Nine
"Dan, I really think we should wait on this." Phil said, pulling nervously at his sleeves and biting his lip. Dan grabbed his hand and squeezed it, trying to calm him down.
Phil had been anxious all last night and this morning about meeting Dan's parents, and Dan had tried everything to get him ready, unsuccessfully of course. He was still a mess of nerves.
"Stop fidgeting, babe. Its not that big a deal."
"Not that big a deal? Its biggest deal of all big deals!"
"Now you're over reacting."
Phil sighed and ran his hand through his hair, making it stand on end. They were walking slowly through the corridors towards Dan's parents room, and truthfully, Dan was nervous about seeing them as well. He hadn't seen them once since the whole dining hall thing, and he wasn't too sure on where they stood.
He didn't have long to dwell on it though, because soon enough they were standing in front of their door. There were small bursts of panic shooting through his stomach, and he tried to not let it show so that Phil wouldn't see. He was already having a tough time himself.
He breathed deeply before knocking on the door, waiting in anticipation and worry. He heard footsteps coming closer, and held his breath as the door swung open and his mum stood there, looking at the both of them in shock.
"Daniel." She said, not moving an inch. "I, uh, we weren't expecting you. Come in, I guess."
She stepped sideways to let them in and closed the door.
Dan had, of course, been in his parents room countless times, but this was Phil's first time, and he was trying to look everywhere at once. Dan could understand because their room was quite impressive. Most people couldn't stop staring.
The room they were standing it was larger than average, at least two times the size as Dan's room, and there was another, bigger room connected to it. Add in their bedroom and attached bathroom, and it had to be at least the second biggest room in all of HQ, besides the Highers chambers.
Phil was looking around, craning his neck so that he could stare at everything at once. His eyes were wide and sparkling, and Dan couldn't help but smile at his curiosity. It was too damn cute.
"Daniel." Dan turned in surprise at the sound of his fathers voice. "What are you doing here?"
"Just wanted to visit you guys. And wanted you to meet my boyfriend." He turned, and gestured to Phil. "And this is him. Mum, dad, this is Phil."
They were silent for a minute, then his mum smiled a bit too brightly and held out her hand. "Well, it's nice to meet you Phil."
Phil smiled back, shaking her hand but still looking a bit anxious.
It was so fucking awkward, but Dan was trying not to let it affect him, because he really wanted this to go right. He wanted his parents to actually like Phil, and not think of him as the boy who made their son run away. And he wanted Phil to like his parents as well, and not be so intimidated by them.
His parents were silent on the other side of the room, his dad sitting in a large chair with his mum standing beside it. No one said anything, no one was smiling except him, and it was a fake smile.
"So, er....how've you guys been?" He said lamely, trying to at least make some sort of conversation.
"How've we been?" His mum said, and Dan knew instantly that it was the wrong question. "You've been gone for a year, Dan. We've been horrible, that's what. You must honestly have no idea what its like to be in our shoes. You just ran off with this.....boy. No note, no explanation. We were near crazy."
Dan winced inwardly at her harsh words, and he knew that they were one hundred percent true. He was an ass for leaving them like that, he hadn't even thought twice about them when he'd done it.
"Mum..." He started, but she interupted him.
"Wait, let me finish." She was almost shouting now, and Phil was staring hard at the floor with his fringe covering his face. "We didn't deserve that, Daniel, and you know it. We are your parents, and we deserve some kind respect.
"We searched so long for you. We refused to give up, day after day, and after a while, we began to give up hope. We thought you were dead. We didn't think you would be so stupid as to let this human boy persuade you into leaving. This weak excuse for a-"
"Don't you talk about Phil that way." Dan said quietly. His hands were balling into fists, and he was trying his hardest to hold his temper. He looked over, and almost snapped when he saw that Phil was crying, the tears running down his face and sliding off of his chin. And his mum's words has cause it.
"You can't honestly be sticking up for him after everything he's done to this family." His mum continued, and Dan stepped closer to her, right in her face.
"You're damn right I am. I fucking love him, and if I chose him over you guys, then it was obviously for a reason. There is nothing you can do to change that, and you'll just have to accept it."
His mum was glaring at him, her eyes flashing, and Dan would've been afraid if it weren't Phil she was dissing so harshly. He was so hoping that it wouldn't be like this, but he had no choice if his parents didn't want to cooperate.
"Dan." His father said quietly. It was the first time he'd said anything the entire time. "Can I talk to you for a minute? In private...."
Dan was a bit hesitant on what his father has to say, but he nodded anyway, and followed him into his parents bedroom. He also didn't want to leave Phil with his mum, lest she go on some murderous rampage, but he saw the look in his fathers eyes and decided to take the risk.
His dad closed the door, but didn't face Dan at first. He took a deep breath and turned.
"I can see that you really love him." He said finally, and that really wasn't what Dan was expecting, but he wasn't complaining.
"What?"
"When you look at him. Its like the way I looked at your mum, when we started going out."
"What's that got to do with anything?" Dan asked, because now he was just confused. His dad moved closer, placing his hands on Dan's shoulders and looking him in the eye.
"I don't hate you for what you did. I was mad at first, yeah, but I will always love you, no matter what. And I'm sure your mum is the same, she's just a bit hysterical right now. And from just watching you and Phil these last few minutes, I can tell you really care for him and he cares for you."
Dan was still kind of flustered from all of it, but he was so damn happy that his father wasn't being as much of a douche as he thought.
"So you....you don't hate him?" He asked, and his dad laughed.
"Course not. Can't say much for your mum though. Sure she'll come around."
Dan launched himself at his dad, wrapping his arms around him nd hugging him tightly. "Thanks dad." He whispered.
"Any time, bear."
They just stood there for a minute, hugging each other, and Dan was just overwhelmed by everything he was feeling. He really had missed his family, and maybe they would still welcome him back with open arms.
His dad eventually pulled away though, but Dan was at his happiest right now and he didn't really mind. They left the room together, and Dan was relieved to see that Phil was still in one piece. Still kinda sad looking, but not harmed. He went over to him and grabbed his hand tightly, squeezing it reassuringly.
"We're leaving now." Dan announced, and he could literally feel Phil relax. His mum stared, stony faced at them, and his dad smiled warmly. He pulled Phil towards the door quickly, and they left, walking down the hall to Dan's room once again.
"That was terrifying." Phil breathed, and he looked so relieved and scared. His face looked so much paler than usual, and he was visibly shaking. Dan stopped in the middle of the hall, pulling Phil into a hug and burying his nose into his hair.
"I'm sorry." He said. "I didn't think it would be that bad. It was a bit stupid, I guess."
Phil didn't say anything, and Dan continued to hold him. It wasn't until a minute later that Dan felt Phil's shoulders shaking and he could tell he was crying.
"Did I really do that?" Phil asked, his voice hoarse. "I took you away from your family?"
"What? No, why would you even think that. Phil, I left on my own you had nothing to do with it."
"But I did." He said. "I'm the one that convinced you to leave with me. You didn't have to, I wanted you to."
"That's the stupidest thing I've evee heard." Dan said. He pulled back slightly, looking Phil straight in the eyes. "It was my decision to leave with you. Please, don't feel like you did it, because its not true."
Phil sniffed. "Are you sure?"
"One hundred percent."
Phil smiled a bit, reaching up and kissing Dan.
"I love you." He said.
"I love you back."
