Dear Pain

〰〰〰〰〰〰〰

That's the thing about pain,
it demands to be felt.
[John Green]

Dear Pain,

You were the one who was always cursed at. Nightmare is what they call you. But were you? Were you really a nightmare or just a consequence we called upon ourselves? Yes, you were an outcome for some, a nightmare for a few and a constant state for the rest.

But could all three cases be compared? An outcome could lead you to death, it could feel like dying or it could indeed be death. A nightmare might kill one if it became a reality while in the constant state -- one could be alive but ceased to live and perhaps that is the scariest of all, to live in that kind of emotional numbness.

You were a passerby for few, but they never knew when you would tag along. And they like me, live fearing you. Your gaze powerful enough to set fire. And you the so called Devil. You passed by and then someone would put off the fire, it could be an opportunity for the ones who received you as an outcome. It could be a daydream for those who received you as a nightmare and it could be hope to endure you a little longer for those you didn't easily leave behind.

I might even say you were clingy if your eyes caught someone. While others like Love -- graced us with a peck on the cheek, Jealously -- with a glare in the eye, you went down pulling your prey with you. Hope might pull your prey up, but what about you? How long do you plan to stay there with the thorns you planted for them, piercing you the most?

Let's get up now. And let's meet, occasionally. Only when I look down upon someone, glare me with your heated gaze. Only when I stop realizing how important someone else is, punch me in my face Only when I bring repulsive thoughts about someone who doesn't deserve it, push me to the ground. Only if I hurt someone I shouldn't have, kick me hard. Only if I make a monster out of a person, defeat me.

But until then, let's just meet in fleeting glances that pass away in the blink of an eye.

From,
a passerby.

What's the emotion you wished you never felt?

Thanks for reading x

Love,
Isla.
