my size, I stood up to him. I mean, unlike him I can see clearly both in the morning and noon"

Manny chuckled, "You didn't say that to him right?" "Of course not! I told him to help himself and everyone around him by getting a toothpaste" She groaned and he busts into laughter, "That's mean"

"It's bad enough that I was the one enduring his smelly breathe all the while he was trying to toast me, yet this guy had the nerves to tell me he wanted to help me, and he started shouting rape"

"Wait... What? I don't think this is a gist you can give me on phone. Let's meet up again today"

"This just asserts my opinion that men gossip more than women! Aproko is in you guys gene. The Amebo nature in men ehn... Look at how interested you are in the gist. Well, i'll be free this evening, will that be fine by you?"

"Only if you take back what you just said now"

Hilary smiled, "I'll take It back when I see you in person, how about that huh?" "Sounds like a deal. See you in the evening, same place" "Sure"

Revive Foundation

Kilahi arrived at the organization at about 8:23, there were ten people waiting at the lobby, she wasn't sure whether they were all applicants or not. "Good morning" She greeted and a few replied so she sat close to a woman who had purdah on.

"Good morning" She greeted turning towards her, "I hope I'm not late, Lagos traffic is something else. Are you also here for the interview?" She asked and the woman nodded.

"Goodluck. It's like we are much, how many post are available? Ignore me, of course you can't know that. But do you know if they've submitted anything? CV copies, I came with all my documents oh, even if they ask for my birth certificate, I'll shock them with it"

The woman laughed and she laughed too, "It's absurd but we need to be ready for any kind of weather. The only thing I did not bring is umbrella" She joked and she laughed again.

A woman walked close to the secretary, "Is Mrs Aisha not around?" "No, I'm sorry. Just wait a little more, it's strange though, she's always early but let's wait. If she doesn't come early, Aunty Abebi will attend to you Ma. Do you want to file a complaint?"

"Yes."

The secretary handed a form to her, "Do well to fill the form Ma, you'll be attended by one of the admins" She answered politely then she looked at the others.

"If you're not here for interview, if you have a business that doesn't deal with seeing Mrs Aisha Bakare in person, please come forward"

A man and a woman walked up to her and another girl lifted her hands, "I'm waiting for my sister oh" "I know Suliat"

Kilahi observed the rest people left for the interview. Seven? Eweh! This life is a freaking marathon, everyone running towards a prize but there can only be one winner.

"I'm here to see Mrs Aisha personally" An older woman said and Kilahi exhaled in relief.

Six applicants!

When it was thirty minutes past nine, applicants started grumbling while the secretary tried her best to calm them down, "Just have some patience" She tried calling Mrs Aisha's number but the number was switched off.

"We've been here since two hours ago oh. Shebi you guys told us to come one hours before time"

"Abi oh"

"Mrs Aisha doesn't take this long to resume"

"Maybe she got held up in traffic. I was held up because a truck that spoilt at the round about, the Lasma guys were not doing anything. People had to come out of their cars to control the traffic, let's have patience" Kilahi chipped in and two angry faces descended on her.

"Abeg! When did you come that you're shouting have patience? I'm sure you ate till your satisfaction before coming so Madam, just keep quiet"

Kilahi scoffed, "We all know how Lagos traffic is" "Why didn't she leave home early? Abi it's only us that can leave early, they had the guts to write, it's preferably to come one hour before the interview, abi how did they put it sef in the nonsense email, while she stays at home. How much will they even pay that I'm wasting my time here? I don't blame her, hm hm" She shook her head, "I blame Nigeria!" She snapped leaving and a lady laughed.

"One down, more to go. You guys should all vex and go, let me know that I'm the only applicant left. My name is Wunmi by the way, the one this organization has been waiting for. You all are just waiting your time"

The secretary got a message from Aunty Abebi to start the interview so she looked down at her notepad, "Adepoju Omowunmi can please go in"

The lady clutched her bag cat walking towards the secretary, "Where's the office?"

Hilary twirled around her chair happily and her colleague at the cubicle close to her watched her, "This one you're happy like this? You win lottery?" "No. I feel this breath of fresh air"

"Depression is a bitch! See as you're smiling today. Other days if I ask you question, you'll be Ignoring me. I'm sure it's because of man. It's always man. God when oh? When will your wedding come sef?" The lady asked and she rolled her eyes, "Uju!" "Since you got engaged not, time is ticking" "Are you my mother? You're not even married yourself"

"Me I'm still young"

"Wonders will never cease"

Uju stretched her head to Hilary's cubicle to have a peek at her fingers, "How far? Why are you not putting on your ring?" "This one you're bombarding me with questions like this"

"Answer now"

"Avoid me"

Uju laughed, "Your favourite show is about to start" "I know" She blushed, "The way this your Manny dey make you laugh like say you dey see am for reality" "I met him yesterday"

Uju gasped, "Are you serious? How? Like you saw him when he was buying fuel from filling station, was it a drive by or something?" "No. We spoke, he's just as he is on radio, he's open and nice. There aren't many good men in the world these days so.... I appreciate him"

"Let your future husband hear you! He'll just collect his ring back."

Hilary laughed nervously, ring that he collected already! Then she plugged airpods into her ears now tuning to the radio frequency. The radio station was on an MTN commercial break. "It's a beautiful morning again, another morning to be grateful to God for mercies. How was your night? Cause my night was sound, although not at first cause I was having a disturbing thought process. What about yours Geena?"

"Mine was great, I'll say. I went for the opening of a friend's club, Dremo was there, he performed. It was massive, I really enjoyed myself, I left, got stuck in traffic!!! Urgh! It will be a dream come true to go a day without traffic. There I saw a girl who needed help, apparently the police arrested her boyfriend, she was assualted by two police men."

"Police men?"

"Yes. That was her testimony. She even had minor injuries. She had no cash. I decided to assist her drive her to a nearby place"

"You did that?"

"I won't do it on a normal day cause the world is not safe but there was just something that kept bothering me"

"I understand"

"As risky as it was, I dropped her at the nearest bust stop. I arrived home at 2:20 am or so and I'm here, the hustle continues"

Manny laughed, "People are going through things, trending news here and there" "Exactly!" "So guys.... I'll like to have your opinion about this cause I've been so angry. I was having a chat with a new friend I made, she had this so called Christian brother as a fiancee who wants sex but she wasn't ready to give in."

Hilary frowned, "It can't be my story.... Manny possibly can't do that" She muttered.

"This guy went to the extent of pretending to be sick so she can come over"

"What a pervert!"

"She did and that was when he started making the move" "I hope this doesn't end in rape"

"Thank God it didn't. He got angry because of her refusal, he then went forward to call her fat, that he was just managing her" "Oh, how convenient, why are guys like this?"

"Don't generalized, not all guys. She then slapped him, he slapped her back."

"She should sue the guy's ass!"

"Being devastated and depressed about being called fat, she almost committed suicide"

"Oh... The lady who called the other day..."

"I was so angry yesterday at how some of my specie can be so irrational so I'm here to say stop it! Stop body shaming! If you know you're not into fat or thin people, don't date them! Don't start something you can't finish. If you're friends with someone who's fat or slim, don't make stupid comments to make the feel more depressed. You think theyre just mere yabbing, i want to educate you say e get some kind yabbing wey fit put person for depression way compliments no fit remove. Una hear?"

"Gbam! That's it, he had to rephrase In pidgin. Have you guy heard?"

Uju gazed at Hilary, "That's you right? All these radio presenters sef! Their own is to be carrying someone's story up and down"

Hilary took off the airpods, took her phone and left her seat angrily.

Manny continued, " The funny thing is that she doesn't look that fat, she's pretty and has a lovely smile" Uju removed the earpiece, "He said you have a pretty smile, this one go enter another depression again"

Hilary sobbed in the toilet, "Look at me thinking he cared. He only wanted to use me! That was the only reason he spoke to you Hilary" She said looking into the mirror. "What were you thinking of Hilary? I'm tired of having hope, I'm just so tired!" She picked her phone dialing his number and he answered.

"Talk about the devil. I'll call you back, it's just a quick commercial"

"How dare you?"

"What? Are you okay?"

"Who gave you the right to tell the story to the world?" "Oh. Wait, is this why you're sounding this way? Hillary I'm sorry, I just wanted to get people's opinion, I still feel your should sue him"

"You could have told me first this is my life and you promised you weren't going to tell anyone"

"Chill! No one knows it's you. Not like I posted pictures of you. Don't get angry over this, we'll talk later. Remember we have plans"

"Just when I thought I have found someone I can confide in, thanks for correcting my notion. " "Hillary you're taking this thing far"

"Far?"

"Yes! This is just a misunderstanding, I'm sure it's all in your mind cause you're so used to being alone and seeing everyone has an enemy, you're trying to paint me as one when I'm just a friend!"

"You're not a friend, no. I'm just an avenue to make news to tell to your listeners. You men, you're all the same! Goodbye Manny," She snapped hanging up then she blocked his number.

Geena who had been stalling at the studio signalled to Manny who was by the door. "Shit!"

Aunty Abebi☝

Kilahi stared into the eye of her interviewer in fear, the woman looked scary. "Are you here for choir rehearsals?" She asked and Kilahi cleared her throat regretting Sewuese's choice.

Smashing my foot!

"What do you want?" "Huh?" "What do you want?" "I want...a job" "This job?" "Yes Ma"

Which one again??

"How badly do you want it?"

"Are these new interview questions? I've rehearsed the ones from you tube"

"Okay... Can we meet you"

"My name is Kilahi Agbo, I studied Philosophy in"

"Let me guess, Law didn't work out so you had to settle"

"No. It was Mass communication"

"So, you're wise like this"

"I am not... I don't see myself as wise"

"And you studied philosophy"

"But Ma, how does it relate to the job?"

"Are you trying to say i'm stupid?"

"No ma. Chei! I can't say that"

"What are your prospect in life?"

"To...." She paused in thought, anxiety and fear had clouded her thoughts, "All I want is to be what God said I'll be when I was a child" "And that will be?"

"Someone great, an helper, a pillar" She scoffed, "The truth is that, life hasn't been that way"

"Yes because that's how shitty life can be. It looks like it holds great promises but trust me, it doesn't get better than this especially when you have big dreams but I'll advise you kill the dreams before it ends up killing you. Take it from someone that has been there"

"Is the work not good"

"Who's talking about work here? You come here to see people come to you with their pathetic life to make it less pathetic, life is a shithole and we all are going to enter the hole one after the other" She blinked her tears in while tears ran down Kilahi's eyes.

"That's Enough! Go straight to the interview question, Ba Masala ( all these are unnecessary!)" Aisha shouted from the airpods in Aunty Abebi's ears, "Why do you think we should give you this job?"

"Apart from the fact i need to make endsmeet for myself, I love humanitarian services"

"Have you been involved in any?"

"During university days and my service year"

"Any notable one? For any company?"

"No."

"What are your weaknesses?"

"I am emotional, I hate my body, I don't appreciate my body. In 2006 I had an accident, i lost my parents, lost blood and had scars. The scars are healed but the everyday scar people inflict, opens up the scar and it hurts"

"Have you done anything stupid like having a sex tape"

"No, but i tried commiting suicide once"

Aunty Abebi scoffed not saying a word but she wrote quickly on a document, 'Not qualified'

Aisha watched Omowunmi's interview while Abebi grinned with pride, "She did exceptionally well"

"Over the years, I've learnt to overcome my fears and use them to my advantage."

"Have you ever done humanitarian work before?"

"Yes. I can't count Ma"

"Any notable one?"

"NICC feed the girl Child programme 2019, UNICEF voluntary programme in Anambra 2019 still. I also assisted in feeding the homeless during the corona out break too, inrespective of the virus, I worked together with the United Force for Healing, UFH, towards ermm.... Making sure those that couldn't go out to work were fed"

Abebi smiled, "She deserves the job" "Oh please! She's just a proud bitch" "Really? Baking ha ( From you lips?)" What's bad in being proud about what you know?" "I don't want another Freeda walking around here, you handpicked Freeda, look at where that has gotten me? She followed the other party because of the forth coming election and it has put me in a bad position. I got a message this morning, she's saying things I did not do to water their mouth"

"Wunmi is not Freeda, she's my friends daughter,"

"And Freeda was what? Your enemy's daughter"

"I already assured Doyin that I'll get her the job" "So you made that poor girl's interview difficult"

"No! The girl is clearly a mess, you cant have someone who hasn't cleaned her cobwebs to be dealing with other people's own. The girl has emotional disturbances"

"Reminds me of someone I know. She's sweet though, while others were complaining about my lateness, she was the only sticking up for me. Your Wunmi looks manipulative"

"So? That's life, it's a big fish eat small fish world" Abebi rolled her eyes, "It's Wunmi or no one" "It's my organization and I call the shots"

"Are you going to choose the girl who almost committed suicide over the one that has worked with unicef. Her CV is rich, not as deficient as that one, the girl herself is looking like she needs food. We can give her send some snack to her home address afterwards"

"Really? Big sis, really?"

Kilahi bumped into Temi on her way, "Hey dear, are they done?" "Yes. They say we can leave" "How was it?" "Horrible, I was nervous, the interviewer kept asking weird questions" "Weird questions, why will Mrs Bakare ask weird questions?"

"Oh, she wasn't the one who conducted the interview. It was one Mrs Abebi, I think"

Temi rolled her eyes, "Wow, really?" "Yes but it's fine. I'll wait, if I don't get called up, it's fine. Thank you for having me in mind" "Sure. Take care dear" She replied and Temi walked into the organization angrily.

"Where's Mrs Bakare?"

"In the office"

"Aunty Abebi?"

"She just left the office"

"Better" She snapped making her way to the office, she knocked and pushed the door open, "Good morning Ma" "Good morning Temi, how are you doing?" "Fine before I heard Aunty Abebi was the one that conducted the interview. Why will you do that? She'll only do it in favour of who she wants and it's not fair. This is a humanitarian organization not a political one!"

"She's my elder sister and you know with the whole polygamy issue we're dealing with, I don't want to piss her off. I worn a costume, just to test the applicants. She passed, she's nice. If I hire her, Aunty Abebi will make her life a living hell and I can't exactly fire my own blood"

"I've never known you to be partial"

"Exactly. See, Kilahi failed the interview woefully, she was too honest, can you believe she said she almost committed suicide?"

"She did?" She asked, this only confirmed their suspicion yesterday.

"Aunty Abebi's choice has a lot of experience and she was really confidence even though I don't like her. Her pride is too much, I'm looking into the matter, making further investigation so... If truly Wunmi has all these experience she claims she has, I'll have no choice, I'm sorry"

Aunty Mabel walked into the living room from work, "Sewuese! Kilahi!" She called out and they ran out to meet her, "Ma? Sewuese is not back, she has a date with Jamal"

"Seriously? I thought it was going to end yesterday and I prayed oh"

"We were both disappointed Aunty"

"Adiya is getting married" "Diya?"

Diya was her cousin, she practically saw when they gave birth to her!
"Isn't she like 14 years old?" Kilahi asked, "23" Aunty Mabel corrected and then she laughed knowing how horrible that side of the family was, "Dan boro uba.... Our life is about to get more miserable. Aunty Crystal will start bragging about how her children have all gotten married and made it in this life. I better get myself a gun to defend the last shred of my low self esteem"

Aunt Mabel rolled her eyes, "Not if i beat you to it. Get ready guys, we have a wedding to plan for" "So we're all just going to travel to Benue?" "Yes!" "Okay.... What if I get employed? I can't start giving excuse"

Aunty Mabel gave it a thought, "There's flight" "Flight is for the rich now oh, 88k na beans? From here to Abuja oh" Sewuese complained. "Wait, that's true. When the time comes, we'll jump that bridge. How was your interview"

Kilahi covered her face in shame, "Don't ask, it was horrific! It was a horror movie and I'm not exagerrating" "That bad?" "I don't want to recount." Her phone rang and she answered the call, "Hello good evening" She said, "Good evening Ma, am I speaking with Miss Kilahi Agbo?"

"Yes Ma" "Oh. Great! My name is Mrs Damilola Martins, calling from the HR department of Chrisland college"

"Oh" She paused in disappointment.

"Can you teach, CRS and Literature?"

"Huh... Kind of"

"Will you be available for an interview""

"Yes Ma"

"Great. Tomorrow by 8 then"

"Ma? Tomorrow?"

"Yes tomorrow? Don't you want a job? I was just looking through submitted CVs and yours called out to me" "Okay Ma"

Deja walked into the sitting room holding a car key up, "Guess what?" "What?" "I'm holding a car key up, what do you think?" "You sometimes drive your mother's car?"

"Bolo! I got a new car!"

"Who?"

"Wura ati fadaka, have you gone deaf? I got a car"

Bimbo scratched her neck, "Sorry, all the generator I've been hearing throughout the whole day has blocked my ears, it's like I think I heard you say, you got a car. If you notice I said it's like cause I don't want to believe it's true"

"It's true. I'm a big girl, I cannot be collecting Mom's car everytime"

"You cannot be... The rent kor? It expires in July, you might be looking at it pe July is far but before you blink your eyes you'll see yourself in December! Babe! I've been talking about contributing towards the rent, I've been doing my own part"

"I'll just ask mom and Dad as usual"

"And you say they will not have hypertension? Not like your parents are Rich like that yet you're sucking life out of them because you're the only child" "Are you going to rejoice over my happiness or not?"

"No cause the rent is not going to pay itself, so it's me that doesn't like soft life abi?"

"Why are you talking about rent? I'm not paying any rent because I'll be moving to my husband's house, Pastor Gbadamosi George's house. This car key is a step of faith because I don't want to start renting shit during my wedding"

"How in the world am I going to pay the rent alone?"

"Figure that out yourself, find someone. I might make a little donation" She shrugged shaking the car keys. "Dress up, let me treat you to dinner. But i'm hungry oh, Is there anything in the kitchen?" She rushed into the kitchen and Bimbo hissed shaking her head.

"One person, falling in love with Pastor, one person not planning for her future, one person buying car when dollar is rising like her mother's BP. Wo, Girl yii maa da opolo mi ruu, (Don't muddled my senses) why won't her mother have high blood oressure, even me gan I'm having high blood pressure. Hypertension sef!"

Friday

"How is your spiritual life? Do you go to church or you're a Jew" The HR, Mrs Damilola asked Kilahi who was seated in her office nodded in response, "I go to church"

"Perfect. Have you ever taught literature?"

"No"

"Literature is still simple, who doesn't know Simile, metaphor and Hyperbole, shebi you did it in secondary school right?"

"Yes but I think it's better someone with more university experience teach it"

"Even me that studied, Animal science, there was one time I taught Literature. It's just a matter of gaining knowledge and how consistent you are in it. You'll teach the two subjects, when they send in corpers, somebody will take over and lift the burden. Cause we've been sending letter to the Local Government Inspector, tipping him to send corpers our way but..."

Kilahi opened her eyes in amazement, so that's what these principals do???? No wonder!

"All these corpers they'll send will just start shouting, reject me, reject me. It's quite annoying. Even when you don't want to reject them, they'll find a way to Japa, I don't know how they do it, I think it's illegal. Didn't they send them to serve their father's land? In my year, it was Gombe and I served with my blood and sweat"

Kilahi cleared her throat.

"Sorry about my ranting dear, Chrisland College is a wonderful school. We are like family here, you'll get to like it. What's your salary expectation?"

"50,000 naira"

The woman laughed, "Even me, It took ten years to reach that one. Can you manage 35,000 naira? We have tried now, it's above minimum wage. If you're concerned about transport, there's a corpers lounge along the street. You can stay there till you're properly settled. At the end of the month, you'll have your 35k to yourself and money from home lesson." She scoffed laughing, "That's what teachers in Lagos are using to survive oh. Home lesson is the way. If it's 60k, by the time you'll start removing transport ehn...."

Kilahi exhaled in confusion, 35k? You go through university stress and NYSC only to get offered a thirty five thousand naira job. God! "What do you say? You don't have to do any test. Just resume work tomorrow"

"Tomorrow is Saturday"

"Ah! Mo ti gbagbe sha! (I forgot)"

"Can i think of it?" "The term will not wait, we need an answer as soon as possible so that we'll know whether to move to another candidate. Work is scarce these days, they'll be having CRS class soon oh"

Kilahi blinked completely perplexed, Shebi she said there'll be no test? Which one Is the CRS class she's talking about?

Wunmi walked into Mrs Aisha's office after a woman walked out. "Is that the rape case Aunty Abebi was talking about?" She asked taking her seat and Aisha arced her brow In surprise, only a few people know about the case.

"Good morning to you too"

"Good morning Ma. Has the father being arrested?"

"Why will my sister let you in on that case?"

"Because she wants me to feel settled in. This is my day 3 here"

"And apparently your last day"

"What?"

Aisha threw a document at her, "You think I'll hire any more staff and not do a background check?" "Excuse me?" "That document is for you" She replied and Wunmi slowly opened up going through pictures and organizational portfolios.

"Apart from your voluntary work at NICC, there are no other notable reports on you. Unicef doesn't even have you on the list of volunteers"

"I wasn't listed"

"I called Ashabi myself, she's an old friend in charge of the programme that year. Your name wasn't enlisted, she sent me a reference list and pictures. Except you had a face surgery done, show me your picture there"

Wunmi scoffed.

"Apart from that, your partying characteristic is another trait I don't like"

"What I do with my private life is none of your business"

"Not when it ruins the company's image, Smoking Shisha or whatever it's called in public, pole dancing like a slut"

"Excuse you?"

"Engaging in bar brawl. There are pictures of you there, feel free to feed your eyes"

"I should have you sued for infringement on my private life"

"Oh please save your money! You'll need for job hunting. You're fired"

"So you spent money to what? Conduct stupid investigation about me?"

"The money is not my problem, I'm a woman of standard and principle and you sweetheart, do not have one. Pack your things and vacate the office Aunty Abebi gave you now! Thank you!"

Wunmi cried, "Aunty Abebi must hear this! I've never been more humiliated"

Kilahi got out of the Chrisland college building, red marker had already stained her precious blue shirt. How it happened, she had no idea!
A phone call came from Temi and she smiled, "Good afternoon Ma" "Good afternoon dear, how are you?" "That's a tempting question cause I'll just drop my load on your head" "Are you fine?"

"I finally got called up by a school here in Lagos, I'll be teaching two subjects and the pay is 35 k"

"Really?"

"Yes. It'a annoying but I agreed, jobs are hard to come by"

"That's disappointing, I actually called to let you know that you've been hired for the job at the Foundation." "What?" "Yes dear. Don't worry, we'll pay higher than that school that only wants to suck life out of you. What do you say?"

"Yes!!"

"Can you come to the office? Mrs Aisha will be waiting for you"

Mrs Aisha stared at Kilahi, "Why will a young person like you think of suicide as a way out?" "How?... Mrs Abebi told you" "Don't let her hear you call her Mrs, call her Aunty Abebi"

"Oh."

"The interview was recorded"

"All these stress for an interview?"

Aisha laughed, "Funny my husband said the same thing. Yes, all those stress to pick you, so why will you contemplate suicide? We deal with those cases every now and then and most times our job include encouraging them and erasing those thoughts out of their mind. How do you plan to do this when you're a victim yourself?"

"It was a stupid idea. A photographer insulted the way I look while we were about to take a picture during a wedding. I was angry, I sat on the road planning to take my life, but I left as soon as the car came. I realized I didn't want to die, there's more to life than wasting my life because of one bad comment. I feel horrible everyday cause people make me fee like I don't exist but being called up today..." She paused as tears trickled down, "I think I have a chance of making a difference, I've never felt this close to an answered prayer in my life"

Aisha tore out a tissue stretching it out to her and Kilahi dabbed her eyes with it. "You remind me of my eldest sister, you should never let anyone make you feel less important, less beautiful, less great. Kilahi, you're not here on merit, you had something other applicants didn't have that's why you're sitting here." She paused pointing at the purple hijab she wore from the other day, "Does that look familiar?" "Oh my... You were that woman?"

"Yes. I actually deduced a lot from that day, I applaude your patience"

"Thank you Ma"

"Thank you for standing up for me. You gave an excuse for someone you didn't know"

"We live in Lagos, traffic was the logical reason"

"The others didn't reason like you did, that's the kind of person this organization needs, someone compassionate, ready to look beyond an issue and find solution to it. Welcome onboard Miss Kilahi, I look forward to working with you"

Kilahi knelt down, "Thank you Ma" "Oh please don't! Get up, you'll make me feel bad" Aisha rebuked and she sat back. "Let's talk about organizational rules, terms and conditions"

"Okay"

Temi crossed her leg having lunch with Kilahi, "Who is Mrs Abebi" "Aunty Abebi, don't ever call her Mrs or even Miss"

"Why?"

"She's not married" "Oh... She looks aged"

"45 years old actually, she's Aisha's eldest sister. She's so bitter, always angry, except when she's working on sensitive cases. She's a Barrister, she's skillful at her job. She's one of the best we have but her anger issue and her always frowning. We are not always on good term cause she carries all her negative energy in order to intimidate but I can't be intimidated. Don't be intimidated too, she's all bark and no bite"

Kilahi exhaled, "Thank you so much Ma, you've done all this and you're stil buying me lunch" "Don't be silly. There's just something about you Kilahi, from the first day I saw you. You're going to shine dear, this is just the beginning"

"Thank you. Are you married Ma?"

"No. Engaged, my wedding is coming up the last Saturday in Febuary. You're invited, you know what? I think I have one spare aso-ebi remaining. I'll get it across to you next week, how about that? You don't have to pay"

Kilahi gasped, "What?" She asked and Temi laughed, "Close your lips before flies enter into it"

Manny called Hilary's number using another number all to no avail. "Just take a deep breathe Manny" "I can't, I'm worried. I just want to explain myself. I feel horrible, I'm scared. I just hope she's not doing anything stupid.

Hilary stared at a pack of cigarrette in her hand, she pulled out into her mouth then with a lighter, she quickly lit the end. Let the circle of bad habits continue! At least she's not contemplating suicide, she just wants to forget all that happened, even if it's for a moment.

Gbadamosi called Bamidele Jones in the evening on Sunday; one of his daily routine check up. "Good evening Sir" He greeted causing Bamidele to laugh, "You too good evening Sir, let's Sir ourself"

"How are you?"

"Great and you?"

"I'm just there. I've got things I want to talk to you about, it's not a call thing but base on you being a busy man now, i'll have to write letter ahead"

Bamidele laughed, "Is this man whinning me?" "You're the man with the Apostolic Mantle of Moses and Elijah, I hail you. We are still learning work from you Sir. Your boy is loyal" "Gbadamosi, what did you eat?" "Holygholistic weed and wine"

"What can I do to this man oh? I'm asking Inumidun right now, princess, what should I do this man?" He asked and Gbadamosi laughed, "How are the triplets"

"They're here with me, Amazing would have said they're saying Hi"

"That'll be a lie"

"It's a lie every parent tell" He answered and Gbadamosi chuckled. "Just thought I should say hi"

"Abi you just want to confirm if I've changed my mind"

"You cannot change your mind, I know your address"

"Don't worry. We'll all be there"

"Sounds great. Have a wonderful night and extend my regards to Pastor Amazing"

"Sure. She'll hear" Bamidele dropped the call watching his kids play with the toy in bed, Amazing got out of the bathroom in towel, "Is that Pastor Gbadamosi?" "Yeah, he sends his greetings"

"Awwwn. I wanted to thank him for the gift he got us, that man can stress himself ehn!"

"Dada, chee!" Erin said inaudibly showing hi father the batman toy, "That's bat man" "DAT man" "Yes Dat man, it's beautiful" "Dada Chee" Ore stretched out his own toy at his father.

"That's Spiderman it's fine"

Amazing laughed knowing Inumidun was going to do hers too, "Dada See" She said, her words were much more clearer than her brothers. She sat on his tummy and he laughs, "My princess does not carry last, she must join! She no dey carry last" He said tickling her and she laughed falling on the bed.

"Dada, don't tuku me" She laughed and he stopped knowing she was going to end up seeking attention afterwards, "Okay. If you say, I won't tuku you again" He answered then she pinched him, "Dada....tuku me!"

"Shebi you said I should not tuku you"

"Tuku me" She begged and he growled tickling her and she laughed uncontrollably, the other two jumped on their father as though trying to rescue their sister from him but Bamidele pounced on them instead planting kisses on their foreheads.

"King of play! That's where they'll see you and your children" Amazing snapped and he laughed exhaling while they all fell on him once again. "Mummy's jealous" "Who?"

A foul smell blew across his nose and sniffled, "Hmmm! Who did that?" He asked and the all stared him laughing as though the understood what he meant.

"Someone is the culprit. Who mess, tolo tolo mess? Inie Minie, Manie...." He trailed off jumping on Inumidun, "It's you my princess" then he sniffed her buttocks. "Oh my God, that's toxic! What's mummy feeding you guys? If the three of you do this at once ehn.. I might not survive this." He teased and Amazing laughed coughing.

"Babe, what are they eating?"

"Food"

"Dada see, I woun my ham" She stretched her fingers at her father, "You what?" "She's trying to say, she has fell and hit her finger. After I told not to climb her jeep, she ended up standing on top of it."

Bamidele kisses her fingers, "Sorry baby, is It paining you?" "Yech" She answered, "I'm sorry," "Pay" "I should pray?" He asked and she nodded, "Okay. Lord, you said suffer not the children to come to you, my baby is here and she needs her healing. You said if we humble ourselves and call upon your name, you will heal our land. Inumidun has humbled herself, I'm sure she regrets climbing the jeep. Forgive her disobedience and heal her. In Jesus name"

"Amen!" She replied.

Amazing clapped her hands, "Okay dearies, Erin, Ayo, Inumidun... It's time to call it a night"

"I don't want to sleep"

"Don't worry, we'll pray to God, he'll bring the sleep. I'll read you guys Bible story, how about that?"

Bamidele pouts, "Don't take me away from my children. Let them sleep here tonight" He complained only to meet Amazing's flirty eyes. "Should I still leave them?" "Uhm.... Inumidun, it's good to sleep early... Sleep is good"

Amazing opened the door while Bamidele brought each of them down, "Oya soldiers of the most high, march march March march! " Erin and Ore stepped out except Inumidun who kissed her father on his cheek before leaving.

"Is it my own husband this small girl is kissing like that?"

Bamidele laughed, "Jealous Much?" He asked and she smiled, "I'll done in a jiffy, don't you dare sleep" "My fast is over, it's Valentine's Eve, there's no sleep for the both of us, I just hope you're ready"

"Don't flatter yourself Bambam, I was born ready"

Bamidele growled and she giggled, "Easy there tiger"

"Mommy!"

Amazing rolled her eyes, "These kids can just snap you from euphoria to reality" She muttered running out of the room out to attend to them, shortly after she came back in leaning again the door while Bamidele got out of the shower, "I'm quite disappointed, I was hoping to meet you in shower."

"I don't mind going back"

"So... Where were we?" She asked Bamidele bit his lips.
