Kai slipped his sweater onto his shoulders, relaxing beneath its warmth. The sweater was large enough for the sleeves to fall over his fingers, and he wrapped the tips of his fingers around the hems of the sleeves comfortably. It was getting a lot colder, even though it was in the middle of winter already, and Kai got cold easily; therefore, the sweater had to be used often.
Stretching a little as he walked down the hallway, Kai got a clear view of the yard outside. It was covered in the white blanket of snow, which explained why everything had seemed unnaturally quiet this morning. Kai couldn't say he hated snow, he just didn't like being freezing cold; so he didn't go out often when it snowed.
Kai strode into the living room to find Shintaro, Falte, and Chase (all looking comfortably fine) watching Linda with amused looks on their faces. Linda was standing hunched over Abby, who hadn't gotten off the couch yet, her whole body buried under the thick blanket she slept with. Linda was jabbing Abby's side with her finger, complaining that she was cold and wanted to get under the covers too.
Abby's muffled "NO." came from underneath the mountain of blankets, and Linda groaned in exasperation.
"Abby, I'm cold!" she cried, straightening and crossing her arms. "I don't have a sweater. Come on, you're not even sleeping anymore. You can sit up and make room. Scoot over!" She lunged forward and poked Abby's ribs again, making the mound under the blankets wriggle for a moment.
Kai blinked in confusion as Abby grumbled something unintelligible back at Linda. Confused, he looked up at Shintaro and Chase, who knew Abby a little better than Kai did. Chase was smiling bemusedly, and Shintaro had a small grin tugging at his lips.
"What's going on?" Kai asked as he shuffled around Linda to the table, where a plate of grapes was set out.
"I'M GOSH-DARN COLD AND YOU'RE GIRLFRIEND ISN'T BEING NICE, THAT'S WHAT'S GOING ON," Linda yelled angrily from behind him, and Kai heard Abby grunt again.
"Abby gets grumpy when she's cold," Shintaro said plainly, not even glancing in Kai's direction. "She's not giving up her spot."
Which is something she would usually do, Kai noted, turning back to watch. She was definitely in a bad mood, and Kai didn't want to be in the middle of it. "You can have my sweater, Linda," he offered, gesturing to himself.
Linda straightened and sighed. "Are you sure? You look cold too."
"She'll probably want to cuddle with me more than you," Kai said with a shrug. "No offense," he added while shrugging off his sweater and handing it to Linda.
"Make her get up while you're at it," Chase instructed Kai cheerfully. "She needs to wake up fully anyway, and get out of her bad mood. Trust me, she's kinda... creepy when she's in a bad mood." He visibly shuddered as if remembering the last time she had been in one.
"Okay," Kai agreed, sauntering over to the couch and leaning forward to where he was over her head.
"Abby, you've gotta get up," he said softly, touching what he figured was her shoulder.
She shrugged him away with an incoherent grunt. "NO," came her muffled reply. "It's too COLD and I'm still TIRED."
"Come on," Kai said, jabbing her on the back. "It's not that hard to get up. You should get up and eat some breakfast. You can take the blanket with you, if you want."
"NO," Abby grumbled again. "I'm STAYING HERE."
"Oh my word," Kai said gruffly, but he couldn't stop the smile that was crawling onto his face. "Just get up, Abby. It's not that hard." He touched her shoulder again, but she grumbled nothing that he could understand and shrugged him away again.
"Seriously, Abby," Kai said, tapping her head with his knuckles. "It's morning. The sun is up, so you should be too."
"I'M NOT THE SUN, I DON'T HAVE TO BE UP."
"You're my sun," Kai replied smoothly, deciding not to care about the snort of laughter that came from Chase and Falte. "So you should be up and making me feel better." He poked her again.
"NO I'M HIBERNATING FOR THE WINTER LEAVE ME ALONE."
"What?" Kai said, holding back a laugh. Hibernating for the winter? "You're not even an animal, Abby. Just get off the couch already." He kept poking her with each word of the last sentence, making her squirm underneath the blankets.
"UGH UGH UGH, STOP I CAN BE WHAT I WANT TO BE, GO AWAY."
"Just get off the couch!" Kai cried, grabbing her shoulders with his hands and trying to haul her upward. She stubbornly held herself in place, and Kai realized that she was stronger than she let on.
"NO!"
"Yes!"
"NO!"
"Yes!"
"NOOO!"
"Yes!"
"NO!!!! I! AM! HI! BER! NAT! ING!"
"Okay, fine," Kai said flatly, leaning back and crossing his arms across his torso. "I'll do this, then."
He saw Abby shift under the blankets in wary confusion, and as she did, he lunged forward and rolled her sideways, onto her back. The blankets were shoved under her, and as she yelped and tried to roll back over, Kai bent forward quickly.
He wrapped his left arm under her knees and his right under her arms; then straightened and hoisted her up into bridal style against his chest, leaving the blankets behind.
When he smiled deviously down at her, he saw that she was blushing with a frown, her eyebrows furrowed and her mouth drawn into an angry line. She began to wriggle in his arms, kicking her feet with little grunts of exasperation.
"PUT ME DOWN!" she cried, wiggling back and forth in his arms like a fish out of water. "KAI, PUT ME DOWN!"
"Nope," Kai said, planting a kiss on her forehead that stilled her thrashing and silenced her protesting. "I'm keeping you right here until you're my sunshine again." He snuggled her closer to his face, dipping his head to keep his lips pressed against her forehead.
"Awwwwwwwwwwwwww," Chase's voice said to his right, but Kai ignored all of them, not caring if they were staring at Abby and him.
Right now, it was just him and Abby.
Right now, it was just him and his sunshine.
