#2: Hoseok
Sunshine Smiles
×××××××
Yerim didn't know what she had signed herself up for. She saw an advertisement for HYBE and just went with it, but she never, not in her 23 years of existence, expected this.
By this, she meant being up close and personal with 7 men that, up until then, she had only ever seen on a screen.
When she filled out the application, it was on a whim. There was no way, out of all the other more well-established and experienced applicants, they would choose her.
Yet, there she was getting her makeup done by professionals and wearing an outfit she could never afford. That wasn't even the worst part.
Skimming through the script, Yerim had to stop herself from audibly gasping.
Did they really want for her to do all of that?
Boy In Luv was one thing, but this? The fans would go crazy when the music video for Home came out. Yerim was losing her sanity just reading about it.
Her heart was pounding, sweat beaded at her temples, and she swore it was 100° in the dressing room. In a few seconds, if she didn't control her frenzied nerves, she would have a full blown panic attack in front of strangers.
Yerim knew that she just needed to focus on something else. She needed a distraction, one so strong it would leave her breathless.
Glimpsing at her reflection in the mirror to the side of her, she hardly recognized herself. It was partly due to the makeup and clothes, but it was mostly the frightened expression she wore. Her eyes were wide and lips pursed into a thin line.
Out in the real world, she could barely hold a conversation let alone flirt with someone. It wasn't that she didn't try to. After one too many embarrassments, she just decided not to anymore. Yerim had an introverted personality and sometimes that translated into her actions and responses when talking to just about anyone.
Thinking about it put Yerim on edge. Who was she kidding? She couldn't do this. She had to tell them before it was too late.
"Yerim-ssi, are you okay?" Yerim turned away from the mirror and met eyes clouded with concern.
She hated that she recognized who they belonged to right away. It made the situation all that much more uncomfortable.
"Huh? Um, yeah. I'm fantástico."
Fantástico? Really, Yerim? You don't even know how to speak Spanish. What are you doing?
Hoseok breathed a laugh, his smile brightening the aura surrounding everyone within a 3 foot radius. Oddly specific, but it was true. Even the makeup artists were affected by his presence. Their hold on the brushes lightened and were now feathering her face.
Yerim got first hand experience of what Hoseok was known for. He was, literally, an epitome of sunshine. Somehow, she felt more calm and reassured. Like maybe, just maybe, she could play the part, but not really.
"Actually, I think it's fantástica."
Yerim stiffened. Hoseok knew Spanish?
But what really caught her off guard was the fact he was still talking to her. He didn't furrow his brows at her out of judgment for what she had said nor did he suddenly excuse himsemf from the conversation. No, he was still standing there with what seemed to be an amused grin.
"So you speak Spanish?" Hoseok asked her. If Yerim didn't know any better, the delulu part of her brain would think he was trying to befriend her, but the reality was that he was probably just trying to make her feel comfortable.
Because she would be doing a lot of firsts today. Meeting Hoseok and the rest of BTS being one of them.
Not having expected Hoseok to actually respond, it took Yerim a few seconds to find her voice. "No, I'm just a little nervous."
"As someone who gets that feeling quite often, I can tell."
The Jung Hoseok got nervous? Yerim had thought that after performing on stage a countless amount of times that he wouldn't feel those kinds of things anymore, but it was foolish and inconsiderate of her think he wouldn't.
Hearing it from the man himself reminded Yerim that he, as well as all the other members, were regular guys who had regular emotions. Just because they were well-known artists didn't mean that they couldn't get nervous.
Out of desperation, and curiousity, Yerim decided to ask, "How do you cope?"
"Well, I have 6 best friends who go through the same thing, so we kind of rely on each other."
That wasn't quite what Yerim hoped Hoseok would say, but it made sense that they there for each other, and it warmed her heart knowing that the friendship ARMY saw on camera was real off camera too.
Sadly, she didn't have that kind of support. Her frown deepened as she thought that she would have to deal with her nerves all on her own.
"Yerim-ssi, don't worry. You can lean on me today."
In that moment, everything she was feeling vanished. Nervous? No. But was her heart still pounding? Yes, though for another reason entirely. She could hear each beat clearly in her eardrums and feel it pulse in her fingertips.
Her eyes immediately averted elsewhere, away from Hoseok's comforting gaze. She knew if she held contact any longer, she'd somehow convince herself that he was flirting with her, but that'd be insane. There's no way he'd do that. This was Jung Hoseok she was talking to. Not some rando in a cafe.
Flirting was out of the question. He was just being nice.
"Yerim-ssi," Hoseok called out to her again. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable, but really, if you're feeling nervous while we film, you can always look to me. I'll distract you."
He didn't wait for her reply as he turned to walk away. It was okay, she wouldn't have known what to say anyway, but he left her there feeling more confused than ever. A part of her was internally screaming at the fact he was being so kind to her and the other was trying so hard to make her believe it was done out of actual interest in her.
Yerim shook her head and chided herself.
Stop, don't be ridiculous.
That was the last sane thought Yerim had before she was pulled out of the director's chair she was sitting in. Her mind became a frenzy, getting last minute touch ups on her makeup and hair. It all happened so fast too, because the next thing Yerim knew she was standing in the kitchen she had seen on Jimmy Fallon when BTS had previously performed the song they were making a music video for.
"Alright, Yerim-ssi, we'll be filming the choruses. Do as it says in the script, and we'll adjust accordingly." The director throws Yerim a small smile, the kind that if she messes up in anyway he won't yell at her for her incompetence, which puts her at ease. Only for a short minute though as she remembers what she read.
Yerim tensed, getting all the more nervous, until she thought about what Hoseok said.
Where is he?
She glimpsed in the direction she came from. He wasn't there. Her gaze traveled to where the director and crew were at, and that's when she spotted him just a little off to the side with the other members who also weren't in the scene.
He wasn't currently looking at her, but some higher power must've let him know she was, because not a second later, his gaze locked with hers.
Hoseok's lips upturned. The dimples Yerim had cooed at in the privacy of her own bedroom appeared as he nodded his head at her and gave her a thumbs up. Warmth blossomed in her chest, and suddenly, it felt like summer where worries became carefree. In that moment, Yerim received a rush of confidence that with Hoseok there, she could do anything.
Despite knowing what would happen next, she took Hoseok's encouragement and faced the situation head on.
Yerim stood there waiting for when the cameras would start rolling and Jimin clasped her hand in his. Then, it switched to being Jungkook's as he walked backwards and slowly lead her to the bedroom.
It continued transitioning between the members. There were pauses while filming, so when Jungkook was to sit on the bed, it became Jin. When she sat next to him after, it returned to Jimin. The touching was becoming more bold as he started to tuck her hair behind an ear, which turned into Taehyung finishing the action.
So much was going on all at once, especially when towards the end of the chorus, all of them were in the final shot whether they were sitting on the bed or standing near her.
Despite all that was happening, Yerim could only focus on one thing - a thought that she wished it had all been with Hoseok. She wasn't in any scenes with him as she was only to make an appearance in the chorus, but he had made a lasting impression on her even though her bias was Yoongi.
When it came down to it though, no matter how opposite the two were, Yerim's heart had a mind of it's own.
Being preoccupied with thoughts of Hoseok, filming had gone by fairly quick.
Once they had finished, Yerim was brought back to the director's chair.
She couldn't believe she had done all that without so many outtakes. She had complied and done everything expected of her, and now, she can gush about her experience with her best friend, who had probably been sending mass text messages to her the entire time.
It was only then that she decided to check her phone, and indeed, she had several notifications from Duri. Yerim unlocked her phone and started reading what was sent. She was about to respond to it all only to stop short as Hoseok came into view.
She immediately turned her phone off and placed it on the makeshift makeup counter in front of her.
"You did great, Yerim-ssi," Hoseok commended her with another smile. "You only looked my way once, and it was like something in you flipped. I think you've got a talent for this kind of thing."
There it was again. Something that sounded a little like flirting to Yerim, but anyone who was as genuine as Hoseok was probably only be friendly. It didn't keep her heart from picking up speed though.
"I don't know about that. I was only able to get through it because of what you said, but thank you," Yerim responded softly. She could feel her cheeks begin to flush, to which she was sure Hoseok would notice.
And he did.
"I don't normally do this, but," Hoseok trailed off, suddenly becoming very shy as he rubbed the back of his neck, "can I have your number?"
Yerim's eyes widened. Did he- So he really was flirting with her?
"Oh, um, you don't have to. It's fine. I just thought that- I don't know. Was it just me or did we have a connection? Because I thought there was something here... between us," Hoseok rambled, mistaking Yerim's response to his question to mean the exact opposite of what she had intended by it.
She had just been shocked. She hadn't expected that what she thought was actually happening, that he had been flirting. Was this real?
By God, it better not be some sick joke the universe was doing to her. Yerim didn't think she could take this kind of embarrassment. All the ones had been her doing, but this was out of her control. Sort of.
She wanted to say yes and give him her number, what if he didn't text her? Or worse, what if he did?
"I'm not really good at this sort of thing, but I understand if you're not interested. I... I just thought I'd shoot my shot." This time it was Hoseok's face that turned a soft pink.
Yerim had indirectly embarrassed him. She needed to fix this.
"No, it's my fault. Usually I'm the one who misses, but you... you made the basket." The words came out before Yerim could fully process them.
Why was she so awkward when it came to anything remotely romantic? Made the basket? She could've just said she would give him her number.
The smile easily returned on Hoseok's lips. "Great! Here's my phone."
Unbeknownst to them, this was just the start of something even greater.
