Chapter Five
~Iris' POV~
I arrived 'home' before my uncle. It didn't take me long to finish my mountain of homework before losing myself in a good horror book. At around dinner time my uncle returned to the apartment. The door shut rather loudly and I sighed heavily before setting my book atop my nightstand and turning my attention to my bedroom door as I heard him approaching loudly.
"Iris!" He yelled my name angrily. The door of my bedroom flew open and he seemed somewhat shocked to see me sitting atop my bed looking at him expectantly.
"Yes?" I tapped my foot impatiently.
"What were the rules?" He growled.
"Honestly, I can't recall there were far too many." I shrugged.
A vein in his temple began to throb. "I got a call from your school."
"Congrats." I sat up a little straighter, not backing down.
"They said you shoved a boy in a locker." He shot.
"Yep."
His eyes grew wide. Had he expected me to lie about it? "Why?!"
"He was annoying." I said simply.
"You're in big trouble young lady." He growled.
I rolled my eyes, "please tell me how you can make my life any more unbearable." I scoffed. "Being here with you is already punishment enough."
"Iris!"
"Are we done here?" I picked up the book off my nightstand and flopped back atop my bed to read.
"We are most certainly not done here!" Uncle Vlad snapped and made a move to grab the book from my hand.
I pulled it out of his reach and threw him a scowl. "You can save your lecture, never been one to learn anything from anyone yelling at me. Anything else?"
"You're getting involved in some extracurricular activities at school and you'll be serving detention before school the rest of this week." He snatched the book from my hands using his quirk.
I shot him a glare. There was a faint prickling sensation in the back of my mind as I became hyper aware of the blood coursing through his veins. If I activated my quirk, I could bend it to my will.
"And you shouldn't be reading this stuff." He huffed as he took one look at the book he'd confiscated.
"I'm not joining in school activities, nice try." I folded my arms across my chest.
"Too bad, it's already been arranged, you'll be expected to attend, if you don't you'll be serving more detentions and I'll arrange for court ordered community service." He threatened.
Apparently Vlad Squarepants could make my life more miserable. I threw him a dark look, "what clubs?"
"Track and sewing club."
"What?!"
"It's not up for discussion." He turned to leave, "wash up for dinner, it'll be ready soon."
"I'm not hungry." I growled and dug another book out of my bag.
"Iris, hand it over." He snapped.
Anger bubbled up inside of me and I flung it at him like a frisbee with enough force it soared right past his raised hand to catch it and clipped him on the temple. He fumbled to catch it as it fell toward the floor.
"Any more?" He grumbled.
I emptied my bag and flung all of my books at him in a fit of rage. He managed to catch 3 of the twenty and was now sporting a busted lip.
"You could really use an attitude adjustment, young lady." He struggled to gather all of my horror and mystery books up.
"Go play in traffic." I hissed and rolled over on my bed turning my back to him.
"Iris!"
I ignored him.
He left my room.
My phone buzzed.
D: Hey kiddo, how was your first day at the new school?
I: Fine. Could you send me some virtual copies of all of Stephen King's books?
D: Sure thing. Did you finish all the books you brought with you already? We can go to the bookstore on Sunday before or after the movies if you need more.
I: No, apparently Uncle Vlad has a problem with my choice of reading material.
D: Sorry honey. Links with the digital copies are in your email. Happy Reading.
I: Thanks Dad!
I got about a fourth of the way through It when there was a knock at the door. I ignored it.
The door slowly opened, "Iris, come get something to eat." My Uncle stepped into my room, he appeared to be struggling to keep his voice soft and calm. Guess he had a temper too. Probably ran in the family.
"I told you I'm not hungry." I said dismissively and continued reading on my phone.
"What are you doing?" He asked, his voice sounding strained. He was trying to stay calm.
"Reading something my Dad sent me, is that okay with you? Or are you going to keep me from communicating with my parents?" I shot.
"No, of course I wouldn't do that." He sighed. "I'm sorry for losing my temper..." He trailed off to give me a chance to apologize.
"Great. Thanks." I mumbled. He wasn't getting an apology from me.
"Do you have anything else you want to say?" He asked tensely.
"Nope." I shrugged.
"You don't think your behavior earlier was out of line?" He frowned.
"Not even remotely." I smirked.
"Iris." He sighed.
"Goodnight." I said dismissively.
He rubbed his temples but said nothing more before turning and exiting the room. Despite his best efforts to keep calm he ended up slamming my door shut. I smirked and kept reading.
