Chapter 8
The food came out. It looked so delicious!
"Enjoy you guys. Call me if you need anything." The woman gave us a warm smile and left to the kitchen.
I immediately dug my fork into the pasta. The melted cheese, the perfectly cooked pasta wrapped around my fork sent my nose wild as I breathed in the delicious smell. I stuffed it in my mouth and felt so satisfied. This probably has to be the best pasta I've ever eaten.
"You look happy," Natsu smiled.
"This pasta is really good," I said, with a stuffed mouth. He laughed at my childish antics.
"I'm glad you're enjoying it. Eat as much as you want. It's all on me."
"I can't do that. That's too much-"
"Luce, it's what friends are for. Let me treat you today."
"Fine, but I'll pay you back."
"No you won't, you're just going to sit there and eat your heart out." He smiled.
I smiled while taking another bite out of my pasta. Of course I'm going to pay him back, I can't start depending on someone who may not be in life much longer.
"Hey Natsu?"
"Yes?"
"Why did you want to become an artist?" I said, trying to make conversation.
He seemed taken aback by my question, but then he faced me with the most saddest smile I've ever seen, "I guess it's because of my mom, when me and my brother were little she taught us about painting and sculpting, it was my favorite thing to do with her, but ever since she got sick, she really isn't able to paint anymore and because of that I kinda lost my passion." He rested his chin in his hand, "if it wasn't for her then I wouldn't be who I am today."
"Your mother sounds like a nice person." I said, slurping my noodles.
"She is, I would love for you to meet her one day."
"Wow, we just met a couple days ago and you're already inviting me to your mom's house. I feel special."
He chuckled, "so enough about me, what about you?"
"What about me?"
"What are your hobbies? What do you like to do on your free time? Your family?"
"Well, I love to read and write on my free time."
"Ooh, another bookworm. I have a friend who's exactly like that."
"Yeah writing is my passion."
"So what about your family? Any brother or sisters?"
"As far as I know, I'm the only child."
"What about you're mom and dad?"
"Umm..." I finished the rest of my pasta and pushed the plate foward, "I'm not really on good terms with my mom and I don't see my dad often."
"Oh, I don't see my dad often either."
"What happened to your dad?"
"He remarried and moved across the country. I only get to see him in the summer, but when I do I don't even get end up hanging out with him, he's always working."
"Must be hard."
"Yeah I just wish he would actually start caring about me."
"You and me both." I whispered.
One of the girls came out of the kitchen with two slices of cakes, "It's on the house. I hope you two are enjoying yourselves. "
"Thanks Lis."
She waved and went back into the kitchen.
"I hope you know she's just spying on us." He whispered.
"I kinda figured that. I saw a couple of heads peeking out of the door for about an hour now." I stared down at the delicious cake at my plate waiting for me to devour it, "this looks so delicious." I took my fork and dug into the cake and took my first bite.
Oh my god! I'm in heaven.
Each bite I took, it was like an explosion of flavor exploded into my mouth. I closed my eyes to savor each moment I had with this cake.
Until I heard someone laughing making me come back into reality.
"What?" I asked.
He chuckled, "It's just I didn't know someone could enjoy cake like that."
"I haven't had cake in years."
"I can see." I saw him glance at his phone and stood up, "Let's get going, I don't want your parents to worry too much."
Trust me, they're not worried at all.
He paid for the meal and led me out to his car. He rushed in front of me so he could open the door for me.
This is actually starting to feel like a date.
He got in and started the car. He turned on the radio and started our drive home.
He took the long way, which meant going through downtown. I heard it was beautiful at this time of night, but I'll never be able to get that full experience.
He turned on the radio, "I has a really great time tonight."
"Me too. The most fun I had in a long time."
"We should do it again sometime."
"What do you suggest we do next time?"
"I don't know, maybe, the art show this weekend?"
Really?
"Natsu, I can't."
"Why? I really want you to come."
He pulled into his driveway, "can you please come? Ill do anything."
"There are so many other people you can ask, why me?"
"Because I want you to come with me."
I stayed silent. I don't want to tell him why I really can't go, but I don't want to go somewhere where I don't understand what's going on and I can't even enjoy the full experience.
There's no reason for me to go.
"Please Luce? Please go with me?"
Oh no, not those.
Not... the puppy eyes.
"I'm not going to fall for that." I crossed my arms and looked away from his eyes.
"Come on Luce, please?" I struggled to not give into his child acts right now.
How dare he pull the puppy eyes out on me.
"Please, please, please, please, please..."
This went on for five minutes.
I can't take it anymore!
"If I say yes will you shut up."
"Yes." His eyes lit up.
I sighed, "fine, I'll go."
"Yes! I won!"
"Don't push it Natsu."
"Sorry."
"I guess I should go home now."
"Wait!" He rushed out of his car to open the door for me.
"I could have just opened it."
"I'm being a gentlemen." He closed the door behind me.
He walked me to my front door, "I could've walked by myself you know."
"I know, but I needed to make sure you were going to get here safe."
"Your house is right across from mine."
"You don't know what could happen. This world is a crazy place."
"I guess you're right." I turned to open my door but he turned me toward him, gently, grabbing my hands.
"Thanks for tonight."
"N-No problem."
"Goodnight Luce." He walked back over to his house.
"Goodnight, Natsu." I whispered.
