𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗘𝗕𝗘'𝗦 𝗨𝗣𝗦𝗘𝗧 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗘 was not something Olivia wanted to see on a Monday. This morning Olivia had been called to the principal's office and had been told she was assigned a student to tutor. She had no idea when she even volunteered herself for this but Principal Bradford gave her no choice, he just shoved the information in her hand and told her to get lost.
Phoebe, however, was upset for two reasons. The first reason was she hadn't been picked from their honors math class to tutor someone and how good it would look on their Hero University applications. To which Olivia said she had no patience to tutor an underachiever.
Two, that Olivia would be missing out on a mall trip with her and Cherry.
"I still don't understand why I wasn't picked to tutor someone," Phoebe said pouting as Olivia joined her at her locker. She and Cherry were getting their things to head out but Olivia still had that extra hour of after-school tutoring.
"Maybe Mr. Pines doesn't want you making someone cry again," Olivia shrugged and Phoebe glared remembering the incident in their honors math class.
Cherry giggled from beside her. "Well, we will have a strawberry smoothie in your honor,"
Olivia nodded. "Don't have too much fun without me ladies," The girl waved goodbye to her friends before heading towards the library.
Olivia wondered who this poor soul was that was trying to desperately get their grades up before their report cards on Friday. The girl had worries of her own, sure her C in history wasn't the worse but she still wanted to raise it.
Though she would have to worry about that later, she thought as she entered the library. Olivia almost sighed when she saw Max sitting at the exact table she was supposed to meet the other person at.
"I don't suppose this is a coincidence and you just happen to accidentally stumble into the library," Olivia said as she approached the boy.
"Well, there goes my plan to flirt my way out of this tutoring session," Max mumbled to himself, confirming that he was in fact the person she was going to tutor. Max turned to smile at the girl. "You look pretty today, Liv. Is that new lipgloss?" He tried to flirt with the girl.
Olivia only raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Max nodded. "Yeah, I knew that wasn't going to work. How about you just tell Principal Bradford we had a wonderful study date and we can go home,"
Max moved to get up but Olivia held a hand to his shoulder stopping him in his tracks. "Sit back down," Max sighed before doing what he was told. Olivia moved to set her things down and sit in front of him before taking the information their principal had given her.
"God, Max, what are you even passing besides art?" Olivia questioned after reading over some of his grades. She was only there to help him with math but considering the scores, he needed help with everything.
Max sighed, "Come on, those numbers don't matter. Especially when I'm a supervillain,"
"Not yet," Olivia pointed out, making Max glare at her.
"But I will be, and you're on my list," Max pointed at her.
Olivia rolled her eyes, "I'm so scared,"
"Whatever, can we hurry this up? I have supervillain things to do," Max said.
Olivia crossed her arms. "Like what? More trash in Phoebe's locker? Or are you going to put itching powder in your dad's pants?"
Max snapped his fingers. "No, but thank you for the idea. I'm building a rocket, Phoebe ruined my last one," He explained.
Olivia perked up at this. "Okay, let me see your schematics," When Max seemed hesitant she rolled her eyes. "I'm not going to stop you I just want to see,"
Olivia held her hand out and Max finally gave in reaching into his backpack to hand the girl the schematics. He watched Olivia carefully as she bit her lip and went over his work. It took her a second before she looked back up at Max with a blank stare.
"Max, this is math..." She slowly began to explain. "And you did it right,"
Max snatched the schematics away from the girl. "I told you this number stuff doesn't matter," He said shoving the paper back into his bag.
"Yeah, but maybe if you applied yourself maybe you could be as good as Phoebe is in school," Olivia tried to reason with him. She could tell from the way his face fell she had said something wrong. Olivia was aware of how people compared the twins she had heard their own parents do it all the time, and though she didn't mean it like that it definitely didn't help to bring his twin up.
"Whatever, can you just tell Bradford I was here? I have villain things to do," Max said getting up he didn't even give her a chance to answer before he left. Olivia sighed pinching the bridge of her nose.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛 𝗠𝗔𝗫 𝗦𝗘𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗗 to be over what had occurred in the library that week Olivia was still planning on apologizing to him. Right after her parents saw her report card, she got wind of the big C that was supposed to be on it because her history teacher had warned her. Olivia had done everything to bring it up but her bad test score was bringing it down.
So, she put on a brave face as she opened her front door. Her face changed into one of shock when her parents stood there with party hats and noise makers smiling at the girl.
"There's my straight-A student," Carla said approaching her daughter and wrapping her in a tight hug.
"Your what?" Olivia questioned, though she was muffled by her mom's hug.
"I knew you could do it!" Markus said as Olivia was released from her mother's grasp. Markus wrapped her in a hug. "These are the perfect grades to get into Hero University, that is of course if you want to go,"
Olivia nodded, "Yeah, do you mind if I see that?" Olivia didn't wait for an answer as she grabbed her report card from her father's grasp. Her eyes scanned over her grades and they were right. Her big daunting C she was expecting now an A.
Olivia looked confused before it hit her. "Max," She said out loud making her parents look at her weirdly. "I mean... Max also got straight A's ... I should go congratulate him,"
"Okay, well don't be long we have to cut the cake," Carla smiled.
"We got it in the shape of an A," Markus said excitedly. Olivia only nodded before she raced to the Thunderman's next door. Olivia ran past the house to Max's open window that led into his room.
"You!" She shouted before climbing down the rocks in his room. Max stopped his pacing to look at the girl. "Why did you change my grade?"
"Wow, not even a thank you? Come on, Liv, a C in history? You can do better than that," Max told the girl before shaking his head.
"Well, I was going to apologize to you for what I said on Monday but now I'm just going to hit you," Olivia said before using the report card paper in her hand to hit Max's shoulder.
Max flinched before grabbing her wrist, "Stop that! We got bigger problems,"
"We?" Olivia raised her eyebrows.
"I got put in your nerdy math class," Max told her as he began pacing again.
"Okay, just sleep through it?" Olivia suggested.
"I was going to do that then Phoebe said I couldn't keep up so now I have to crush her!" Max said. "Talk to me, what's going on in that class?"
Olivia crossed her arms. "Well, we're bout to do the Math Bowl," When Max gave a blank expression she began to explain. "We all pick two teams and then we compete by doing math equations like game show style but math,"
Max nodded, "Hmm, so all I gotta do is be a team captain and beat whatever team Phoebe is on,"
"Good luck, Mr. Pines has picked those like a month in advance," Olivia told him.
"Oh, I'll find a way and you'll be on my team," Max said evilly knowing that would bother Phoebe even more.
Olivia rolled her eyes. "Leave me out of this," She moved to leave Max's room the way she came.
"You owe me!" Max said.
"I didn't ask you to change my grade!" Olivia yelled back once she made it out the window.
"I'll pick you first!" Max challenged. Olivia only rolled her eyes as she made her back home.

𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗔 showed up to their honors math class like any other day but only this time she was prepared to see Max there with a big smirk on his face. Except he wasn't there yet, it was only her usual classmates there early. Olivia figured the boy had realized how much work this would actually be and gave up.
The crowd of students surrounded the whiteboard as they timed Phoebe. The girl was doing a particularly hard math question. Olivia shook her head, letting her friend bask in the glory that she loved so much as she took her seat.
"Done!" Phoebe shouted putting down the dry-erase marker.
Evan stopped his stopwatch. "And a new record," He said and the rest of the class clapped for her friend.
"Phoebe, you're awesome. I really hope we're on the same math bowl team," Their other classmate, Sarah, said. "I'm great at quadratic equations. Unlike some people," Sarah turned to glare at Evan.
"That was one time," Evan tried to argue. "And it was a heavy pollen day,"
"All right, class," Mr. Pines said finally entering the classroom, making all the students take their seats. "Very exciting news. I have finally chosen our two math bowl team captains," He announced.
"And the first team captain is, Phoebe Thunderman," Mr. Pines smiled pointing at the girl. The class clapped for her. "And facing off against Phoebe is a new student who begged me this morning in the parking lot to be the other team captain, Max Thunderman,"
"Present!" Max said finally sauntering into the room.
"Oh no," Olivia mumbled shaking her head. She had been dumb to think Max would give up, if there was anything that boy was it was persistent especially when it came to bothering his twin sister.
"And I brought cotton candy for everyone," Max smiled. The students gasped in excitement as they all moved to grab some of Max's cotton candy before they began chanting his name much like they had been chanting Phoebe's earlier.
Phoebe looked at Olivia with wide eyes and the girl only shrugged. Phoebe angrily stood up and grabbed Sarah and gestured for Olivia to follow her. Olivia sighed going to stand with the girls as they watched Max converse with their classmates.
"Why does my brother have to ruin everything?" Phoebe said, her arms crossed over herself.
"That's your brother, he is one prime number," Sarah sighed dreamily.
"Yeah, zero," Phoebe said.
Sarah shook her head, "Zero's not a prime—"
"I know zero's not a prime number," Phoebe held her hand up to stop the girl.
"Just don't let him get to you, come on you know he's trying to psych you out. It's Max," Olivia tried to tell Phoebe. Instead of listening to her Phoebe stomped over to where her twin stood.
"Are you close to Max?" Sarah snapped her head turning to Olivia.
"Not at all," Olivia lied moving to go back to her seat behind Evan before Sarah could ask her any more questions about the boy.
"All right, everyone, take your seats," Mr. Pines said his mouth full of cotton candy.
"Max, there's a seat open by me," Sarah said excitedly before pushing Evan, who actually sat next to her, onto the ground. "Sorry, Evan, didn't see you there,"
Olivia held her hand out to the boy to help him off the ground. "Thanks, Liv," Evan said dusting himself off and taking a seat behind her.
Max, now sitting in front of her, turned around in his seat with a smile. "Happy to see me?"
"I've been happier," Olivia sassed.
"Oh come on, Livvy, aren't you excited to be on my math team?" He asked.
"We haven't even picked our teams and who's to say you're going first?" Olivia challenged.
"All right, first to pick for their math bowl team is Max," Mr. Pines suddenly said and Olivia put her head in her hands.
"I pick Olivia!" Max said without hesitation turning to smile at Phoebe who was glaring at him again. "Cotten candy?" Max turned back around as he held out the treat to Olivia.
Olivia ignored his smug smile and the intense glare from Sarah as she took the cotton candy and pushed Max back around his seat to leave her alone.

𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 Evan and Sarah outside the Thunderman's door. The other two unfortunate souls had been picked for Max's math bowl team. Well, Sarah actually squeezed her way in here somehow, claiming the other guy they picked had suddenly had an emergency. Olivia didn't question what it was but she knew Sarah was involved somehow.
She didn't have time to think much about it when Max opened the door with a smile. "Up top brainiacs!" Max said excitedly to the other two holding his hands up for a high-five which the two reciprocated.
"Sarah?" Phoebe questioned as the redhead made her way into the house. "I thought you were sick?"
"I'm love-sick," Sarah sighed dreamily, looking at Max. "And the only cure is to be on Max's team,"
Max looked at her awkwardly. "Okay, let's go to my lair," He said making his way to the slide that led to his room.
"Lair? That sounds dangerous, I should call my mom," Evan said panicking. Sarah pushed the boy out of the way, smiling at Max.
"This is going to be a long night," Max mumbled. Olivia had fully turned her body around to mouth a help me to Phoebe. Seeing this Max grabbed Olivia's wrist putting her in between him and Sarah before going down the slide. Olivia was next as she made her way down the slide to Max's room.
The girl quickly got off of his bed dusting herself off. She couldn't help but look around his room hoping Max had done everything to get rid of any superhero evidence. Sarah followed and the girl looked around the room in awe.
"Wow, that was like being sucked into a wormhole," Evan said once he landed on Max's bed, hugging his backpack tightly.
"Cool room, Max," Sarah said still in awe.
"Oh, it's a typical teenage bedroom," Max tried to shrug off.
"Oh, sweet!" Evan said standing by the rocket Max had been working on it. Olivia set her bag down on the floor and walked over to it. The same one he had shown her the schematics for last week.
"Evan, don't touch that!" Max said quickly pushing the boy back.
"Why?" He asked before gasping. "Is this a real rocket?"
"No Einstein, it's a corn muffin," Dr. Colosso suddenly spoke. Olivia looked at Max with wide eyes to see him sharing the same expression.
"Who said that?" Sarah asked. Max quickly ran over to Colosso's cage putting the blanket over it.
"I did, Sarah!" He turned around. "I like doing funny voices!" He tried to imitate the rabbit.
"That's Max for you," Olivia tried to laugh off. Sarah seemed to buy it because she sighed dreamily.
Evan was still fixated on the rocket. "This thing must need an incredible amount of thrust to break through the inner atmosphere," He nodded.
"Oh, it's a standard 30-kilogram rocket and it requires 1,100 newtons to achieve escape velocity," Max shrugged. Olivia couldn't help be give him a look at the use of his brain power, something she didn't see often but appreciated.
Sarah once again sighed dreamily. "With a brain like that, our kids are going to be mathematical prodigies," Sarah said happily making everyone pause. The girl nervously looked around. "I mean... cool room!"
Olivia patted Max's shoulder. "Oh, the things you will go through to get back a Phoebe," She shook her head.
"You have no idea," He said through gritted teeth before sighing and getting ready for the night ahead.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
𝗜𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 for the math bowl and Olivia was trying not to rot her brain with math. Their study sessions had run smoothly she knew their team was good but she knew Phoebe's team was just as good. It was a good thing Olivia was doing this for fun, though her friends did have a habit of turning everything into an exhausting competition.
Olivia walked into their classroom and smiled at Phoebe as she approached her. Phoebe saw her best friend and sighed. "Sucks that you're my enemy today,"
Olivia shrugged. "Only for a couple of hours, then we're going to the mall," She smiled at her friend happy that her competitive nature hadn't made Phoebe turn on her this time.
"I can't imagine the pain you've had to endure. I mean studying with Max?" Phoebe tried to scoff.
"We actually got a lot done. He's pretty smart... when he wants to be," Olivia told her honestly. This obviously wasn't the answer Phoebe was looking for because her face fell.
"This is just ... my space. He has all his inventions and he feels like he belongs. I have this," Phoebe opened up.
Olivia nodded. "Well, maybe you should tell him that,"
Phoebe didn't really get to contemplate it much longer before Max walked in. He fist-bumped each of his teammates and made his way to where the girls were standing. Max still had his fist up as he approached Olivia. The girl rolled her eyes before giving in and returning it.
"Look who decided to show up," Phoebe said, her competitive persona coming out. "I hope you brought your A-game because Phoebe is greater than Max,"
Max scoffed. "Well, I hope you brought your calculator because Max times awesome is geometrically —" He paused trying to think of something. "Man, I gotta work on these math slams,"
Olivia sighed. "I'm leaving before this gets ugly,"
"Well, Phoebe's already here so I don't think it could get any uglier," Max said confidently. "Still got my normal slams," He high-fived himself. Olivia hit his arm before making her way back to where Sarah and Evan were standing and letting the siblings hash it out.
After whatever talk they had that ended in them doing their handshake Max joined his teammates. Sarah waved at him dreamily. Max nodded back slightly scared before grabbing Olivia's arm and switching where she stood in between Evan and Sarah to stand next to him to keep Sarah at least a person away from him.
"Welcome to Hiddenville High's Annual Math Bowl! Math Bowl! Math bowl!" Mr. Pines, who was all dressed up for this occasion, said excitedly. "A.k.a the only day, I'm truly alive. Math! Ahh!" He said excitedly. Olivia and Max shared a look trying to contain their laughter.
"Now, let's meet our two teams!" He continued. "The Trig Monkeys!" He pointed to Max's team and they cheered. "And the Algebrats!" Phoebe's team cheered. Mr. Pines pressed the applause button on his soundboard.
"Now, let's get today's question courtesy of our good friend, Arithmo Tick!" Mr. Pines continued. He pressed his soundboard to play some upbeat music and a teacher who had definitely had to be paid to do this came dancing in dressed as a tick.
Mr. Pines grabbed the cards from his hand and stopped the music with a smile. "Thank you, Arithmo. Now let's begin with our first question. Name the theory that states: If A equals B and B equals C then—"
Phoebe hit her buzzer. "The theory of transitivity!" She answered.
"Correct!" Mr. Pines shouted. "Score one for the Algebrats!" He played the music and Arithmo danced around.
"If X equals the square root of 1,369, what the heck is X?" Mr. Pines asked the next question. The teams went to work, and after a second Max hit his buzzer.
"37!" He answered.
"Correct! And Max's trig monkeys are on the board!" Mr. Pines pressed the music and Arithmo danced around again.
The game continued like this for a while. Each team went back to back with the answers. Arithmo danced around until the poor guy was blue in the face and sweating profusely. It was clear how competitive the twins had gotten, both of them over-celebrating when they got the answer correct.
"Oh, yeah! A tie! Ah, love a tie," Mr. Pines said once he looked at the scores. "Now, who can tell me what is the surface of a sphere whose circumference is 6 centimeters?" Olivia quickly got to work like everyone else.
The girl's head shot up when she heard the sound of a buzzer. Everyone looked to Phoebe's team.
"Wait! I didn't mean to hit the buzzer! My hand must've slipped!" Ashley tried to defend herself. Olivia quickly looked to Max who had a smirk on his face.
"Oh, sorry. A false buzzer means that the question goes to the opposing team," Mr. Pines said. Evan and Sarah quickly went back to work but Olivia crossed her arms.
"Uh, Mr. Pines!" Phoebe cut in. "That was a super question and Ashley didn't have the powers to answer it, because she gets shy in public," Phoebe said through gritted teeth glaring at Max.
Mr. Pines only looked at her confusedly. "Yeah, I have no idea what you're saying," He turned to Max's team. "Trig Monkeys, still waiting on the answer," Olivia sighed with an apologetic look at Phoebe before she went back to work.
She didn't get much time to work before her right hand shot up and her thumb ended up in her mouth. Olivia looked around confusedly to see the rest of her teammates doing the same and Phoebe had a smug smile on her face.
"Okay, looks like that question stumped everyone, so let's move on to the next question," Mr. Pines said looking confusedly at the two teams. "Who can solve Arithmo Tick's equation?" He pointed to it.
The teams got to solving it and Olivia hoped that there would be no more use of superpowers.
Tyler hit his buzzer. "I got it! The answer is—" Suddenly his mouth shut on his own and his words were muffled. Max had his hand up keeping his lips sealed as the boy struggled to get out the words.
"Oooh, I'm sorry those aren't words," Mr. Pines said. Their teacher looked between them again before shaking his head. "Uh, you know what? Maybe the stress is getting to you kids. Let's take a five and then we can settle this with a sudden death tiebreaker round," Mr. Pines pressed the soundboard and menacing music played.
Then it played again. And again. Until the students looked at him confusedly. "I'm sorry, my buttons stuck. I tested this all weekend," He said pressing it again trying to get the music to stop.
Olivia only shook her head before putting her pencil down and taking a five. She made her way out into the hallway to the water fountain. She pulled her hair back and bent over to get a drink.
"You seem annoyed," Max's voice came from beside her.
The brunette girl straightened up. "Great observation," Olivia said sarcastically as she wiped the water from her mouth.
"Come on, Liv. You said yourself I need to be as good as Phoebe," He tried to get her to smile.
Olivia glared. "Those were not my exact words, but that's what you took them as," Olivia sighed remembering her want to apologize to Max before he went off and changed her grade. "Look, Max. You are insanely smart, even if your grades don't show that. You've proved it. I'm sorry I compared you to her."
Max opened his mouth to say something but Olivia held up her finger. "But — you don't need to almost expose your powers and ruin her favorite class, a class you don't even care about,"
Max shook his head. "I didn't care until both of you thought I couldn't cut it," Max explained.
Olivia shook her head. "I never thought that," She answered honestly. "Look, let's just go back in there this is getting too sentimental for me," Olivia waved her hand around as if to feel the tension before giving Max an awkward smile and making her way back into her math classroom.
Sarah and Evan soon joined her. Max still had his head in the game as he high-fived them. After checking his watch Mr. Pines pressed his now-fixed soundboard and dramatic music played.
"And that sound means it's time for the sudden death round!" Mr. Pines said as Phoebe and Max joined their team. Max sent Olivia a small smile as he stood next to her. Her words and now Phoebe's ringing in his head.
"Now this question can only be answered by the team captains," Mr. Pines explained. "Now, you get it right, you win. Get it wrong, you die," He said dramatically. Sarah pushed around Olivia to grab ahold of Max.
Mr. Pines laughed. "I'm just kidding, you just lose. That's all that happens," He waved off before picking up the last question card. "Now, Max and Phoebe, for all the marbles. Who can tell me, how many Newtons of thrust does it take for a standard 30-kilogram rocket to achieve escape velocity?"
Max buzzed in first. "Max?" Mr. Pines asked.
"You know this!" Evan said excitedly.
"It's perfect," Sarah giggled.
"Tick is ticking!" Mr. Pines warned him about the timer.
Max smiled. "The answer is 11—" He stumbled over his words his eyes on Phoebe's fallen face. Max quickly glanced at Olivia who just shrugged at him. Max sighed. "Eleventy-seven?"
Olivia and Phoebe stared at him confusedly while Mr. Pines stumbled with his answer. "That's not even a thing," Mr. Pines said. "Which means that the Algebrats are the winners!" Mr. Pines shouted before playing that upbeat tune.
Arithmo excitedly handed Phoebe the trophy as the other team cheered. Olivia turned to where Max was supposed to be standing but the boy had already left.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗔 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗙 at Max's window again. The boy who was still working on his rocket looked up as the girl climbed down the rocks. He took off his safety goggles raising his eyebrows at her.
"I wanted to talk to you after the math bowl but you ran off," Olivia shrugged. "And the math bowl dance party was a little too chaotic to even try," She added remembering how Phoebe had brought everyone from their math class including that Tick to dance around in his living room earlier that day. Max wouldn't admit it but it did make him smile.
"I'm sorry I changed your grade," Max finally said.
Olivia shrugged again. "That's unimportant now. It was really nice what you did for Phoebe," Max scoffed. Olivia just shook her head. "Don't even try to lie because the 30-kilogram rocket that needs 1,100 Newtons is right there," She pointed to the rocket he was working on.
Max rolled his eyes. "It was nothing, don't make me gag," He said dramatically.
"It was nice," Olivia said again jumping up on the desk in the middle of his room to sit comfortably. "No, more special math class for you, Einstein?"
Max shook his head. "Nope, leaving that nerd class to Phoebe now,"
"Well, I am going to miss the cotton candy," Olivia joked. A soft and sweet laugh escaped her lips. A laugh that makes Max chuckle under his breath. "Sooo, is the rocket done yet?" Olivia continued, trying to fill the silence.
Max nodded. "Should be. I just put on the finishing touches,"
"Okay, let's launch it," Olivia suggested.
Max looked at her confusedly. "Olivia, this is a villain thing, you're an aspiring superhero,"
"It's just a rocket," Olivia sassed. "Besides you wanted to prove you're so smart so let's see if this thing works," Olivia reach over to tap the rocket with a smile. She looked beside her to see the big red button making her give Max a fake surprised look.
The girl moved her hand to hover over the button. She wasn't going to push it she just wanted to get a reaction out of Max. She did because the boy quickly moved to pull her hand away from the button.
"Fine, but I get to push the button," He glared at her. "Colosso and I were supposed to push it together—"
"Oooh, how romantic," Olivia couldn't hold back the sarcastic comment.
"But I'll just blame you when he wakes up," Max continued ignoring her comment. "Actually," Olivia gave him a confused look before he switched his grip on her wrist to place his hand on top of hers. "That way I can actually blame you,"
"Yeah, yeah, can we push the button already?" Olivia asked.
She followed Max's lead as he guided her hand to press down on the red button. Olivia looked at the rocket as it shot out of the room without a hitch. The pair momentarily forgot their intertwined hands until Max looked down and pulled his hand away from hers quickly.
"Congrats, Einstein, you did it," Olivia complimented ignoring whatever weird seventh-grade deja-vu moment the two just shared.
