Dear Matthew | Letter Nine
Dear Matthew,
The last few weeks have been hectic but good. I still have much to learn with the Patriots Point job, and my shyness shows, so I've set up personal goals for myself. I will admit that it is hard to relate to eighty-year-old veterans when you're only twenty-six, but I'm trying. I hope to get a roommate at the North Charleston house soon; however, I must wait until Dad finishes the renovations. On the bright side, though, I'm going to have Sophie, Mom's Maine Coon, for a month while she and Dad are in Greece, so that will be nice—to have another soul in the house.
I mentioned in one of my last letters that Patriots Point assigned me to write the main article for the Fall Scuttlebutt, remember? Well, I finished it and sent it off to the editor. Eight drafts later, they gave me the all-clear that it's ready for publication! Yay! I've been waiting eight years for this day, Matt. Sure, it's not a book, but that doesn't mean this isn't a huge accomplishment for me. It doesn't take much to satisfy me in the writing world. I want to start small and work my way up. Therefore, this article is perfect! I don't know much about World War II history, but luckily, the editor does, so he's fixing the flaws. There were only a few, so that is good news for me. With more practice, I'm sure I'll write like a World War II historian in no time!
9/11 was a few days ago, and Patriots Point held a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. This was interesting because I was too young to remember when it happened. Where were you during 9/11, Matthew?
Anyway, Yorktown blew its horn with each of the important time frames of the event, such as when the North and South Towers were hit, when they fell, and the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. Firefighters, police, and those who lost friends and family or experienced those attacks attended the event. PP held it on the Flight Deck. One man, Dennis, who survived the Towers, shared his story. Matthew, that was one of the bravest things I have ever seen someone do. I attended in remembrance of you and to show my respects. Even though you didn't die during 9/11, I tragically lost you, so it was only necessary to attend. I wish you would have seen it; it was an incredible ceremony!
Now for the Wattpad Creators Program... It's going well. I'm working on a new pitch for the Wattpad Originals Program, so we'll see what happens. I want to be the oddball out. I don't want to write what's popular, so my chances of getting accepted into the Program are slim, but I'll keep trying. That's the only thing I can do. I'm merely happy to be a Wattpad Creator at the end of the day. I'm also getting published, so I don't care what happens on the website for the rest of the year. I'm the oddball out, Matthew, and I'm proud of it.
- Your little sister,
Vika
