Dear Matthew | Letter Seven
Dear Matthew,
I just realized I mentioned the Disney College Program in my last letter, but because I've been silent with you, you probably don't know what it is. Let me elucidate.
The Disney College Program—DCP—is an internship for college students and recent graduates (up to two years out of college). They work for Walt Disney World in Florida for four months to one year. I attended it from May 2023 to May 2024. Don't be fooled by the "most magical place on Earth", though, big brother. Disney has a dark side.
You can't choose where you work at Disney. They put you wherever they need you. I winded up in Custodial at All-Star Sports. Custodial. Now, don't get me wrong; it wasn't terrible. I worked with a great team, but Disney (please excuse my juvenile language) treats CPs like crap. They overwork us and barely pay us enough to buy food. Disney can schedule CPs as much as they want if there's an eight-hour shift gap. I've heard that some have worked as much as fourteen days in a row, and that's abuse. Likewise, the living situation for CPs, Flamingo Crossings, is beautiful but has flaws. One of the roommates I had smoked pot, and she smelled like it every night. Disney barely did something to help me.
The worst part was at the end of my Program. I worked so hard for Disney—I only called out once during the whole year I was there—and all they offered me was Part-Time in Attractions, which could've been anything from Star Wars to parking cars in a parking lot in Florida heat.
I was so mad, Matthew. Disney had no right to do that and give the less-motivated CPs Full-Time positions. At that point, I decided Disney wasn't for me, so I left, which led to my previous letter. I've been in an abusive relationship before with Michael, my first boyfriend, so I know what abuse looks like. Disney has issues with that, even though Inclusion is one of their Five Keys. Regardless, that doesn't mean it wasn't an incredible experience—just flawed.
I made so many friends, Matthew. That's huge for me because I'm shy and have few friends. I even thought of an incredible new story based on the DCP and you, Milo and Maisie. It's my first LGBTQ+ book because of that Inclusion Key. I might as well use it in my writing if Disney won't. While LGBTQ+ was a little nerve-wracking to write at first, I got used to it, and now I believe Milo and Maisie is one of my best stories.
Are you asking me if I'm queer, Matthew? No, I'm not, but I believe in Equality and Inclusion because of Cousin Sara and Amanda. I'm representing our family with Milo and Maisie, and I believe that's the greatest magic I received from the DCP.
Well, I've rambled again as I usually do. I love you, Matthew, and I'll tell you more stories later.
- Your little sister,
Vika
