Wintertide Wonder
You were a snowflake with no care,
A mere speck of silver streaking through the air.
A frosty blessing in disguise,
With one twirl, you lit up the skies.
And though the locomotive chugged on,
Passing valley and hilltop from dusk to dawn,
I swear all the universe stood still,
When you fell into view of my windowsill.
Who would have thought a sharp drop in degrees,
Could force my old pocket-watch to freeze?
Who would have reckoned a small icy beauty,
Could alone relieve time of its solemn duty?
Though the train rushed on with a whistle and cry,
That snowflake burnt into my memory's eye,
And I can't help but beam at the irony,
Of how such a cold thing could set fire to me.
You were a snowflake without a care,
Like a fool, I fell for you then and there.
For the way you saw the world as a challenge to face,
How you never let a man, to another, disgrace,
How I always felt warm in your snowy embrace,
Was too sublime to be commonplace.
But that cruel lord Time waits for no man,
Nor does winter last a lover's lifespan,
For when the train resumed anon,
You, with a twinkle, were naught but gone.
