#3.5 - Crybaby Byun Baek
It has been two weeks since Park Chanyeol and I went back to our family homes.
After staying in the penthouse together for quite some time and experiencing the place, we already agreed on a few renovations and repaintings. There won't be major constructions, really, just some changed furniture and added utilities. I even personally asked the decorator to paint the kids' bedrooms white because I will be the one to create murals on them soon once they come. And just thinking about it makes me feel super excited.
Today, though, I was awoken at around five in the morning by a loud pounding on my door. When I opened it, my fiancé walked in breezely then basically dragged me straight to my closet without saying anything. He's whistling a song I don't know as he grins at me excitedly.
I am half-asleep and half-pissed at him as he undressed me, removing my favorite pair of satin pajamas, then slipping me into some sweatshirt and jogging pants. When I happened to look at our reflection on my full-length mirror, I noticed that we're wearing matching clothes. He slipped a grey beanie hat on my head and wore his own baseball cap.
"What the fck are you doing?" I groaned when he pulled me next to the bathroom.
"Here. Brush your teeth," he inserted the toothbrush between my pursed lips and I almost kicked his face. "Come on, hurry up. We're going for a jog!"
What.
Even through my constant whining and cursing, we finished two laps around our village, covering three blocks then back at our front gates. Chanyeol brought his own bunch of security guards but they just stand on the sides of the road, watching the area, and muttering words into their intercom. I half-expected them to jog with us, too, but that didn't happen. Pity. It would have been hilarious.
As I gave them a glance, I suddenly wonder how being Park Chanyeol's security feels like?
I looked at my fiancé who is drinking from his water bottle. We're both tired already, sweating, and breathing heavily. With a grin, I wiped my face with a towel then tugged at his sweatshirt. "Hey! Wanna bet?"
Chanyeol looks at me curiously. "What kind of bet?"
I pointed at the end of the road four blocks from us, where the street diverge into two. "Let's have a race. There's a cafe when you turn right there. The first one to reach that cafe wins, and the loser must do whatever the winner wants, like maybe... buy him some latte?" I looked at him smugly. "You on?"
My fiancé pouts, thinking, and obviously not liking the latte idea. "Wait. Whatever the winner wants?"
Then I recognized the look on his face so I shook my head fiercely. "N-No— B-But... Yeah," I mutter shyly. "Just nothing sexual or degrading! I know what you're thinking!"
"Oh? Nothing like that?" Chanyeol frowns. "Then I'm out."
What the fck, this prick!
I narrowed my eyes into slits then gave his shoulder a push. "Why? Huh? You afraid?" I started to trash talk him. "You afraid of me, punk? What are you, a fcking pussy? Afraid to lose, huh? What a fcking loser." I stepped closer to him and intended to intimidate him with my gaze but then he's fcking taller and I definitely don't look like I was looking down on him so I just stepped back and put on my most threatening face.
But my fiancé just looked at me with quite an amused face. He's even trying to fight off a smile. "Are you... trash talking me, Byun Baek?"
"Yeah," I pushed him by the chest, enough to force him to step back and catch his balance. "I'mma beat your fcking ass, you fcking piece of sht."
Park Chanyeol bit his lip then nodded, his face suddenly unrecognizable. Uh-oh. Did I go too far?
Suddenly, he stepped closer to me, his face a few inches from mine. He looked me down, his eyes sharp and his lips pressed into a thin line. "You think you're gonna win, huh?" He mutters under his breath. And he sounded really scary that I felt my facade break immediately, my eyes widening a bit. "I'm going to crush you, you—" Then he stopped, his gaze regarding me for a moment. "What—? I can't trash talk you when you're suddenly looking like a puppy asking for a cuddle, hon," he complains. "Why're you so cute, anyway? That's unfair."
Oh? The remark made me laugh despite myself. "Sorry," I looked at him apologetically before cocking my head to one side and smiling brightly. "You still on, babe?"
"Sure!" He exclaims. "I will surely beat you and you're going to regret making this bet with me." Chanyeol started to stretch and I followed suit, throwing him competitive glances and making him laugh even more. "I have long strides so watch out," he winks.
"Oh yeah?" I raised a brow and crossed my arms over my chest. "Well I'm definitely lighter... And smaller... A-And more flexible!"
Then Chanyeol smirked before slowly looking me over from head to toe. "Oh, I know," he smiled devilishly. "I know just how flexible you are, babe."
Blood rushed to my cheeks in an instant and I have to look away just to hide the reddening of my face. "You're such a pervert!" I cried out, embarrassed. My fiancé is still laughing when I went to the starting line— a road mark just in front of our house. What the fck? How could he make such statements so casually? It's not like anyone else heard... But still! When I felt Park Chanyeol stand beside me, I gave him a glare. "So, pervert," I started. "On three or after three?"
"Wha— Don't call me that!" He complains before giving a resigned huff. "Fine... After three. Geez, you're really into this, huh, babe? You gonna make me jump off a building or something?"
I stared daggers at him for a few more seconds before answering, "Maybe." I really want to win this sht so badly! To be honest, I still don't have any request in mind but I surely like the idea of having him do something for me in the most convenient circumstance possible. It's like... Having a genie on standby: Do this, do that. No questions asked!
Chanyeol sighed. "Okay," he breathes. "One. Tw—"
"WAIT!" I held up my hands, making my fiancé stop to look at me curiously. Then without thinking, I ran to the nearest security personnel my fiancé brought with him. I pulled him by the wrist and he's obviously really surprised he doesn't know what to do— Just started looking at his mates for help. Yo! It's not like I'm going to hurt you! I dragged the security to the center of the road before facing him. "Okay, Mr...?"
"It's C-Choi, sir Baek," his voice is trembling. OMG. Is he afraid of me?
"Okay, Mr. Choi!" I beamed at him. "You count to three."
Mr. Choi stared at me blankly for a moment. "W-What, sir?"
"Oh," I leaned in to whisper. "I really don't trust Park Chanyeol during this kind of situations," I said in a really low voice. "So we gotta make sure I win fair and square. Got it?"
"Hey!" Chanyeol called out. "Are you bribing Mr. Choi?"
"Of course not!" I shouted before giving the security a huge smile. He simply nodded but still looks quite confused as to what's going on. But I'm sure he'll be just fine. And so, my fiancé and I went back to the starting line and before Mr. Choi could even start counting, I gave Park Chanyeol another death glare and a thumbs down gesture. He just laughs me off. What a fcking prick!
Mr. Choi clears his throat. "Okay..." he falters. "O-One... Two... Three!"
I was practically running for my life. When I boasted a while ago that I am light, I'm not joking. I could easily carry myself during these kinds of times and I guess the only thing keeping me from winning this race is Chanyeol being unnecessarily tall. He really does have long strides and runs really fast. When we were in college, he would run almost all the time from here and there to wherever I am just to deliver a project or assignment I left somewhere only he could remember. He was basically my savior. AND! He was never late.
Sure, I love him. But I won't let him win today! I won't—
Suddenly, two strong arms wrapped themselves around my waist, forcing me to a stop. I cried out when Chanyeol basically carried me a few steps back, making me lose my balance, before letting me go and running away. "HEY!" I screamed, when I finally realized what is happening. "THAT'S CHEATING, JERK!"
Park fcking Chanyeol is laughing his ass off. "There were no rules!" He shouted back.
"WHAT THE—?!" I am so enraged I could break his fcking neck! "ARGH!" I stamped my foot like a child having tantrums and racked my brain for anything I could do. "Fcking jerk!" I hissed under my breath. My fiancé is already reaching the third block and he's not even running! Just enjoying his own fcking jog! Is he not taking this bet seriously? "Fine. No rules, huh?" I grumbled. "I'll show you."
As Chanyeol continued jogging, I stepped forward and yelled, "HEY!"
Still with that amused look, Park Chanyeol turned to look at me, hands on his hips. "What?" he asked loudly. "Ready to concede defeat?"
Concede defeat?! You've got to be kidding me! Instead of answering his question, I tugged at the hem of my sweatshirt and made a move to remove it. "I'll take this off."
Chanyeol's face practically turned to stone. "What?"
"I'll take this sweaters off," I threatened. "I have a t-shirt underneath but I'll remove that, too!" I know I act like a child and probably sound like one but since we all know Park Chanyeol's weakness, why not strike him where it matters, right? Hee-hee.
My fiancé stopped then looked around nervously. The village is definitely not empty and a few other people living in the area is having their morning jog. His road security is even making rounds. Hhmm. I wonder what will Chanyeol do? Will he get angry at me? Will he stop talking to me for a day? Or a week? I prepared myself for the worst. But with a sigh, Park Chanyeol immediately jogged back to me and I just looked at him with narrowed eyes.
"Fine," he breathes when he's already standing before me. "I'll do whatever you ask."
I stared at him blankly. Huh?
"Are you... conceding defeat?"
"You were seriously about to cry," Chanyeol says, poking my cheek. "And what's with the I'll-get-naked-if-you-won't-let-me-win stunt? You could still run after me, babe. I was just jogging and I will let you win, anyway."
My eyes sparkled with glee. "You will?"
"Well, yeah..." Chanyeol looked at me like I'm missing something obvious. "Besides, I already have the feeling you'll cry if you lose."
I slapped his arm. "I won't cry!"
Chanyeol chuckles then poked my cheeks again. "See? You're already tearing up," he teases. "You're such a crybaby."
I pout and glared up at him. "Why do you keep teasing me?" I whined. "You're so mean!"
"Aw, babe," my fiancé cooed as he slowly pulled me into his arms, laughing at how 'cute' I could be. Well fck being cute! I don't want to be cute! Why is he so mean to me? :( Can I not be mannish even for a second? A teeny-weenie second? Suddenly, I felt a soft kiss on my head and despite my annoyance, I felt myself just melt in his arms. God. I am so smitten. "I know that cafe you were talking about," he murmured against my hair. "It's one of Jiyong's."
"Your friend?" I mumbled against his chest.
"Yeah," Chanyeol grins. "You still like some latte?"
I pulled back so I could beam at him excitedly. "Of course!" I grinned. "Give me that latte and I won't think you're mean again... at least for today."
"For today only?!"
"Yeah..." I nodded. "Only for today."
Park Chanyeol and I decide to just have breakfast in the cafe. My class wouldn't start until nine and his first meeting would be around ten. When I checked my watch, I realized we still have some time to spare so there's no hurrying.
The cafe Jiyong owns has a small branch in our village, with just enough space for a few tables and a cozy ambiance. It's like a cottage, but with glass walls and pretty chandeliers. The people are kind and the manager seems to know Chanyeol because she personally greeted my fiancé, and after Chanyeol introduced me, she led us to a private spot at the far corner of the shop.
"Should I pick you up after your classes, babe?" Chanyeol asked just as they serve our food. "We could grab dinner together."
I bit my lip and thought a little. "That would be great but I still haven't finished my series for the exhibit next week," I muttered sadly. "I still got two blank canvas waiting and I'm still not done with the ongoing one." I chewed on my lip as I stare at my pasta. Oh sht. I'm getting stressed again over an event. Why does this sht happen to me so often? Unthinking, I started fumbling with the pendant of the necklace I'm wearing— the one Park Chanyeol gave me that night. For some reason, touching it calms me so I developed quite the habit of holding unto it during troubling times.
"Hey," Chanyeol murmured softly and he gently took my hand, making me look at him again. "I'm sorry for making you think about the exhibit again. Are you okay, baby?"
I gave my fiancé a smile. "I'm fine," I assured him. "Just... nervous."
"You'll do well, I know," he held my hand tightly then gave it a kiss. "I love you."
Just a few words and I felt my cheeks burn and my smile brighten. "I love you," I whispered back, a weight slowly disappearing from my chest. Huh. I wonder if it's the words or the way he had spoken them that makes me feel better every time.
Park Chanyeol studied my face for a little while more before returning to his cup of coffee. Just so my mind won't wander off to where my paintings are, Chanyeol started telling me something about building a fourth level for the penthouse.
"A fourth level?" I frowned. "For what?"
"No rooms," he says. "Just a rooftop. For a helipad."
My mind went blank. "A what now?"
"A helicopter pad."
"I know what a helipad is, Park," I rolled my eyes.
"But you said—"
"You know what I meant!"
"Oh," Park Chanyeol shrugs. "I'll be buying a helicopter in the future so maybe we can just get the rooftop constructed now while we're at it."
I'm so confused. What's with all these stuff?
"You have a private plane," I pointed out. "And eight cars... What's with the helicopter?" It's not like I'm about to stop him. Whatever money he earns, those are his to spend. It's just that, I don't get why he's buying another vehicle for aerial transport when he already has one. And I don't want to hear another, 'I'm craving for some ramen. Want to go to Japan?' kind of sht again because I'll definitely kick his ass this time.
"It's for the kids," Chanyeol suddenly deadpanned. "You wouldn't want them to be late for school, would you?"
Huh?
WHAT.
If my mind could go even more blank, it definitely just did.
Blanker. Blankest.
"The fck?"
Chanyeol looks at me in confusion. "Wha— Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Seriously?" My eyes are wide with disbelief. "A helicopter? To school? For the kids? Are you fcking kidding me? You went to school yourself and you had a driver. You turned out fine! Plus, when you were courting me, we even go on foot! What's with the sudden grand idea?"
"Our family house was just close enough, but the penthouse? It's too far from the international school we were planning to send them to. Also, riding on wheels is an absolute waste of time," Chanyeol mutters. "With a chopper, there'll be less traffic and they could save more time."
"Oh my god," I clasped my chest then breathe through my mouth. "I think I'm having a heart attack."
Our children aren't even here yet but I'm already getting the feeling they will be super spoiled and doted on by this handsome man right here. What if they grow up to be such mean kids in school? Or what if they grow up knowing nothing about cooking rice or fixing their beds? I can't— I can't even think about it.
I placed my hands on the table and looked at my fiancé straight in the eyes. "Babe, we really need to get those parenting thoughts fixed," I mutter under my breath. "I'm seriously scared right now for our kids!"
Park Chanyeol is as confused as I am. Maybe even more. "Why—" but before he could say another word, his phone starts ringing. With a frown, he fished out his phone from his pockets, reading the caller ID. "It's my secretary," he mutters, his look definitely asking for permission. "Should I take it? Or..."
"Take it," I said. "We'll talk later."
My fiancé nodded at me before tapping on the screen and speaking away. As I finished my coffee and think about how ridiculous Park Chanyeol's ideas are, I can't help but laugh a little. He overthinks, yes, but he's just too sweet sometimes and I could see he's really trying.
Parenting isn't like a cookbook where you could just follow what's written on it and expect the right results to come out. A handbook doesn't come with every child, telling you these are what you do and don't do to raise this kid right. It's like trial-and-error, it's just that... You'll be trying your best not to hit a wrong button. Yeah, my fiancé might sound real funny and absurd right now, but just thinking about how determined he is about buying a fcking helicopter for our future children just says a lot about how much of whatever he is willing to give up just for them. We don't even know them yet... but I'm sure we love them already.
A familiar shade of brown caught up in my peripheral gaze as I am stealing bites from Chanyeol's plate. I whipped my head to its direction and almost spat out the lasagna. "Rain?" I breathed in disbelief. A brown Siberian husky is standing outside the cafe doors, staring straight at our direction. Our eyes met and when the dog lifted his head excitedly, the gems embedded on his collar winked as the light hit them. "Rain!" Chanyeol looks startled by my outburst but I said, "I'll go get him," before standing up and dashing out of the door.
My fiancé seems to be in the middle of an important call so I don't want to disturb him. Hmm. Do they allow pets inside the cafe?
When I stepped outside, I immediately went on my knees and the dog started licking my face excitedly. "Oh, sweet boy," I giggled as I caress his fur. "What happened? Why are you outside? Did they leave the gates open again?" I gave him a few kisses. "You followed us here, didn't you? You're so smart, aren't you, sweetheart?"
Rain isn't a puppy anymore. Within just a few weeks, when he stands on his two back legs, his front paws could already reach my chest. The veterinarian says he grows up fast and it must be because of his diet and the vitamins we give him. But despite his size, Rain loves being babied by Chanyeol. A lot. Sometimes, he wouldn't stop following my fiancé around the house until Chanyeol puts him in his arms and cradle him like a child. It would often end up with the dog sleeping on his lap while he reviews for a presentation the next day.
I gave Rain another hug before pointing at Chanyeol through the glass wall, "Let me get your other human first then we'll get out of here, okay?" I grinned. Rain let out an excited bark and started reaching for my shirt when I tried to stand up, his nails catching up on my collar. "Rain—" I pulled away, just enough so I could stand up straight and prepare to carry him when I felt something hit my back.
"AAAHHHHH!" I hear someone squeal and I turned back immediately to see two women wearing expensive-looking dresses, now glaring at me like crazy. The short-haired one looks fine. But the one with long, blonde hair is definitely not happy with her spilled cup of coffee. "My dress!" She screamed at me. "It's ruined, you stupid btch!"
"I-I'm sorry—" I stammered. WTF. I don't know what to do! "I'm so sorry!" Rain on the other hand is already baring his teeth angrily at the strangers and I have to hold unto his collar just so he won't attack them. "Please— I'm going to pay for it. Just— Wait—" Oh shoot. I don't have my wallet with me.
"Are you blind?!" The woman threw her coffee cup at my feet. "This is a limited edition Gucci dress and you're thinking you could just pay for it?! Are you kidding me?!"
"I'll get you a new one!" I offered. "My future sister-in-law is a Gucci executive des—"
But the blonde just held up her hand to my face, stopping me. "That's what liars say when they get caught up in this kind of situation," she hissed. "Don't even try lying, okay? I don't want to hear your bullcrap."
Huh? What bullcrap?
I turned my gaze to Park Chanyeol but he's currently busy typing some notes on my phone while listening intently from his. What the fck? Look at me, you idiot! I need your here! "Okay..." I looked back at the lady who is still obviously mad at me. "Just let me get some money from him..." I pointed at Chanyeol through the glass and the women traveled their gaze to where my finger is pointing at.
"T-That's—" The blonde gasped. "That's CEO Park Chanyeol! What is he doing here?"
My eyes went wide from the remark. They know my fiancé?! OMG. Good sht! Maybe I could slip out of this conversation safely and just—
"What are you? A beggar?" The short-haired one looked at me, disgusted. "Asking other people for money?"
"O-Oh—" WHAT. THE. FCK.
The blonde btch is still looking at Chanyeol. "He's that billionaire bachelor my office mates were talking about," she gushed at her friend. "What the hell is he doing here? Does he live here?" Her eyes went wide. "Do we live in the same village? Oh my gosh! Maybe I'll ask him to have coffee with me here every morning..."
I fought the urge to let go of Rain's collar and just let him kill them before my very eyes. "Actually, he's—" but I stopped when I suddenly felt my fiancé's eyes on me. Unthinking, I immediately looked at his direction and when he saw the cry for help in my eyes, he muttered something on his phone before standing up and walking towards our direction. The women audibly gasped when Park Chan walked out the door.
"Is everything alright here?" His eyes are narrowed when he looked at the two women. Rain started barking excitedly and Chanyeol took hold of its collar for me, reaching down to run his hand along its fur until it calms down.
The blonde held out a manicured hand towards my fiancé. "CEO Park," she started shyly. "You may not remember me but I'm Oh Seoyoon. I was the representative Geum Yoon Corporation sent last week for the document signing." She smiled brightly and I really, really want to rip that grin off her pretty face. What a flirt.
Park Chanyeol just stared at her, probably racking his brain, trying to remember this woman's face. But instead of taking her hand, Chanyeol turned to look at me. "What's the matter here?" He asked quietly.
"Well, I..." I gestured towards Oh Seoyoon. "I accidentally bumped into her when they were walking out the door. She spilled her coffee and now her dress is ruined. I'm really sorry." Rain let out a low growl and Chanyeol obviously tightened his hold around the dog.
"I see," Chanyeol mused. "Sorry for the inconvenience, Ms. Oh."
The women look utterly confused. "W-Why are you—"
"Please send your concerns to my secretary and we assure you that all your belongings will be replaced perfectly," Chanyeol said seriously, his gaze firm and unwavering. "I'll tell So Eun to expect an email from you. Will that be fine, Ms. Oh?"
"W-Why—" But instead of answering, Seoyoon looks at me accusingly. "W-Who are you?"
Chanyeol looks insulted himself. "This is—"
"No one," I said quietly, stopping Park Chanyeol. "Just... No one."
My fiancé looked at me, his eyes wide, but when he saw and understood the look on my face, Chanyeol just pursed his lips and didn't say anything else. He just gave the girls sharp looks until they were the ones to look away.
I didn't want to prove myself to anyone that very moment. I don't want to drop my name and expect everyone to treat me differently. I do not despise Park Chanyeol and everything that he is and has. But I don't feel the need to go about telling everyone I'm his 'fiancé' just so I would be seen in a different light by some mean, hateful people. They don't deserve that kind of effort.
"Well, then," Park Chanyeol cleared his throat. "Don't forget the email, Ms. Oh." And without another word, he's already guiding Rain into the cafe. The dog growled and barked at the girls and I have to follow suit immediately just so he'll stop trying to attack them.
Is this how it feels to date a famous person? It kinda sucks. It conveys fake people and fake treatment and bad judgements. I get it now why a lot of celebrities hide their relationships from the public. It's safer that way. You protect not just yourself, but the person you love.
However, I guess the only difference Park Chanyeol makes is that he knows my heart really well. He never fails to see a certain situation through my eyes and it ends up with him understanding what I want or how I want to handle a certain situation. He knows when I want to expose myself or keep quiet; When I want to get angry or cry; When I want to btch out or just keep it in. We understand each other so well and love each other enough to make every situation work. Our relationship... it's different. And that difference brought us to where we are now.
When I stepped into the cafe, I could still feel the women's gazes boring into my skin.
I didn't look back.
"What? You've got to be fcking kidding me!" Amber Liu exclaimed, slamming her book shut.
Choi Sulli's eyes are also wide with surprise. "Seriously?! A helipad?!"
What—? Amber and I glared at her in unison. "SULLI!"
"That isn't what we are talking about now!" I scolded her. "And I can't believe you're still thinking about that helicopter sht."
We are currently having lunch inside a small pizza place near the art school, and Amber was talking about this place since last week. I just told them everything that happened to me and Chanyeol this morning, and my friends already threw themselves into a cursing feat. We're almost done with our food but these two girls right here won't leave until they know every little detail.
"Fine, fine," Sulli raised her hands as if in surrender. "I'm just so pissed at that woman my mind can't help but repel her off. She's like some virus."
"What do we do then?" Amber asked. "And what was her name? Do we bash her on social media? Ambush her? Or better yet, kill her?" The excitement in Amber's voice is almost palpable I almost felt like she could be a great serial killer in the future.
I propped my chin on one hand before letting out a sigh. "I think it's Oh Seoyoon?" I murmured, unsure. "But I don't want to be thinking about her now, honestly. I have a bigger crisis in mind."
Amber suddenly looks worried. "What is it?"
My fingers fly to my neck, touching the bare skin. "My necklace," I breathed and my lower lip quivered. "I lost it." Just before I took a bath this morning, I took off all my clothes and caught a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror. I never remove the necklace even when I'm bathing, so when I realized it's gone, I just started crying and running all over the house this morning, looking for it.
"Oh sht," Amber gasped. "Does Chanyeol know?"
"Of course not," I clasped my head in frustration. "I'm pretty sure he won't get mad... But he'll be seriously disappointed. And I don't want that to happen... W-What do I do?"
Amber bit his lip, thinking. "Well, maybe—"
"OH MY GOD!" Sulli suddenly cried out and we immediately looked at her direction, startled. Even some people in the diner turned to look. My friend is staring sharply at her phone with wide eyes and gaped lips. "I went to Instagram to search for that girl you were talking about and guess what I found: 'Can't believe how pretty this jewelry is. Probably a good omen after a sh*tty encounter! LOL. #moreGUCCIplease #blessed', " she reads the caption. "And look! It's your fcking necklace she's wearing!"
"WHAT?!" I practically snatched the phone off Sulli's grip. The screen is showing a very close up selfie of Oh Seoyoon probably in her workplace, judging from the location. She's wearing an off-shoulder dress and to top it all off: My fcking necklace. It's my necklace! MY NECKLACE! "This fcking btch!" I hissed through gritted teeth, pointing at the screen. "That's my mine! It was custom made and Chanyeol designed that himself. How could she—" Oh sht. At the cafe, Rain might have accidentally pulled on it when he was trying to get me to carry him. How come I didn't notice it?
Oh right. Because some btch just suddenly started screaming.
Sulli took her phone from me so she could glare at the picture. "Oh, you did not, btch!" she sneered. "Did you just take something from my bestfriend? Ooohhh. You're so going down!"
I clenched my fists and stared daggers at the phone screen. "She's so fcking fcked."
The next morning, at around six, I am already standing right outside the cafe Jiyong owns, waiting for that familiar pair of women about to get their morning coffee. Rain is with me on a leash because... Why not? I might need him to attack a certain somebody later on. Today, I am wearing some turtleneck jacket and jogging pants, and I also put on a matching beanie hat to hide my face a little. I'm not planning to do something illegal. Just... costume. The cafe is almost empty this time of the day and only two cars are parked outside.
Rain has been uneasy ever since we arrived, sniffing the ground and clawing on the glass wall as if looking for someone. Suddenly, my phone started ringing so I immediately took it from my jacket pocket. It's a video call from Amber. "Hey!" I greeted her and I realized Sulli is in the call, too. "Woah, guys. You're up early."
"Of course!" Amber grinned. "Just want to check on you."
"Is that our baby Rain?" Sulli squealed as she tried to look closely at her phone. "Oh, sweet baby Rain! You're so handsome, aren't you?" She started to baby talk the dog through the phone and I just rolled my eyes until she's finished. Really. Sulli has a hard time focusing on things. "Oh! Is she there yet?" Sulli suddenly asked.
I looked around the place. "No, not yet."
"Maybe she won't come today?" Amber suggested, looking worried. "Baek, you know we could always message her on Insta—"
Suddenly, Rain started growling and when I looked to where his anger is directed to, I saw Oh Seoyoon approaching the cafe. She's wearing another expensive-looking dress under a coat but even from a distance, I could already see my necklace sticking out from her neckline. "I gotta go," I told my friends and pressed the 'End' button without waiting for their response.
Oh Seoyoon is alone and before she could even reach the cafe door, I already moved to block her way. She looks startled as she regards me with surprise. "Who—"
"Hey," I forced a small smile. "W-We met here yesterday?"
Seoyoon looked at me suspiciously. "Oh yeah. You're that stupid guy who ruined my dress. I remember," she narrowed her eyes in a glare. "What do you want?"
I basically ignored her insults and felt my eyes fall on her neck. The necklace Park Chanyeol gave me is just a simple one. Nothing fancy, nothing shiny. Just a simple, silver necklace with a simple pendant. A robber won't even bother looking at my necklace twice, especially when he's after something more expensive. But that's my necklace. My fiancé gave it to me. I can't lose it. Not ever.
"That necklace you're wearing," I started, pointing at the jewelry around her neck. "It's mine."
Oh Seoyoon flushed red and she clasped the necklace protectively with one hand. "T-That's ridiculous!" she exclaims. "How could something so pretty belong to you, huh? Who do you think you are?"
"What?" I can't believe this btch. "Look— I'm not accusing you or anything. It was my fault! I dropped it," I held out a hand. "Please... Just give it back."
"Are you crazy?!" Seoyoon hissed. "So you're not just a beggar, huh? You're basically robbing me right now, do you not realize that? Thief!"
I gritted my teeth together and tried so, so hard not to strangle her. What the fck is this chick blabbering on about? Rain continued barking angrily at Seoyoon and I held unto his leash tightly. "That's not even yours," I said, annoyed already. "You just found it lying on the ground and now you're acting like some btch who bought it from Gucci! Give that back!"
"No!" She steps away from me. "And how would you know I didn't actually buy it from Gucci, huh? How would you even know?!"
"Because that's mine, you stupid annoying shthead!"
Rain is barking louder and I have to pick him up because he's already tugging so hard on the leash. I caressed his fur until he calms down and when I gave Seoyoon another death glare, I realized she isn't looking at me anymore. She let out a gasp, staring just above my shoulder. Where is she looking at? Suddenly nervous, I swallowed the heavy lump in my throat then slowly looked back at the cafe door.
"Byun Baekhyun?"
My lips gaped open in shock. "Park Chan?"
"What are you doing here?" We asked each other in unison.
Park Chanyeol shook his head, trying to shake off the confusion. "I went to get you some morning coffee," he held out a paper bag. "What are you doing here?"
I hugged Rain closer, seeking for comfort, and he rested his head on my shoulder as if he understands my need, "Well, I—" I turned to Seoyoon who is now staring at me in surprise. Did she just hear my name? Or... acting like the complete idiot that she is?
My fiancé followed my gaze and the look on his face tells me he didn't notice Oh Seoyoon there until just now. He looks confused again. "Why—" and then something might have caught his eyes because they definitely turned sharper, almost angry. His jaw tensed and without saying anything, my fiancé walked towards the Seoyoon. Chanyeol stopped near enough to reach up and remove the necklace off her neck with a sharp pull. It might have stung because Oh Seoyoon obviously flinched as she stepped away.
Chanyeol stared at the necklace in his hand, glaring. "This isn't yours," he said in a low, controlled voice. "How did you get this?"
"I-I—" Seoyoon is already looking at me with fear. "I-I'm sorry—"
"Did you steal from my fiancé?" Chanyeol hissed, glaring down at her. And I swear he is seriously angry. "I could throw you to jail, do you not know that?"
Oh Seoyoon looks like she's about to cry so I immediately stepped in, grabbing Chanyeol's arm. "Chan," I tugged at his coat. "Let's just go— I'm starving... Seriously!"
"No," he says darkly. "This lady right here just took something that isn't hers and—"
"Babe, come on," I practically begged and I have to put Rain down just so I could make him help me. As if understanding what I'm trying to do, our dog started biting on Chanyeol's coat, pulling him towards us. "Please, Park Chan..." I continued pulling Chanyeol by the arm and when he realized I really want to go already, he just sighed and retreated. But not before giving Oh Seoyoon another sharp glance.
When I followed Chanyeol to his car, I realized it's a new one so maybe that's the reason why I wasn't able to recognize it a while ago. But Rain was basically super restless just before Seoyoon came, trying his best to enter the cafe. He must have known Chanyeol was just around the area. I pulled Rain to my lap and hugged him close to my chest, "You were so brave," I whispered to his ear. "Thank you, Rain."
"How about me?" Chanyeol gave me an amused look. All the anger and annoyance are definitely gone now. "Don't tell me I won't me receiving any 'thank you', Byun Baek."
I pouted, looking down. "I'm sorry I lost it," I whispered. I was right. Park Chanyeol isn't even mad at me. But is he disappointed? Did I hurt him somehow? God. I can't even look at him.
"You did," he sighed. "But that's okay. We got it back, anyway."
"Aren't you disappointed with what happened?" I asked quietly.
"Hhmmm," Chanyeol paused, thinking. Then he held up his hand, pressing his thumb and index finger together until they slightly touch. "Only a little bit."
I pressed my lips together so hard just to keep a sob from coming out. "I'm really sorry, Park Chan," I whispered and I swear it's almost inaudible. Rain lets out a low whine before trying to hug me back, his head pressed against my neck. He licks my face and when a sob suddenly escaped my lips, it's like the dam just broke open and I'm already crying like a baby.
"Oh, honey," Chanyeol chuckles as he reached over to pull me into a hug. "No— Okay, I take back what I said. I'm not disappointed. At all! So don't cry now, okay?" He kissed my hair and caressed my back, soothing me.
Why the fck am I crying? I suddenly just want to kick myself.
"But you said—"
"I take it back, I take it back," Chanyeol kissed my cheek, his face amused. "Don't cry now, love."
I nodded and let him comfort me.
Huh?
Did I just... turn the situation around?
"What the fck?" I muttered between sniffs. "I'm so spoiled."
Park Chanyeol lets out a wholehearted laugh. "You are," he agreed with a nod. "You're lucky you're cute."
Huh.
I am cute.
"I'm really sorry, Park Chan," I muttered more seriously this time as I felt him hold me closer.
My fiancé pulled back so he could gently plant a soft kiss on my forehead. "I love you, too, Byun Baek."
